This sermon was preached by guest preacher David Thomas on Matthew 6:5–13 and is part of our series House of Prayer.
Meteorologist David Thomas talks about the morning fog advisory with Susan on the 17th of February.
For this episode we're joined — all the way from Laurel Canyon — by the husband-and-wife tag team that is Jeff Walker and Kim Gottlieb(-Walker). Married for 53 years, Jeff and Kim have worked in diverse capacities in the music business and talk about their experiences over those five-plus decades. We start with the couple's work together on monthly freesheet Music World, focusing on their 1973 encounters with Tom Waits and Gram Parsons (plus a 15-year-old Cameron Crowe tagging along). After audio clips of both Waits and Parsons, we hear a 1987 clip of Gram's great singing partner Emmylou Harris talking to Adam Sweeting about... Gram Parsons. Interweaving tales of Jeff's life as a publicity director and Kim's career as a photographer, we hear about Island Records, Jamaica and the couple's close relationship with Bob Marley, concluding with Jeff's account of being with Bob after the chief Wailer was shot by gunmen in 1976. After Jasper offers his thoughts on Bad Bunny's ICE-breaking half-time show at the Super Bowl, Kim channels her late '60s protesting self and eloquently summarises her feelings about staying sane in Trump's dystopian America. Finally, Mark quotes from newly-added library interviews with Captain Beefheart (1979) and David Thomas (1985), while Jasper hails Joe Muggs' 2021 piece about Joel Culpepper. Many thanks to special guests Kim Gottlieb-Walker and Jeff Walker. Visit Kim's website at lenswoman.com and read Jeff's writing on Rock's Backpages. Pieces discussed: Tom Waits: Thursday Afternoon, Sober as a Judge, Jackson Browne, Techno-Rock: Six Teutons And What Do You Get — A Programmed Sequencer And The Doppler Effect, Emmylou Harris audio, Captain Beefheart Pulls A Hat Out of His Rabbit, David Thomas: Unscrambling the egg man and Joel Culpepper: Almost Famous.
Sissy Goff and David Thomas talk with Dr. Preston Sprinkle about how parents and the church can help kids navigate identity, gender, and sexuality with both clarity and compassion. Preston emphasizes being a non-anxious presence, starting age-appropriate, Jesus-centered conversations early, and building strong relationships that keep hard conversations open. Together, they explore how conviction and kindness can coexist, why discomfort builds resilience, and how parents can respond without panic or pressure. What if prayer isn't just something we do, but the place where our faith is formed? In this message, we explore Jesus' encounter with the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15 and discover a deeper, more resilient way of praying. Prayer is more than a discipline — it's the lifeline of our relationship with God and the source of everything that truly matters. What looks like silence or resistance from Jesus is actually divine formation. As this desperate mother cries out, kneels, and boldly contends, we see what authentic faith looks like: persistent, humble, and unwilling to let go. God's silence is not His absence, and delay is not denial — it's development. Jesus is still looking for faith-filled intercessors who will stay in the ring, contend with His promises, and keep pressing until breakthrough comes. This is the prayer that heals hearts, sets captives free, and changes lives.

