There's no doubt the news that the number of people on a benefit in New Zealand is up to the 400,000 mark will have some people tut-tutting. But before we start ripping into the so-called “benefit bludgers”, we need to be very careful. Because at the same time that we're finding out that benefit numbers are up —and the number of people on the dole in particular— 10% compared to last year, we're also hearing about people over-50 being knocked back time-and-time again when all they're doing is just trying to find work. So the number of people on the Jobseeker benefit is up right around the country. The biggest increase has been in Northland but overall, there are 216,000 people on the dole. Which is just over half the overall number of beneficiaries. That's with 81,000 people off a benefit and into work thanks to moves made by the Government, which had former WINZ boss Christine Rankin all excited when she was on Newstalk ZB this morning. Social Development Minister Louise Upston also said this morning that thousands of jobs are on the way with the big infrastructure projects in the pipeline. Which is all very well, but not everyone works in construction. And the prospect of these big projects coming online won't provide any reassurance to the over-50s who are over the hill in the eyes of many employers. Which is why we shouldn't make assumptions that everyone on the Jobseeker benefit is not in the least bit interested in working. Because there are plenty of people —thousands of people we're being told today— who desperately want to work but can't because of their age. Or, more to the point, they desperately want to work but can't because some employers are only interested in hiring younger people. The founder of a website for people over-50 seeking work has been saying this week that thousands of people have contacted them with stories of being sidelined just because of their age. Ian Fraser is the founder of the Seniors at Work website, and he says employers need to change their thinking about these so-called older workers. For example, he says not everyone over-50 struggles with technology. He says that excuse comes up all the time. Not that that's what comes through in the rejection letter – if you do get a rejection letter. Then there's the old line about being over-qualified. But we're not talking here about people all that long in the tooth, we're talking about people my age. I'm in quite a privileged position of having a job for the next two years. All going well, that is. Providing I don't completely blow it. I've got a contract that says, “we want you for the next two years”. But I'm as aware as the next person that, when contracts expire, that can be it. Which means in two years time I could very well be joining these thousands of people in their 50's who are finding it impossible to get work because employers aren't interested in them because of their age. I also, whenever possible, scroll down my feed and every time I see a person that is #opentowork, I drop an invite to my next #LinkedInLive event or if I am not having one my #YouTube page that has hundreds of videos and audio events. I know that I have helped thousands of people in some way to get out of the canyon called #Unemployment and back into the job world. I do this from the heart because I never forget how bad it felt to be unemployed and how awful every day was until I knew what my next job was. That said, I cannot believe when someone is offered free help from someone who has been doing it for as long as I have that they would ignore my invite and not come to the event. All I will say is here is an invite to my next event and if you are a #jobseeker you should come because something I say will help you to get in next great opportunity. Greenhouse, the leading hiring platform, has published its 2025 Workforce & Hiring Report, painting a stark reality of today's job market. Nearly two in three Irish job seekers (63%) are grappling with intense pressure in a fiercely competitive market. As hiring automation, employer ghosting, or unresponsiveness, and bias reshape the hiring landscape, candidates are fighting fire with fire, turning to AI agents, resume hacks, and interview cheating just to get noticed. Based on a report of 2,200 active job seekers in Ireland, the U.K., and the U.S., the findings highlight how Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers are navigating today's volatile hiring environment. Job Hunting Is Survival of the Fittest Hiring is entering a new era, and candidates are feeling the heat: only 7% believe the market favours them. This intensity is wearing down confidence. Nearly half of Irish job seekers (42%) say the job market is very competitive. Poor hiring practices are compounding pressure in a market where employers hold all the power. The vast majority (82%) of candidates say they've encountered bait-and-switch tactics, where the job they applied for turned out to be different than what was ultimately offered. Nearly half (46%) of Gen Z candidates report that the benefits package was less comprehensive than what was initially presented. Adding to the strain is a sense of instability: one in every two (49%) Irish workers feel insecure in their current role, as economic uncertainty ripples across industries. Nearly one quarter of workers (23%) face employment uncertainty, with 20% reporting they've been warned their role might be affected. Job hunting has become an uphill battle, and to stay competitive, over two-thirds of candidates (63%) have altered their resumes, and over a third (39%) of those who admit to it say they embellish their qualifications. AI Is the New Cheat Code The old hiring playbook is failing. And candidates are turning to AI to stay ahead. Nearly three in four Irish job seekers (73%) now use AI in their job search, with interview prep (42%) leading the way, followed by analyzing job ads (28%) and generating work samples (25%). There are also instances of AI usage backfiring on candidates: while 41% say AI has created and helps them uncover new opportunities, 54% report it's making job hunting harder by raising the bar on skills and intensifying competition. Gen Z is driving the AI surge, with 81% using AI tools in their job search, more than Millennials (76%) or Gen X (64%). Nearly one in five (19%) are even deploying AI agents to apply for jobs automatically. But in the race to stand out, ethical lines are getting blurred: half of Gen Z candidates (50%) admit to altering the skills on their resumes, with 44% embellishing work experience or adding AI capabilities they don't actually have. Meanwhile, most candidates are left without a playbook: 82% say employers provide little or no guidance on AI use in interviews. Only 22% believe AI is acceptable when explicitly permitted, while 54% either reject it entirely or aren't sure where the ethical boundaries lie. "Hiring is stuck in an AI doom loop," says Daniel Chait, CEO and Co-founder of Greenhouse. "Only 7% of candidates feel that the market favors them right now. As this technology advances, it makes it easier than ever to apply, flooding the system with noise. With 25% of Gen Z saying AI has made it harder for them to stand out, candidates entering the market are up against more applications, more automation, and less clarity. "We don't need more friction or hoops to jump through; we need a hiring process that allows people's true selves to come through more clearly and more completely. A more human and three-dimensional hiring process that helps candidates showcase their skills and focus their job search is the only way to cut through the chaos and connect the right people to the right roles." Discrimination as the Invisible Filter Discrimination is still showing u...
