Meet my really cool friend and great improviser, Murph McHugh. We met at a class with Billy Merritt, one of the founders of Upright Citizen's Brigade and I was struck by how effortlessly he played! He hails from DC and is quite a Renaissance man. I don't use the word "brilliant" often but it absolutely describes Murphy. To find out more about Murphy and take a class with him here are his contacts. His comedy group is Brick Penguin (brickpenguin.com) , he teaches at Dojo Comedy (dojocomedy.com) and The Radical Agreement Project (https://www.radicalagreement.com/) and his personal site is Murphymchugh.com
This episode's guest is actor, writer, voiceover artist, and unapologetic improv nerd, Roxana Ortega.Roxana is one of those rare artists whose vulnerability, honesty, and humor hit you all at once – and leave a lasting impression. If her voice sounds familiar, it might be because she's voiced everything from the passionate Frida Casagrande on The Casagrandes to characters in Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, and Monsters at Work. She's narrated Pulitzer Prize-winning novels, voiced countless animated characters, and is a master of voice matching (yes, she's dubbed for Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek). In our conversation, Roxana takes us through the unexpected path that led her to acting – from growing up in an academic household where creativity wasn't considered a “real” career, to having a life-changing epiphany while teaching English in Spain. We talk about the internal battle between playing it safe and going after what you truly want—and what it really means to decide to be an artist. We go deep into the power of improv as both a performance tool and a life philosophy, how failure can be a gift, and why community-building and representation matter now more than ever. Roxana shares how she uses her voice – literally and figuratively – to make space for underrepresented stories, and how she's continued to evolve as a writer, performer, and director.Whether you're someone who thrives on stage or someone working up the courage to take the leap, Roxana's journey will remind you that embracing risk, staying curious, and being fiercely yourself is always worth it.Episode Chapters 00:00 – Welcome + Introduction02:00 – Names, Language, and Laughter04:00 – Academic Roots & Artistic Restlessness07:55 – The Epiphany in Spain13:49 – “I Decided to Be an Actor”16:00 – Improv, Joy, and Redefining Failure21:45 – Performing, Directing, and Creating Her Own Work32:00 – Representation, Identity, and Making Space40:00 – The Tapestry of Humanity49:30 – Amazing Race Nerd Out50:50 – Blissful Spinster & Making Art on Your Own Terms54:35 – Final Words of Wisdom55:14 – What's Next for Roxana58:00 – Wrap-Up & Thank YouRoxana's Bio:Roxana Ortega is an American actor, writer, and voiceover artist who is known for voicing the ever-emotional Frida Casagrande on Nickelodeon's Emmy award-winning and Imagen award-winning cartoon The Casagrandes, a spinoff of the acclaimed series The Loud House.On-camera, she recently starred opposite Danny Trejo, Reno Wilson, and a cast of legends including Garrett Morris, Barry Bostwick, and James Hong in the Universal feature Grand-Daddy Day Care. Other film credits include The Flight Before Christmas opposite Mayim Bialik, Miss Congeniality 2 opposite Sandra Bullock, and Larry Crowne opposite Tom Hanks. Her TV guest-star credits include New Girl, Shonda Rhimes' For The People, The League, Rules of Engagement, NCIS, and the Peabody award-winning satire American Vandal.Behind the mic, she has voiced countless characters in TV, films, trailers, commercials, and some of the biggest video game franchises around, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Final Fantasy, Halo, and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. A two-time AudioFile Earphones Award winner, she has narrated the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Visit from the Goon Squad, the National Book Award finalist Sabrina & Corina, and the New York Times's non-fiction best seller Random Family to name just a few. In addition, her mimicking skills have led her to voice-match the likes of Penelope Cruz, Salma Hayek, and Jennifer Tilly.Born in Los Angeles and raised in Fullerton, CA, Roxana is of mixed Peruvian and Mexican descent. She graduated from U.C. Berkeley Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, then spent a year teaching English in Madrid, Spain. It was there, while she was elaborately acting out English vocabulary to her students, that she realized she wanted to pursue a career in acting. She returned to the Bay Area and immersed herself in theatre and improvisation, then made her way to Los Angeles where she continued her improv and acting training and began writing and performing sketch comedy.Roxana is an alumna of the CBS Diversity Sketch Comedy Showcase, Upright Citizen's Brigade, and the Groundlings Sunday Company. She has written and produced her own shorts and performed storytelling all over Los Angeles, including at The Moth GrandSLAM.She is also the creator and co-host of the live storytelling show Minority Retorts, which spotlights stories from the under-represented, and The Risking Space, a podcast about art and risk. If you're a regular listener to my show, then you know by now that I'm always excited to introduce you to intriguing creatives who are making a positive impact in their fields of expertise. Today, I'm especially excited for this conversation as in some ways I feel like this particular guest and I have been doppelganger's in both experiences and creative choices. She also happens to share one of my core beliefs that it's never too late to pursue one's dreams. Now a full time voice and on-camera actor as well as a voice over coach, Jennifer “Jenn” Sims, was deep into her career as the Director of Broadcast at one of L.A.'s top ad agencies, she worked on 100s of commercials with talent agents and casting directors and listened to thousands of voice actor's auditions. She also directed voice actors, including Emmy and Oscar winners; such as Donald Sutherland as the voice for a national healthcare campaign and produced network promos starring the incomparable voice legend, Don LaFontaine, to name a just few. As glamorous as the world of advertising appears to be in the content it creates, it can also be, as Jenn says, very toxic, and her work environment was becoming increasingly so, prompting Jenn to reflect on what she really wanted to do when she began her career in the first place; that of being an actress; as she spent years honing her quirky sense of humor while studying comedy and improv at The Upright Citizen's Brigade, The Groundlings, (which landed her on-camera