Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Nicola Lindson discuss emerging evidence in e-cigarette research and interview Steve Cook from the University of Michigan USA about the importance of correctly interpreting and assessing the available data. Associate Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Associate Professor Nicola Lindson discuss the new evidence in e-cigarette research and interview Dr Steven Cook from the Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health University of Michigan and the Centre for Assessment of Tobacco Regulations, University of Michigan. In the May podcast Steve Cook discusses the methodological problems of cross-sectional data on the health effects of e-cigarette use a topic he addressed at the May 2025 EC Summit, Washington DC. Steve Cook underlines why all cross-sectional health effects studies should be interpreted with extreme caution unless they examine dose-response relationships and account for temporality and cigarette smoking confounding. Dr Cook emphasises the importance of other information such as smoking histories and health histories and the importance of developing a best practice to ensure that we minimize the risks associated with spurious association and maximise predictive accuracy. Steven Cook receives National Institute for Health (NIH) and Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) funding. This is not deemed a conflict of interest. We are joined from Michigan USA by Ryan Wohlfert - Health & Wellness Dr & Dr of Chiropratic. This is a great discussion to kick off 2025 as it is about a topic that the majority of adults will need to address at some stage in their life - back pain & spinal health. Dr Ryan offers an empowering approach to personal responsibility & lifestyle modification & far from talking about ‘back cracking' & ‘manipulations' shares his teachings on posture, strength training, nutrition, hydration & daily spinal hygiene (think daily oral health - but for your back). This was a fun & informative conversation & Dr Ryan will definitely be returning to the show in the future. https://www.drwohlfert.com/posture-minicourse https://www.youtube.com/RyanWohlfert https://www.drwohlfert.com/

Tim Shultz, WellConnect. Why Well-Connect? Why would someone consider Well-Connect over other heating/cooling options? The EV/electric vehicle situation is a cautionary tale for the move to ‘all electric heating and cooling in homes'. Drivers want hybrid so their local travel is low cost electric and when they want to make a trip they don't have the ‘range anxiety' of 100% electric. Big auto is scaling back their EV investments and Toyota stock jumped as they are pushing hybrid. For heating, all electric systems are often not the most economical option when considering up front and ongoing operating costs. Many people now have generators which need fuel to operate so keeping some fuel on the property is wise. Well-Connect is hybrid heating - geothermal for 80% to 90% and fossil fuel (propane or heating oil) for the rest. This is also known as dual fuel heating but Well-Connect is the only system patented to operate both systems simultaneously which generates significantly more savings and since it is an add-on to a home's existing furnace, the system is much easier to install and much less expensive than other geothermal systems. 80/20 Rule If you have a water well and heat with propane, fuel oil, wood or electric, you should see if Well-Connect is a good fit for you as is the most affordable option for a rural home. If you have a well, you already have half of a geothermal system – just add a Well-Connect in as little as 8 hours. It also air conditions more efficiently than conventional air conditioners and without the outdoor noisy unit. Every unit has a real-time performance monitor so you'll know just how much energy you're saving and will alert you if you forgot to change your air filter. Made in Michigan/USA

In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Laura Leay interviews Laura Rossi from Delft University of Technology (the Netherlands) and Greg van Anders from the University of Michigan (USA) and Queen's University (Canada) about advances they've made in colloidal preassembly in order to gain control in materials structure at a range of length scales. Through experiments and computer simulation, the researchers showed that particle interaction and particle shape can be decoupled through spherical confinement, which – when clustered – assembled differently than those observed in bulk assembly. This work was published in a recent issue of Science Advances (doi: 10.1126/sciadv.abm0548).
On this episode Gavin and Jon talk with Matt Tagget, one of the founders of REK Breoadheads “The Final Cut”. We also talk about how REK Broadheads impact is like no other and why you need to try their no slip only deploy on impact mechanical broadheads, which is a game changer for whitetail hunters to never worry about your broadhead not doing its job. Matt was born in raised in Michigan and after many years the old Christmas tree 30 acre family farm produced a great buck and after a little hard work Matt was able to connect with his own broadhead. We also talk about his transition into hunting Midwest Whitetails and the difference from going to a more whitetail managed state compared to his high pressured and large hunter numbers of his home state of Michigan. We cover a lot in this episode and go down a few rabbit holes but we hope you guys enjoy this episode and thank you for tuning in!!
