Abortion Access Front's Operation Save Abortion weekend has arrived! What better way to pregame than with a whole new “Feminist Buzzkills Live!” pod drop. Moj and Marie are out getting their summer wedding fix, but don't worry, Lizz won't be blabbing solo this week. We called in some serious Roe-or-Die reinforcement to deliver the scoop on all the latest anti-abortion BS from the invasive misogynistic species trying to get all up in your junk. Assisting in our weekly ritual of popping off are FOUR legendary, game changing, ass-kicking, pro-abortion renegades. Drumroll please… Kicking us off to talk the latest repro news is the author of Handbook for a Post-Roe America and operations director of the West Alabama Women's Center, Robin Marty! She's also poppin' off about the (lack of) accessible healthcare options in Alabama, and rave about ELLA, the “souped-up emergency contraception” YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT. PLUS! Think Beyoncé is the best thing the South gave us? Think again. Powerhouse interim executive director of ARC Southeast, Jalessah Jackson, and new executive director of the National Network of Abortion Funds, Oriaku Njoku, are dropping knowledge on us about abortion care in the South and why using a Reproductive Justice framework for your abortion activism is the way you build sustaining power. AND! If that ain't enough for you, we've got comedian, leader of the band Tigers and Monkeys, and co-host of the We Don't Even Know podcast, Shonali Bhowmik in the house! She's getting real with us about grief, finding the joy in the chaos, and more! The world is heavy, but we got you! FINAL ROLL CALL: Operation Save Abortion weekend has arrived! Registration closes tonight, Friday 7/15, at 11:59 PM ET. It's not a march, it's your training day. Can't make it? Have no fear! Shonali Bhowmik is a musician, actress, comedienne, filmmaker, writer with a law degree! Her bio is extensive, but here's a taste of what she's involved with mostly right now—she co-hosts her own live variety show podcast series called We Don't Even Know AND she is the leader of the indie rock band Tigers and Monkeys for which she is the songwriter, singer, and guitar player. I learned so much from this session with Shonali. She creates purely from the need to create and grow. I kicked the emotional tires and she honestly just seems like a naturally happy, yet driven creative person, self-motivated—with a key ingredient—HARD WORK! Oh and a great family, which she appreciates. Further Bio: She is a member of the popular comedy collective Variety Shac, with Chelsea Peretti, Heather Lawless and Andrea Rosen. Shonali was the host of the Shac's popular Upright Citizen's Brigade live show. She has also created television pilots for the Adult Swim and IFC networks. She wrote and directed the short film, Sardines Out Of A Can which was screened in 6 cities across the globe including Madrid, Spain; Bangalore, India and won best romantic comedy short at the Bare Bones International Film Fest 2014. She has her own independent music and comedy record label called Little Lamb Recordings. She was one of the leaders of Ultrababyfat who was featured in David Cross' tour DVD Let America Laugh. Shonali has released eight albums including her solo full length release 100 Oaks Revival and those with her rock n' roll outfits,Tigers and Monkeys and Ultrababyfat. Tigers and Monkeys' newest album Saturday Destroyer was released in September 2018. Shonali can be seen in the feature length romantic comedy, Isn't It Romantic which was released in February 2019. There's so much more about Shonali—check out her website and Instagram
Shonali Bhowmik (musician/filmmaker/actor, Tigers and Monkeys) chats with Kurt and Scotty about the human suction cup, visitors getting injured at the Titanic museum, a man who woke up with amnesia, a man who brought his mother's ashes on a date and how the Matrix code came from a sushi recipe! Seana and Joyce speak with Shonali Bhowmik of Tigers and Monkeys and Variety Shac.
Christian Felix is an actor from Chicago now based in New York City. He now regularly does a specific kind of acting in diversity training, which is one of the coolest jobs you’ve never heard of previously. No matter what you say about Christian, he is definitely a professional storyteller. On top of him expressively recounting amazing adventures , he’s a spectacular listener. This is what makes him successful throughout his years and his willingness to be professional in all setting yet still have fun. The exact person you want on any filmset. Christian’s theme for the episode is how film sets can be fun and funny or incredibly contentious and still create great works of art. The short film Book Club by VARIETY SHAC Christian brought is a film where he was a background actor with hilarious comedians (Chelsea Peretti and Fred Armisen to name a couple) where his main job was not to laugh. He talks about other television sets such as the show Blacklist that were more stressful and lead us directly into his feature choice Blue Collar. Blue Collar had three lead actors who were in a tif during the time of shooting. Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel, and Yaphet Kotto were all told they were the lead and drugs and feuds lead to a rough set life as Christian explains in descriptive detail. The story centers around worker’s unions and the fight of the worker against the larger system is a story that continues to be retold and relived throughout the test of time. If you want to hear more of Christian, please check out our podcast We Don’t Even Know where he co-hosts with Shonali Bhowmik.
