***  Vragen, suggesties of feedback?

Lielāko daļu no šī vākuma viņš vēlāk Pēterburgā nodevis Ķeizariskajai Ģeogrāfijas biedrībai, ko vēlāk nožēlojis. Tieši studiju laikā Pēterburgā jaunais mūziķis apjautis tautas dziesmu daili un to neaizstājamo vērtību latviešu mūzikas pasaules veidošanā. Viņš saka: "Senatnes skaņu māksla ir centusies būt i koša, i grezna, i dažāda savā pilnatnībā." ("No atziņu pūra. Emilis Melngailis." Viņš stāsta par vidi, kurā tautas mūzika smelta, apraksta vecās teicējas, viņu latvisko seno valodu, mājas, kurās iegriezies, to iekārtu, visu apkārtnē raksturīgo (Birzniece, M. Mūsu rajona notēlojums literatūrā. "I kad tie iereibuši no salda malka i pašu dziesmām, tad spēj tikai rakstīt," saka Melngailis (Jānis Cīrulis. "Emilis Melngailis. Latvija Amerikā", 1958.03.08). Bet, kad arī tas nav līdzējis, gara mantu vācējs pats uzsācis kādu dziesmu un priecīgs konstatē: "Kad tas dvēseles aizžogs zem manu dziesmu atraismes sāk brukt, tad dziesmām nav gala…" (Emilis Melngailis. "Senatnes sudrabu vācot". "Tilts", 1975.04.01.).

Although today's guest is a declutter coach and has been featured as a guest on the podcast before, she's here for a completely different reason today. Today, Wendy Zanders is here in her role as a mom who homeschools. This episode is a down-to-earth and realistic conversation about the popular topic of homeschooling. Wendy shares her journey, the ups and downs, the reasons behind her family's decision, and the possibilities homeschooling has opened up for her children.  If you are thinking about homeschooling or have questions about how you can homeschool more effectively, Wendy will have some answers in this conversation.   Show Notes: [2:06] - Even though the homeschool journey for Wendy is for the whole family, both of her children are homeschooled differently. [3:10] - Some families changed to homeschooling during the pandemic in 2020 and made the decision to continue. [4:22] - Wendy shares the experience of meeting another family that was homeschooled and her daughter knew right away she wanted to be homeschooled as well. [6:20] - It is okay to simply try homeschooling. If you don't like it or it isn't the right fit for your family, you can always go back to public school or find another option. [7:48] - If you feel that you are not qualified or not feeling confident in a certain subject, you can find a tutor for support. [9:19] - Wendy shares a bit about their structured school schedule and the things they do that are outside the traditional structure. [10:49] - There are so many different options and you can make the decision that is best for you and your family. [13:14] - Wendy shares the recent milestones for her children. [15:26] - Through her son's passion and interests, Wendy was able to create the perfect curriculum for him and he is now in a program for welding. [17:10] - An important component of homeschooling is a community. [19:14] - It is a myth that homeschooled children are missing out on the socialization opportunities provided in public schools. [20:42] - There was a big mental shift that Wendy had to make. Unschooling has been the best fit for her and her family. [23:52] - It is not at all required to spend a ton of money on a homeschool curriculum. [25:30] - There doesn't always have to be a dedicated school space in your home. Your kids may not learn that way.   About Our Guest: Wendy Zanders is a professional organizer, Your Declutter Coach, and a United States Army veteran. Her family has been homeschooling both kids since 2019. They are a special needs homeschooling family that loves to learn outside the box. Her 16-year-old son graduated and is now a professional welder pursuing a career in the automotive industry. Their 10-year-old wants to be a scientist, and they enjoy exploring that path with her. i’m moving in the next month and it maybe hasn’t totally hit. as in, i’m not panicking yet. but i’m going to slowly move all my stuff back into storage for the summer and live without all my junk until around mid-september. i may spend this weekend packing up a lot of non-essentials. craft supplies, books, vhs tapes. don’t tell my vhs tapes that i called them non-essential! they would be so bummed. but i have to start somewhere. i’ll keep a few tapes behind that i’d like to watch with people before we move. i’ll move the bigger tube tv into storage but i’ll keep my tiny 9" tv/vcr combo. i’ll move the cassette tapes. i’ve already packed