This is part of an overnight recording from the shore of Perch Lake in Traverse City, Michigan USA. The lake is on forest land owned by the State of Michigan and is very close to the VASA trail system. It is around 2.5 to 3 miles from the nearest paved road, but noise pollution is still present most of the time. This recording has minimal noise pollution as a result of combining two clips from the same night.I recorded this soundscape with the Zoom F6 Field Recorder and the Audio Technica BP 4025 stereo microphone. This soundscape is part of a longer recording that ran overnight along the Muncie Lakes Pathway in Traverse City, Michigan USA on 5/25/2022 around 2:30 AM. In this recording, we are overlooking a wetlands area that looks like a cross between a vernal pool and a swamp. I would guess the area is 25 acres and has a mix of cedar, pine, hardwoods, and long grasses. A hiking trail runs along one side of the area and a two-track dirt road on the other. There is logging in the area but remains a popular hiking trail all year long. I recorded this soundscape with the Zoom F6 Field Recorder with a matching pair of Sonorous Objects SO.1 microphones. I introduced some noise to the recording in post-processing by pushing the gain too high to better hear the frogs. Despite the slight noise in the recording, it is still worth listening to because it has a very curious deer throughout and also features the rare call of the Eastern Whip-poor-will near the end. Welcome to my first anniversary episode, celebrating the second anniversary of the mylifeinconcert.com podcast (I didn't do one the first year so I'll be doing two this year to make up for that). For these anniversary EPs, I will be jumping into the future of my series and selecting gigs from throughout my concert=going years that are personally significant for me or that I really want to highlight or talk about. And this first anniversary podcast jumps into 1988 and a gig wherein I had some extraordinary revelations that I have never forgotten. Join me next time for this Episode 23, concert no. 51, and an unforgettable show by Keith Richards and the X-Pensive Winos at the then-recently—and beautifully—refurbished Fox Theatre in Detroit, on December 8, 1988. Unexpectedly, and through a bizarre merging of synchronicity and happenstance, I find myself directly in front of Keith, about 10-or-so feet away, for his entire encore. And it results in an epiphany. I have written a new, full blog entry on the show as a companion piece to the podcast. Tune in for avoiding a strip search at the border, being in agony and the healing power of music, and some realizations about rock stars. Next on Stage: The next concert crystalizes a moment in time, representing a changing of the guards in the alternative music world, when The Beat—or The English Beat as they were called on this side of the pond—come to Alumni Hall in London, Ontario with a new, unknown American band called R.E.M. in tow as the opening act. The show took place as The Beat were in the last throes of their career but also peaking in popularity in North America. Meanwhile, R.E.M. released their classic debut LP, Murmur, during that same week. Retrospectively, it marks the sundown of one era and the sunrise of the next.Returning Special Guest Phil Robinson has a lot of great memories from the night which he shares. Tune in next time for stage invasions, a cultural shift, and wondering what the hell I was thinking. Read the original 2011 blog entry here … (EP 24, no. 16) The (English) Beat with R.E.M.: End of the Party, Alumni Hall, UWO, London, Ontario, Canada, Tuesday April 12, 1983
Originally aired January 11, 2021After needing a break from her career in film and TV, Sophie took a very fortuitous turn in her life by finding the most random job she could, milking camels. If you didn't realize camels could be milked, neither did I. To make a long story short, Sophie fell in love with camels and never went back to her old career. Her ongoing 5-year passion for camels has taken her to places like The Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre and The Tirari Desert, Uluru, Michigan USA, Texas, and Rajasthan India. At some point in the pursuit to learn more about these amazing creatures, Sophie got the idea to cross Australia on foot while being accompanied by 5 wild (or “feral”) camels. This would not only entail catching and taming 5 out of upwards of a million wild camels that roam Australia, but also walking thousands of kilometers across the vast and void Australian Outback. Keep in mind, Australia is the geographic size of the US with 1/10th of the population. A wild idea indeed!Today Sophie joins us from just over the halfway point of the journey in the bizarre little town of Coober Pedy. French offers an original and convincing hypothesis about a distinctive mercantile and artisanal culture that is not merely emulative of elite consumption practices, but rather innovative and adaptive. Throughout, she explores the relationship between gender, 'stuff, ' and the lifeways and rituals associated with household work, food, and childbirth. More broadly, she makes a powerful contribution to wider historical and sociological discussions about the relationship between people and their things. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ihshg/support

