Health is unlikely to be a top priority for the new GOP-led 119th Congress and President-elect Donald Trump. But it's likely to play a key supporting role, with an abortion bill already scheduled for debate in the Senate. Meanwhile, it's unclear when and how the new Congress will deal with the bipartisan bills jettisoned from the previous Congress' year-end omnibus measure — including a major deal to rein in the power of pharmacy benefit managers. In this “catch up on all the news you missed” episode, Alice Miranda Ollstein of Politico, Shefali Luthra of The 19th, and Lauren Weber of The Washington Post join KFF Health News' Julie Rovner to discuss these stories and more. Plus, for “extra credit,” the panelists suggest health policy stories they read this week that they think you should read, too: Julie Rovner: The Wall Street Journal's “UnitedHealth's Army of Doctors Helped It Collect Billions More From Medicare,” by Christopher Weaver, Anna Wilde Mathews, and Tom McGinty. Alice Miranda Ollstein: The New York Times' “Ozempic, Lego Bricks and Hearing Aids: What Trump's Greenland Plan Could Hit,” by Ana Swanson and Jenny Gross. Shefali Luthra: Vox.com's “Gigantic SUVs Are a Public Health Threat. Why Don't We Treat Them Like One?” by David Zipper. Lauren Weber: The Washington Post's “Laws Restrict U.S. Shipping of Vape Products. Many Companies Do It Anyway,” by David Ovalle and Rachel Roubein. Hosted on Acast. Building Love & Joy into Caregiving with LEGO BRICKS!  Lori La Bey talks with Loretta Woodward Veney who is an inspirational speaker and certified LEGO® Serious Play® facilitator who offers a wealth of information, encouragement, and humor to her audiences. Loretta is the author of Being My Mom's Mom, Refreshment for the Caregiver's Spirit, and Colors Flowing from My Mind. In 2006, after her beloved mother Doris was diagnosed with dementia, Loretta began learning everything she could about the disease becoming a fierce advocate for her Mom in the process. Loretta and her Mom have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The NY Times, and a PBS special. Loretta's engagement with her Mom using LEGO bricks and her facilitation of LEGO Serious Play workshops for those with dementia and their caregivers resulted in Loretta and her Mom being chosen as one of Robin Roberts Thriver Thursday recipients, which previewed on Good Morning America in November 2021. In September 2023, Loretta received a Maude Award, given to individuals and companies using innovative methods for engaging with those with dementia. Though her mom passed in January of 2022,  the legacy they created continues through Loretta's work throughout the United States. Learn: Living a life learned. Loretta shares how something her mother taught her when she was five years old has come full circle, helping Loretta and her mom find joy in the dementia journey; which has now expanded into a global movement. Consciously focusing on finding or creating joy daily. How to release anxiety, showcase creativity, and expand our ability to communicate with others to truly hear and see others on a deeper level. How it invites people to interact in group settings and builds pride, purpose, and inclusion. Going back to the basics, leveraging creativity, and an attitude all creations are perfect and tell an important story. What does a Certified Lego Serious Play facilitator do? Ovviamente no! Resources for Clinicians   Read the transcript here: 1 00:00:06,139 --> 00:00:06,480 Hi, 2 00:00:06,489 --> 00:00:07,110 everyone. 3 00:00:07,119 --> 00:00:12,170 This is Doctor Regan joining you for an episode of Autism in the Adult podcast. 4 00:00:12,489 --> 00:00:14,970 I'm the mom of a teen on the spectrum. 5 00:00:14,979 --> 00:00:17,500 I have a doctorate in neuropsychology. 6 00:00:17,700 --> 00:00:20,790 It's the field of brain behavior relationships. 7 00:00:20,909 --> 00:00:25,649 And I'm the director of an autism diagnostic clinic for adolescents, 8 00:00:25,659 --> 00:00:29,149 adults and aging adults in Central Illinois. 9 00:00:30,010 --> 00:00:30,459 Today, 10 00:00:30,469 --> 00:00:38,180 you're joining me for the fifth episode in a series about living with intention making goals, 11 00:00:38,189 --> 00:00:43,500 shifting in areas of life to get you closer to where you would like to be. 12 00:00:44,240 --> 00:00:55,540 So there were two episodes about how to choose an area of life to target and how to approach change with some specific goals and strategies. 13 00:00:56,009 --> 00:01:02,369 We had episodes about improving regulation and about communicating and connecting. 14 00:01:02,979 --> 00:01:09,629 So today we have an episode focused on household living and the culture of the household. 15 00:01:10,400 --> 00:01:10,690 Now, 16 00:01:10,699 --> 00:01:13,250 before we dive into the topic for today, 17 00:01:13,260 --> 00:01:20,519 I want to invite you to check out the resources on my website at adult in geriatric autism dot com. 18 00:01:20,959 --> 00:01:28,410 There are posts and videos for many different types of listeners and learners including clinicians. 19 00:01:29,019 --> 00:01:29,529 Also, 20 00:01:29,540 --> 00:01:31,610 you may find one of my books helpful, 21 00:01:31,620 --> 00:01:32,580 many of you know, 22 00:01:32,589 --> 00:01:39,069 that my first book called Understanding Autism in Adults and Aging Adults is in the second edition. 23 00:01:39,500 --> 00:01:40,589 And if you don't know, 24 00:01:40,599 --> 00:01:44,550 I have a second book called Understanding Autistic Behaviors, 25 00:01:44,559 --> 00:01:47,250 which is more of a workbook format. 26 00:01:47,540 --> 00:01:55,809 So it explains the neurology ... kind of the neurologic-why of some of the behavioral patterns. 27 00:01:55,819 --> 00:02:02,110 And it outlines ways to work toward increased well-being if someone's in a season of struggle. 28 00:02:04,419 --> 00:02:07,430 So let's focus on household living. 29 00:02:07,470 --> 00:02:16,449 So I want to highlight this topic because many people talk to me about the complexities of living in a household with other people. 30 00:02:16,949 --> 00:02:22,330 Most often this has to do with spouses or partners or with couples who have Children. 31 00:02:22,690 --> 00:02:27,350 Not only is the individual trying to increase their own self awareness. 32 00:02:27,360 --> 00:02:27,559 You know, 33 00:02:27,570 --> 00:02:29,050 this is how I'm wired, 34 00:02:29,059 --> 00:02:30,529 this is what makes me tick, 35 00:02:30,539 --> 00:02:31,770 this is what I need. 36 00:02:32,059 --> 00:02:33,830 But in a household, 37 00:02:33,860 --> 00:02:41,160 this is really next level awareness because there's now this demand to be aware of yourself, 38 00:02:41,169 --> 00:02:46,289 multiple other people and the interplay between all of the people. 39 00:02:46,500 --> 00:02:47,630 And on top of that, 40 00:02:47,639 --> 00:02:52,100 the needs and interplay change from day to day and from life, 41 00:02:52,110 --> 00:02:53,770 season to life season. 42 00:02:54,789 --> 00:03:00,240 It's so so easy to default to this kind of household interaction. 43 00:03:00,449 --> 00:03:02,039 Stop doing that. 44 00:03:02,050 --> 00:03:03,440 Why are you doing that? 45 00:03:03,449 --> 00:03:08,440 I've told you 100 times to X Y Z. 46 00:03:08,860 --> 00:03:09,800 Oh my gosh, 47 00:03:09,809 --> 00:03:12,440 you are so loud, 48 00:03:12,449 --> 00:03:21,630 messy clingy and guess what this focus on telling people to be different every day is just not that effective. 49 00:03:21,960 --> 00:03:27,679 And that's why we find ourselves saying the same things every day over and over. 50 00:03:27,690 --> 00:03:28,770 And not only that, 51 00:03:28,910 --> 00:03:35,339 but these repetitive interactions cause a strain on the relationships in the household. 52 00:03:35,369 --> 00:03:40,940 And they create this kind of adversarial connection rather than a partnering connection. 53 00:03:41,330 --> 00:03:50,050 So the big message is I want you to be different now rather than I want to partner with you to make things better, 54 00:03:50,110 --> 00:03:51,339 better for you, 55 00:03:51,350 --> 00:03:53,839 better for me and better for the household. 56 00:03:54,520 --> 00:04:01,009 So let's talk about some specific areas of focus and strategy that might help. 57 00:04:01,820 --> 00:04:05,509 The first thing we're gonna talk about is focus on the other. 