up my sweaters and jackets for davis summer. my long pants and long sleeve shirts too. will store the keyboards but i’ll bring them back out in fall to try my keyboard square project again. extra shoes and camcorders will go. for whatever reason i’ve so many collected bags, so i’ll throw them all into one giant bag and store those too.i have so many ideas for projects that i may never get to, but i lug this stuff around from place to place regardless. i’m not saying it isn’t worth it. i love having these things around because it keeps me working towards something. keeps my imagination running. but i wonder what it would be like without it all. what else could i be getting into that didn’t require so much physical stuff?DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Puppy Dude “Acid Punk” I’m Blossoming01:50 New Circle “New Years” Memento04:59 Slut Pill “Good in Me” Slut Pill06:38 Plastics “Lovers” Plastic World08:35 FORM “Pulp” DEMO10:31 Dadar “Get Away” To Take Out or Eat In12:55 Big Hog “Big Dog” Demo15:03 Elsa Lester “Money Boy” Back From Vacation18:25 Edward Wi-Fi Password “I Wanna Cry” Eight Songs For End of the Decade19:53 SPLLIT “Amite River” SPLLIT TOGETHER21:37 Zanders “Your Palms” Concentration Sixty-Four24:11 Sniffany & The Nits “Piggy Bank” I Love You (…But You’ve Got Nits)26:14 Sister Anne “Fiend” Left Behind EP28:21 S.C.A.B. “Patterns” Beauty & Balance31:23 P.R.N.D.L. “REVERSE” Greatest Hits!33:13 R.M.F.C. “Worker (Set-top Box cover)” Split w/ Set-top Box34:16 Set-top Box “Television (R.M.F.C)” Split w/ R.M.F.C.36:10 GUNKY “stuff” ectoplastic37:30 Product Placement “New Design” Mass Hallucination39:04 CLAMM “Sucker Punch” Beseech Me

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 3, 2023 53:06

For most of us, clutter can become distracting. Now imagine how clutter can impact those who find it difficult to focus all the time. Clutter is so easy to pile up and if we're feeling disorganized on the outside, it makes us feel cluttered on the inside. Today's interesting topic can apply to everyone and their family and can benefit us in some surprising ways. Today's guest is Wendy Zanders, the Declutter Coach. In our conversation today, Wendy shares her experience growing up undiagnosed with ADD and how through her education she coped with stress by decluttering. She has since taken her experiences and applies them now to help neurodivergent individuals and their families organize their space to go from overwhelmed to simplified.  Listen for some easy tips and tricks on how to start the declutter process in your own home, life, and brain that will also help your child or teen do the same.   Show Notes: [2:32] - Wendy shares her experience being diagnosed with ADD later in life. [4:05] - In her youth, Wendy found herself cleaning and organizing her room to de-stress. It calms her down still in her adulthood. [5:40] - It's all about focusing on something specific to declutter rather than cherry picking certain things. [6:57] - When your child has ADHD and you may also have ADHD, getting things organized can feel impossible. Where do you start? [8:46] - Parents reach out to Wendy when their adolescent needs support and a lot of times realize they struggle with the same challenges. [10:50] - There's a misconception of what “minimalism” really means. [12:37] - The goal is not to get rid of everything. It's about getting things that are meaningful organized. [13:46] - Task initiation can become a problem when a student's space is cluttered and distracting. [16:30] - Decluttering areas in the home can lead to other areas being organized. [17:15] - Let your child choose things that may help them focus, like their work space or even the clothes they wear. [20:47] - Purchasing bins or organizational materials and systems does not declutter. [23:08] - There are three steps to organization. [25:47] - No two homes are the same. Avoid comparing your home with someone else's. [27:30] - Generally, people work better on whatever task they need to focus on when things are organized first. [28:17] - Brain dumping is a great strategy to declutter your mind and still remember things. [30:50] - Use a calendar to keep things straight and organized as a family. [32:44] - In addition to having a calendar available, sometimes the act of writing something down helps you to remember. [34:15] - Don't stay stuck and reach out to someone for help who is compassionate and non judgemental.   