In this episode, Sissy Goff and David Thomas sit down with Justin Giboney for a timely, thoughtful conversation about what kids need right now in an increasingly polarized world. Justin weaves together faith, history, and parenting wisdom to explore how compassion and conviction are not opposites but essential partners in forming resilient, grounded kids. Drawing from the Civil Rights Movement, personal stories, and his own parenting, he encourages parents to focus on formation over reaction, to model humility and fortitude, and to help kids build an identity rooted first in who God says they are. Drawing from his own story and decades of research, Marc unpacks why all emotions are information, explains the RULER framework in a practical, parent-friendly way, and offers concrete tools for navigating big feelings at home. Sissy Goff and David Thomas welcome Devon Kuntzman, founder of Transforming Toddlerhood, for a practical conversation about what toddlers need most right now. Devon reframes challenging toddler behavior as communication—not defiance—explaining how immature brain development, limited language, and sensory overload shape big emotions. She encourages parents to focus on co-regulation, connection, and skill-building rather than punishment, offering realistic strategies for setting boundaries, repairing relationships, and weaving play into everyday routines. Devon reminds caregivers that progress—not perfection—is the goal, and that showing up as a calm, human presence lays the foundation for resilient, emotionally healthy kids. Growing up in Huntington Beach, California, Dave Thomas was all about that adrenaline rush…. Surfing, motocross, snowboarding, women, fighting, and partying. He was athletic and ambitious, with plenty of talent and chances, but a wild lifestyle and poor choices led him to lose it all.Beneath the tough exterior was a guy with a heart, struggling with his own addiction while witnessing his father's battle with meth. Trying to stay strong, Dave learned early on to conceal his feelings, thinking that true strength meant never showing any weakness.By the end of 2016, everything took a turn. Getting sober was just the start but surrendering to Christ changed everything. Now, Dave is a husband and father of three, discovering what it really means to be there for his kids, a loyal husband, and a man guided by God. His life is now centered around faith, family, discipline, and service. As an online coach, Dave supports others in rebuilding their bodies, minds, and faith, showing that redemption is real and freedom is achievable.
David Thomas, a psychologist, was attending an elderly grandpa's funeral. David watched as two of the man's grandsons approached the casket. One boy, who was six years old, cried loudly. Beside him stood another boy– fourteen years old– who was holding back his tears. David overheard some adults express concern about the crying six year old. But David was more worried about the silent older boy. While the six year old was clearly processing his emotions, the fourteen year old was bottling up feelings that would have to be dealt with eventually. When your son goes through a loss or something difficult, be sure to help him process his feelings. Let him know that it's more than OK for men to display emotions– after all, Jesus cried openly, too. For more ideas on raising boys to be godly men, go to TrailLife USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.

David Thomas is the Executive Director of Daystar Counseling Ministries in Nashville, Tennessee and has co-authored eleven books. He is also a popular podcast host who publishes parenting resources at his site raisingboysandgirls.com. David chats with Dan Peterson and Kirk Avery about the recent Regents staff training he led on how to raise emotionally strong kids.
Do girls feel more emotions than boys? David Thomas, a psychologist and author, says this common belief is not true. He says boys feel just as deeply as girls, but often don't know how to process those feelings as well as girls do. As parents of boys, it's important that we help our sons put words to their feelings. One way to do that is to simply discuss emotions out loud. When you're watching a TV show with your son, discuss what characters seem to be feeling– are they embarrassed? Frustrated? You can even find charts of feelings words online and put them on your fridge. Help your son find words for his feelings, and you might be surprised to discover the range of emotions he goes through each day. Sissy Goff and David Thomas kick off a new series by exploring five things kids need most socially right now. Drawing from decades of counseling experience and current research, they unpack why today's kids are struggling with civility, empathy, reciprocity, belonging, and real-time social practice. They discuss how screens, cultural tone, and isolation are shaping kids' relationships—and offer practical, doable ways parents can help at home, from modeling kind disagreement to creating opportunities for face-to-face connection. This hopeful, practical conversation reminds parents that social skills are built through practice, and that small, intentional shifts can make a meaningful difference in kids' lives. In this episode, Dr. Gary Chapman joins Sissy Goff and David Thomas to explore what kids need most right now: feeling deeply and consistently loved. Drawing from decades of counseling families and his work with the Five Love Languages, Dr. Chapman explains how children uniquely receive love, how parents can identify a child's primary love language, and