GiveDirectly is an extraordinary organisation, working to end extreme poverty through an idea that is simple but revolutionary: give cash directly to people in extreme poverty and let them decide what they need most. Research shows this approach is not only effective but also deeply empowering.Since I (Robbie) first read about GiveDirectly in 2017, it has been the focus of almost all my charitable giving: I find the research-backed practices and incredibly meaningful recipient stories so compelling that almost every time I have thought in detail about the organisation and what they do, I have increased my regular giving. In this special Podcasthon episode of The Coach's Journey Podcast, Stephanie Hill, the VP, People at GiveDirectly, joins me to explore the connections between teaching, coaching, and leadership, and to outline the transformational work that GiveDirectly does. From her days working to recruit and develop thousands of teachers in New York City to her role in helping a rapidly scaling global nonprofit build strong teams, Stephanie shares deep insights into learning, growth, and the power of trusting people to know what they need.In this episode, we discuss, on GiveDirectly:Why giving cash directly to the poorest people in the world works!Common misconceptions about cash transfers as a form of philanthropy.Amazing stories from GiveDirectly's recipients. The Power of Trust – why both great coaching and effective philanthropy start from the belief that people know what they need. And on learning, coaching, culture and more:The Gradual Release Model – how great teaching (and coaching) helps people build confidence and autonomy over time.Lessons from Scaling – what it takes to grow an organization quickly while keeping core values intact.Building a Culture of Learning – how GiveDirectly fosters ongoing development among its globally distributed team.Leading with Values - how has GiveDirectly taken its company values and actually brought them to life.Stephanie's personal leadership journey – what she learned from recruiting and training 5,000 teachers a year and how those lessons apply to coaching, leadership and organizational growth today. This episode is packed with wisdom for coaches, leaders, and anyone passionate about learning, development, and making a meaningful impact.I can't wait to share GiveDirectly's amazing work with you, but it's not just that this is an amazing charity that made me want to feature GiveDirectly on the show; it's that it's a charity whose work closely aligns with the philosophy of coaching. At its heart, coaching is about trusting people, believing they have the answers within them, and supporting them to make the best choices for their own lives.GiveDirectly operates on the same principle. Rather than imposing solutions, it hands people the resources to create their own change. For coaches who want to make a difference in the world beyond their work, I can't think of a better organization to support: if you've never quite found a focus for your charitable giving that really resonates, or if you've ever wondered how you can contribute in a way that aligns with the values of coaching — courage, trust, empowerment, and belief in human potential — GiveDirectly could be a powerful answer. If you have a few pounds or dollars to spare this month or every month, consider giving to GiveDirectly. They will send it to someone for whom those few pounds or dollars will go further than you can possibly imagine, as part of a story of courage, empowerment and trust in the beauty of human nature. For more information about GiveDirectly, visit: https://www.givedirectly.org/ or https://www.linkedin.com/company/givedirectlyTo donate to GiveDirectly, visit: https://www.givedirectly.org/donate/For more information about Stephanie, visit https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephanie-hill-1232028For more information about Robbie Swale, visit https://www.robbieswale.com/.Read more about The Coach's Journey at www.thecoachsjourney.com.Music by My Good Man William: listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4KmeQUcTbeE31uFynHQLQgTo support the Coach's Journey, visit www.patreon.com/thecoachsjourney and to join the Coach's Journey Community visit www.thecoachsjourney.com/community.THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT THAT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN:Rutger Bregman: https://www.rutgerbregman.com/Bregman on tax at Davos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8ijiLqfXP0Bregman's TED Talk - "Poverty isn't a lack of character; it's a lack of cash": https://www.ted.com/talks/rutger_bregman_poverty_isn_t_a_lack_of_character_it_s_a_lack_of_cash/ Utopia for Realists: https://www.rutgerbregman.com/books/utopia-for-realists GiveDirectly Live: https://live.givedirectly.org/ GiveDirectly's Research: https://www.givedirectly.org/research-at-give-directly/ Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs GiveDirectly Donation Link for the US: https://www.givedirectly.org/donate/ GiveDirectly Donation Link for the UK: https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/5197#!