The new semi-autobiographical play “The Reservoir” spins a comedic narrative around cognitive reserve, the idea that doing brain-stimulating activities can prevent or delay the onset of dementia symptoms. It's currently running at the Atlantic Theater Company and co-produced by The Ensemble Studio Theater in New York.* Host Ira Flatow talks with playwright Jake Brasch about his inspiration for the play and how to mesh science into the theater. Then, neurologist Marilyn Albert discusses some of the latest science of mental stimulation and dementia. After following a diverse group of older adults for 20 years, her research found that a modest amount of specialized cognitive training reduced dementia risk by 25%. You can try a very similar brain training exercise at home. *“The Reservoir” received funding from the Sloan Foundation, which also helps support Science Friday. Guests: Jake Brasch is a writer, performer, composer, clown, and writer of the new play “The Reservoir.” Dr. Marilyn Albert is a professor of neurology and director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at Johns Hopkins Medicine.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. John is joined by his pal Tim Miller—OG Never Trumper and host of The Bulwark Podcast—for an extended therapy session a week out from the start of Donald Trump's second term. Tim explains why he finds it impossible to care about Trump non-sentence sentencing or the impending release of Special Counsel Jack Smith's report on Trump's role in January 6; his take on the collective tongue bath being given 45/47 by the tech billionaire class; and the long-run political implications of the face-off between Steve Bannon and Elon Musk. Tim also describes his strategy for combating his impulses towards nihilism in the face of what Trump 2.0 signifies and may hold in store: from hitting Tipitina's and gorging himself on crawfish to trekking to the UK to see Oasis reunite (hopefully!) this summer. On this episode of the Hot Spot series, Gabriel Ornelas sits down with Yiming Lin. He's the creator and food ethnographer behind Literally.Starving—the highly popular social media platform and human interest food account he started in the summer of 2022 as a means of understanding his personal relationships with food and creating community as a new resident to New York. It's no surprise that in less than a year, Literally.Starving has garnered over 3 million subscribers from around the world and has been featured on BuzzFeed, First We Feast, World Journal, Fox News, and numerous other publications. We're excited to have him at On The Pass where we dig deeper into his creator journey. This journey began long before the genesis of Literally.Starving and stretches back to when his Chinese immigrant parents sought a better opportunity and escaped China's one child policy regulations. Yiming's parents settled in Tampa, Florida and opened a local Chinese-American takeout restaurant, which is where he truly found his love and deep curiosity for cooking and how food brings people together. In this episode, we discuss the impact of his upbringing in his family's restaurant, the origins of Literally.Starving, the evolution of both his content creator journey and this platform, and the responsibility and ethics around creating media and having a growing, global platform. It's a story about entrepreneurship, community building, and following one's passions. Hungry for more? Let's get into our exciting conversation with Yiming Lin of Literally.Starving! Guest: Dave McJannet, CEO of HashiCorpTo scale a company effectively, says HashiCorp CEO Dave McJannet, you will have to make something like 10 decisions every single day. “There's generally one that really needs to be right, but there are eight that if you get them wrong, you will cause real damage to yourself,” he says. “It won't be fatal, and a lot of times, it's cultural damage.” Sometimes, he adds, these decisions can seem innocuous, like deciding how to run internal town halls with workers. But even small choices can create a “cultural crater” that you'll have to dig yourself out of three months later. In this episode, Dave and Joubin discuss returning to the office, the sales data flow, unstructured problem-solving, why companies grow like trees, anonymous town halls entrepreneurs-in-residence, go to market vs. product, committing to the job, the executive “CPU tax,” and the 30-to-100 phase shift. University of Auckland Audiology Professor, Grant Searchfield says older people with undetected and untreated hearing loss are at risk of more rapid cognitive decline. With an ageing population, in the next 20 years, people with dementia is set to double. Professor Searchfield says multiple studies of ageing populations have shown that people with normal hearing, or with hearing normalised through the use of hearing aids have better cognition - than those with hearing loss who are not using aids. He says a Government subsidy for the devices, while not a cure for dementia, could potentially reduce the escalating costs of dementia care.