WDEK notes the seriousness of these times and our hearts are with all the first responders and health care workers working on the frontlines during this pandemic. You are our heroes. We have friends that are sick with Covid-19 and we are thinking of you and send love your way. We hope that our show provides a little bit of lightness, fun, connection and somewhat of an escape for you in this time of crisis. For the first time ever, We Don't Even Know w Christian Felix Justin Hall and Shonali Bhowmik did a Self Isolation FB Live Stream show. Thanks to everyone who was with us and special thanks to our brilliant guests - Andrea Rosen Brian Bahe and Chris Maxwell! Christian, Justin and Shonali come to you from each of their self isolation abodes in NYC. They discuss their coping methods and their own do's and don'ts during a pandemic. Also Christian is giving away a fondue set. Our first guest is actress, comedian and Shonali's Variety Shac sister Andrea Rosen! Andrea did not wash her hair or shave her armpits. We discuss why self isolation with young children in LA is much better than self isolation in NYC. Other topics include making a horror film with her husband John Gemberling and her kids. Hopefully we'll get to see it on Vimeo along with her new film The Rain Poncho. Our second guest is comedian Brian Bahe who is self isolating in Ridgewood, NYC. He has newly dyed hair and comes from Arizona. Have you ever been a part of a dad comedy scene? Well Brian came to NYC to avoid doing just that. Brian has a unique voice in comedy in that he is Native American and gay. We talk family, fetishes and coming out. Look for Brian's IG show "R U OK?" It's so great! Our final guest is singer, songwriter and guitar god Chris Maxwell who is isolating with 3 women (his wonderful wife Kelly and two former WDEK musical guests Ambrosia Parsley & Holly Miranda)and 2 kids in Woodstock, NY. That's what you can do in the country. Chris has just released a beautiful full length release called New Store No.2. He is a longtime friend of Shonali's and she can't stop talking about that. He is a sharp dressed man and is "good with the ladies." He performs two songs in his studio live with the help of his friends Ambrosia and Holly, 1) Most of What I Learned I Learned from Women and 2) Away We Go. For those of you who'd like to see our amazing faces: Here's our FB Live Version of the show: https://www.facebook.com/WDEKPodcast/videos/250355722765374/ Here's our YouTube Version of the show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpN3H0qRo6E Everyone Stay Safe and Stay At Home! Let's face it, we will be in self isolation a month from now - so we will live stream again. See you there.
We are 75 Episodes old as of of tonight, October 29, 2019. Our guest co-host is choreographer, teacher, tennis fanatic and trivia master Joe Celej. Joe joins Shonali Bhowmik to discuss all things horrific. Joe and Shonali are joined by guests artist Trish Tillman, comedian Clare O'Kane, Gary The Vampire and performer, musician, comic Lauren Maul. Trish Tillman is a visual artist who lives currently in NYC and in one of Oscar Wilde's former residences. We discuss the plight of an artist - working all alone for hours on end and not talking to anyone; having multiple jobs to supplement your income as an artist and making art as a child in Washington, DC. Shonali is convinced Trish's sculptures are influenced by the art residency she did in India in terms of the colors, decorations, materials and simple forms she uses. We discuss Bollywood horror films, slackers & Trish's solo show opening at Aysa Geisberg Gallery in Chelsea on Thursday Nov.7. Go to her opening party from 6-8pm to see her gorgeous work up close! Thomas Kelsey joins us from the audience to play the game, Name That Mystery Candy! We blindfold him and find out how many candies he named correctly after Joe inserts the candy into Thomas Mouth. Congrats to Thomas who won some seriously wonderful gifts! Clare O'Kane is a comedian from San Jose, California. We discuss opening for the emo punk band Jawbox, being a newlywed, DNA testing and how she's changed as a comedian in the past 9 years. Make sure to check out her comedy album, Let It Be and her work as a writer on the second season of Shrill. Be on the lookout for Clare in a comedy club near you! Gary The Vampire (aka comedian Matt Little) makes a surprise appearance at WDEK. He's really loud and was born in the 1600's before NYC became edgy. He quickly let us know, he's not into Halloween and we commiserate with him. Did you know that Vampires wear jean jackets? Our final guest of the night is performer, creator, musician, comic and all around do everything artist Lauren Maul. She calls herself a good witch and hosts her own show called Gathering of the Coven during the full moon. She fills us in on her latest project, an album of love songs which come from her recent agreement with her husband to have an open marriage. It turns out initially it wasn't easy for Lauren's husband to go along with Lauren's request, but a year later accommodated for her. Lauren performs two original songs in the Red Room live, 1) With A Witch and 2) All Her Things. We hope you enjoy.
