(2) Which situational conditions are associated with students' unsettling PE experiences? In this episode of One Symphony with conductor Devin Patrick Hughes, Devin has an inspiring conversation with bass virtuoso and composer Kebra Seyoun Charles. From their early exposure to African drumming and gospel music to becoming a celebrated classical musician, Charles shares their unique journey and vision for the future of classical music through their "Counter Classical" style. Charles's work embodies a fresh perspective on classical music's future, one that honors tradition while embracing innovation and inclusivity. Their approach shows that classical music's evolution doesn't require abandoning its foundations, but rather expanding its boundaries to embrace diverse influences and experiences. As they put it, "Classical music is so beautiful and so ephemeral and it can't be contained." Charles explores growing up in a musical household and how that led to their disvoery of the film composer, Erich Woflgang Korngold. They also discuss the autobiographical ballet project, Enby, that's based on their experience as a nonbinary person developing in the world.  Kebra-Seyoun Charles is able to give prominence to the dance qualities in all forms of music. Kebra-Seyoun has performed alongside esteemed improvisers and composers such as Jon Batiste, at Carnegie Hall, and Tyshawn Sorey, at the New England Conservatory. Kebra-Seyoun was also featured in “Slugs' Saloon” at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, an interactive installation created by famed jazz musician and composer Jason Moran. Kebra-Seyoun Charles is also a passionate chamber musician. Playing with groups like East Coast Chamber Orchestra, A Far Cry, Palaver Strings, and the Sphinx Virtuosi afford Kebra the opportunity to showcase virtuosity while still playing within an ensemble. A prime example of this is their tenure on the 2019 Emmy award-winning Broadway production “Hadestown”. Thank you for joining us on One Symphony. Thanks to Kebra-Seyoun Charles for sharing their amazing spirit and music-making. You can find  more info at https://www.kscharles.com. In their seminal work, The Art of Possibility, Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander offer a transformative perspective on how individuals can redefine their lives to achieve their true potential. At the core of their philosophy is the idea that life is a construct—a creation of our own, shaped by our thoughts, beliefs, and actions. Much like a block of stone, this construct holds immense potential waiting to be unveiled. By chipping away at limiting beliefs and societal expectations, we can reveal our inner beauty and craft a life that aligns with our definitions of success and happiness.

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are freshening our viewpoint as we work to transform problems into possibilities. Problems are like puzzles, tricky but solvable. They're the hurdles that make life interesting! Possibilities, on the other hand, are the exciting paths that open up when we tackle these puzzles head-on. This show is about providing positive alternatives to some of life's little challenges. Why stay stuck if you can take an alternate path? As I've said before, it's all about perspective. Is the glass half-full or have you already enjoyed half of the concoction? Viewing a situation through the lens of possibilities can lead to a more positive and proactive approach to overcoming challenges and achieving success. So, let's flip our thinking and turn problems into fun challenges. Who knows what awesome opportunities might be waiting on the other side? I have a t-shirt that says “365 Possibilities”. I know, I know too early right? But why not approach each day by saying “What do you have in store for ME” vs “WHAT do you have in store for me”. Your internal inflection can completely alter the intent. I had an employer who gave me some seeds of wisdom early on, “Each day starts and ends with you.” That means you are in control. Doesn't that statement in itself give you some motivational fuel?  It's easy to fall into the rut of being led around by circumstance and operating on autopilot but wake up and take back the controls. Whether you fly high or swoop in for a loop and a better look, you're in the pilot seat.  With navigation on your mind, let's chart a course that has you identifying and taking advantage of all the possibilities along the way. On the last show, I mentioned The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander.  The book combines Zander's experience as the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra with Stone Zander's knowledge of psychology to offer practical tools and inspiring stories to help readers shift their perspective from scarcity to abundance. The book's 12 practices are designed to help you see new possibilities and bring them to life. We're going to explore these concepts and more! At Vishnu's Virtues, I found a breakdown of the 12 Lessons from The Art of Possibility On the THNK School of Leadership's YouTube channel, I found The Art of Possibility: Interview with Benjamin & Rosamund Zander On LinkedIn, Hacking HR gives us 6 Ways to Lead (When You Are Not In Charge!) Opening your mind to get a fresh viewpoint can be an invigorating process that leads to new ideas and personal growth. Here are some ways to do that: Travel: Visiting new places exposes you to different cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives. Read Widely: Books, articles, and blogs on various topics can introduce you to new ideas and ways of thinking. Talk to Diverse People: Engaging with people from different backgrounds and experiences can broaden your understanding. Practice Mindfulness: Meditation and mindfulness can help you see things more clearly and reduce mental clutter. Check out the Serenity App