This week on Between Two Beers we talk to Duncan SandlantDuncan is widely regarded as the leading agent in world rugby for coaches - at one point he represented two thirds of the best rugby coaches in the world. He's been shortlisted by Rugby World as one of the 50 most influential people in the game on three occasions and is the only agent to have ever appeared on the list. He's a Kiwi, who started out as a lawyer before starting a rugby agency from his attic in London 20 years ago, and he built that up to create the largest player rugby agency in the world (Esportif) with offices in 13 different countries before they were acquired by Wasserman 2 years ago.Duncan has represented everyone from Sonny Bill to Tana Umaga, Jerry Collins and Andrew Mehrtens, to Dave Rennie, Stephen Jones, Gregor Townsend - and pretty much everyone in between. This is insight into the behind the scenes world of rugby wheeling and dealing that you haven't heard before. Duncan has operated out of the shadows for most of his professional life - and this was a really cool and rare chance, to let you in to his world. You'll love this one. This episode is brought to you by TAB, download the new app today and get your bet on!Between Two Beers is now part of the Acast Creator Network, listen wherever you get your podcasts from, or watch the video on YouTube. It's always good catching up with Sonny Bill and seeing what new ceilings have been broken in his life.  This time when we caught up he had just come off a 5-week training camp in Ireland and England with none other than the Heavy-Weight Champion in the world, Tyson Fury as well Kiwi Boxing greats Joseph Parker and David Nyika.  He lets us in on his time and the little challenge that Fury set him on the first day of training. He takes us back to the early days when he talks about his childhood days and the people that he was around and how his parents taught him to stand up for what he thought was right no matter the consequences.Sonny let us in on some of his failings during his lengthy career and how he was able to learn from those and grow from those experiences and achieve success at the highest level of the different sports he's been involved in.He shares how his faith has given him the self-confidence to get out onto the other side of the camera as a commentator and how it anchors him as a way to look after his mental wellbeing.Always an informative and educational discussion when we catch up.Listen to hear more.

The extraordinary and revealing autobiography of one of rugby's most entertaining and complicated figures. 'I lived for winter Saturdays and played footy at lunchtime and after school, while at home I passed, kicked, tackled and discussed the game endlessly with my big bro. I ignored bad weather; I just wanted to play. When there weren't enough numbers to make up teams, a few of us kids would still get together and practice. That's where my offloads were born.' As a shy part-Samoan boy growing up in the suburbs of Auckland, Sonny Bill Williams thought about footy constantly. For him, the dream of playing professional NRL was so big that nothing else ever came close. Fast forward to 2004, and 18-year-old Sonny Bill's dream was coming true. Making his first-grade debut for the Canterbury Bulldogs, he would become an integral part of their premiership-winning team and be named Rookie of the Year. The league culture was train hard, play hard and then party hard. Alcohol, drugs, women - it was a slippery slope for a naïve teen looking to find his place. Too soon, the joy of winning a premiership gave way to an emptiness that not even footy could fix. Struggling, Sonny made a decision that for many was unforgivable. He walked out on the Bulldogs and flew to France. Scathing headlines, subpoenas and threatened lawsuits followed. But so, too, would come the realisation that he couldn't run from the man in the mirror. In this powerful, open and honest memoir, Sonny Bill shares the triumphs and missteps of his extraordinary sporting life and reveals how faith and family have made him the man he is today. Sonny Bill Williams is a once in a generation athlete - a player with immense sporting talent in rugby league, rugby union and boxing. In his remarkable career, he has won World Cups with the All Blacks in 2011 and 2015 and helped the Kiwis reach the 2013 final of the rugby league equivalent. Compelling and searingly honest, You Can't Stop the Sun from Shining is essential listening for any sports fan.

He packed up his bags in a matter of weeks and moved from NZ at 15 to come and play for Parramatta despite never really watching Rugby League as a kid.He has a crazy work ethic and resilient mind set. Whether its his physical training ... where he was once put himself in hospital trying to win a time trial at training or whether he’s decided to learn how to sew so he can start his own clothing brand that honours his heritage.Dylan is also extremely aware of a the world around him, especially for someone so young and does plenty of work with children who are less fortunate than him to give back for all hes been blessed with. This chat has a bit of every thing ... including his embarrassing encounters with footy legends ... to how game day nerves cause him a lot of stomach issues. Don’t listen to that part while you’re eating breakfast. We also talk big money contracts, playing for the all blacks and so much more. I hope you enjoy it