Episode hosted by Justin Joseph Hall.
Shonali Bhowmik and Christian Felix co-host a chat, music, variety talk show with guests comedian and oversharer Calvin Cato; humorist, cartoonist, artisanal pencil sharpener and tv host David Rees along with music by Tigers and Monkeys. Christian Felix is back in his co-hosting seat after a trip to Singapore where they know how to deal with the heat. Calvin Cato, a self professed oversharer, explains how as a premed major, he made his way into the world of comedy. Calvin wrote an open letter to his white male friends and WDEK endorses his sentiment. Get It Off Your Chest with audience member Martina Potratz. If you ever wondered, strangers really do yell things out at pregnant women in the streets. David Rees is a master of many trades including a fact checker, an artisanal pencil sharpener, the creator of the cartoon Get Your War On, the host of a tv show called Going Deep (find it online) but one of his most important works was his Financial Transparency - Journey Into Hell presentation. Both David and Christian protect themselves from the heat with help of a handkerchief. Tigers & Monkeys, a band led by WDEK's own Shonali Bhowmik just released their third full length album titled Saturday Destroyer. Shonali along with bandmates Jason Lam, Anthony Cangelosi and Russell Dungan perform stripped down versions of their songs Over The Sun, Magic Marker and Dinosaurs Surrender.
We Don't Even Know Ep. 62 live at Red Room hosted by Shonali Bhowmik and guest co-host comedian Greg Johnson with special guests comedian Maeve Higgins, comedian Hari Kondabolu and musician Camille Harris. Get It Off Your Chest with our audience member Maggy Adeleye. Special guest co-host comedian Greg Johnson joins Shonali to host Ep. 62 of WDEK Live at Red Room while Christian Felix is away on the hottest night of the year so far. Greg, Shonali and Christian met while working on a huge case at a Manhattan law firm which is why the word "chron" makes them giddy. Greg was our Ep. 17 guest 5 years ago on 9/10/13. Greg Johnson's #1 is the first stand-up comedy album to be released by Little Lamb Recordings, Shonali's label. Our first guest is comedian, author and actress Maeve Higgins. Maeve first impressed Shonali with her sparkly sandals but Maeve's undeniable wit and intelligence are what sealed the deal in their friendship. We discuss Maeve's new book Maeve In America along with worldly topics like vagina extensions, M&M world, mental illness, Irish America and the seduction of being white. Comedian Hari Kondabolu FINALLY is a guest on WDEK live. The discussion starts out light regarding signing autographs and wet t-shirt contests and things get serious when Shonali confesses she was a prom queen and mathlete in high school. Hari has a new Netflix special out called Warn Your Relatives and TruTV documentary The Problem With Apu. Most importantly, Hari and Shonali both have brilliant mothers. Our audience member Maggy Adeleye joins us for our Get It Off Your Chest segment. We discuss using the word "sweetie", saying you are "color-blind" and being asked to be co-host for WDEK on a day when the heat index is 99 degrees in NYC. Our final guest is Camille Harris! She is a musician, writer, teacher, comedian and actress. Camille came to NYC as a former prom queen and international baccalaureate. Prom queens unite! She wrote a musical called Muffin Man and has been recently working on a children's album called Silly Jazz with Camille. She is not on social media. Impressive, right? Camille performs two songs in the Red Room, Trying Something New and Baby On The Subway. Also Shonali has a band called Tigers and Monkeys which has a new album coming out on Sept. 17, 2018. It is called Saturday Destroyer. Tigers and Monkeys will be the musical guest on the September 18th WDEK Live show.