from Pau Bauer which helps you re-discover the "beacon of light" and stillness within you. Try New Hobbies: Learning something new, whether it's a language, instrument, or sport, can give you a fresh perspective. Challenge Your Beliefs: Question your assumptions and try to see things from different angles. Seek Feedback: Ask others for their opinions and be open to constructive criticism. Attend Workshops and Seminars: These can provide new insights and skills. Journal: Writing down your thoughts can help you process and see things in a new light. Limit Media Consumption: Sometimes, taking a break from the news and social media can help clear your mind. Practice Gratitude: Focusing on what you're thankful for can shift your mindset to a more positive and open one. Get Out in Nature: Spending time outdoors can refresh your mind and inspire new thoughts. Volunteer: Helping others can give you a different perspective on your own life. Learn from Failures: Reflecting on past mistakes can provide valuable lessons and new viewpoints. Stay Curious: Always be willing to ask questions and seek out new information. By trying out these approaches, you can gradually open your mind and gain a broader, more nuanced understanding of the world around you. CHALLENGE: See beyond the obstacles and embrace the endless opportunities life presents. By opening your mind and exploring new perspectives, you can transform challenges into gateways for growth. Take action today by engaging with diverse experiences and people, and watch your world expand in unexpected and wonderful ways. I Know YOU Can Do It!

Guests In this episode, I was deeply fortunate to sit down with two amazing guests: Benjamin Zander and Rosamund Stone Zander. Ben is the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra and the Boston Youth Orchestra. Rosamund was a therapist and an accomplished painter and sadly passed away in September 2023. They are the authors of The Art of Possibility – a life-change book if you adopt its twelve practices. Roz was the author of a follow-up volume, Pathways to Possibility. Summary Some readers and listeners may have the tendency to place these two books in the category of “self-help.” But as the authors point out early on in The Art of Possibility, “the practices presented in this book are not about making incremental changes that lead to new ways of doing things based on old belief, and they are not about self-improvement.” The practices are more transformational. This is not about playing better in old constructs, it's about playing in new constructs of our own making. As you listen How might Roz and Ben's respective roles – Roz as a therapist who listens for the stories that clients tell and Ben as a conductor who helps musicians break through barriers – apply to the roles that educational leaders and teachers play? How people live in what they think is reality when it's really just their interpretation. It's an invention. Why living with a spirit of possibility has to be created and practiced. Ben's and Roz's explanation of one of the practices, “The giving of an A.” In the book they write, “This A is not an expectation to live up to, but a possibility to live into.” The ownership of the “A” shifts from the traditional bestower, the teacher, to a co-created relationship with the student. How might this apply to education in our schools? What “Being a contribution” is dependent on. How Ben defines “leadership.” What leaders who follow the practice “Lead from any chair” believe in. How “Being the board” eliminates the need for blame.

“You have to be really agile and flexible, but also really stubborn about the problems you're going to solve,” says Alan Chiu, co-founder of Boba and its contributing company Enya.ai, about the dual attributes successful founders must possess. Blockchain technology, similarly, is a balance of traits. On one hand, it  offers a number of opportunities. The open source format and permissionless entree allow people who might otherwise be hindered by their geographical location, race, gender access to a business's information. This transparency has the potential to decentralize power, and form a system of checks and balances that keep everyone more honest. However, this type of demand on the system leads to slower performance and higher costs. This is where Boba comes in, as it's the only blockchain platform that takes advantage of blockchain's features while utilizing the sustainability of Web 2 infrastructure.  Alan discusses how the blockchain model makes money, how to identify the right time to execute on a plan. He talks about the most difficult aspect of scaling and how he approaches risk. First and foremost you must evaluate the founders when deciding to invest in companies, and that those founders must have a balance of strong convictions and openness to new ideas and methods.  Continuing the theme of balance, Alan discusses how he manages both the longterm and shortterm goals of his team. He gives his thoughts on the most common mistakes founders make when starting a company, and the most common reason they fail to scale.  