Wellington Pools is looking for a lifeguard over 50 years old according to an advertisement, which told applicants "forget your preconceptions of what lifeguard looks like...we want people from all stages of life." But a job site for older workers looking for jobs said with 7000 registered jobseekers over the age of 50, they need more opportunities like this to match the spike in people looking. The team behind the seniors at work website say they have noticed more and more older workers have been struggling over the last nine months and a slow down in recruitment generally especially impacts them. Seniors at Work Founder Ian Fraser spoke to Melissa Chan-Green.

As the attractions industry faces workforce reductions and career shifts, professionals are grappling with the daunting challenge of reentering the job market. For many, the process feels outdated, impersonal, and overwhelming. In this episode, Matt and Josh talk about how to make the job search more effective and fulfilling, sharing timely advice gathered from recruiters, job seekers, and their own experiences navigating career development in the attractions industry. The Resume: More Than a Job Description "Make sure you're telling the story—not just what you did, but how you made an impact." Matt shares insights from a recent virtual job fair, emphasizing the importance of showing accomplishments, not just tasks. Recruiters want resumes that demonstrate measurable outcomes and individual contributions, not ones that copy and paste job descriptions. Using AI like ChatGPT can help refine wording and formatting, but it's crucial that the document still reflects your authentic voice and personality. Using AI as a Tool, Not a Crutch "Let it review your work, not do your work." While AI tools can help polish resumes and cover letters, Matt and Josh warn against relying on them to create your materials from scratch. Authenticity still matters. AI should be used to enhance your message, not replace your voice. If a recruiter can't tell who you are from your writing, your application loses its impact. Your Network Is More Powerful Than Your Resume "If you know someone at the company, let them know you're applying." Both hosts agree that your network can often open doors more effectively than a resume alone. A referral can elevate your application and help bypass filters that might otherwise discard it. Matt and Josh emphasize the importance of not only maintaining your network but actively growing it, especially through platforms like LinkedIn. Be Politely Assertive "Follow up. Let them know you're still interested." Recruiters value candidates who show enthusiasm and persistence, without becoming overbearing. Borrowing the phrase “politely assertive” from Denise Beckson of Morey's Piers, Matt and Josh encourage job seekers to check in respectfully after applying or interviewing. A thoughtful follow-up message can show genuine interest and prevent your application from falling through the cracks. Transferring Skills Across Industries "If you managed safety at a water park, you can manage safety on a manufacturing floor." Don't underestimate how relevant your attractions-industry experience is in other fields. From safety standards to leadership and guest service, these skills are highly transferable. Matt and Josh advise job seekers to highlight how their expertise applies beyond the attractions world, especially when considering roles in adjacent industries. Redefining Your Identity and Building Your Brand "Your employer is not your identity—your skills are." Josh discusses the importance of separating your identity from your employer (whether past or present) and instead focusing on your personal brand. Creating thought leadership content and posting regularly can build credibility, demonstrate expertise, and attract opportunities organically. Reflecting on Fit and Culture "Interview the company as much as they interview you." Not every job is the right fit, and that's okay. Both hosts stress the importance of evaluating a company's culture and values during the application process. Josh shares a story of walking out of a shadowing experience after realizing the role wasn't a match—an empowering reminder that saying no is sometimes the best move. Practical Advice from Recruiters "Apply directly through company websites for better visibility and data accuracy." Recruiters note that applications from company sites are more complete and reliable than those from job boards like Indeed. Matt also highlights the importance of clarity in the hiring timeline, encouraging hiring managers to communicate expectations clearly to applicants. Whether you're refining a resume, growing your network, or exploring other industries, the path to your next opportunity begins with knowing who you are and what you bring to the table. This week on The Chad & Cheese Podcast, we unpack the myth that money = motivation. Spoiler: it doesn't. Turns out people want to grow, belong, and not dread Mondays. Who knew? Dr. Linderbaum schools us on why leaders are often the last to know when morale is circling the drain, how Gen Z wants feedback like it's an IV drip, and why career development beats a 3% raise every time. Oh, and we talk about AI—not the scary kind, but the kind that might actually help humans feel more human at work. Imagine that.
There is one fact that Lisa Countryman Quiroz, CEO of Jewish Vocational Service Bay Area (JVS) wants you to take away from our deeply data-informed conversation. There is a proven pathway for people stuck in low-quality jobs to secure high-quality employment that moves families into the middle class. And doing so generates a quantifiable return on investment. That fact is documented in unimpeachable quarterly earnings data collected by the state of California's Employment Development Department. Job seekers, primarily women of color, come to JVS with aspirations and the need to provide for their families. JVS's investments in them, customized training for specialized positions in industry and public agencies, one-on-one staff support and advocacy for systems change, make a better life for families achievable. Jobseekers come to JVS having earned around $40k annually. Post training, they earn $60k and in 5 years their salaries are over $100k. These results are life-changing for families and a huge win for economic mobility. At JVS, Lisa Countryman Quiroz is making transformational progress notwithstanding the threat of federal funding cuts and policy rollbacks. There is so much to learn from this episode. Listen to Lisa and share!