58 00:04:05,889 --> 00:04:06,199 Now, 59 00:04:06,210 --> 00:04:07,690 during the previous episode, 60 00:04:07,699 --> 00:04:14,910 we talked about the importance of expanding our awareness from only what do I need right now, 61 00:04:14,919 --> 00:04:22,100 which actually can be difficult to figure out to what does the other person need right now. 62 00:04:22,399 --> 00:04:24,170 And when we add that element, 63 00:04:24,420 --> 00:04:28,109 we can get away from this push and pull of, 64 00:04:28,119 --> 00:04:31,769 stop doing that to oh, 65 00:04:31,779 --> 00:04:35,309 things might be able to go smoother in this area. 66 00:04:35,660 --> 00:04:42,910 I wonder what the need is that's connected with that behavior and how could I support change? 67 00:04:43,250 --> 00:04:46,109 So as we're talking about households, 68 00:04:46,119 --> 00:05:00,899 this concept of focus on the other then becomes expanded and that makes things a little more complex but also much more important and potentially really helpful, 69 00:05:00,950 --> 00:05:04,730 especially if this becomes the culture of the household, 70 00:05:04,760 --> 00:05:09,079 meaning that this is how we do things it becomes more automatic. 71 00:05:09,089 --> 00:05:13,880 It becomes something that everyone's focusing on as best they can. 72 00:05:14,980 --> 00:05:28,660 Let's imagine that a gentleman who's on the autism spectrum is also a dad and a husband and he's coming home from work after what's been a really draining and complex day, 73 00:05:29,059 --> 00:05:36,130 he's had work demands but also lots of other layers of unexpected changes in his schedule, 74 00:05:36,140 --> 00:05:38,230 detours on the route home. 75 00:05:38,600 --> 00:05:43,970 There were lots of sensory overload moments and a disagreement with a work colleague. 76 00:05:44,750 --> 00:05:51,579 So he comes home and mom who is home with three kids is not on the spectrum, 77 00:05:51,589 --> 00:05:55,070 but she does have sensory processing sensitivities, 78 00:05:55,200 --> 00:05:56,220 stickiness, 79 00:05:56,230 --> 00:05:58,529 and kids hanging on her and noise. 80 00:05:58,540 --> 00:06:02,600 And she's getting to the point that that has been really overwhelming today. 81 00:06:03,359 --> 00:06:05,149 She is home with three kids. 82 00:06:05,160 --> 00:06:21,200 A daughter who is eight has been home from school with the stomach flu but is feeling better and is now running around the house in her tutu singing and spinning and waving her magic wand around an autistic son who is 11, 83 00:06:22,160 --> 00:06:25,049 is melting down while doing his math homework. 84 00:06:25,070 --> 00:06:32,630 And another son is 15 and is playing loud music in his room with the door shut. 85 00:06:34,019 --> 00:06:35,790 So the first approach, 86 00:06:35,799 --> 00:06:41,040 the one that is our most typical go to may look like this. 87 00:06:41,549 --> 00:06:42,899 Dad walks in. 88 00:06:43,059 --> 00:06:46,480 Mom is yelling at her two youngest kids to be quiet. 89 00:06:46,660 --> 00:06:51,549 She's juggling hot food in the kitchen while trying to get food ready for dinner. 90 00:06:52,700 --> 00:06:58,130 The youngest daughter runs up to dad and wants to show off her tutu and her magic wand. 91 00:06:58,540 --> 00:07:03,549 And dad hears the loud music coming from upstairs and mom is thinking, 92 00:07:03,559 --> 00:07:06,059 thank goodness he is home. 93 00:07:06,220 --> 00:07:07,549 I need some help. 94 00:07:07,559 --> 00:07:14,130 I need some relief and dad is thinking I can't wait to get out of here and go for my bike ride. 95 00:07:16,299 --> 00:07:23,519 So mom and dad get in a fight about how he comes home and goes off by himself and she's been there all day, 96 00:07:23,529 --> 00:07:24,309 et cetera. 97 00:07:25,209 --> 00:07:28,279 So dad feels the pressure to make things right. 98 00:07:28,510 --> 00:07:30,950 He yells at his oldest son saying, 99 00:07:30,959 --> 00:07:34,070 why don't you turn off your music and come down and help your mother. 100 00:07:34,390 --> 00:07:40,850 And he yells at the middle son and says that math really isn't that hard and he should stop crying. 101 00:07:42,920 --> 00:07:55,970 We all get that right like we are at the end of our rope and we just want to make the chaos stop and calm down and we want other people to do their part. 102 00:07:58,119 --> 00:08:00,250 Let's think about a second approach. 103 00:08:01,019 --> 00:08:17,299 This is increased awareness that all of these people have really legitimate needs and a realization that there needs to be a way to figure out what they are and then to try to work together to do something. 104 00:08:19,170 --> 00:08:22,100 Mom is overwhelmed with sensory inputs. 105 00:08:22,109 --> 00:08:26,929 She's drained from the whole day of being the only adult at home, 106 00:08:27,079 --> 00:08:33,700 which means that she has been the go to person for everyone's needs in the household. 107 00:08:34,559 --> 00:08:37,588 So she needs quiet alone time. 108 00:08:37,838 --> 00:08:39,598 She needs compliments, 109 00:08:39,609 --> 00:08:41,059 she needs support. 110 00:08:41,900 --> 00:08:44,830 The youngest daughter suddenly feeling better. 111 00:08:45,239 --> 00:08:54,210 She needs to run off some of her nonsick energy and be recognized as someone who's beautiful and magical with her wand. 112 00:08:55,409 --> 00:08:59,330 The middle son has also been very drained from the day. 113 00:08:59,669 --> 00:09:06,080 He gets overwhelmed with the social and sensory environment at school and he has a math learning disability. 114 00:09:06,719 --> 00:09:17,369 So he has gone from a draining environment to a draining environment and he's doing a task that he just knows he can't have success with. 115 00:09:18,260 --> 00:09:21,840 He's unable to get his bearings to calm, 116 00:09:22,059 --> 00:09:23,469 to reenter, 117 00:09:23,479 --> 00:09:25,869 he needs some regulation help. 118 00:09:27,960 --> 00:09:39,880 The oldest son is feeling the angst of being a teen and this comes with easy irritation thinking his parents don't know anything and the loud music releases some of his irritability. 119 00:09:40,000 --> 00:09:43,450 It establishes his identity as his own person. 120 00:09:43,619 --> 00:09:46,969 So that is a lot. 121 00:09:49,590 --> 00:09:51,229 In this case, 122 00:09:51,900 --> 00:10:07,090 it often helps to have some type of planned huddle uh between the couple or with the family about what is the status right now and what do you need? 123 00:10:09,809 --> 00:10:18,659 The huddle is just a coming together to talk briefly about what are we gonna do next? 124 00:10:18,900 --> 00:10:20,820 What's going on and what are we gonna do? 125 00:10:21,979 --> 00:10:26,710 The status is really high chaos for everyone in this family right now. 126 00:10:27,979 --> 00:10:35,590 And sometimes families make up kind of humorous labels for levels of chaos or crisis. 127 00:10:35,880 --> 00:10:50,049 One family might use a color code where a code red is the most chaos or sometimes a movie related code where the most chaos is the Lord of the Rings scene where the orcs come. 128 00:10:51,070 --> 00:10:54,030 The status could also be a factual description. 129 00:10:54,190 --> 00:10:55,340 Bad day at work, 130 00:10:55,349 --> 00:10:57,619 really drained or bad day at home, 131 00:10:57,630 --> 00:10:58,539 really drained. 132 00:10:58,710 --> 00:11:02,919 And I'm at my breaking point at the highest level of chaos. 133 00:11:02,929 --> 00:11:05,309 Both mom and dad really need alone time. 134 00:11:05,669 --> 00:11:06,280 Now, 135 00:11:06,289 --> 00:11:07,820 what do the kids need? 136 00:11:08,450 --> 00:11:08,929 Well, 137 00:11:08,940 --> 00:11:11,000 you may have a quick family huddle, 138 00:11:11,320 --> 00:11:12,780 what do you need? 139 00:11:13,210 --> 00:11:21,960 Or the parents may have a sense already of what the kids would probably need to regulate and regroup. 140 00:11:22,349 --> 00:11:27,219 One helpful thing in this scenario might look like the following. 141 00:11:27,840 --> 00:11:36,130 Dad could go on his bike ride but also take the 11 year old son who's on the autism spectrum on the ride as well. 142 00:11:37,150 --> 00:11:42,070 They both really feel better after they get some pressure input, 143 00:11:42,080 --> 00:11:45,929 that's proprioceptive input and movement input, 144 00:11:45,940 --> 00:11:47,330 vestibular input. 145 00:11:47,669 --> 00:11:53,450 You can see our episode about sensory inputs for regulation. 146 00:11:54,070 --> 00:11:57,539 And this is why the bike ride is so important. 147 00:11:57,760 --> 00:12:03,200 If we tell dad not to go on the bike ride because the house is in chaos, 148 00:12:03,599 --> 00:12:07,409 he's not going to be able to regulate himself. 