About Our Guest: Wendy Zanders is a Professional Organizer, Declutter Coach, Special Needs Mom, and United States Army Veteran. She is passionate about helping Veterans and the special needs community take their homes and lives FROM Overwhelmed TO Simplified. An underperformer in grade school due to undiagnosed attention deficit disorder (ADD), Wendy worked hard and surpassed the expectations of everyone around her. Early in her career, she found that she had a knack for systems and organizing, but found herself living in a totally disorganized home after several episodes of depression. She helps the community get organized by helping them identify what has created the disorder in their lives, and by helping them create systems so they can get back in control of their possessions and homes.    Connect with Wendy: ChildNEXUS Provider Profile Email Wendy@YourDeclutterCoach.com Your Declutter Coach Website   Links and Related Resources: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Episode 40: Lifestyle Activities That Can Improve ADHD Symptoms with Dr. Joel Nigg Be the Executive in Charge   Trying to figure out next steps in supporting your child?  Book a 1:1 consultation with Dr. Karen Wilson - https://www.childnexus.com/consultation  Join our email list so that you can receive information about upcoming webinars - ChildNEXUS.com The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. A Black Man's Sketch Season 2, Episode 9 Reflections on Otis Zanders' Retirement with Commissioner of Public Safety John Harrington About Commissioner John Harrington John Harrington was appointed commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety by Gov. Tim Walz in January 2019. Prior to his appointment, Harrington served as the Metro Transit Chief of Police for the Twin Cities area, overseeing significant growth of the agency and increasing diversity of the department from 5 to 50 percent. In 1977, Harrington began at the St. Paul Police Department as a patrol officer, working his way up the chain of command. He was selected chief of police in 2004 and served in that role until 2010. As chief, he addressed some of St. Paul's most difficult problems. This resulted in numerous successes, including the development of innovative programs that have greatly reduced domestic violence and gang involvement. Harrington served as a Minnesota state senator from the east side of St. Paul from 2010 to 2012. Harrington has been on the faculty at Metropolitan State University, Saint Mary's University, and the University of St. Thomas, where he has taught Leadership, Demographics, Community Oriented Policing, and Gangs. Harrington is a founding member of the Asian-American and black police officer associations. He helped launch and currently chairs the board at Ujamaa Place, a non-profit agency that works with African-American men to transition them out of prison and gangs to become productive community members. Harrington was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He received his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth University and master's degree from the University of St. Thomas. He is the father of five adult children and has 16 grandchildren, and currently resides in the Twin Cities. About Otis Zanders Otis Zanders retired from his role as CEO of Ujamaa Place on September 30, 2022.  Otis Zanders was raised during the Jim Crow era in Mississippi. He was the first in his family to graduate high school. His mother insisted he attend college, to which he obliged and was awarded an academic scholarship to Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, MN.  Zanders credits his mother who instilled a value system based on his African ancestry of love, strength, determination and courage to fight for the most marginalized populations in society.  Zanders' internship with the Minnesota Department of Corrections during his final semester at Gustavus Adolphus College in January 1977, ignited his passion to serve his community by getting proximate to men involved in the criminal justice system and helping to transform their lives.  During his nearly 35-year career with the Department of Corrections, Zanders served at various locations around Minnesota and retired as warden of the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Red Wing, MN at the end of 2011.In 2012, Zanders decided he was not quite ready to give up service altogether and accepted the role as President/CEO of Ujamaa Place.
