Matthew 28 | 5/3/2026 | Pastor Matt Jones. This Lord's Day, we will be in the Gospel of Matthew, looking at Jesus' call to follow Him and His command to make disciples. In a moment shaped by the recent presidential assassination attempts and ongoing political divides, we want to think biblically about formation, as people are being discipled more by digital voices, rather than Scripture, let alone a local church.
In this episode, we dive into a crucial conversation with Mark Vincent about Digital Discipleship, exploring how our 'focus 'attention' has become a commodified resource that can lead to a form of "spiritual slavery" if left unchecked.

Welcome to episode 235 of Grasp the Bible. In this episode, we will examine the topic of digital discipleship. Key takeaways: Technology isn't just a tool we use; it's a tool that uses us—or more precisely, it shapes our habits, expectations, attention, and relationships. If we don't anchor identity in Christ, we will anchor it in public approval, and that becomes a new form of slavery. Sometimes what looks like a “spiritual problem” is also a formed habit problem—people are exhausted and overstimulated. The challenge isn't to reject technology completely, but to use it in ways that honor God and build His kingdom. Quotable: We become what we repeatedly do. Application: The phrase "think on these things" means to calculate, consider carefully, or meditate on. It's an accounting term—we should carefully evaluate what we allow into our minds through screens. The battle for your life is won or lost in your thought life. Guard your mind with the same vigilance you'd guard your home. There is no "off the clock" for the Christian. Your social media isn't a "free zone" where different rules apply. The same Lord who sees you in worship sees you on Facebook at 11 PM. You wouldn't let a thief into your house to steal your possessions. Why do you voluntarily hand him your phone and let him steal your hours? Evaluate your screen time with one question: Is this helping me love God and love my neighbor—or training me to love myself and the world? Is America in revival? Well, not quite, according to Barna CEO David Kinnaman, who joins Carey to discuss 2026 church trends. New data shows overall American Christianity is still in decline AND that Gen Z men are dialing into Jesus, young adults are the most churched group in America, and that we're setting ourselves up for a succession crisis.

With Stu traveling and Tim unwell, Joel brings in the super-subs, Ethan and Brayden, to tackle the 6-7 meme and what it tells us about internet culture, and how Christians should respond. They start with a primer on the 6-7 meme, following a breakdown by aidanetcetera on Instagram that claims it's evidence that "postmodernists won the culture war" and what it means to meme something into relevance. The guys discuss whether this holds up. Is 6-7 actually abstract art, or is it just teenagers doing what they've always done, creating subculture that adults don't understand? They discuss the lifecycle of memes (why they die when younger kids adopt them), the difference between little memes and big movements like grunge, and whether capital-M Movements can even happen anymore when everyone's algorithm shows them different realities. But this isn't just internet anthropology. Joel shares his research on getting his 11-year-old son a phone, Australia's social media ban for under-16s, the rise of sextortion, why helicopter parenting offline paired with complete digital freedom is naive, and what Christian wisdom looks like in practice. If older Christians are going to say the internet is bad for development and then we sit around on our phones, what are we modelling? Despite cultural shifts toward declining literacy and shorter attention spans, God is still moving, people are becoming Christians through social media, mini-revivals are happening in the UK, and young believers are figuring out how to be Christian in digital spaces. The episode lands on a hopeful note: movements still happen, they just look different now. And Christians are always in the middle of them. From women transforming the Roman Empire through radical hospitality to hippies doubling down on to Gen Z finding Jesus through TikTok, God works through every cultural shift. The question isn't whether to fear the movement, but how to partner with young people as they generatively figure out what it means to follow Jesus online and offline.Timestamps:00:00 - Intro and laying out the generations04:16 - Is this 6-7 meme a work of art?12:55 - When are memes cool and not cool?20:38 - A movement of understanding how to be online28:21 - Leaning into what people see as freedoms without knowing the consequences34:19 - What do we model as the digital world becomes increasingly more prevalent?43:44 - Movements still happen, and Christians are still in themDiscussed on this episode:aidanetcetera on InstagramDoot Doot, by SkrillaLamelo Ball basketball editsSocial media banLewis's Chip Lunch episode on the internetRichard Dawkins a cultural ChristianAbout the Shock Absorber:A podcast for church leaders and ministry pioneers who want to do church differently. Smartphones have become the default for families, but what if the default is actually harmful? In this episode, Davies Owens talks with Chris Kaspar, founder and CEO of Techless, about why modern devices were never designed with children in mind and how parents can choose a healthier path.Chris shares the moment that opened his eyes as a foster parent and explains why families today feel trapped between two extremes. Either give kids full access to the digital world or reject technology altogether. He argues that both options miss the mark. The real issue is the design, incentives, and addictive features built into mainstream phones that quietly shape identity, attention, and spiritual formation.

Our Summer 2025 series, Beside Still Waters, focuses on the places where creativity brings life into a world fatigued by brokenness and division. From jazz to Jane Austen and in between, this season we'll focus on the ways literature and the arts can refresh and challenge our inner lives—and connect us with the Creator of the good, the true, and the beautiful.Guided by theologian and musician David Bailey and concert pianist and chamber musician Mia Chung, this episode explores the concept that music involves mutual support, balance, and give and take among musicians to create a cohesive experience. And we reflect on how Christian communities can apply these principles of collaboration and harmony to create faith communities that are transformative:To the extent that the arts can actually cultivate that practice of incorporating the right hemisphere and in communication with the left, it's always together, you know, they're, complimentary. I think we can benefit each other in terms of community formation, but even benefit our own intellectual lives and the amount of joy we experience living in this world. - Mia Chung If this work resonates with you, please consider joining the Trinity Forum community as a society member. This podcast is an edited version of our Online Conversation recorded in June, 2024. Key Takeaways: Digital discipleship utilizes modern technology to deepen and extend the reach of traditional ministry efforts. Embracing digital platforms like video can enhance communication with volunteers and churchgoers, making messages more personal and impactful. By leading with videos, ministries can increase engagement and participation from their audience, especially among younger digital-native generations. Simple yet authentic videos, even short greetings or thank-you messages, can make a profound difference in making individuals feel seen and valued. Leveraging volunteer involvement in creating digital content can spread the responsibility and encourage collective investment in the ministry. Notable Quotes: "It's about visual. Feedback on the recent episode about the teen mental health report by the CDC was so strong that the Holy Post gang revisits the topic. Jonathan Haidt says three untruths that fuel depression were embraced by progressives ten years ago, but now they're commonplace among conservatives too. Then, in 1976, Jimmy Carter represented a biblically-rooted evangelicalism that was also politically progressive. So, why did white evangelicals abandon him—or did they? And former Facebook executive, Nona Jones, explains why social media companies say their mission is to create community but their business models do the opposite. Jones still believes there is hope for these platforms and is now working with YouVersion to build digital disciples. Plus, respected historian, Dave, believes there's a buried treasure under Kate's house.
