In a prior episode, I talked with Sean Kenny about so-called fourth-generation nuclear reactors. In particular, on their benefits and advantages compared to classical light-water reactors. However, we didn't talk about how companies build those new nuclear reactors. Oddly enough it is not that hard to build a light-water reactor and keep it stable. We first added nuclear reactors to the power grid in the 1950s ... without the help of a computer. Yet nowadays it is quite common for a construction time of up to 10 years. Far beyond anything reasonable in an economy of scale to make a dent in energy production and climate change. That is another point where fourth-generation nuclear reactors differ from their conventional siblings. Due to the way they work, a variety of architectures and power outputs is possible, where seemingly every startup has its own approach. One of them is Copenhagen Atomics, attempting to build a 100 MW reactor on an assembly line, and their CTO Aslak Stubsgaard, explains how they build their reactors. If you enjoyed this episode, why not recommend it to a friend?Homepage: https://www.deeptechstories.ioMusic by Nathaniel Drew x Tom Fox:https://www.nathanieldrew.com/https://tfbeats.com/This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

With climate change as the biggest threat to humanity, we're struggling to avoid or even reverse further consequences. According to the intergovernmental panel on climate change, 25% of 2010 emitted greenhouse gases come from electricity and heat production via fossil fuels as the biggest contributor. While renewable energies provide an obvious alternative, they don't come without their own downsides, such as a strong variance of power production throughout the day and seasons. Another alternative would be nuclear power. However leading to toxic waste, high expenses and possible disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima that doesn't seem to be a wise idea either. But what if there would be a form of nuclear energy, that is inherently safe, produces 100 times less waste and is much cheaper to build? So-called molten salt reactors, ideally fueled by thorium, differ strongly from well-known light water reactors. Which is why I sat down with Sean Kenny, Podcast host of Rock Logic, to explore those differences:If you enjoyed this episode, why not recommend it to a friend?Homepage: https://www.deeptechstories.ioMusic by Nathaniel Drew x Tom Fox:https://www.nathanieldrew.com/https://tfbeats.com/This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Nuclear and Renewable Energy in China

In 2020 nuclear energy created more zero-carbon energy across the world than any other source, beating out wind, solar, and hydroelectric. While the United States is retiring more nuclear plants than it's building, China is building nuclear power plants at a breakneck speed. In most situations, Sean Kenny is not a fan of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). But the speed with which they are building nuclear power plants is something to be commended. It's a very much-needed development, seeing as China is currently the number one polluter worldwide. Not only are they building a number of PWRs (pressurized water reactors), they're also developing 4th gen nuclear reactors that will generate less waste. The reason they're doing this is due to numerous environmental disasters over the past years. An estimated 30 million Chinese citizens have died due to breathing the polluted air and in some cities, the smog is so thick you can't tell what time of day it is. It's disappointing that it took hitting this point for action to be taken, but at least it is being taken. Of course, China can only mobilize in this fashion because it is an authoritarian state that cares little for individual freedoms. We don't expect the United States to be able to mobilize on this scale and we certainly don't want it to do so at the cost of individual rights. But other countries have been able to transition to mostly nuclear (France namely), so we know it is possible to get there eventually. For now, we commend China on rolling out these nuclear plants and cleaning up their skies. #china #nuclearenergy #greenenergy #zerocarbon Check out our community tab for channel updates: https://www.youtube.com/c/RockLogicWithSeanKenny/community ======================== Want an audio-only experience on the go? S2E15 - Sean Kenny | How PrepLink Plans to Transform Public Accounting

Change Your Mindset

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2018 48:47

Sean Kenny is the Co-Founder of PrepLink, a platform that allows accounting firms to work with freelance CPAs remotely, flexibly, and on demand. He is on a mission to transform the landscape of public accounting, and as you’ll hear in this episode, he is extremely passionate about this mission (and, personally, I think PrepLink is going to evolve into something very special).   Before founding PrepLink, Sean worked as a CPA for several firms in their tax departments, and the idea was born out his frustration with the lifestyle of public accounting – a frustration many of us understand all too well.   Sean realized that by providing a tool that allows accountants the option of finding remote, flexible work, he could tap into the abundance of talented and experienced CPAs willing to take on freelance assignments and open that up to firms who can benefit from a large pool of reliable on-demand experts.   “I want to offer a small firm all the resources of a large national accounting firm.” So when a small firm needs help with a specific subject matter they don’t know much about or a big project that needs more hands, they know they can find someone perfect for the job and bring them on.   PrepLink isn’t just outsourcing, though. It’s a new network for public accounting, allowing firms and professionals to establish and build relationships within the CPA community.   Sean shares an example of how he plans to use PrepLink to help him navigate the complexities of Nexus for an online business operating in multiple states:   “Right now, I have a business. I have clients all over the country. I'm actually going to have to use PrepLink to bring on people to help me understand my requirements as an internet business with all these accounting firms that I'm dealing with across the country. I need help there.”   But it's just not the accounting entrepreneurs like Sean who will benefit from this. It's tax managers or auto managers have this nagging feeling that there's to be a better way of doing things. “I'm screaming from the mountaintops,” Sean says, “if you offer flexibility, the amount of people willing to work with you will outstrip the amount of work that you have.”   Sean also stresses that you don't have to use PrepLink. “You can do it yourself. I hope this message gets across. Just offer flexibility and offer optionality, and you'll get people. You'll get amazing people.”   Resources: Learn more at preplink.ioConnect with Sean: LinkedIn | TwitterConnect with PrepLink: LinkedIn | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter  --  Change Your Mindset is produced by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices.