149 00:12:07,590 --> 00:12:09,849 So we want a dad who comes back, 150 00:12:09,859 --> 00:12:12,979 regulated centered calm. 151 00:12:13,239 --> 00:12:14,640 Um not at, 152 00:12:14,650 --> 00:12:15,890 at the breaking point. 153 00:12:16,539 --> 00:12:30,619 This bike ride also gives time for their mind to settle and it's a kind of together activity where they actually don't have to talk So it's the thing they like to do and we're together, 154 00:12:30,630 --> 00:12:36,780 but we don't have to say anything and that's very calming and regulating for them. 155 00:12:38,750 --> 00:12:40,349 Perhaps in this scenario, 156 00:12:40,359 --> 00:12:51,559 mom chooses a bubble bath with headphones and music and gives the 15 year old a task to keep him busy and to acknowledge his independence. 157 00:12:52,200 --> 00:13:01,650 So there's a small corner store about three blocks away and she gives him $15 to walk to the corner store and to take the eight year old, 158 00:13:03,049 --> 00:13:11,119 the eight year old can spin and sing and walk with her wand and he gets to choose whatever he wants for, 159 00:13:11,130 --> 00:13:13,539 quote dessert for the family. 160 00:13:14,460 --> 00:13:18,489 He chooses lots of movie candy like now and laters, 161 00:13:18,500 --> 00:13:21,059 Mike and Ike and Swedish fish. 162 00:13:21,070 --> 00:13:25,109 And he lets his sister pick out a Princess Pez dispenser. 163 00:13:25,700 --> 00:13:27,390 Then they walk home, 164 00:13:27,400 --> 00:13:29,330 mom's done with their bath. 165 00:13:29,340 --> 00:13:38,270 Dad and son are home and this is a regrouping time that acknowledges as many people's needs as possible. 166 00:13:38,609 --> 00:13:44,409 And then there can be a huddle at that point about how the rest of the night might go. 167 00:13:46,419 --> 00:13:54,750 But we at least want to problem solve when as many people as possible are more centered and less close to the breaking point. 168 00:13:57,289 --> 00:14:06,520 So this focus and strategy is uh really pinpointing what other people need people in the household. 169 00:14:06,869 --> 00:14:12,479 And it uses the huddle concept to come together and make a plan. 170 00:14:12,849 --> 00:14:14,979 So it's a quick coming together. 171 00:14:14,989 --> 00:14:16,690 It's not like a family meeting, 172 00:14:16,700 --> 00:14:18,739 where we talk through things, 173 00:14:18,859 --> 00:14:21,580 it's what's going on and what do we need to do. 174 00:14:23,190 --> 00:14:23,679 Now, 175 00:14:23,690 --> 00:14:26,760 we all know that this doesn't make everything easy, 176 00:14:26,780 --> 00:14:35,969 but it often makes things better and it creates partnerships within the household rather than really strained relationships. 177 00:14:40,070 --> 00:14:44,280 Let's look at another approach to household culture. 178 00:14:44,419 --> 00:14:51,020 So the second one is focusing on tradition and structure in order to interact, 179 00:14:52,859 --> 00:14:55,090 individuals with autistic neurology, 180 00:14:55,099 --> 00:15:04,099 often prefer structured topic based activities rather than hanging out or sharing about their day or sharing about feelings. 181 00:15:04,510 --> 00:15:10,869 These are typically more enjoyable to them than just unstructured together time. 182 00:15:12,219 --> 00:15:16,950 It might involve harnessing their knowledge about something that they love. 183 00:15:19,450 --> 00:15:25,099 And once you know who in the family really likes this kind of interaction. 184 00:15:25,109 --> 00:15:26,320 And you can say, 185 00:15:26,479 --> 00:15:29,049 I know this is what we enjoy best. 186 00:15:29,380 --> 00:15:35,059 This awareness can help increase the number of nice family memories or interactions. 187 00:15:35,380 --> 00:15:37,239 So for example, 188 00:15:37,250 --> 00:15:46,159 let's take a family um who likes to socially connect at the dinner table by sharing about their day, 189 00:15:46,380 --> 00:15:47,929 how the practice went, 190 00:15:47,940 --> 00:15:49,409 how their soccer game? 191 00:15:49,419 --> 00:15:53,669 Did uh did your friend feel good about their science project? 192 00:15:53,679 --> 00:15:56,809 How is your boss's husband doing since his surgery, 193 00:15:56,820 --> 00:15:57,510 et cetera? 194 00:15:58,900 --> 00:16:02,880 In contrast to another family with neurodiversity, 195 00:16:02,890 --> 00:16:03,359 now, 196 00:16:03,369 --> 00:16:10,299 they may prefer something more structured and less about how people felt or responded, 197 00:16:10,780 --> 00:16:14,119 less open ended or broad questions about the day. 198 00:16:14,340 --> 00:16:15,919 So what might that look like? 199 00:16:17,909 --> 00:16:25,080 This family might start a tradition at the dinner table where they each share an interesting fact that they learned that day. 200 00:16:25,159 --> 00:16:30,159 So perhaps the eight year old learned that most fish don't have eyelids. 201 00:16:30,580 --> 00:16:33,000 The 15 year old learned that on average, 202 00:16:33,010 --> 00:16:36,739 every person on earth owns 86 Lego Bricks. 203 00:16:40,210 --> 00:16:42,320 Let's look at another example. 204 00:16:42,330 --> 00:16:44,059 Let's take a spouse. 205 00:16:44,400 --> 00:16:56,059 We're looking at a woman who feels dissatisfied because her husband doesn't engage in conversations during times like car rides or while at a restaurant and waiting on their meal. 206 00:16:56,739 --> 00:17:03,609 She's realized though that they can have a really good social interaction if it's structured about a topic. 207 00:17:04,250 --> 00:17:12,939 She's also noticed that they have a good time interacting if they take online quizzes or play trivia together during these times. 208 00:17:13,660 --> 00:17:22,630 So the passenger in the car can ask the driver trivia questions and then they can switch and she notices that they really end up laughing, 209 00:17:22,640 --> 00:17:24,089 they learn new things. 210 00:17:24,099 --> 00:17:25,530 It works out well. 211 00:17:25,540 --> 00:17:28,380 It's actually a really connecting time, 212 00:17:28,689 --> 00:17:34,829 uh much better than the silence of sitting together without interacting. 213 00:17:37,680 --> 00:17:39,530 Let's take a third family. 214 00:17:39,619 --> 00:17:53,829 This family has teens and it's been struggling because the kids are a bit more moody than they were as youngsters and they're too old for some of the things that they used to do as a family when they were younger. 215 00:17:54,099 --> 00:17:54,380 You know, 216 00:17:54,390 --> 00:17:57,170 they don't like going to the zoo anymore. 217 00:17:58,119 --> 00:18:05,349 This family realized that structuring some traditions for activities has worked better than small talk. 218 00:18:05,359 --> 00:18:13,849 Like how with school they might have a Friday night tradition of board games and pizza or they might rotate, 219 00:18:13,859 --> 00:18:16,530 who gets to pick the Friday night activity. 220 00:18:16,979 --> 00:18:21,810 One teen may pick a movie and chooses the snacks next week, 221 00:18:21,819 --> 00:18:26,089 another chooses a board game and challenges kids against parents. 222 00:18:26,579 --> 00:18:31,229 And the next week mom chooses a Lock Drew mystery for the family to solve together. 223 00:18:32,780 --> 00:18:43,729 So this approach harnesses the fact that individuals with autistic neurology may really enjoy each other within the context of some structure, 224 00:18:43,739 --> 00:18:53,310 topic and activity rather than these loose connecting moments or open ended questions like how is your day and what's going on in your life. 225 00:18:56,209 --> 00:19:00,420 There's so much that goes into the culture of a household. 226 00:19:00,790 --> 00:19:18,670 But these two tips of helping people get their needs met and coming together with structure and topic focused activities can be part of what helps shift things in a good direction for many families and it really protects those partnering kinds of relationships. 227 00:19:19,989 --> 00:19:24,660 Thank you for joining me today to talk about households and families, 228 00:19:24,819 --> 00:19:27,060 protecting the wellness of our family. 229 00:19:27,069 --> 00:19:32,709 Connections can help us feel more supported and resilient overall. 230 00:19:33,530 --> 00:19:42,430 And next time we will round out this series by focusing on adding meaning and growth to areas of special interest. 231 00:19:42,619 --> 00:19:44,219 I hope you can join me then.