/DonationDetailsHow to donate to GiveDirectly from other countries: https://www.givedirectly.org/giving-internationally Teach for America: https://www.teachforamerica.org/TeachFirst: https://www.teachfirst.org.uk/The GROW Model: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GROW_model Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Gallwey: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inner-Game-Tennis-ultimate-performance/dp/1035047926 GiveDirectly NPR Article: https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2019/12/02/781152563/researchers-find-a-remarkable-ripple-effect-when-you-give-cash-to-poor-families Carol Dweck and Growth Mindset: https://www.amazon.com/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck/dp/0345472322Elena Aguilar and "Mind the Gap": https://www.edweek.org/education/opinion-the-key-to-working-with-adult-learners-mind-the-gap/2018/02 Fred Kofman: https://www.fredkofman.org/The GiveDirectly Values: https://www.givedirectly.org/givedirectly-values/ The Leadership Pipeline (book): https://www.amazon.com/Leadership-Pipeline-Second-Edition-Developing/dp/0470894563How to Help GiveDirectly: https://www.givedirectly.org/how-to-help/Work at GiveDirectly: https://www.givedirectly.org/careers/ Podcasthon: https://podcasthon.org/ Book your place at Robbie and Claire Pedrick's event in Malvern in 2025: The Artful Coach and the Soulful Coaching Business. After university, she joined Teach For America in New York City and taught English Literature to low-income High School students in The Bronx while getting her Master's degree in teaching. She then worked for Teach For America as a coach to cohorts of new teachers. After a brief stint as a recruiter, she joined the New York City Department of Education to build a new model for teacher preparation - one that would integrate theory and practice and include a longer, more intentional gradual release of responsibility for new recruits. The program also created a new career-ladder position for the supervisors of these aspiring teachers - experienced educators who were selected and trained to not just share their classroom, but also provide targeted, actionable modeling and feedback that would accelerate the learning process.Stephanie worked to scale that program to prepare over 500 new teachers for NYC's hardest to staff schools each year, while eventually taking on leadership of the city's overall teacher recruitment and preparation - where she led a team to recruit and place over 5,000 new teachers each year.In April of 2020, she joined the international non-profit organization GiveDirectly as their first VP, People, just as the organization was going through a period of rapid growth, with ~75% headcount increase year over year. GiveDirectly takes an innovative approach to aid by giving unconditional cash to people living in extreme poverty, often using a technology-forward approach to maximize efficiency (and therefore dollars to recipients). Stephanie is proud to have led the People function for the past 5 years - building and defining recruitment, people operations, learning and development, talent planning and employee engagement for the organization.

On today's episode I discuss fixed mindset vs. growth mindset, and how it relates to women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Do you have a tendency to believe your qualities are carved in stone, with an urgency to prove yourself over and over? Do you limit your achievement and feel the need to constantly try to prove you are better than others? Do you have a perception that effort is only for people with deficiencies? If so, you may be stuck in a fixed mindset vs. a growth mindset. We can all experience this type of fixed mindset from time to time, but the gospel of Jesus Christ is all about growth! On this week's episode I share some thoughts of how we can shift to a growth mindset, and how our Heavenly Parents can best help us and guide us when we move toward growth and learning instead of being caught in a trap of perfectionism. Challenge: Take a few minutes to think about yourself and your life— in what areas of your life are you stuck in a fixed mindset? In what areas do you have a growth mindset? How can you shift to a growth mindset in more parts of your life? Inspired by the groundbreaking work of psychologist Carol S. Dweck. In this episode, we explore the dynamic interplay between two distinct attitudes that shape our approach to challenges, achievements, and personal growth.Understanding the Two Main Mindsets:1. Fixed Mindset: - Individuals believe their abilities, intelligence, and talents are fixed traits, inherent and unchangeable.2. Growth Mindset: - Individuals believe their abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, hard work, learning, and perseverance, fostering a belief in continuous improvement.Navigating Challenges:-Fixed Mindset: Tends to avoid challenges, fearing failure as a reflection of inherent inability.- Growth Mindset: Embraces challenges as opportunities for learning and skill development.View of Effort:-Fixed Mindset: Views effort as fruitless, associating hard work with a lack of natural talent.-Growth Mindset: Sees effort as a path to mastery, understanding that consistent hard work contributes to improvement.Response to Setbacks:-Fixed Mindset:* Interprets setbacks as a direct reflection of ability, possibly leading to giving up in the face of adversity.-Growth Mindset:* Views setbacks as temporary, integral to the learning process, bouncing back from failures as opportunities to learn and adapt.Feedback Reception:-Fixed Mindset: Less receptive to constructive criticism, viewing feedback as a judgment on inherent abilities.-Growth Mindset: Open to feedback, seeing it as valuable input for improvement, separate from personal worth.Mindset in Endurance Sports:- How does your mindset influence your approach to training, racing, and overcoming challenges?Exploring Mindset and Training:- Examine your attitude toward training and the importance of a growth mindset in embracing challenges.Mindset on Race Day Performance:- Can your mindset differ on race day?- How a growth mindset contributes to resiliency, adaptability, and perseverance during racing.Overcoming Setbacks and Challenges:- Address the inevitable setbacks and challenges faced in endurance sports.- How a growth mindset can lead to bouncing back, learning from failures, and continuing to progress.- Dive deeper into the concept of mindset by reading "Mindset" by Carol Dweck https://www.amazon.com/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck/dp/0345472322/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=mindset&qid=1702243512&sr=8-3