It was great to chat with Tayler and Regan and hear that despite being away from competition, the team is still having a blast and enjoying their time spent together. Listening in on this episode, be prepared to hear about: gruesome injuries, Tik Tok stars on the team, balancing your macros with Ben & Jerry's ice cream, and plenty of hot takes. When Sonny Bill Williams subbed off last night, he had a massive smile on his face.He bowed a little to the Japanese crowd. At the end of the game, he brought his daughter onto the pitch. He walked over to the stands and gave a young boy his playing boots. And that was it. His time as an All Black was over.We focus on the code-hopping a lot, but even if you just look at Sonny Bill Williams’ achievements in rugby – forget league and forget boxing - he has had an extraordinary career. He’s a World Cup winner. An ITM Cup winner. A Super Rugby winner. He came runner up in the European championship. He’s held the Ranfurly Shield. He’s an Olympian. And it’s his time in rugby that has come to define Sonny Bill Williams as the professional athlete of the modern rugby age. If you think back to when he started his professional career, it could all have been so different. Of course there was the fallout with league. The tabloid scandals. The partying. Williams threatened to go the way of many other athletes who are showered with money and adoration at a young age and kind of lose their way. But he didn’t. He pulled it together. The tabloid scandals dried up. And Sonny Bill developed into quite a different man.For all the criticism of his big contracts and fancy photo spreads, all the people who used to call him Money Bill Williams, you don’t hear nearly enough people remembering that Sonny Bill Williams gave $100,000 of his own money to the Christchurch Earthquake appeal. As the country’s highest-profile Muslim, he used his leave in March of this year to travel back to the Christchurch and support the Community after the massacre. He prayed at the Al Noor Mosque.I’ll never forget having my hair cut by a Muslim guy in New Yorl. Someone who’d never watched a game of rugby in his life, who couldn’t wait to show me an international Muslim newspaper with Sonny Bill Williams on the cover, handing his World Cup Winner’s medal to a young fan whom he thought had been unfairly roughed up by security. ‘This’ said my barber… ‘this is a great Muslim.’I want to read you the post from Sonny Bill’s Instagram… the first thing he posted after last weekend’s loss… to almost 900 thousand followers. It’s a photo of him and his family, in Tokyo, his daughter in his arms. They’re all smiling.‘Beaten by a better team tonight. Good luck to England’s lads next week. I smile a lot these days because I know how blessed I am to do what I love for a job and to have my family here for the journey.’When we talk about rugby players, we talk a lot about role models. We love to pile on when they have sex in airport toilets or go off binge drinking behind the coach’s back. So why do we still pile on when rugby players do the opposite? Why do we pile on when as role models, they consistently exceed our standards?I remember interviewing Sonny Bill eight or ten years ago, and asking him in a little quiet moment what he honestly aspired to. ‘It’s simple.’ He said. ‘I want to be a good man.’ I think Sonny Bill Williams has achieved that and more. As he walked off that pitch last night, his last night in an All Blacks jersey, I thought about how much I’ll miss his dinky little backhand offloads and physical presence in the midfield. But actually, what he does off the pitch is so much more important. In a sense, he has redefined professionalism. He’s decent. He carefully and quite deliberately uses his platform for good. I think Sonny Bill Williams has set the professional standard for the modern All Blacks.

All Blacks second five-eighth Sonny Bill Williams has reportedly been offered a staggering $9.7m deal to return to rugby league after the Rugby World Cup.The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the 34-year-old, who came off the bench in Saturday's World Cup semifinal defeat to England, has been offered the two-year deal to play for the Toronto Wolfpack in Europe's Super League. The Canadian franchise is funded by Australian mining billionaire David Argyle and will make its debut in the Super League next year after winning promotion by beating Featherstone Rovers in the second division final.According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Williams has also received multi-year, multi-million dollar offers from overseas rugby clubs. His contract with New Zealand Rugby comes to an end at the conclusion of the Rugby World Cup. The All Blacks play Wales in the bronze final on Friday night which is expected to be Williams' final test for New Zealand. The two-time World Cup winner fronted an All Blacks press conference yesterday in Japan and when asked to reveal his sporting future Williams said: "Soon bro, soon, we're just trying to finalise that."Williams also appeared to brush off recent reports that suggested he would be joining the Sydney Roosters in a coaching capacity next year.Sonny Bill Williams talking at an All Blacks press conference yesterday. Photo / Mark MitchellWolfpack head coach Brian McDermott previously said Toronto wanted to bring in a "David Beckham-type player" and that Williams fit the bill."Our club would want to have a name that's absolutely international that everybody would recognise and help the profile of our game, very much like David Beckham did for Major League Soccer," McDermott added."But he would have to be a very good player as well, he's got to be able to do the job that I want him to do. There would be no token player or just a headline-grabbing player."While he wasn't prepared to talk about his future in yesterday's press conference, Williams offered some insight into the next All Blacks coach with Steve Hansen stepping down after the World Cup.Williams was asked about Ian Foster's credentials and rather than endorse the All Blacks attack coach he instead opted to make a strong push for the inclusion of a Māori or Pacific Island coach within the All Blacks set-up.Blues assistant Tana Umaga and successful Japan coach Jamie Joseph are two such figures, while Blues head coach Leon MacDonald has played for the New Zealand Māori, and Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger has Tahitian and Samoan heritage.Dave Rennie, a man who Williams shares close ties with after they won two Super Rugby titles at the Chiefs, has Cook Islands heritage but he is thought to be close to signing on to replace Michael Cheika at the Wallabies."When it comes to that there are going to be a few guys putting their heads up isn't there? By a few reports I may have to put my hand up too because I'm stepping into coaching," Williams said with a smile."Good luck to everyone who puts their hand up and tries to step into that role. There are a lot of coaches who will be leaving at the end of this year."One thing I would probably put to NZR is it would be good to see a Pacific Islander or Māori in the coaching system that would have a bit of influence because the way the game is going and is today, there's a lot of Māori and Island boys that play for the All Blacks."I'm just thinking how can we get a lot more out of those boys. I know there's a bit of space there for that growth."