Per Rasmussen is currently the President and Representative Director for Millet Mountain Group, Japan. Mr. Rasmussen is originally from Denmark, and he studied Business at University of Southern Denmark. His first introduction to Japan was through his Japanese wife who was based in Denmark when they first met and his first job after graduating was with the Lego Group in the marketing side of strategic product development. After working in Denmark for 4 years, Mr. Rasmussen transferred to the Tokyo office and in Tokyo he worked in progressive marketing roles over the years with various companies. This led him to working in senior leadership roles such as Managing Director and President in recent years.   Mr. Rasmussen talks about bringing change through his work with the Danish Toy Company, The Lego Group. He says that in parents' minds education is one of the most conservative things and specifically in the Japanese market, as they do not want to take risks with their children's future. At the time in Japan, education was more closely associated with knowledge and not so much with creativity. They worked to change the product slightly and the commercials to try and market Lego to the Japanese market. He says that trying to increase sales of the products and increased revenue to the company brought about some resistance from employees. Many employees said they had joined for the stability of the organization and were not in favour of change. One of their most popular products was a large bucket full of Lego Bricks which some people thought was boring. After some tough negotiations with headquarters, they introduced The Elephant Bucket to the Japanese market. While most toys last only 3-6 months, the Elephant Bucket was so popular that it lasted on the market for 20 years.   In terms of getting engagement in Japan, making the distinction between success and failure is important in understanding success. Success is spoken of as non-failure. Mr. Rasumussen emphasizes not singling people out if a mistake is made and trying new ways, or new things in the workplace works differently in Japan. In Japanese workplaces, it is okay not to try. But if someone tries to do something, they must succeed. Thus, if someone doesn't try, that is alright with everyone, but they would prefer not trying rather than trying and failing. Japanese work culture can be seen as risk-averse in this regard. Being mindful of this when trying to bring about change can be important.   Mr. Rasmussen would advise newcomers to Japan to come with an open mind, understand that Japan works differently, and do not try to tell Japan how Japan works. He gives an example of his early years, where he would become frustrated because Japan worked at a slower pace. This pace of innovation and change was slower than he was used to. He would also advise investing the time and energy in learning Japanese only if the intention is to stay 15 or more years in Japan as it is a significant time commitment.

In this episode, we travel to Dubai and meet the world at the Expo 2020 Dubai. From cancelled Cruises and great lessons and connections from the travel world. WORLD EXPO DUBAI I am back in Dubai for the Expo 2020 Dubai. My friend Jason spoke warmly about the event, and I was convinced. If you don't remember, Jason is my Couchsurfing host from Connecticut, and he was also the main organizer of the CouchCrash I had the pleasure of attending a few years back. He told me that for the last 20 years, he attended every single World Expo. I'd heard about the event, but I booked my trip and added it to my list when I heard that it was going to be in Dubai. I've always seen Dubai as a place that strives to do everything bigger and better, so this could only be over-the-top amazing. My trip was up to a good start. After the expo, I had planned to go to Cape Town via an exciting cruise. It was an 18-day cruise from Dubai - Oman - Seychelles - Madagascar- Mauritius - 3 places in South Africa - Cape Town. However, after many changes, the organizer decided to cancel the cruise altogether. Although I was disappointed, I just had to look for an alternative and decided to spend some more time at the expo. FACTS ABOUT EXPO 2020 DUBAI Before we walk through the expo doors, let's start with some interesting hard-core facts about Expo 2020 Dubai: EXPOS have been held every five years Expos have been held every five years (more or less) across the globe since the first World Fair was held in London in 1851. Expo 2020 Dubai takes place from the beginning of October 2021 to the end of March 2022. Yes, it was postponed for a year because of the pandemic but kept the name Expo 2020 Dubai. This is an excellent fair that typically attracts more visitors than the FIFA World Cup and Olympics put together. The organizers in Dubai expected that a whopping 25 million people would visit the event despite concerns about the pandemic's impact on global travel and tourism. Expos connect minds World Expos are a global gathering of nations to find solutions to the pressing challenges of our time. Dubai won the bid in 2013, beating competition from Russia, Turkey, and Brazil with the theme ”Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.” Brand new metro station The site is located in the Dubai South area, and they even made a dedicated metro station. The station is equipped to carry as many as 44,000 passengers per hour, per direction. The station is called Expo 2020, but after the Expo's six-month run, the station will be renamed District 2020. The area of the expo is the size of 800 football fields The area of the expo was 4.4 km2 or 1.7 square miles, and that is around 800 football fields. That is a large area to walk but provides good exercise for people as they move from booth to booth. However, Expo Explorer trains were available with stops at the thematic districts. You could also rent Expo Buggies or jump on the free busses called People Movers. The expo had the world's biggest screen The ground was divided into three central thematic districts (sustainability, mobility, and opportunity). In the middle was Al Wasl Plaza. Al Wasl means “connection,” and this was Dubai's historical name. There was a huge 360-degree dome that turned into the world's largest projection surface at night. It was almost as wide as two Airbus A380s placed wing-to-wing, taller than the leaning Tower of Pisa, and it was made from 550 tons of molded steel. It also weighed as much as 25 blue whales. Under the dome, there were also live performances. A few days after my visit, Alicia Keys performed with a white grand piano. Find a video with a clip from her performance here.   AUSTRALIA PAVILLION I started exploring the different pavilions at the expo. My first stop was Australia. The Pavilion highlighted the country's diversity, ingenuity, and contribution through 60,000 years of innovation and indigenous connection to land, sea, and sky. They called it ‘Blue Sky Dreaming, ' and they aimed to condense the aspirations and achievements of their nation and harness the Australian spirit of optimism and ideas. It was spectacular and celebrated Australia embracing openness, diversity, harmony, creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration. Visitors enjoyed a series of immersive and dream-like exhibition experiences inspired by aspects of the Australian landscape, culture, and invention.   MEETING THE WHOLE WORLD One hundred ninety-two countries were represented at the expo. Therefore, it felt as you could meet the whole world at Expo 2020 Dubai. And in that sense, it's the biggest Expo ever. But my friend Jason told me that this one seemed less visited than other expos. I can only imagine how big the expo was in previous years. He mentioned that previously, you had to wait for 45-minutes to get to each pavilion, and here it only happened a few times in peak hours. VISITING MY HOME COUNTRY'S PAVILION Next to the big Australia Pavilion, there was a smaller country, Denmark. Of course (as a proud Dane), I had to check that out. Just outside the booth, I found a stand selling typical Danish hotdogs, which tasted different from how they do at home. I was there with Kim, an American friend, and I persuaded her to try one. Kim and I sat at a table outside the pavilion right next to a Viking Ship made out of LEGO Bricks (of course). There was also a Troll that you may know from the DreamWorks movies. “Trolls…?” Yes, they are also Danish. Inside there was a small shop with some typical Danish design products and furniture. It was good to taste typical Danish Lakrids by Bülow (delicious Chocolate Liquorice). There was also a small exhibition from Maersk, one of the world's biggest container shipping companies. Upstairs, we found a rooftop bar and restaurant showcasing delicious cuisine and drinks like Carlsberg beer from Denmark. Here is a fun fact about my country.  