Back in March we attended the EXP Fast Forward conference in San Diego, and while we were there we heard a Realtor speak, and he wasn't talking about real estate, sales, or marketing, he was talking about imposter syndrome. That Realtor's name was Mike Proctor, and he's a top producing agent on the Whissle team in San Diego, and while Mike is an amazing Realtor, what we believe is the truly important work he is doing is talking about imposter syndrome, vulnerability, mental health, and parenthood. His message is not one that is being shared all over, and it is certainly not one we hear being spoken from the stage of a real estate conference, and we hope that Mike is changing that. We talked with Mike about how imposter syndrome impacted him, and how he worked to overcome it, mental health and being in sales, fatherhood and family life, and so much more. This was a super vulnerable conversation and we are so grateful to be able to share this one with you. Let's dive in! You can find Mike @procdiesel on Instagram Here is the link to the book Mindset that Mike talks about in the podcast: https://www.amazon.com/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck/dp/0345472322/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1683899496

Quote - “Successful people don't fear failure but understand that it's necessary to learn and grow from.” - Robert Kiyosaki "Fail it till you nail it" is a concept that encourages individuals to embrace failure as a positive and necessary aspect of the learning process. This mindset suggests that instead of fearing failure, individuals should strive to fail more frequently, as it leads to growth and eventual success. The podcast explores the various benefits of failing, such as increased resilience, learning from mistakes, and a greater appreciation for success. Failure is not something to be ashamed of but a valuable opportunity to learn and improve.I also emphasize the importance of taking risks and stepping outside of one's comfort zone, as this can lead to new experiences and growth. Fear of failure often holds people back, but by embracing failure and viewing it as a stepping stone rather than an obstacle, individuals can unlock their full potential. The podcast also discusses the importance of perseverance and how failure can fuel a drive to keep trying until success is achieved. Failure is a natural and necessary part of the journey toward success. By adopting a "fail it till you nail it" mindset, individuals can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.Overall, the podcast encourages listeners to embrace failure as a positive and necessary part of the learning process and to view it as a catalyst for growth and success. By failing more often and learning from mistakes, individuals can unlock their full potential and achieve their goals.A couple of resources to further your ability to fail it till you nail it:Dweck, C. “Like Martin Luther King, I have a dream. I dream that someday all teachers will teach students how to think rather than make them think. I dream that all students will understand how their brains work and use the knowledge to be successful and excel in whatever endeavor they choose.” Arizona School Administrator, Jeff Kleck Watch this interview on YouTube here https://youtu.be/2pDRrOOcX5s On this episode we will learn: ✔ About the educator who inspired Andrea to move in the direction of neuroscience in 2014. ✔ How he became interested in neuroscience, introducing Andrea to Carol Dweck and David A. Sousa. ✔ The moment of truth when Jeff met Andrea and gave her feedback that changed the direction of her work. ✔ How to handle criticism, and move forward even when it's difficult to hear. ✔ After 40 years in education, Jeff Kleck shares brain-based strategies he's used with students, athletes and his own children. Welcome back to The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we cover the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning (for schools) and emotional intelligence training (in the workplace) with tools, ideas and strategies that we can all use for immediate results, with our brain in mind. I'm Andrea Samadi, an author, and educator with a passion for learning specifically on the topics of health, wellbeing and productivity, and launched this podcast to share how important an understanding of our brain is for our everyday life and results using the most current brain research to inform our decisions. Our guest today is someone I've mentioned often on this podcast, but one day, I realized that I know very little about the person who encouraged me to pivot in the direction of neuroscience, back in 2014. Every interview I've ever done, someone always asks me “How did you end up doing a podcast on the topic of neuroscience?” and I tell the same story about how an educator urged me to go in this direction many