My Name is Greg Gallegos. I have been artistically inclined since I was very young. I was heavily into woodshop in high school. I first fell in love with the lathe there. It took me another ten years after high school to be able to purchase a lathe. After years of properly learning the craft and practicing the skills, I felt I was ready to start selling, I started with the local craft and art markets, which lead to several large national shows. These days, I have settled into a fairly normal routine of being spontaneously creative at times and then prodigiously productive at other times. Trying to find a happy medium…not likely to happen but…I love wood with a passion which keeps me wondering what the next piece of wood I cut into will show me. I try not to limit myself to a particular set of skills. I have turned just about everything there is to turn. I love them all. Hollow forms, natural edge bowls, whimsical pieces, and decorative carving as well. I gravitate towards working with green wood to completion. I really feel that it gives the wood its most simplistic forms and keeps the organic quality of the wood intact.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/WoodturnersWorldwide)

I grew up in a family of racecar drivers -- both my mom and dad (that's how they met!) and all of my uncles raced cars. When I heard about an Autistic racecar driver named Armani Williams, I knew I simply had to have him on the show! Armani is awesome! He's 20 years old, diagnosed Autistic at the age of 2, and lives in Grosse Point, Michigan. He knew he wanted to be a racecar driver since the age of 8, and he was not going to let Autism get in the way. In this conversation, we talk about racing and Autism, family support, the Autistic Community, being "open" about being Autistic, and so much more! This conversation was so much fun, and by the end of it, Drew and Ryan had decided that once Covid is over, we are going to plan a road trip to Michigan to see Armani race in person!Check him out at: TeamArmaniRacing.com and @TeamArmaniRacing! After needing a break from her career in film and TV, Sophie took a very fortuitous turn in her life by finding the most random job she could, milking camels. If you didn’t realize camels could be milked, neither did I. This would not only entail catching and taming 5 out of upwards of a million wild camels that roam Australia but also walking thousands of kilometers across the vast and void Australian Outback. Keep in mind, Australia is the geographic size of the US with 1/10th of the population. A wild idea indeed! Today Sophie joins us from just over the halfway point of the journey in the bizarre little town of Coober Pedy. Jude, Delilah, Charlie, Clayton, and Mac will all continue the journey in March. www.sophiematterson.com ( http://www.sophiematterson.com ) Instagram: @sophiematterson ( https://www.instagram.com/sophiematterson/?hl=en ) Facebook Coast-to-Coast-to-camel-trek ( https://www.facebook.com/Coast-to-Coast-to-camel-trek-111405407226890 ) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Growing a church is difficult. Stepping in as a new leader and growing a church that has been stagnant for years is nearly impossible. Rekindling growth in a church and being the same leader from beginning to end is borderline miraculous. Find out how to bring "dry bones" to life again in this episode of the Rob Skinner Podcast Joel and Beth Nagel lead the Lansing Area Church of Christ. Joel planted the church in 2004 as a satellite ministry from the Detroit Church of Christ with about 30 members. For the first 5 years the church stayed stagnant overall and couldn't grow above 40 members. In 2009, with the same people and the same leadership, things started to change. Over the last decade the church in Lansing has doubled, tripled, and quadrupled with growth every year to over 125 members. They have been able to hire full time campus ministers, buy a church building, get extra funding from outside sources, and create numerous resources that have helped many other churches small and large. Joel loves to talk to Christian leaders about how conviction and creativity can overcome any bottleneck to growth that we may face. When he's not behind the pulpit you might find him praying in the woods, trail running, or jumping off of waterfalls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Not all archivists work in a library or academic setting, but they all face similar challenges—lack of necessary staff and resources. In this presentation, you’ll learn how one lone archivist transformed a religious archives in Detroit that had no computerized records, relevant finding aids, inventory of holdings, or open reading room into a responsive reference center for both religious and secular patrons. You will learn how she and her team of 1 part-time staff person, 2 volunteers, and 1 friar work with paper-based archival materials including council meetings, land deeds, and friar personal files as well as saint relics, artifacts, and audio-visual items. The methods described to bring order to chaos are adaptable to large and small archives in any setting. Access the captioned version of this webcast at https://youtu.be/2NTkeAjM3Wg