Quotes: “If these cryptocurrencies increase in value, you are starting to build a pretty interesting portfolio without being subject to biases against age, gender, ethnicity, geographical location. And that's really powerful. This is the type of opportunity that used to be reserved for Silicon Valley engineers. Now anyone in the world can have access to. (9:05-9:29 | Alan) “The reason blockchains are always going to be much slower than a traditional web two infrastructure like AWS is because there's a cost to synchronizing all of these mills that the mega blockchain network with these centralized, the decentralized nature of blockchains is both a feature but also puts a limit on how many transactions you can do per unit time.” (13:26-13:47 | Alan) For any disruptive technology, in the early days, it's really hard to come up with something quantifiable and justify that with data, because everything is so new. (17:48-18:01 | Alan) “One of the most difficult aspects of being a founder is, on one hand, you've got to have strong conviction around your vision because there's going to be a lot of headwind and a lot of uncertainty, if you don't have strong conviction, it's really hard to sustain. On the other hand, you've got to be really open to advice and feedback, especially feedback from customers, whether they want what you're building or not. You're learning and adapting and changing to your customer feedback, and also to a changing competitive landscape and market dynamics and new technologies that continue to evolve.” (20:47-21:20 | Alan)  “Sometimes the best path forward is actually not commercializing the innovation itself. But finding some application for the innovation in a product or service. And commercializing that instead, and using the core innovation as a creative driver of a competitive advantage.” (52:01-53:01 | Alan) Links: Connect with Brendan Dell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendandell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendanDell Instagram: @thebrendandellTikTok: @brendandell39 Buy a copy of Brendan's Book, The 12 Immutable Laws of High-Impact Messaging: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780578210926  Connect with Alan Chiu:Twitter:@alanchiuhttps://www.enya.ai/Check out Alan Chiu's recommended books:   Connect: Exceptional Relationships with Family, Friends and Colleagues https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780593237090   The Art of Possibility: Transforming Professional and Personal Life by Rosamund Stone Zander and Benjamin Zander https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780142001103   The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom by Henri J.M. The Art of Possibility written by Benjamin and Rosamund Zander is one of the most artistically influenced personal development books I've ever read. It's core principles are similar to many other self help books but this one has a twist I've never seen or heard and it's beautify written, it inspired me to be more emotionally, vulnerable, it made me want to connect with people in this realm of art and possibility. It's a very fun read. Roz and Ben have gone to so many countries and participated in some dream land experiences. A fantastic book indeed.Purchase your copy of Sean's book Being Unstoppable from AmazonStart recording high quality audio and video with SquadcastStart your own podcast for free with BuzzsproutGo to Tubebuddy.com/BronsonWilks for help ranking your youtube videos. Throughout his career, Benjamin Zander has developed a human and transformative approach to making and teaching music. The orchestra is a group of highly trained individuals poised to coalesce into an effective whole. Passion, creativity, and the desire to contribute are basic human instincts. In this new model of leadership, the conductor sees his job as awakening possibilities in others. Zander has traveled the world lecturing to organizations on leadership. He has appeared as a keynote speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he was presented with the Crystal Award for “Outstanding Contributions in the Arts and International Relations.” His best-selling book, The Art of Possibility, co-authored with leading psychotherapist Rosamund Zander, has been translated into seventeen languages. Zander has established an international reputation as a guest conductor. He has conducted orchestras as diverse as the Israel Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, the Scottish and Irish National Orchestras, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Malaysian Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the National Youth Orchestras of New Zealand, Australia and Venezuela.   Show Notes: https://www.benjaminzanderspeaker.com/ https://www.benjaminzanderspeaker.com/about.html

My guest this week is Drew Dudley (cool name, huh?).   Because he specializes in leadership topics, and I think he's really smart, I'm excited to share what he knows/what he's learned.   I believe we really can lead from any seat, as I learned from the illuminating Benjamin Zander years ago when I saw him speak at a  conference.  His presence was electric.  And it inspired me to read his books about possibilities, sparking a fire I've had kindling ever since.   Drew urges us to accept that anyone who acts engaging and is doing or demonstrating something, is indeed a leader. I completely agree!   No matter what your role or place in life, when you have a story, it's important to share your story. You simply never know who is in the audience. Right then, or later, people will often respond with, "I thought I was the only one". It's almost never true. And more importantly, the stories we're most embarrassed to share, are the ones we need to tell.   When we chatted about success and failure, and thinking that if we try something, or take a risk, we might not survive, Drew urges us to tell him or someone about a time you didn't survive.  Spoiler alert: you can't! You can't because you have survived. You're alive and that's proof that you can survive anything. So there's zero evidence that you won't survive. So stop being afraid of that, at least. As far as risks go, we can almost never be certain of something so instead, be decisive.   Get comfortable being uncertain.   Finally, from the hard won wisdom of Drew, momentum is more important than plans. Yes indeed. Because we all know the best laid plans… So, go build your momentum, decide something, be uncertain, and see what's possible!  You will survive - you have your proof now!   Listen in to see what else he's survived and lived to tell about.