The word multi-tasked doesn't begin to describe Shonali Bhowmik, who somehow juggles, law, music, and comedy. It would've been harder to grow up tone deaf in Nashville than Indian-American, and Shonali describes how progressive her immigrant parents were when raising Shonali and her sister Ruchi, who went on to serve as former Deputy Assistant to President Barack Obama. Shonali was no slouch either. She juggled law school while touring with her band ULTRABABYFAT. After opening for comedian David Cross, Sony came knocking with a record deal. She hadn't stopped practicing law, yet somehow added comedy to the mix. Shonali teamed up with Heather Lawless (Bob's Burgers), Chelsea Peretti (Brooklyn 911), and Andrea Rosen (Episodes, Stella) to create Variety SHAC. It was the first time female stand-ups came together to produce videos, host live shows at Upright Citizens Brigade Theater and promote one another's work. In doing so, the foursome transformed the indie comedy scene. Today, Shonali also perform with The New Yorker illustrator Marcellus Hall, as part of Monkeys and Tigers, and co-host the podcast We Don't Even Know. For more great interviews check out employeeofthemonthshow.com or follow @CatieLazarus. It won't be weird.

Writer, musician, director, actress and best of all- my near and dear friend since Fourth GRADE, Shonali Bhowmik, joins ZNP on location in NYC for a very special Thanksgiving episode! We shed some tears; we talk the quest for sleep, baking, and exercise; and we share the most important comfort that has carried us from childhood to the present: laughter. A special hour-long episode for your traveling needs. Enjoy!
Allow us to start this thirty-ninth time gathered at the podcastical water trough with a thrilling demonstration in sound! Then, we can get down to business with Mark Sam Rosenthal's opinion on buyer's remorse. Immediately following, we have an audio trailer for the new drama "Downward Facing Scared". Katie Aldhizer then pops by with the recipe for a new dip she thought up. And, after a musical interlude, Shonali Bhowmik tells us of the performance when she knew she'd finally made it. You'll agree.
Raquel and Katie talk with Nashville native Shonali Bhowmik, a New York singer, filmmaker, actress, comic, playwright... (seriously, the list goes on). We talk about finding your tribe, defining success, being defensive (in a good way!), parents who listen, who'll be there for us when we're old, and each being on our own adventure.(music: www.bensound.com)
On today's show, I talk to the wonderful Shonali Bhowmik. Originally from Nashville, Shonali's got a deep history in both music and comedy. Her first band Ultrababyfat toured with David Cross on the "Let America Laugh" tour, and is a member of the comedy group Variety SHAC with Andrea Rosen, Chelsea Peretti and Heather Lawless. Shonali's also the leader of the indie rock band Tigers and Monkeys and she has her own solo album out entitles 100 Oaks Revival. On top of that, she's the co-host of her own podcast We Don't Even Know. Also, she's an awesome person! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
Christian Felix and Shonali Bhowmik just completed their second episode of We Don't Even Know. They still give each other hell, laugh way too much, and are happy to share their inane conversations with the world. Their fantastic guest this week is the fabulous Duane Harriott, DJ to the stars, WFMU Phenom, and the only man that has a greater laugh than Shonali and Christian. Discussion topics in this episode include Miami vice with Pops, eye twitching, The Electric Slide, the Olympics, holding a blend, Rupaul's Drag Race, Carole King Demos, a porno tribute to Duane, girls gone grazy on the Subway, and Sixto Rodriguez.
Christian Felix and Shonali Bhowmik are longtime friends who met as temps at a huge lawfirm in NYC. Due to their love of laughing and giving each other hell, they figured a podcast would be the best way to share their fun with the world. Christian is from Chicago, IL and Shonali is from Nashville, TN. They are both a little bit country and a little bit rock n' roll. Wait, correction - Shonali is a little of both. Christian, is well Christian. This first episode was done as a test pilot and we figured no one would ever hear it, but we decided to hell with that. Who cares? You may actually enjoy it and who are we to stop you. This episode includes discussions on the Hipster Riviera, Girls, Nudity, Christian's father, the NYC Soda Ban, Denny's and David Cassidy. Our special guest is Jason Lam - food blogger for Me So Hungry, rock star, mashup king and passionate Tim Tebow fan! Next week we dissect our test pilot. Guess what words we will omit from our vocabulary?!