After coming down from my wine and gin-soaked euphoria after receiving the amazing news that I am officially cancer-free (yay!), I got the opportunity to chat with Stephen ‘Sugar' Segerman, the inspiration behind the Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugarman. If you haven't seen the documentary yet (where have you been hiding?) then take a quick look at the trailer so you can be up-to-date with what this episode is all about. Go on, I'll wait. Finished? Alright, let's jump into it! Sugar is one of the main characters in the documentary. He owns a vintage record store in Cape Town called Mabu Vinyl, an iconic meeting spot for the city's art and music scene. The store is just around the corner from where I am staying, so the other day I walked in, bought a T-shirt, and asked to interview Sugar. A few days later I received a call from the man himself and soon I was ringing the doorbell of his home, eager to hear more from the amateur music detective. He opened the door and welcomed me in with a warm smile and, of course, a classic South African ‘howzit!'. “I'm Sugar,” he said, as if I didn't already know (I have watched the documentary more times than I care to admit). Sugar got his nickname from his army days when his friends preferred to call him Sugarman instead of Segerman, and it soon became Sugar for short. The reference comes from the song ‘Sugarman' by the American singer-songwriter Rodriguez, an incredibly popular music artist in South Africa at the time. THE COLD HARD FACTS Sixto Rodriguez is a remarkable musician hailing from Detroit, Michigan USA. Although immensely gifted, his music career had a disappointing start in the US, with his first album Cold Fact (1970) selling only a handful of copies. However, by chance or divine meddling, bootleg copies of Cold Fact started making their way to African shores in the early 70s which resulted in a massive fanbase in South Africa, unbeknownst to the singer. The Cold Fact LP was a fixture in most South African's record collection, and the singer was more popular than The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in South Africa. However, the only information South Africans could get regarding Rodriguez was from the Cold Fact LP. The musician's identity was a mystery, and so rumours and tales started surfacing about his possible whereabouts, furthering his popularity and mysticism in the country. It's important to consider that during this time South Africa was in the height of the Apartheid regime, which saw the country being isolated from the world through trade tariffs and embargos, and the like. So very little information about the goings-on of the rest of the world trickled into the South African public's radar. Sugar, like every South African in the 70s, was a massive Rodriguez fan and so attempted to find out more about the singer, finding hidden messages and geographical references in the lyrics of his songs. To cut a long and fascinating 30-year story short – which forms the basis for the documentary – Sugar eventually tracked down Rodriguez in Detroit, almost penniless working in construction, and informed him of his celebrity in South Africa. The singer-songwriter had been toiling in obscurity due to his record label's inability and lack of desire to promote the artist as he deserved to be. Add to this a fair bit of thuggish dishonesty and limitless greed by record labels in the US, and the result was a musical genius relegated to a lowly construction worker, deprived of a life of stardom he so desperately deserved. Rodriguez quit his musical career in 1971 and even though he sold hundreds of thousands of records – maybe millions – in another country, he never saw a dime of that money. After years trying to track him down, Sugar and his accomplices managed to fly Rodriguez and his family over to South Africa where he played 6 sold-out shows to arenas filled with cheering fans - something the singer had never experienced before. It's an absolutely heartwarming story that still gives me chills - and it is far from over. MUSICAL DETECTIVES Let's go back to the beginning of the story of how Sugar eventually got the opportunity to meet his idol. When Rodriguez's music could be heard from every living room in 1970's South Africa, his fans believed he was just as famous in his home country as he was in South Africa. And why not? After all, his talent was undeniable, his lyrics layered and politically poignant, and he was seen as a worthy rival to the likes of Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel. Surrounded by mystery due to lack of information about the artist, many people believed that he was dead. Some said he shot himself on stage in an underground bar in Moscow, others that he'd set himself alight and burned to death before an audience someplace else, or he