why behavior is often a signal that a child's “love tank” is running low. The conversation offers practical, hope-filled guidance for adapting love languages as kids grow, navigating different personalities within one family, and building daily rhythms—like shared meals and one-on-one time—that foster connection, resilience, and lasting emotional security. Sissy Goff and David Thomas talk with Justin Whitmel Earley about his new book The Body Teaches the Soul and how our everyday physical habits—like breathing, sleep, movement, and technology use—quietly shape our spiritual lives and parenting. Justin shares how burnout and anxiety led him to discover that lasting change comes not from trying harder, but from practicing small, embodied habits that help us respond with patience, presence, and grace. I lied on this one! Our SECOND National Champion to join us on the show (Shoutout to@kylewiltjer) we have one of the best to do it in the late 90's, a smooth guard from Brampton Mr. David Thomas! David has a great story from time in high school to figuring out what College to attend. In the end he chose Michigan State University, home of legends like Magic Johnson and many others. What came to fruition was a moment in history for MSU, the 2000 National Championship defeating the Florida Gators in the final! Being around so many great teammates like Mateen Cleaves and Mo Pete, David elevated his game and although his stats weren't high he put his name into the NBA draft. After a month long stint in Miami David didn't crack a roster and took his talents to Australia where he had lots of success. It was a trip with the Canadian National Team where David knew the time had come, and he had to walk from the game. Since retiring, David spent multiple seasons with the Michigan State Team but took time away to be closer to family. David now finds himself working multiple jobs, balancing life and kids who are great athletes themselves! His son is a top recruit in the State! Episode 174 is a gem, with a great person. We thank David for being with us and hope you can find time to spend your Boxing Day with us! Ray Thomas' recent decision to quit his high pressure role triggered a flood of tributes for the hugely popular media identity. Ray's many fans were pleased to learn he'll still be appearing on Sky Thoroughbred Central programmes “This Week Next Week” and “News Central” and intends to continue his long time hosting role on the Sunday morning edition of Sky Racing Radio's “Big Sports Breakfast”. Ray's passion for multiple sports was evident from an early age, but horse racing prevailed when it was time for the aspiring journalist to settle on a career path. That career has been well documented, but I'd like to add my tribute to the many he's already received from colleagues and followers. He's our podcast guest this week. Ray begins by revisiting his final day in the Sydney Press Room, and the touching tribute accorded him in the Newscorp office a few days later. The popular journalist talks about the effects of his sudden departure from a very busy role. Ray talks about a 2023 health scare and the i decision to take stock of his hectic lifestyle. He talks of his late father's career as an RAAF communications operator, a job that took him to several parts of the world. Young Raymond Grant was born during David Thomas' Hong Kong stint in the early 1960's. Ray looks back on his dad's transfer to Perth where his love of sport began. His interest in horse racing was triggered by the deeds of two notable thoroughbred mares and one freakishly talented harness horse. Ray says one particular race call had an amazing impact on him. The multimedia personality looks back on his own participation in Aussie Rules and cricket during those early years in WA. He talks of the decision to follow his father into the air force. Ray acknowledges his elderly mother Marlene and siblings Tony and Stacey. He talks about his own nine year career with the RAAF. Ray takes us through the progression of roles with the Melbourne Herald Sun, the Sydney based Sportsman and finally his transition to Daily Telegraph Racing Editor, an appointment that came out of the blue. Ray takes us back to some of the biggest stories he covered from the mid nineties up to his recent retirement. From a media viewpoint some of them were veritable “bombshells”. The sixty one year old takes delight in revisiting the five races he rates as the most memorable he got to cover for Newscorp. Ray talks about the heartbreaking Friday afternoon in the Newscorp office when much loved Rugby League writer Peter Frilingos suffered a fatal heart attack at his desk. The legendary journalist was enormously thrilled when appointed to the Daily Telegraph team for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. To this day he savours memories of Cathy Freeman's dash for gold in the 400m. He was thrilled to have what he called “the best seat in the house”. Ian Thorpe's unforgettable final leg in the 4x100m relay remains another indelible memory. (Beat American Gary Hall Jnr who'd been making some idle threats in the media) Perhaps the major sporting event Ray enjoyed the most as a working journalist was the Wimbledon men's final of 2012 when Roger Federer won his seventh title at the All England Club. This was a bittersweet occasion for Ray whose father had passed away the previous year. He's currently enjoying his new found role of grandfather to eighteen months old Charlotte. That role will soon be expanded. This is a lovely stroll down memory lane with a legend of the Australian racing media.