Former Wallaby and outspoken media commentator Peter FitzSimons has stoked the fires of trans-Tasman rivalry on the eve of Bledisloe II, firing a number of shots at the 'sad declining All Blacks.'Speaking to Newstalk ZB, FitzSimons took aim at All Black veterans for their sluggish play last weekend, labelling the loss a sign the defending World Champions were on the decline.FitzSimons also suggested the 'dramatic changes' the All Blacks made to their starting lineup tomorrow night reflected a coach who had lost confidence in his team."Sonny Bill Williams is 34, how's Sonny Bill going to go up against James O'Connor?" Fitzsimons said. "The All Blacks just looked a bit old and slow."The Wallabies simply outclassed the All Blacks. They humiliated those poor All Blacks and it was good for rugby."I thought it was going to be an absolute slaughter, the sad decline of New Zealand rugby I said to myself, when will they come good?"FitzSimons' comments come just days after the Daily Telegraph poked fun at the All Blacks using Faceapp to publish photos which turn current New Zealand stars into old men.Sam Whitelock and Kieran Read as mocked by the Daily Telegraph via FaceApp.Sonny Bill Williams, Sam Whitelock and captain Kieran Read all got the photo treatment, under a headline "Wallabies warned not to take All Blacks' senior citizens lightly".Meanwhile, two inexperienced wings, Sevu Reece and George Bridge, were named yesterday to start against the Wallabies as part of Steve Hansen's radical plan to bounce back and retain the Bledisloe Cup.It was just two of five changes Hansen made in what has been regarded his most dramatic reaction to a loss, as the All Blacks look to double down on their gamble to test which players are capable under pressure ahead of next month's World Cup."Obviously we'd like Ben, Owen and Rieko playing better, but we've made decisions because we've got to find out more about these other people in big pressure-cooker situations," Hansen explained at a press conference in Auckland yesterday."To win a World Cup we've had to roll the dice a bit."Steve Hansen with Sevu Reece during training. Photo / GettySurprised by Hansen's selections, however, FitzSimons said the changes reflected a head coach who had lost confidence."Throwing them into the furnace five weeks out from the World Cup seems an extraordinary move to me," he said."It looked to me like the coach had lost confidence in his team … I suppose he knows what he's doing but it seems very odd to me."FitzSimons voiced his confidence for the Wallabies to claim a back-to-back victory over the All Blacks on Saturday, crediting the potential of Wallabies coach Michael Cheika. The two sides will meet tomorrow night at Eden Park.

Andrew Dickens: Kavanaugh has an excellent legal mind, but needs to harden up

So the end of the week that was.As I said yesterday Brett Kavanaugh will be a Supreme Court Justice by Monday. A job for life. One of the 9 protectors of the Constitution, the lodestone of the American democracy. The vote will be 54-45.  No-one will back off the party lines. His decisions have never been overturned by the Supreme Court. He’s a conservative but he’s not the devil. But yesterday I said he failed the job application because he cracked under pressure. He cried, he whined, he raged, he got matters of law wrong. I called him a snowflake. I got a number of emails and texts getting stuck into me for that. One called me sanctimonious. All said how would I cope under the accusation of sexual harassment. That’s not the point. Kavanaugh's job is a unique one. At the centre of American law and society. He will face far greater firestorms than this allegation based on vague memories from decades ago. With his vast skill, he should have mounted a better defence of himself that he did. Clarence Thomas went through much more with greater dignity. Brett will need to harden up as he has many enemies.I want to congratulate the government on their Construction Skills Action Plan. Finally, someone got to the nub of the problems that we’ve had with construction and infrastructure for so long. The government also provides construction with a fifth of their work and so now they’re using their purchasing power to get construction back into line. Whoever pays the piper picks the tune. They’ve highlighted an industry that doesn’t plan for the future and whose cut throat competition has meant they’ve actually cut their own throat. An industry that makes up a fifth of our economy and hires a quarter of million people but should really be hiring hundred thousand more. I think the productivity constraints in construction is a far greater threat to our financial well being than any government tinkering with labour lawsThe government is often criticised for not having a clue about business and driving us backwards. Well yesterday is proof that they’re not without a few tricks of their own. You wonder why something like this didn’t happen years ago.And finally, I can’t wait for this South Africa test on the high veldt. It should be a cracker. Next year during the World Cup I think we’ll look back at the Wellington loss and realise how valuable it was for resetting the Abs mindset. And I’m so glad for jack Goodhue. I remember a while back plumping for Ryan Crotty. A Sports dude told me I was an idiot. Crotty wasn’t first grade.  He called him a journeyman. A player without the flash. That was exactly what I liked about him. And now that sports dude is running a B and B in Bali. Enuf said. But Goodhue is the same but I think even better. To have Sonny Bill and Jack Goodhue running at the hearts of the Boks is going to be a very exciting thing to see