Denmark is officially one of the happiest countries in the world. The Danish flag dates back to 1219 and is the first flag to be acknowledged, and no matter where you are in Denmark, you'll never be more than 52 km from the ocean. The rooftop restaurant is run by “Restaurant De 2 Have” – in English, that means Restaurant “The Two Oceans”. Usually, they are found at the very top of Denmark in Skagen, where the two oceans (Skagerak & Kattegat) meet. I left my “home,” and as I was passing the El Salvador Pavilion, I caught a glimpse of the biggest and maybe most impressive pavilion of them all, the UAE pavilion. I did not expect them not to show out, and it was shaped like a falcon in flight and looked phenomenal from the outside. CAMPUS GERMANY The German Pavilion was designed as a center of knowledge, research, and human interaction. It resembled a university, and therefore, they branded it as “Campus Germany.” As I was going through the building, there were many interactive things to do. As visitors, we got an entertaining, surprising, hands-on digital experience as we discussed global warming, sustainability, and innovation. It was different, interactive, and memorable. Check out this video about the German Pavilion. https://youtu.be/rw1-ViUaCc0 Expo 2022 showcased the newest inventions, and the German Pavilion excelled in this. For me, there were three big WOW items. First, seeing their whole glass building go dark to light for energy efficiency. Secondly, they had an elevator that went sideways, and lastly, they had a personal-sized and computer-driven plane. I managed to have a word with Annika Belisle (Head of Communication at Campus Germany): “The idea was to take people on an education-based journey. We want the visitor to feel like they are in a university. They enroll and go through thematic areas, and they end up in a graduation hall. Throughout their journey, they have an opportunity to learn about sustainability, innovation, and ideas from Germany.” WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MARCH One of the most exciting places that I visited was a big building and exhibition called the Sustainability Pavilion. It had more than 1,000 solar panels on 18 so-called “energy trees” that captured energy from the sun. This helps generate more than 4-gigawatt hours of alternative energy per year, which is enough to charge more than 900,000 mobile phones. Another exciting thing to see was the Mobility Pavilion that included the world's largest passenger lift that could carry more than 160 people at a time. The Dubai Exhibition Centre, a gigantic conference zone for exhibitions, dinners, and concerts, was equally impressive. The center can be divided into nine halls that can host between 300 to 20,000 people. Yes, everything is just bigger in Dubai. As I looked at all these impressive buildings, I couldn't help but think about what will happen to this space after the expo is over in March 2022. I learned that they would not tear everything down, and few of them will even stay on as permanent exhibitions. The Sustainability Pavilion, Mobility pavilions, Al Wasl Plaza, and the Dubai Exhibition Centre will remain after the Expo ends. What happens to the other parts? Some of the buildings might be converted into office spaces, and some might be taken down. But there will be a whole new district that will come to life next October. A smart, future-ready city called ‘District 2020'. The sustainability and the energy-saving are at the heart of the concerns of this exhibition. 90% of the material used during the construction process will be reused or repurposed to build public buildings. These actions are targeted to decrease the carbon footprint, water, and energy consumption. JAPAN PAVILION I've saved one of the best ones, the Japan Pavilion, for last! Before we went inside, I was given a bespoke smartphone that would keep track of what I showed interest in when I was in the building. I could hear different sound effects with headphones depending on where I was in the room. At various times, I would be given a choice to go through different doors. For example, when four doors suddenly appear and the question “what's your favorite season of the year?” popped up, I chose “Summer”. That choice customized my visit and showed up later on a screen. The final round room had video projection all around. In front of me, there was specific info that the smartphone around my neck had collected. We were asked to run around, and then the space was filled with extraordinary, ultra-fine mist that helped visualize three-dimensional art. This was an immersive experience that played on all senses. When I came out (with my head still spinning), I was greeted by Aiko Ikeno, Secretary-General from the Japan Pavilion. “We are very happy that this was an immersive experience. The whole story is that we are different; we can all make a better world. In the end, we are living in the same world although we have different choices. This whole experience shows you that you are thoughtful and can contribute to a better world. If we work together, we can combine our varied ideas and innovate. In Japan, we have a long history and culture that we want to share. We share a bit of Japan in this whole experience. We have a distinct identity in Japan, and we hoped to showcase that. NEXT STOP: JAPAN The next World Expo is in 2025 in Osaka, Japan, and the focus for that Expo will be designing a future society. I spent four days at Expo 2020 and only saw a fraction of everything that was on display. I'm actually glad that the cruise got cancelled. If that hadn't happened, I would have seen even less. Now I'm fully sold on going to Osaka in Japan for Expo 2025. And I plan to spend at least a week there. Remember to see the pictures of this event on TheRadioVagabond.com, and also, you should watch a YouTube videofrom one of my favourited YouTubers, Lost Leblanc. I've also linked to that in the note section in your podcast listening app. I hope you liked this episode and if you did, please share it with someone you know that might be interested in a World Expo. LETTER FROM A LISTENER This week, I have a message from “Down Under”. I got this one from Nikki in Sydney via Instagram: Hi Palle, I just listened to your podcast this week. I've been following your journey for the last year – a lot of that time I've been in lockdown in Sydney, so it's been a breath of fresh air to hear your stories of travel and adventure. And so inspiring – giving me the confidence to make a plan. The end of this year when my youngest child goes off to university, I'm working on making all my work remote, so my husband and I can travel. I wanted to say thanks – keep doing what you are doing! Also, I really hope to meet you one day out there! Nikki Hi Nikki Thanks – and that sounds like you're about to do what I did in 2016. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the transition to becoming more or less nomadic. Good luck – and yes, maybe we'll meet somewhere in the world.

Building a Better Cannabis Facility Like Lego Bricks

Cannabis Equipment News

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2021 49:10

This week, Tim Vrieling and David Wolf, founders of Greenbox Builders, discuss how their pre-engineered, pre-designed and pre-specified facilities can get cannabis operators up and running faster by cutting out 85% of the design and development time. In June, Vrieling and Wolf founded Greenbox to solve a common problem in the cannabis industry: facility construction. The pair had experience building in technical environments, working on everything from medical device and pharmaceutical labs to test kitchens and science buildings at universities. Recently, Vrieling experienced an uptick in interest from cannabis businesses at Integrate Lab Builders Inc., an architectural design firm that he has run for the better part of five years in Southern California. He found that the design and build process in the cannabis industry was taking much longer than other markets for myriad reasons. For example, municipalities were making it more difficult to get plans approved for conditional use permits or receive building permits. The requirements are more challenging, so Vrieling and Wolf came up with an idea to pre-package structures with a complete set of plans that are already engineered — with drawings completed and typical code issues addressed. On average, Vrieling says that it could take nine months from when a cannabis operator starts with a municipality to when construction could begin. With his new process, he says clients could be in front of the planning commission within 45 days.Greenbox builds pre-engineered, pre-designed and pre-specified Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facilities made of insulated concrete form structures. The company's initial offering includes 3,360-square-foot and 4,500-square-foot analytical and extraction labs. According to Wolf, the structures are formed much like building a facility out of Lego bricks. Eventually, the company hopes to offer cultivation facilities and edibles kitchens as well.According to Vrieling, the value of the system lies in taking months, or even years, off the timeline to get facilities up and operational. Startup cannabis companies often fail to get off the ground because of time lost during construction that quickly eats into startup capital. Vrieling said the downtime is usually more costly than the entire facility, and the lost opportunities and business can be devastating. New customers have previously come to the company in the middle of the process looking for help retrofitting an old facility. Although they take on that work, Vrieling said the value is building a new facility from the ground up, so clients can avoid the many pitfalls between cities and retrofit projects. While municipalities can cause hiccups during the process, the demands for the structure are similar to those in other industries: control over cross-contamination, adulteration, and odor controls, among others. The builders stressed the importance of keeping it simple. Timeliness is critical, so they cut out as much of the design process as possible. The buildings are about 85% complete before the project begins, and then each is tweaked to suit individual municipalities and climates. Although the company is new, Wolf and Vrieling have one new structure under contract in Oklahoma and are currently negotiating with two other cannabis companies in the U.S. The company started with analytics testing and extraction facilities because they found a significant disconnect between the number of growing and processing facilities in the U.S. compared to the number of testing facilities.  The company is green in more than just the name, but the staff of savvy architectural veterans hope to set it up for success in the fast-paced cannabis industry.