A lot of people are calling critical minerals a major opportunity for Canada - but we explain why their real benefit may be more strategic than economic. We ask why the price of toilet paper is so d@#m hard to figure out, and talk to author David Thomas about his new biography of Prem Watsa, the richest, savviest Canadian you've never heard of, behind one of Canada's most successful companies.
Sissy and David celebrate the strengths of Enneagram Sixes—their loyalty, courage, diligence, and care for the common good—while naming the real challenges of worst-case thinking, indecision, and hypervigilance. They offer practical ideas for Six parents (trust your gut, build steady routines, model bravery “even when you feel afraid”) and simple ways to support a child who might be a Six (reassure safety, give age-appropriate choices, and nudge into small risks). The theme: Sixes hold families and communities together more than they realize. Between ages 6 and 10, kids are learning big lessons about honesty, responsibility, and gratitude…and those moments don't always feel peaceful. Today Karen and Emily are talking about shaping character during these years. From handling bad attitudes and entitlement to teaching kids about truthfulness and contentment, they share practical ways to mold your child's heart without losing your cool.Episode Recap:My 10 yr old pitches a fit when he has to do something he's not prepared for (5:50)Life doesn't always go the way we want it to go, that's what builds character (10:50)My 6 yr old struggles with gratitude and contentment (11:30)My kiddo is a whiny complainer! Help (17:50)My niece recently stole a ring from my home and lied about it, my sister won't address it! (20:40)|Scripture: Proverbs 22:6 (NIV) Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.Discussion Questions: Why is it important to address small character issues early, instead of assuming kids will “grow out of them”?Do your kids struggle with gratitude and contentment? What did you think of Karen's approach to dealing with that heart issue? What's one area of character (honesty, gratitude, perseverance, responsibility) that you want to intentionally strengthen in your child this month?Resources:Use coupon code HBDK for 30% off a cozy Peace sweatshirt Raising Emotionally Strong Boys with David Thomas: https://amzn.to/4hkvDk9A Grown Up's Guide to Kids' Wiring: https://amzn.to/3J8ZTlq
Today we're re-airing a special conversation that I got to have with my sister, Tatum Green, and our friend and counselor, David Thomas. We first shared this conversation back in February when Where Did TJ Go? released, and it's one that so many of you have told me has stayed with you. Today on October 15th — Infant Loss Awareness Day — we wanted to bring it back, to honor the families who have walked through loss, to hold space for your stories, and to remind you that you're not alone. This is a tender and honest conversation — we talk about grief, faith, and what it looks like to keep trusting God when life doesn't turn out the way you thought it would. David offers such wise, gentle guidance, and I'm just so grateful for how he helped us put words to what can feel impossible to say. Okay I'm going to read a quote, “If you're not paying attention to how you affect other people, you're missing a big piece of what makes life work. What you don't know about yourself can hurt you, others, and your relationships.” This wise quote is from Suzanne Stabile, of course. This feels so true and it feels exactly why we're diving into what we're diving into over the next several weeks. It honestly feels appropriate that we would kick off this part of the Parenting Personalities series on the Enneagram with a quote from our dear friend, Suzanne Stabile. Because we would both say that she has hands down taught us the most about the Enneagram. She's our favorite Enneagram teacher, and so we're going to be quoting her all throughout this time and sharing things we've learned through all of her decades of studying this great ancient wisdom tool. We're excited to bring all that we've learned through her and how we see that walked out in parenting. We talked about this recently, but why wouldn't we want to grow? Those of us who love kids or in relationship to anyone else, in fact we would love for you to share these episodes with your kids' grandparents, with aunts and uncles, with educators. Really anybody in your life, you don't have to be a parent, to hopefully learn from and glean from the growth and grace that's going to weave all throughout these conversations. Attachment has become a buzzword in parenting circles—but what does it really mean for your kids and your family? In this episode, we unpack the history of attachment theory, clear up common misconceptions, and share practical ways to think about what your child truly needs. We'll cover: Why “attachment” has resurfaced as such a hot topic. How attachment impacts early development and later relationships. The difference between holding information wisely vs. fearfully. The four styles of attachment—starting with what a secure attachment looks like. Real-life examples of how parents can unintentionally give fear too much power. Whether you've ever worried about separation anxiety, or just wondered, “Am I doing enough for my child?”