On the latest episode of the Quadcast, MCI executive director Marjorie Malpiede speaks with Stephanie Marken, partner of the education division at Gallup, and Dr. Zainab Okolo, former strategy officer at Lumina Foundation and current senior vice president of policy, advocacy and government relations for The JED Foundation. Together, the two experts discuss the results and implications of a recent report co-produced by Gallup and Lumina, called: “Stressed Out and Stopping Out: The Mental Health Crisis in Higher Education.” Among its findings, this survey reveals the critical barrier emotional stress poses to not only enrolled students finishing their degree but prospective students enrolling at all. The response from colleges and universities, Marken and Okolo suggest, must focus on developing a culture of care on campus that can see students through to graduation.
Sleep, glorious sleep! We all know we need it for a healthy brain. Scientists have understood for some years now that spinal fluid washes through the brain during deep sleep, removing waste and leaving the brain refreshed for the next day. Now, a team of researchers have triggered the flow of spinal fluid in the AWAKE brain. It's a new development in understanding how the brain maintains itself. Laura Lewis, an associate professor at MIT, spoke with CBC's James Grudic.
Common factors for longevity from the neuropsychiatrist with oversight of one of the world's largest studies of centenarians, is reaching 150 possible?. Much of Professor Perminder Sachdev's work relates to the epidemiology of dementia and cognitive ageing. In particular, the focus is on identifying risk factors for dementia, especially those that can be modifying, in diverse communities, so that strategies can be developed to help delay the onset of dementia. The idea behind this is that if dementia can be delayed by even 1-2 years, it will lead to a significant reduction in disease burden.
Oklahoma's teacher shortage led to a record-breaking 3,780 emergency teaching certifications issued in 2022. From 2001-2018, Oklahoma's enrollment in university education programs dropped by 80%. As the state's schools struggle to fill classrooms with teachers holding standard teaching certificates, provisionally certified teachers have had to step in to fill the gap. But do students lose out when hiring traditionally certified teachers becomes a luxury this teacher-strapped state can't afford?

For many gardeners in USDA Zones 7. 8, 9 and 10, March is the month for new beginnings. The weather is warmer, trees and shrubs are blooming. But wait a minute… it's still winter. Jack Frost can still be nipping at your plants, setting back the progress of new buds, flowers and leaves. On today's Garden Basics, we have late winter and early spring frost protection tips for your new and established plants.Thinking of growing sweet potatoes? Good idea! Sweet potatoes are drought- and heat-tolerant and have few pests or diseases. Sweet potatoes are low in calories and very nutritious, a good source of beta-carotene, protein, calcium, iron, vitamins A and C and other minerals. They can be stored longer than winter squash. More commonly grown in the South and west because they require warm weather, northern regions can have success with select varieties. But for a successful crop of this warm season favorite, you need to get started now, indoors. We revisit the info you need to grow sweet potatoes. We're podcasting from Barking Dog Studios here in the beautiful Abutilon Jungle in Suburban Purgatory, it's the Garden Basics with Farmer Fred podcast, brought to you today by Smart Pots. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Rikki Quintana. For most of her adult life, Rikki has been haunted by a vivid image of a woman in a flower sack dress, sitting under a bridge with a shopping cart. That woman is the personification of Rikki's bag lady syndrome that she recently came to terms with. This fear stemmed from a chaotic childhood where Rikki couldn't rely on the adults in her life to do what was needed to take care of her. With maturity and focus, Rikki came to realize that no amount of money could cure the bag lady syndrome. It was a hypothetical problem, and not a real problem she faced. Rikki grew up in a chaotic family in which she called herself the “white sheep in a family of black sheep.” That took the form of being the rule-following perfectionist of the family with a focus on security, control, and risk avoidance. This outlook served her well as a “straight A” student and later as a lawyer, working for large prestigious law firms and their Fortune 500 clients. But eventually, after more than 30 years of practicing law, that linear focus on the standard external measures of success wasn't enough. Instead, she felt herself called to re-engage in what always spoke to her heart- international and inter-cultural relationships and communication. (She was a language major as an undergraduate, but then took the risk-averse career path to law.) Rikki founded HoonArts Fair Trade in a blind leap of faith in 2014. In retrospect, she's grateful that she didn't know what she didn't know! Starting from “ground zero” as the first person to work on building a US market for handicrafts from Tajikistan, HoonArts is now a verified fair trade business, working with artisan groups in 3 Central Asian countries. With customers on 4 continents, HoonArts is helping to empower over 100 artisans, mostly rural women. Rikki is passionate about using her long-term partnerships with master artists to open a doorway to this amazing region. In the process, she's had to completely redefine her relationship to money, risk, success, and failure. See all episodes >