At first, I was afraid. Women would claim that childbirth is the most painful experience of their lives - until 3 years later, they step on a Lego brick. My wife told me to stop acting like a flamingo, so I had to put my foot down. It only takes me 10 minutes to walk to the pub, but 15 minutes to walk back. The difference is staggering. My wife and I have decided that we don't want children. If anyone out there does, we can drop them off tomorrow morning. Conjunctivitis.com - now that's a site for sore eyes.

Fox has struck a deal that will allow the streaming service Tubi to stream the UK and Australian LEGO Masters seasons. 2. His name is carl. I spoke of him on the Charity Tourist Podcast, as he participated in the ride for tots the marine corp toys for tots program. So we met for lunch in Hawaii Kai at the Kona Brewing company. There we chatted. He is an experience and successful business owner and fan of the Ohio State buckeyes so we had a lot to talk about. I was seeking advise on business and input for moving forward. 1st We talked about my 4 Buckeyes comic strip and side project, told him about a few obstacles in finishing the book. He encouraged me to do a pre-order sale of my 4 Buckeyes Book “The Story of OHIO” reassuring me that its better to try and fail than having not tried at all. Well I plan on doing just that and i will alert you to it when i do.   2rd we discussed the show you are listening to now. Hawaii Posts. He made some suggestions about how to target my audience better and gave a few suggestions that would switch up a few things on the show. For instance he suggested that i focus on the events and put the weather and surf at the tail end.   Shoots I guess i will give it a try.   Now Carl is headed into open heart surgery this week and i ask that we keep Carl in our thoughts and prays as he recovers. Good Luck Carl…God Bless you with a successful surgery and speedy recovery.   Life is not a Rehearsal.  That’s on the Marque outside a theater pictured on The Verve’s Single by the same name. Life is not a Rehearsal. for real. I remind my son of that all the time to embrace life, prepare for tomorrow but live for today. Tell the people you love that you love them.    The Friday after lunch with carl i got a text from my friend David, i went to preschool - college with him and swam on the same team for years with his brother Frank and Doug. Well Davids father passed away. He was a accomplished obstetrician. Think of how many people he helped to bring into this world.  He was always pool side at swim meets. Sunday I got another text message from another friend Kenny. He informed me that his father had font be with the lord. His father was a Good kind hearted man who was active as a coach on soccer teams or an adult leader in the scouts. I Let Kenny know as i did with David that i was there for them if they wanted to call and talk. Being in Hawaii and them 3000 miles from here on the mainland i knew i couldn’t be there for either of them in there time of need.   Monday Morning I am driving a client to the airport when my friend Todd here on the islands sent a text that simply said “Steve Passed Away Man” I dropped off and replied No … Aw man Todd replied “yeah for real like wtf”   Steve Kanemori passed away. 47 years old. It was hard for me to process.  Steve is a local braddah who was larger than life, a friend, a business partner, God father to my Children and Uncle to many many kids.   I moved out here to by encouragement by a good friend, Josh who moved here after leaving Ohio State. He said to me on the phone, “if you wanna surf and make surf films this is the place to be.” referring to Hawaii. When i moved out here I had $400 cash a near maxed credit card, my bike camera equipment and a duffle bag. Thinking was going to market my brand “Trippin Everywear” by shooting movies with surfer skaters and mountain bikers wearing my brand.  Big Dreams small budget, I was broke in a week. I quickly got a videographer job at the wedding emporium where i met Steve and Todd. That was 21 years ago. During that time i lived in Kuliouou Valley with Josh and friends and coincidently that was the valley Steve grew up in so we hung out there and also in kaimuki as i eventually moved closer to work. But then I moved to the North Shore making surf films, Steve stayed in Waikiki and killed it in the wedding video business. He was the best. A mast shot, good with customers and totally dedicated to providing the best possible wedding video. He would shoot 2 maybe 4 in a day and edit most before the next day. In 2004 i moved to Waikiki and set up an office with Steve. He did weddings and Corporate video and i plugged away at sports and adventure videos. When Steve Jobs introduced the Video iPod in 2005 and asked for Video Podcasters. Steve and I came up with the name Hawaii Surf Session Report. He believed in all of my hare-brained ideas and knew how to rib me about my over zealous ambition. After about 7 years together making videos separately and together we eventually closed offices.   We stayed in touch and started meeting at the salt flats in Maunalua bay, its a parking lot for boats and trailers and cars and whatnot. We called it the docks…. there really were no docks…. but there is a boat ramp. Anyhow.    Almost 3 nights a week for the last 10 years we would meet at the docks with Todd, Trevor, Jay, Brian, Shawn M, Shawn P and family and friends and old friends and we welcomed new friends as they traveled through the islands.  W drank beer talk story laugh, rant, encourage, play clash and the kids like Jimmy and Crimson would run around chasing crabs on the beach, light saber wars or gamed the night away under the stars. Steve was alway there. At the dock or even at times of need Steve was there for you. He would be a good uncle to Crim and Jim and talk to them about acting up at home or school and say “boy you better get good grades “ Eventually my youngest Tommy, got to go to the docks. He would give uncle Steve a high five and a big hug when we left . He thought coming out to the docks and seeing tod and uncle Steve was really special.   Jimmy Really loved uncle Steve. First fist bump and local handshake always went to uncle Steve. Jimmy would sit in his lap and as he got bigger uncle Steve would joke that he’s gonna have to settle for the fist bump. But Jimmy always gave him a big hug before we parted ways. As we would drive down the Kalani Steve and Jimmy would exchange shakers through the car windows. It was a big thing. He was a big friend and meant so much to so many people. And now he is gone. That fast. here one day gone the next.   The last night i saw him we talked about this podcast and my book and the chauffeur job. He was going to be working with me as a chauffeur.  we were stoked to be working together again. Even though he still encouraged me to pursue my creative interest. I excitedly told him about an email i got from a website that does travel reviews and they listened to the show and contacted me offering content. I told him i started clearing out my storage unit and found all of my cd from the Surf Session report days, explaining i have rights to all of that music and now i can play that music on the Hawaii Posts. Started dreaming of bringing back Surf Session report for version 2020. Even remarked on how much i wish we could get an office space together…. like the old days.   He said “ I never really saw you happier than when you were in the office after coming back from shooting surf and still had to edit but your were happy and stoked you were following your dream and it was working, you gotta believe in yourself. You gotta focus on one thing. You can do it.” I remember saying “ Shoots brother Steve you always believe in me”   The night of his passing all of his friends gathered at the docks to celebrate his life. As tradition in Hawaii memorials are made with all sorts of flowers and candles. So we lit some candles opened a beer for Steve. The kids made a R.I.P Steve K with white coral on the sand lot. Todd changed it to R.I.L. as in rest in love, 11 days later the memorial still stand at the docks. His mother will spread his ashes there and We plan on placing a plaque and a coconut tree in honor of braddah Steve.   Years ago i made a 3 part series called Fieldtripp Hawaii and Steve was my partner and camera guy. In the episode you will catch a glimpse of Steve. Its a fun episode about the Shaka….. so hang loose braddah Fieldtripp Hawaii https://youtu.be/TcC6YKxr2y0 Bradded Noland- "Big Ships" https://youtu.be/Ge-BXhOYFPA  HiP EVENTS SHOW 021 s2e7 june 7 - 13   Events Calendar brought to you by   Tiki’s Grill & Bar 2570 Kalakaua Ave, Waikiki, Hawaii www.tiki'sgrill.com Tiki's Grill & Bar is Waikiki's locally owned and operated independent restaurant destination. 2018 has been a good year for ridiculous, gargantuan LEGO builds. Just weeks ago, there was that life size, driveable LEGO Bugatti. Now someone has gone and built a mega-sized recreation of Apple's new Cupertino “spaceship” campus – otherwise known as Apple Park. Coming in at roughly 85,000 pieces, the build took designer Spencer_R a little over two years to complete, with many of those hours spent poring over drone footage of the campus' construction. At 6.8×4.