—this episode will help you breathe easier and focus on what matters most. . . . . . . We're jumping back in with another episode in our Parenting Personalities series, and we are excited about this episode! This episode is on Birth Order, and can I tell you something fun that I love to do. When kids come for their very first visit at Daystar, we call it an assessment. We take kids on a tour around the Daystar house, they get to meet the dogs, we get them a snack, and we sit down to talk. We meet with their parents at a later point. During my time with just the kid, I love to not look at the paperwork, which would inform where they would fall in birth order and try and make a guess. I don't want to brag on myself, but I'm going to say that I have a pretty high percentage. I have a strong batting average in that space. I think it's the reality of us having done this work for a lot of decades. Knowing so many of the things we're about to talk about with birth order and seeing little lumps as watching where kids may drop some crumbs, that's really fun to do. Listen in as we will share two primary things about oldest daughters and oldest sons, children who fall in the middle, and the youngest kids in birth order and all of their coping strategies. Recommended books to read: Braver, Stronger, Smarter by: Sissy Goff (For parents with daughters in younger years and elementary grades) Brave by: Sissy Goff (For parents of daughters in Middle school and High school) Growth Mindset by: Carol Dweck (For parents of 1st born sons and daughters) The Gifts of Perfection by: Brene Brown (For parents who are 1st borns) . . . . . . We're so excited about this episode, because we want every kid who may be extroverted or introverted to know that their gifts are amazing and that their limitations are amazing too! We're going to talk about 3 things parents of extroverted and introverted girls need to know and 3 things parents of extroverted and introverted boys need to know. There's a great book that we both love, The Hidden Gifts of the Introverted Child, by Marti Olsen Laney. Listen to this description of the differences, introverts generally prefer stimulation in small manageable doses whereas extroverts seek lots of action and excitement. An introvert may pursue topics in depth, while an extrovert may be more oriented toward breadth. An introvert may need time to process his/her emotions before responding. An extrovert is more likely to react in the moment. We've seen a lot of evidence of this being true. Another book we love, called Quiet, which also revolutionized my perspective on it, and I recommend it to parents of introverts all the time. . . . . . . Ya'll it was the first time in history that we have had a contestant from the Bachelor, and let me tell you in my counseling office how many years I've been talking about the Bachelor. So one of my questions was at what age and should moms and girls watch it together. And she had some great thoughts along the line. We are super excited for you to hear this conversation with Madi Prewett Troutt. I want you to stick around to the end. Because there was this incredible moment, where she was talking about if you are parenting a baby you love who is just sitting in a poopy diaper right now covered in food. What that moment could teach you about the heart of God. Madison “Madi” Prewett Troutt, is a speaker, TV personality, host of the Stay True podcast, and bestselling author of Made for This Moment, The Love Everybody Wants, and Dare to Be True. She has a degree in communications from Auburn University and a certificate in ministry in pastoral leadership through Highlands College. In the summer months, not only am I the director of our little summer camp program called Hopetown. I'm also the worship leader and worship music chooser for kids in 2nd - 12th grades. And let me tell you, as a therapist for kids for over 30 years, I am very choosy when it comes to the lyrics that these kids sing. They are kids who have known heartache, who have experienced loss of all shapes and sizes, trauma, anxiety, depression, and more. They are kids who have questioned whether God loves them in the midst of their pain. Whether he cares and is still for them and for their families. And so I desperately want the words we sing each night to be truth. And not just truth that glosses over their heart, but truth that seeps into it and points them toward the one who is in the midst of the heart with them and longs for their healing. There's truly no one I trust more to speak words of life and healing through worship, than the three women who are on our podcast today, and the bands they represent. I am delighted for you to listen to the wisdom of our friends, Sandra McCracken, Leslie Jordan, and Taylor Leonhardt. Download their music individually and together, as Paper Horses and Mission House music along with Jess Rey. We promise you will be so very glad you did and glad you listened to this episode with these wise amazing dear friends of ours.
