Why are Black women still expected to carry everything without complaint? They keep telling Black women to be strong, to push through, to hold it all together. But what they never address is the damage that message leaves behind—mentally, physically, emotionally. The burnout, the silence, the pressure to succeed at the expense of our well-being. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything right and still paying too high a price, you're not imagining it. You're navigating systems that were never designed with your safety in mind. In this special National Black Girl Month™ episode, you're invited into a powerful conversation with Dr. Vanessa Perry, global thought leader, psychologist, and CEO of The Perry Group. Alongside Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown, we explore what Superwoman Syndrome actually costs Black women—and how to stop carrying what was never ours to begin with. This episode answers the unspoken questions so many Black women ask themselves: Why do I feel like success is wearing me down? Is it possible to lead without losing myself? How do I reclaim peace when the world expects performance? Dr. Perry shares insights from over 25 years of research and executive advising in Fortune 500 companies, federal agencies, and high-level leadership spaces. Together, we discuss how to name the cycle, build supportive community, and create spaces—personally and professionally—where Black women no longer have to prove themselves to belong. This isn't just about workplace equity. It's about redefining what thriving looks like on our own terms. → Learn more and access your free toolkit at nationalblackgirlmonth.com → Join our virtual community: facebook.com/groups/nationalblackgirlmonth → Connect with Dr. Venessa Perry: https://www.linkedin.com/in/venessam/ → Connect with Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown: www.instagram.com/dr.rikesha → Connect with Felicia Ford: www.threads.net/@friendscallmefe Join Momentum Lab: https://lab.feliciafordandco.com About Dr. Venessa Perry: Dr. Venessa M. This #coacbetter episode is about the importance of intentional and structured conversations. This is a highlight from one of Kim's favorite episodes from a previous season, featuring Michele Mattoon, Executive Director of the National School Reform Faculty. Recently as part of one of AAICIS Leaders Speaker Series we had Jennifer Abrams share with our community about Stretching Your Learning Edges (Jennifer has also been a guest on the podcast if you want to check out that episode), and as she said on the podcast, Jennifer highlighted how as educators we are not trained in having conversations with other adults. Having intentional and structured conversations, through the use of protocols, can really help us navigate difficult and challenging topics that, as Michele says, sometimes need “guardrails”. Because instructional coaches work with so many different stakeholders, with so many different perspectives, experiences and opinions, it's so important for us to know how to structure conversation for productive discourse and dialogue. Protocols are one way we can do that. If protocols are new to you, make sure to check out the full episode with Michele. Once you start using protocols in your professional learning, and group conversations, you won't go back.  Find the show notes for this episode here. My guests today are Rei Wang and Anita Hossain, Co-founders of coaching platform The Grand, which was seed funded by Alexis Ohanian's firm Seven Seven Six in 2023. Rei is the Chief Product Officer and Anita is the CEO. I met Rei ages ago, in her early days in NYC at General Assembly, where she worked as a Product Manager and Global Community Lead, developing educational opportunities for students. And I was excited to interview her about her work as the CEO of the Dorm Room fund at First Round Capital a few years back to get her perspectives around the intersection of community and product design…especially when the community IS the product. Check out that conversation here. Rei cultivated a vibrant startup ecosystem, mentoring over 250 entrepreneurs on various aspects of business management and fundraising. Their leadership garnered recognition, including the Forbes 30 under 30 award. Rei and Anita met during their time at First Round Capital, where Anita was the Head of Knowledge. While there, she helped hundreds of entrepreneurs connect deeply and vulnerably, to share their concerns and to learn from each other. Anita was also an executive coach with the renowned coaching firm, Reboot, and is a certified Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner. Key Advice for Working Through Challenges Prevention is first and foremost! Speak early and often to reduce buildup, bottling up and boiling over of tensions Make feedback about actions and behaviors, not about the person or their personality Rei suggests that using a simple framework like SBIO is a great way to frame feedback. (Situation or data, the Behavior you see, the Impact it has on you, and the Opportunity for improvement or transformation) Make sure feedback conversations are two-sided, with both partners regularly asking for and offering feedback Anita underscores the importance of Co-Creation of resolutions to challenges instead of telling someone to be different. Working on these tensions with a sense of collaboration can lead to reduced defensiveness. Do you want to create content that will actually attract the right audience? “Well, of course, Paul!”, right? Then you need to be intentional with your conversations. A lot of us put random content out there just to get something, anything out! Or we get overwhelmed and don't do anything at all because,in the moment,we're busy trying to create this perfect thing, something that we think might be relevant and we end up freezing up. Instead of doing either of those things, we need to give ourselves time to be intentional and plan out what we're saying. The key is looking at our potential clients, the people that are going to buy our products or services and figuring out what is relevant to them. Then, instead of putting randomness out into the world, we can have clear intentional conversations with them. So, take the time, map it out and give yourself space to be intentional. How can you be more intentional with your conversations?

Today I want to give you three practical ways you can be intentional with your conversations  1. Invite someone to church It sounds old school, but here is what I have found. If they attend or not, it always gets a response. 2. … And what else?  As people, we like to talk about ourselves. If someone is telling you about their rough day or what is going on in their life, don't hesitate to ask them, “and what else?” This question can quickly get someone to go deeper than just a surface relationship.  It always takes the conversation to a deeper level.  3. Talk about your faith This always makes people feel funny like you are pushing your faith on someone else. However, we do it all the time with our sports teams, our kid's accomplishments, the news, or our favorite podcast that just dropped a new episode. Why is it weird if we mention what God showed us in our devotions this morning, or a way God has answered prayer, or anything spiritual?

Ctrl+Alt+Delete with Lisa Duerre: For Leaders In Tech Escaping Burnout and Rebooting Leadership

In this episode of Ctrl + Alt + Delete with Lisa Duerre™ - Make sure to lean in during these key moments in the episode: [1:44] Research and history behind writing the book [3:08] Creating a culture where freeing, calling out, or preventing the elephant in the room is the norm [15:49] Missed opportunities to communicate our needs and be able to connect more deeply [17:12] Design of the book for a neurodivergent brain [22:56] Three kinds of avoidance: aggressive, fearful, conscious [22:56] [26:58] What's at stake when you're afraid of loss [38:46] The role of self-awareness and relationship communication [42:15] Self-awareness, re-calibration and changing the question or reaction [44:35] Impact of knowing your intended outcome before any conversation [49:10] The difference between good intentions and shadow intentions [53:32] How do you know if someone's shadow intention is speaking? KEY TAKEAWAYS: Don't Feed the Elephants is about the impacts of conflict avoidance and how to have deep meaningful relationships in ways that don't feel uncomfortable. Building on the work of Conversational Intelligence, “our success is dependent on our relationships, and our relationships are dependent on our conversations, Sarah explores how we can have more intentional and thoughtful conversations with ourselves, with others, with our teams. When we acknowledge an elephant is in the room, we have a choice to free it or feed it. When we allow an elephant to linger, distrust increases and trust decreases. Team members become disengaged and disheartened. Creativity and innovation cannot thrive. Before any conversation, we need to know our intended outcome. Pausing before entering the conversation to gain self-awareness around the initial stress response, self-regulate, recalibrate, and show up as a better version of you, as a leader and as a human. As a leader, it is important to realize you don't get to decide if you are trustworthy; other people do. To build psychologically safe work cultures, leaders must build trust by being open to feedback, becoming curious about it, take action and follow through with their team. Choosing to free the elephant rather than feed it.