Session 22 What are the different types of MMI stations that you can encounter on your medical school interview day? The MMI stands for the Multiple Mini Interview. This format is has been spreading like wildfire throughout the U.S. and Canadian medical schools. The MMI has different types of stations. First off, did you know that our episodes in this podcast are recordings of our Facebook Live that we do at 3pm Eastern on most weekdays? Check out our Facebook page and like the page to be notified. Also, listen to our other podcasts on MedEd Media. If you’re interested in learning about different specialties, check out SpecialtyStories.com. [00:58] The First Two Types The Scenario Stations - You can walk into the station and read the scenario. It's usually something moral, ethical, or something where you have to communicate something to an interviewer. Another similar type of station is where you'd be talking with an actor, who poses as a patient. The patient has issues and then you need to go in and discuss with the patient. You tell them they have cancer or you go in and discuss with an angry patient to calm them down. The above two are both similar, but one is acting-based while the other involves discussing your thought processes with the interviewer. [02:15] The Third Type The third type of scenario is a very standard interview question. You encounter questions like why you want to be a physician. Or you're asked of a difficult time in your life. Or they could ask you why you want to go to this school. A lot of MMIs have this kind of station. "As you're preparing for the MMI, you still need to prepare for the standard interview questions as well." [03:05] The Fourth Type This is the "teamwork" station where you're working together with another student. You'd walk in and you’re given a piece of paper. You'd have to describe it to the other student who hasn't seen it or describe the picture on it. You may be reading out instructions for the other person to do it. This is to see how well how you can communicate and work together as a team. The Lego Bricks is another popular type of station where instead of you seeing a piece of paper with a drawing on it, it's you seeing a completed Lego brick structure. Then you'd have to explain to your team mate how to put the Lego bricks together. Links: MedEd Media Medical School HQ Facebook page SpecialtyStories.com

#12 - Great Gifts for Middle Grade Readers

Books Between Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 4, 2016 25:28

Intro   Hi and welcome to Books Between - a podcast for teachers, parents, librarians, and anyone who wants to connect middle grade kids between 8-12 to books they’ll love.  I’m your host, Corrina Allen - a teacher, a mom of two, battling a sore throat, but excited that I finally got to see the Fantastic Beasts movie last weekend! I gotta say - Jacob & Queenie were the best part for me.   This is Episode #12 and today we’re talking about gift ideas for middle grade readers, three novels with incredibly brave protagonists, and I’ll answer a listener’s question about keeping kids engaged when you read out loud.   Main Topic - Gifts Ideas for Middle Grade Readers   December is here and for many, December brings holidays that involve gift-giving. So if you have a child between the ages of about 8 and 12 on your list this year, I have some bookish ideas for you.   My first suggestion is, whenever possible, ask the child what they’d like that would be book related. And gift cards to local bookstores are always perfect as well so they can pick something they will love themselves. A friend of mine follows the philosophy of limiting holiday gifts to four categories: Want, Need, Wear, and Read. He gives each of his children a piece of paper divided into four sections and they list some items they want, some things they really need, some ideas of what they’d like to wear, and a list of things they want to read. Want, Need, Wear, Read. I really like that idea of giving children a focus, and of course the emphasis it places on reading.   But - if you’re not sure what books they’d like or you want to surprise them, here are four suggestions for you.   #1 - Try a biography that is connected to their hobbies or interests. For example, if they like art, you could get them the Who Was Frida Kahlo? Biography. (I haven’t read that one myself, but if my daughter sneak reading it under her blankets with a flashlight is any recommendation for you - it seems pretty good!)  If they are into sports, a really great collection of real-life stories is Rising Above: How 11 Athletes Overcame Challenges in Their Youth to Become Stars. If you have a young dancer if your life, definitely get them the new Misty Copeland biography called Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina. That one is brand new and out December 6th.  For the science-loving tweens and teens on your list, Phineas Gage: A Gruesome but True Story About Brain Science is awesome! Who can resist a book with “gruesome” in the title?   #2 - Build on a book they already like. For example, you could get a Diary of a Wimpy Kid calendar or one of the many fantastic Harry Potter coloring books. My girls loved those when we were listening to the audio books.  You can also get their favorite book as a charm to put on a bracelet or necklace. I’ll link to that Etsy shop in the show notes. Another idea is to get them the audio version of a favorite book so they can experience the performance of that story. And hey - maybe even get them their own Audible account.   #3 - Pair a book with another gift so you build on the excitement. What I mean by that is if you give your nephew a LEGO kit, also get him the bold and colorful book 365 Things to Do with LEGO Bricks. If you get your daughter a science kit, include a biography of Marie Curie as some inspiration. You might pair an apron and set of cookie cutters with Cooking Class: 57 Fun Recipes Kids Will Love to Make (and Eat!). If you are getting your child a telescope, maybe add a copy of The Everything Kids’ Astronomy Book. A hot gift for my 9 year old lately are those fashion kits where she can make her own headbands and bracelets - you know, the stuff that leaves beads scattered all over your house! But - a great book to pair with a present like that is The Fashion Book by DK Publishing. It connects historical trends with modern fashion - it’s pretty cool. That’s one of those books that I want to buy for my kids so I can read it, too.   #4 - Get them a Mail Order Mystery. Now - I want to say upfront that I have no connection to this company. They are not paying me. I simply saw their ad online, got it for my girls as something fun to do over the summer, and it was great. Every week for about six weeks, my daughters got personalized wax-sealed letters describing the mystery they had to solve, artifacts connected to the story, riddles, and a code to crack that my whole family was working on together. It was so much fun - for all of us! The final package included a book that tied everything together.  And if you have more than one child - no worries - they can share it and work together and the company will include all their names on the personalized items. So here’s how it works. You go to MailOrderMystery.com and pick one of three mystery options. The first two are Treasure Hunt (which is a pirate adventure) and The Enchanted Slumber (which is the mystery we did and it was fairy tale themed). The new mystery, which was revealed in their newsletter last week is called Spies, Lies, and Serious Badguys and will feature a secret safe disguised as a book, a personalized secret agent ID card, invisible ink pen, and so much other cool stuff. So after you’ve decided which of those three mysteries you want, you pick who it’s for, and then you get to decide when it will start.  Also - if you are sometimes a last-minute shopper, this is a perfect quick gift. You just sign up online, print out a cool looking certificate to tuck in a card or roll up into a cool scroll, and BAM - awesome gift.   It’s really tailor made for kids between 8 and 12.   I hope you’ve gotten some fresh ideas for any middle grade reader on your list this year. And I would love to get your ideas and share them with everyone else!  You can tag me on Twitter or Instagram or email me at booksbetween@gmail.com and I’ll share your ideas, too!     Book Talk - Three Books Featuring Brave Girls   In this part of the show, I share with you three books centered around a theme and discuss three things to love about each book. This week I’m featuring three books with courageous female leads: Finding Perfect, Sticks & Stones, and Rain Reign.     Finding Perfect   The first book this week is one that I have been wanting to share with you since  - jeesh, I think June! Finding Perfect is by debut author Elly Schwartz. And actually, I should clarify that - this is Schwartz’s first published novel but not the first she’s written. This novel doesn’t read like a first effort - it’s crafted like a novelist at the top of their game. Okay - I could keep gushing, but you probably want to know what the book is about. So a quick summary. Finding Perfect is about 12-year-old Molly Nathans who is always striving toward perfect. Perfectly sharpened pencils, perfectly crisp white paper, perfectly aligned glass figurines, and a perfectly safe and together family. And that last wish for family perfection is the one that seems to set her on a downward path when her Mom moves out and Molly spirals into her OCD.  So here are three things to love about Finding Perfect:   Poetry  - Molly is a poet and one element of her story is how she participates in her middle school’s Poetry Slam Contest. She gets past the first round with an incredible poem that starts with the word “Sorry.” And as Molly’s compulsions toward organization and neatness start to take over her life and she feels herself unraveling - her writing starts to reflect that. It’s so powerful. Here’s a line from one of her poems: “As time slips, it’s hard to hide  To keep my crazy tucked inside.”   