died of a drug overdose. Some rumours said that he was alive but in a mental institution, another that he was in jail for murdering his girlfriend. The mystery grew rampant. After Apartheid ends in the mid-'90s, Sugar teamed up with journalist Craig Bartholomew to find out the truth and solve the mystery about the enigmatic muso, particularly who he was and how he died. It started when Sugar, the Rodriguez expert, was asked to co-write the liner notes for the booklet when the South African record company released Rodriguez's second album, Coming from Reality (1971) on CD for the first time. On the other side of the country, in Johannesburg, Craig Bartholomew saw this as an invitation to join the search for the elusive singer-songwriter. It was not easy, as the pair explained, and after nearly two years of frustration and dead ends they nearly gave up. But then they had a breakthrough. Their detective work finally led to Detroit, Michigan and eventually to Mike Theodore, the producer of Rodriguez's Cold Fact LP. Craig managed to get him on the phone where he informed the elated journalist that Rodriguez was in fact still alive and well, sane, not suffering from burns, living a quiet life in Detroit. He had been working in construction for over 25 years since the day he was dropped from his record label. One year later in 1998, after eventually tracking down his number and getting to speak to Rodriguez himself on the telephone telling him about his remarkable story, Sugar and Craig flew Rodriguez and his daughters to South Africa to perform 6 sold-out shows for adoring local fans. But still, not many people outside of South Africa had heard about Rodriguez and his remarkable story of stolen fame. That was until Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul heard the story from Sugar. BRING BACK THE COLOURS TO MY DREAM It took Bendjelloul close to 5 years of hard work with hardly any budget to finish the film. It was released in January 2012, one year after I myself heard the story from my friend Toby during my first visit to Cape Town. While I was living in Cape Town my friend told me that Rodriguez was on his way back to perform more shows in South Africa. I couldn't actually believe how I could be so lucky to be in Cape Town at the same time as Rodriguez. My friends quickly told me that the tickets to his shows would definitely be sold out, but my stubborn Danish charm permitted me to dig deeper to source a ticket. After scouring the internet I eventually found newly-released tickets for an additional show due to the high demand. I jumped to buy the tickets - but not just any ticket. I managed to secure the front row, center. My seat was A1. I couldn't believe my luck. Even though at this stage, I hadn't heard a single song from the man, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to experience it. After I bought the ticket to the concert, I went down to a record shop and bought the album and the movie on DVD (yes, this was in 2013 and the time where we actually bought CD's and DVDs!). And then I basically had the album playing on repeat in order for me to prepare myself. And his music was everything I expected and hoped for, and more. Rodriguez is a true artist, and if you have yet to experience his musical mastery then I urge you to do yourself a favour and do so. You won't regret it. Are you eager to hear what it was like to be at that concert hearing Rodriguez play live for the first time? Then you don't want to miss part 2. Stay tuned. Patrick Venail is a 39 year-old, French-Colombian community ecologist. He got his master’s degree in Biodiversity, Evolution and Environment at the Université de Montpellier II (France) on 2006 and his PhD on Ecology and Evolution from the same institution in 2010. In 2011 the French Society of Ecology awarded him as the best young ecology researcher after his publication in Nature about testing the influence of dispersal on the diversity and functioning of experimental metacommunities. From 2010 to 2013 he worked as post-doc fellow, first at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá (Colombia) and later at the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Michigan (USA) where he started using phytoplankton as an experimental model system. Since April 2013 he is a Senior Research and Teaching Assistant at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) in the Microbial Ecology group. His research focuses on understanding biodiversity (that is, the diversity of life). His interests are at the interface between microbiology, ecology and evolution. Working with microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, microscopic algae) allows him to explore both ecological and evolutionary processes simultaneously. He has mostly worked under controlled laboratory conditions but has recently been involved in several fieldwork studies in Russia and Ecuador. Currently he is focused in lake systems and the benefits they provide to humans, and into understanding the link between phytoplankton diversity and water quality. He has contributed to over 20 major scientific publications so far.