years ago. I'm very intentional about the people I ask to come on the podcast. They are usually someone who is making an impact in the field of health, wellness, and education in some way, or has had an impact on my direction, and the work I've been doing over the years and while creating the questions for Dr. Ginger Campbell, who's well known for her podcast Brain Science[i], I stopped to think for a moment about how on the earth I ended up where I am today and I thought about our next guest. I never ignore those flashes of insight that interrupt me while working, as the connections I've made over the years are the only reason I am here today, working in this field of educational neuroscience, and so very passionate about it, with the incredible opportunity to think, learn and create every day. And I wouldn't have had the courage to move in the direction of Neuroscience, without the guidance of our next guest, Jeff Kleck,[ii] who is now the principal at Valley Christian School in Phoenix. I look forward to talking neuroscience with Jeff, someone I've not seen since he helped me to create my second book, Level Up: A Brain-Based Strategy. On today's episode #246, we'll be speaking with Jeff Kleck, and see if I can fill in the blanks of where his passion for neuroscience began, what he's doing now to help educators understand how their brain impacts learning, and what he thinks of the future of educational neuroscience in our schools, sports and workplace environments. Let's welcome my mentor to this field of educational neuroscience, Jeff Kleck. Intro: Welcome Jeff! It's incredible to see you again. Was it 2014 when we met last? Maybe 2015? Somewhere back then… Jeff, I reached out to you, as I mention in the back story that I never ignore those flashes of insight that come while working, and I was writing Dr. Ginger Campbell's interview questions, and for a moment, I was stumped. How on the earth did I get here, asking the host of the top neuroscience podcast questions for an upcoming interview. For a minute, I was just blown away, because you'll remember that day we met in your office, and you were handing me all these books off your bookshelf for me to read, I knew absolutely nothing about this topic. First off, I want to let you know how grateful I am that you presented me with this opportunity to learn more about the brain. Q1: Can we begin with where YOUR interest in neuroscience began? Why did you have all those books on your book shelf, and I know you gave me a ton of your hand-written notes and research to get started. Where did this interest begin for you? Q1B: I'll never forget you telling me to research Carol Dweck[iii]. I wrote her name on the back on a piece of paper, and her Mindset book took off in our schools after you had mentioned her work. I'm curious, who you are you studying now? Q2: If you think back to that day where we met in your office, and you gave me all of those books (I still have them all, one set is behind me) I know that you were really trying to help me, or I know you wouldn't have given me so much content to give me a running start. What do you remember about having to provide feedback about the direction I was going, that no one wants to say, but your feedback ended up being a huge turning point for me? Q3: One of the books you gave me was David A. Sousa's How the Brain Learns Series by Corwin Press. I can't even tell you how much this series impacted the work I've been doing since we met. I've interviewed Dr. Sousa (twice), have met many other Corwin Press authors, worked on projects with other companies with these authors and have used what I learned from Dr. Sousa to help my youngest daughter who needed new strategies to help her with reading comprehension. A huge thank you for that but I remember opening that book, and seeing all these charts about the brain, and memory, I almost thought that learning neuroscience was going to be too difficult for me. How are you approaching this topic with your teachers now, and do you receive any pushback on the topic at all? (does anyone talk about the reading wars—science vs whole language point of view)? Q4: I know you've been wearing the hat of an educator for most of your years (working in the admin side) but I wonder, when you took off this hat, and switch to being a student, what is something that you have learned over the years about the brain that has helped you? 4B: Did you use what you know about the brain with your children when you were raising them? 4C: What strategies did you use for athletes as a football coach? Q5: What's your vision for educational neuroscience in the future? What do you think will help our students in the classroom, athletics and even when they move into College and their future careers? Q6: Is there anything important that I have missed? Jeff, I want to thank from the bottom of my heart for coming on this podcast today to share your passion and vision for neuroscience in our classrooms of the future. I know I would not be doing what I'm doing today without your influence, and I'll be forever grateful for that. I do hope that you publish something someday to document everything you've learned on this topic over the years and if you do, please do come back on the podcast to share it. Most importantly, he continues to enjoy lifelong learning every day. In this episode Dr. Gaye Lang and Eduardo Briceno discuss: Having a growth mindset as a way to learn tolerance Improving through collaboration with others Giving people grace to ask you questions The role of leaders in tolerance Key Takeaways: Having a growth mindset is key to developing an attitude of tolerance. You need to start with the belief that you can change and that you can be better. Receiving feedback from others, taking it in and committing to change is the best way that you can constantly improve. Being able to be humble enough to receive feedback will take inner work and self-awareness. Give people the grace and space to ask you questions. If they don't ask questions, approach them and point out what you'd want them to know. You can't grow if you don't see anything else, you have to be able to see other options. Leaders must be the first to step up in the journey towards growth in the area of tolerance. They must set an example and walk their talk. People follow the leader and the members see if the leader is being genuine or not. “We have to do self-work. That's really important. We also can collaborate with others to grow together because other people can help us see what we don't see. Learning on our own, learning with others and helping others to learn.” - Eduardo Briceno Connect with Eduardo Briceno: Twitter: https://twitter.com/ebriceno8 Website: https://www.briceno.com/home | https://www.wiringgrowth.com/ | https://www.mindsetworks.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eduardo-briceno/ Important Resources: Mindset, by Carol Dweck: https://smile.amazon.com/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck-ebook/dp/B000FCKPHG Carol Dweck's TED Talk on growth mindset: https://www.ted.com/talks/carol_dweck_the_power_of_believing_that_you_can_improve?language=la Eduardo's TEDx Talk on growth mindset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN34FNbOKXc Connect with Dr. Gaye Lang: Don't forget to subscribe to the show, so that you don't miss a single episode; and please leave a rating and review. On a scale of one to ten, where can you rate your productivity? In this episode, I have Deb Calvert joining me on the show. She is the queen of productivity. Deb loves getting things done as opposed to just being busy. In this episode, we'll get to know Deb better and all the awesome things she is doing in the world. Who is Deb Calvert? In today's episode, we talk about the effectiveness of power strokes in keeping your team motivated when creating full funnel freedom. Simply put, a power stroke is a psychological unit of recognition. They can be positive, negative or rubber band, which starts off positive and ends up negative like a rubber band snapping back. Today, we are going into the details of using power strokes in your sales team. What You'll Learn: - Definition of power strokes - How power strokes help with keeping your team motivated - Understanding your team's need for recognition - The types of strokes readily available for today's leaders - The consequences of stroke deprivation - How to custom your strokes for different types of individuals in your team - Handwritten strokes and why they are so effective - Why you need to track changes and the efficacy of your power strokes - Tell-tale signs your power strokes are motivating your team The interesting thing is that all individuals require a certain number of strokes per day. It doesn't matter if it's a positive or a negative stroke, we all crave the attention that comes with being recognized. Unfortunately, not many leaders practice giving out power strokes to their team members every day, and the ones that do are not that intentional about it. Here's the thing, the high-archiving salespeople want to work for someone who supports, motivates and recognizes them as well. In this edition of The Way Out I'm incredibly honored to bring you an exceptionally powerful, illuminating, relatable, and inspiring interview with person in long term recovery and co-founder of WorkIT Health, Lisa McLaughlin. Lisa and I had a lot in common coming of age in the same era in the Midwest of the U.S., albeit in different cities proper, which made for one of the most entertaining interviews I've personally done, and for that matter one of the best we've ever had on The Way Out in quite some time. Lisa shares with us her journey to and through recovery to this point with remarkable insight, introspection, and relatability that's at once revealing and instructive to our own individual recovery journeys. What's more, Lisa shares the collective experiences that motivated her to found Workit Health along with cofounder Robin McIntosh, which is a telemedicine care service focused on treating Substance Use Disorder that offers a wide range of services including harm reduction, medication assisted recovery, CBT, and mental health services to address all of the needs of the human being that is seeking care. So many of us in Recovery can relate to the agonizing experience of the death of a loved due to Substance Use Disorder, and Lisa is no exception. Their mission is embodied by a phrase she shares with us in the interview, “We do what we do for the lost, to the living”. Together, Lisa and Robin decided that they were going to do something about it by creating Workit Health to address the gaps in the existing model of care for Substance Use Disorder and bring all established methodologies and interventions to bear through a single, low barrier, source. Lisa and I have a captivating discussion about the importance of embracing all pathways to recovery and recovering out loud as she shares her amazing recovery journey, all the while spreading the message that rewarding and enduring recovery is absolutely possible and totally worth it when you workit so listen up.