Molly’s friends Hannah and Bridgett. Hannah is her best friend, cheering Molly on and waiting for her when Molly spends hours rearranging her room instead of meeting up like she promised. And Bridgette, who often says the wrong thing and is obsessed with obituaries. But - oh, when Molly finds out WHY Bridgette collects obituaries, she realizes that every person has something hidden. The thing is though that Hannah and Bridgette do NOT like each other.  And this book really captures that difficult dynamic when you have friends anchored to the same person and they have to find a way to get along. Finding Perfect fills an incredibly important niche in middle grade fiction. A book that tackles anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder from the point of view of a kid. I love that this book is written in first person and we get to experience Molly’s challenges and dilemmas. She wants to be a good friend and go help Hannah with her bracelet business plan. But… she is compelled to straighten up her bedroom first - which starts to take longer and longer and longer until finally Molly does the brave thing and admits to herself that it’s a problem. I am not sure if the statistics really bear this out, but it does seem to me that I have more and more students every year who are trying to overcome some level of either anxiety or compulsion. This book would be perfect in their hands - and for anyone else who could use a look into another child’s experience to help them understand each other better.   Finding Perfect reminded me a bit of Raymie Nightingale and I have to give a shout out to the cover design. It is simply perfect - and has the BEST spine design I have ever seen.   Sticks & Stones   Book number two this week is Sticks & Stones by Abby Cooper - another debut author who seems like she’s been around forever. This is the story of middle schooler, Elyse, who has this very unusual condition where the words that people say about her appear on her skin. It’s called, well, I can’t pronounce it - and honestly I don’t think Elyse can either. But it’s shortened, mercifully, to CAV. Now, I will say at first that the rational, scientific side of my brain had a hard time suspending disbelief about verbalized words getting etched into skin. BUT. Once I could shush that side, I just fell in love with this story and with Elyse. So, the main character has this condition, she’s starting middle school, her friendships are shifting (like they do in middle school), and with the encouragement from an anonymous person writing her mysterious notes, Elyse decides to be brave and go for this elite position in her school called Explorer Leader. And in the midst of all this, her disorder takes a turn and it’s not just others’ words that are etched into her skin, but her own thoughts about herself start to appear on her arms and legs. How powerfully symbolic is that?   So, if you’re not sold already, here are three more reasons to love Sticks & Stones:   Elyse’s notes to herself. Every month as part of an English assignment, she writes a letter to her future self in her journal. In her first September note, she jots down four goals. Which are: Stop thinking about the folded paper until I can finally open it after class. Stop obsessing over Liam, because he is done liking me. Instead, obsess over boys like Nice Andy who do seem to like me. Stop thinking about the folded blue paper until it’s time to open it!   In each letter, Elyse reflects on how things are going and lists some new goals. I really loved how those letters anchored the story.   The boy she calls “Nice Andy”. Because - there is a point in the book where he could have been not-so-nice. Now - I’m going to give a small spoiler here, which I try not to do - but this one isn’t so major. But, if you’d rather not hear it, just pause and fast forward about a minute. Okay? Alright, so - Elyse ends up dating Nice Andy for awhile. And he IS wonderful, but she realizes she just doesn’t feel THAT way about him. And I simply LOVED how he handles things when she tells him that she would rather be good friends. He says, “Oh! Okay, don’t worry about it.”  That could have gone very differently. I think kids could use a model of a graceful and respectful breakup, so thumbs up for that scene! I really love how Sticks & Stones embodies this idea that having a bigger purpose in your life and striving for something important can break you out of self-doubt and worrying so much about yourself. For Elyse, it’s her goal of becoming Explorer Leader that starts to get her out of her own head a bit. And ironically, by getting busy and NOT thinking so much of what others are saying about her, she becomes more confident. In one of the later mystery notes that Elyse receives is this advice:   “Remember, someone is always going to have something bad to say. But can you remember the good you’ve done? The good you ARE?”   I think that message is so important for middle grade readers who are sometimes focused so much on other people liking them. I remember those years myself - they were rough.   Sticks & Stones is about friendship, and boys, and learning what actions to take to be more comfortable with yourself. This book would be particularly powerful for middle grade girls.   Rain Reign   Our final featured book this week is Ann M. Martin’s Rain Reign. For the last two years, I don’t think there’s been a month that’s gone by where I haven’t been conferencing with a student who has been reading this book or reading it out loud to my daughters. One of the joys of being a teacher is getting to dip back into those favorite books. So, Rain Reign is a story told by 5th grader Rose Howard, who loves routines, collecting homonyms, and prime numbers. She lives with her dad, who is not the best care-taker for her. And she lives with her dog, who she calls Rain. And, in her own words says “My official diagnosis is high-functioning autism, which some people call Asperger’s syndrome”. One night, after a hurricane has caused flooding and destruction, Rose’s father lets Rain outside and now she’s missing. Because of that, Rose has to be brave, break out of her routine, and try to find her dog. And that’s just the beginning of her bravery. Alright, so - here are three fantastic things about Rain Reign. Rose’s straightforward storytelling. It’s astonishing how well we get into Rose’s head. For example, in the first chapter she says: “This is how you tell a story: First you introduce the main character. I’m writing this story about me, so I am the main character.”  And later on she says,   “ Some of the things I get teased about are following the rules and always talking about homonyms. Mrs. Leibler is my aide and she sits with me in Mrs. Kushel’s room. She sits in an adult-size chair next to my fifth-grade-size chair and rests her hand on my arm when I blurt something out in the middle of math. Or, if I whap myself in the head and start to cry, she’ll say, ‘Rose, do you need to step into the hall for a moment?’”   I think most people who have spent any kind of time in a school will find that scene very familiar. Having it told from the point of view of the child with autism is so important.   Rose’s Uncle.  While Rose is very unlikely in who she ended up with as a father, she lucked out with her Uncle Weldon. It’s hard to believe that the two of them are brothers. Rose’s dad is impatient, an alcoholic, neglectful, and… worse. Thank goodness Rose has her Uncle who picks her up from school, patiently answers her many repetitive questions, and helps her deal with her dad. How much kids simply love this book.  In fact, I decided that since I just happen to have two of those kids on hand right here in our house, I’d invite them to tell you what they liked about Rain Reign.     Q & A Our third and final segment this week is Question & Answer time.   Question: Today’s question is from Sarah in Arlington, Texas.( And Hey Sarah - thanks for listening!) She asks, “My kids don't seem like they’re paying attention when I read aloud. How can keep them more interested?”   Answer: First of all, I hear ya! Between my own kids and “kids” at school - I feel like I am always assessing their attention and interest.  So I have a few thoughts, and hopefully you, listening, might chime in as well. First, I’m wondering - did your kids get to pick out the book? If they have some say, that can help. At home, I usually book talk a few that I think would be winners and then let them decide. I do understand that with more than one child, that choosing process can be tricky. We’ve certainly had some drama and high stakes negotiations about that at my house. A second thought - give them something to do with their hands while they’re listening. I have adult friends who just can’t sit still for that long. So try giving them some paper and crayons or play-doh. Maybe tinkering with LEGO’s or doing a  jigsaw puzzle. And finally - there is the possibility that they might be paying more attention than you think. I had this epiphany last year when I was reading aloud Matilda to my girls. And one of my daughters was driving me nuts because she was bouncing all over the bed, the book is shaking, she’s twisting around in the blankets - I could not get her to settle down.  And I am getting annoyed - this is supposed to be our calm, mother-daughter time bonding over classic children’s literature. NO. So after a few nights of me getting mad, I thought, “Okay - I’m just going to ignore it and she’ll stop. Right?’” So I continue to read, but I’ve got one eye on her the entire time. And then suddenly it hit me - she was acting out what was happening in the book. She was SO involved in the book that she was physically experiencing it.   SO I know sometimes that we have this idealized image in our mind of our loving children nestled in our lap, taking in every word of what we’re reading, but - truthfully that doesn’t always happen that way. The main thing is to not give up on that daily read aloud time.   Closing   Alright, that’s it for the Q&A section this week. If you have a question about how to connect kids between 8-12 to books they’ll love or an idea about a topic we should cover, I really would love to hear from you.