About The Strength Switch Unlock your children’s potential by helping them build their strengths. This game-changing book shows us the extraordinary results of focusing on our children’s strengths rather than always trying to correct their weaknesses. Most parents struggle with this shift because they suffer from a negativity bias, thanks to evolutionary development, giving them “strengths-blindness.” By showing us how to throw the “strengths switch,” Lea Waters demonstrates how we can not only help our children build resilience, optimism, and achievement but we can also help inoculate them against today’s pandemic of depression and anxiety. As a strengths-based scientist for more than twenty years, ten of them spent focusing on strengths-based parenting, Waters has seen how this approach enhances self-esteem and energy in both children and teenagers. Yet more on the plus side: parents find it a particularly exciting and rewarding way to raise children. With many suggestions for specific ways to interact with your kids, Waters demonstrates how to discover strengths and talents in our children, how to use positive emotions as a resource, how to build strong brains, and even how to deal with problem behaviors and talk about difficult situations and emotions. As revolutionary yet simple as Mindset and Grit, The Strength Switch will show parents how a small shift can yield enormous results. See Less Photo: © Andrew Campbell Lea Waters, Ph.D., is President of the International Positive Psychology Association and the Gerry Higgins Chair in Positive Psychology at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She holds an affiliate position with Cambridge University’s Well-being Institute (UK) and the Center for Positive Organizations at the University of Michigan (USA). Waters was the Founding Director of the Centre for Positive Psychology at the University of Melbourne and was listed in the Top 100 Women of Influence by The Australian Financial Review in 2015. She has also served as a consultant to a wide range of businesses. Waters lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her husband, Matthew Scholes; her son, Nicholas; and her daughter, Emily.
I was born in Port Huron, Michigan USA and moved to a suburb of Toronto, ON, Canada at age five. My father was a technical writer and magazine editor while my mother was a high school teacher. Always interested in creative writing, I participated in many contests in grammar school which led me to start writing my own short stories. At age thirteen I began working on one, which kept developing and progressing until I had a hand-written manuscript for “Quest for the Red Sapphire” at age fifteen. The project was shelved for many years through high school and then returning to the USA to attend Michigan State University. I graduated with a degree in Communication and found that I had a gift and enthusiasm for speaking in public. That led me to a career in furniture store management and sales. With my first PC I dusted off my old story and began to revise it. Not a day had passed since I first created the story that I did not consider some aspect of its outline. An entire series was planned and put in order to be written. Backstories were formed and the series was ready to produce. After years of refinement of the stories, my mother came to me with a terminal illness and made me promise to publish the books. So I did just that.

In 2001, the American state of Michigan had a suicide rate of 89 per 100,000 amongst mental health patients. By 2013 this had dropped to just 16 per 100,000 and shines against the US national average of 230. One network of hospitals in particular – The Henry Ford Group – registered zero suicides per 100,000 patients and branded its scheme as the zero-suicide model. Its achievement comes from offering mental health screenings at earlier stages for patients. Local reporter Colin McNulty speaks to the doctors who developed the system and how they have sustained it. He also follows the wider network of patients, friends and relatives who have all benefited from the scheme. What this ground-breaking healthcare service offers is weighed up byFi Glover, entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox and Professor Henrietta Moore of the Institute for Global Prosperity. And with the estimation that global annual suicide fatalities could rise to 1.5 million by 2020 – is it a staple addition to the perfect country or a one-off success story? Thank you Mark, you called me out for being "competitive" and I am. Challenge accepted! Like I told you, we don't have "Church Micros" here in the states. What we have are "Spirit Quest" caches in cemeteries. In fact, of my 5700 finds I had found only two with the word "church" in the title. I did a quick search and found that there are exactly six caches containing the word "church" within a 30-mile radius of my house. I knew the chances were slim, but I wasn't about to let that stop me from trying. One of the caches had a string of DNFs and was clearly missing, so that one was dropped from my list right away. I headed out Sunday afternoon, in 15*F temps and getting over a bad cold, to find the other 5. The first cache I went to was Church Road Park (GCX1W0), which was about a half an hour from my house. The park was not surprisingly abandoned, and I made the relatively easy trek to GZ where I stood scratching my head. It's very possible that the snow and frozen ground caused me to search the wrong part of the right host, but it's also a possibility that the host has been altered since the cache was last found. Or it's even more possible that I was searching the wrong host altogether, although I did expand my search by up to 50 feet in all directions. DNF. Bummer. I remembered that I had a backup "church" cache about 50 miles in the other direction that was near where I pick up my son from his dad's house, so there was still a chance of finding five. I moved on to the second cache, Churchill Island (GC1N3CT). The walk to GZ was quiet and peaceful. I stopped for a few pictures along the way. I got to GZ and searched for a good half an hour, digging through the foot of snow on the ground with a stick, poking along in the hopes that I would stumble across the container. Unfortunately the snow made this one much too difficult, and the GPS bounce didn't help matters. Even a quick PAF didn't help. So I had to walk away without a smiley. Strike two. By this time I was cold and frustrated. But I am not a quitter. I wasn't far from the third cache, Churchville Cemetery "Illinois Spirit Quest" (GC2V1M1), so I headed over. It's a multi placed by my friend, Dutchlandian, from Holland. (Hi Ans!) I arrived at the posted coords and thought there was no way I'd be able to read the headstone with all of the snow. Luckily though I was able to brush away the top few inches, which was enough to read all of the inscriptions. I did some quick calculations and was off to the final. Finally! I am so glad this one is hidden where and how it is, so that I could get at least one smiley today! I was feeling a little more optimistic now, and moved on to Who Has a "Church Key" (GC29ZHV). The closest parking was about 500 feet away and I had to walk along a busy road to get to GZ. I wasn't sure what to expect here, given the large percentage of DNFs and the fact that the description says it's not winter friendly. I was happy to find that the "rock" (a Rolling Rock bottle cap) that the cache is under according to the hint was in full view! Somehow there was no snow on the ground in only this one small area. I seemed to be on a roll. But then ... I tried to pick up the cache. It wouldn't budge. I found a stick and tried to pry it up. It started to move a little, so I wedged my finger between it and the ground and pulled. Something came loose all right, but it was just the bottle cap, and the cache itself was still stuck in the frozen ground. The wire attaching the cap to the cache pulled right through the cap. Oh no! I broke the cache! (An apology email was sent to the C.O.) I tried and tried, but the ground was just too frozen and I could not get the container unstuck. Despite finding the cache, I could not put my signature on the log so no smiley here for me. So at only one find out of four attempts, most people would probably just go home. Not me though. I was only a mile or so from the last cache, Anybody Got a Church Key? (GC5AF83), and had no choice but to finish my list. This one is on private property (with permission of course), around the back side of a small local brewery, Church Street Brewing Company. Even though it was Sunday and there was no one around, I still felt a bit uneasy walking around the building. I was very happy that this was a quick and easy find! Retrieval and replacement on the other hand, not so easy being only 5 feet tall. But I got the job done. Final stats for the day: 4 hours, 70 miles, 5 attempts, 2 finds. February Challenge = DNF. Thanks for the fun adventure! I'm looking forward to next month's challenge. shortyknits Ask Doctor D.. Greetings, Doctor D, from Detroit, Michigan - USA! I’m scrapcat, and I have an etiquette question about Favorite points. Recently, I had two different experiences where cachers wrote in their logs that they were giving my cache a Favorite Point. But when I check the “Who Favorited this cache…” their favorite points weren’t listed. I’m assuming they either forgot to do it or changed their mind or don’t know how to do it. Is it appropriate to contact them and ask them to add the favorite point? And, if so, what is the best way to go about it without alienating them? Thank you and happy caching! S. Ady was having a moan earlier in the car as we were listening to your last show saying you wouldn't let him join in the competition but then had to eat his words!! Anyway this months challenge is entitled the pi challenge and will mean you will have to cache for 3 consecutive days. On day 1 you are to find 3 (and only 3) caches. The next day you need just 1 cache and on day 3 you must find just 4 (and no more) caches. By Sunday we will have done 7 days of pi (3.141592) and it's killing us just doing that number on the day. This all ties in with a challenge I am waiting to be published. Travelbug race.. Our Oh Beep! Where are my other legs? is still in Australia. Tracking History (11904.7mi). Tempest Kayne Smith died on February 20, 2001. She died at the age of twelve years old. She died as a direct result of the religious harassment she received from her school-mates. This did not happen in some third-world country, but in Lincoln Park, Michigan USA. This Eucharist is offered in her honor in hopes of the day when freedom of religion actually includes all religions.