commercials for Uber, Snapchat and WebMD) and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. It was during a recording session, that Jenn realized her passion for acting was undiminished and made the decision to quit her job to pursue a full time career in voice over! However, in Jenns own words, she was “older” than most people who pursue full time acting. And for anyone who is familiar with how youth oriented show business is; especially in Los Angeles, it wasn't exactly a text-book recipe for success. Leaving that coveted Director of Broadcast position was a huge risk but one she was willing to take, and so Jenn took that leap. Hannah Solow is probably one of the funniest people on the planet. She creates hysterical characters on social media, is a stand up comic, and musical theatre performer. In this very funny episode, we dive into specific social media practices, grabbing control of your career, how getting cast in Broadway's hit OH, MARY! came to be, and brilliant gems of stories from being in the industry – including what it was like to tour the country in Daniel Fish's OKLAHOMA!, for instance. Hannah Solow is currently understudy to Mary Todd Lincoln and Mary's Chaperone/Bill in Oh, Mary!, written by Cole Escola and directed by Sam Pinkleton, at The Lyceum Theatre on Broadway. She received her BFA in drama from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and has performed everywhere from The Kennedy Center to a hostel in Chinatown. She traveled to over 20 cities across the country performing as “Gertie Cummings” in Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Oklahoma!” directed by Daniel Fish. She performed on Broadway at The Cort Theatre as the “understudy” to Mike Birbiglia in his show, The New One. For many years she performed weekly at the Upright Citizen's Brigade with musical improv team, Rumpleteaser, and monthly with house sketch teams. She has performed her original standup, characters and songs at The Bell House, Caroline's, Club Cumming, Littlefield, and many more places/basements. She has taught improvisation to students pre-K through fifth grade across both Manhattan and Brooklyn. They were way funnier than she is. @babymcgoo Learn more about your ad choices. Natalie Friedman (@nataliefriedman) is a triple, or better yet quadruple-threat Actor, Comedian, and Voice Actor well known for her celebrity impressions and characters. Kim Kardashian, Cardi B, Chris Brown, Jamie Foxx, Entertainment Tonight, Complex magazine, and more have recognized and reshared her work. With a background in improv and Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater (UCB), coupled with graduating from acting school William Esper Studio, Natalie has a plethora of acting experience and has recently taken the social media world by storm with her edgy comedy, with over 1M Instagram followers. Natalie speaks fluent Russian and has mastered dozens of internal accents and over 50 character/celebrity voices. Seems like all bets are on Natalie getting on SNL soon! What Travis and Natalie discussed: How to build a social media following over time: Natalie talks about how she slowly built up her social media presence over many years, starting from just a few thousand followers. It requires consistently creating and posting content, finding your niche, collaborating with others, and having some viral moments along the way. Rome wasn't built in a day. The importance of embracing failure and rejection: Natalie discusses bombing on stage and having shows where she considered giving up comedy. Pushing through failure and rejection is crucial for success in comedy, entrepreneurship, and most fields. Use failures as learning experiences. Why you should pursue your interests even if it means leaving people behind: Natalie left Minnesota to pursue comedy in NYC. Travis discusses leaving his religious upbringing to find "his people". Following your passion often means parting ways with some people from your past. The truth about loneliness and human connection: We are more digitally connected today yet often more lonely. Natalie emphasizes making relationships a priority, being open to new friendships, and not overly judging/labeling people. Go out, join groups, and meet people. Talk to strangers. How to collaborate with other creators: Natalie suggests reaching out through specific asks and ideas that add value, organically meeting people through your niche, and attending collab days to brainstorm content. Surround yourself with people pursuing similar interests. Do you ever feel like you don't quite fit in with the people around you? Are you pursuing big dreams that your current friends and family don't really understand? Well, you need to listen to Travis's inspirational chat with comedian Natalie Friedman to hear how she broke out of her small town in Minnesota to bravely pursue stand-up comedy and social media fame in the big cities of NYC and LA. Natalie offers real talk on pushing through rejection, collaborating with fellow creators, and the importance of human connection in this disconnected world. It's kind of a sweet spot if you, as a comedian, can have your day job also be in comedy. JoAnn Schinderle has managed to land there with being the Venue Manager at UCB Franklin in addition to being a wonderful stand-up in the LA scene (and even making some dough from commissioned erotic fiction). Switching gears between all three and whatever falls in between can be a challenge, which is why we talk to her all about how she pulls it off (as well as what's going on behind-the-scenes at Upright Citizens Brigade these days). Also, "hot"/hot takes on this year's Emmy nominees. Follow JoAnn @joann.schinderle on IG Produced by Jake Kroeger Music by Brian Granillo Artwork by Andrew Delman and Jake Kroeger

Joining us for this month’s discussion of Zachary Sergi’s Major Detours is Jessilee Windhaus, cofounder of local performing arts nonprofit, Empire Arts Collective. Listen in as we choose our own paths and share our thoughts on spirituality and mysticism, praise the casual queer representation in this book, and find out what makes us agree to fight to the death. Guest Host:Jessilee Windhaus (she/her) is a proud Sacramento native and twenty-year theatre and improv veteran who has trained with the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, The Groundlings, and toured with the world-renowned Missoula Children’s Theatre. Selena Coppock spent 15 years performing stand-up comedy, honing her skills, and appearing at comedy clubs in New York City, arguably one of the worlds' best cities for comedy. And then, shortly before she turned forty, it started to feel like the fun was gone. She wondered if there was anything left for her in comedy. But how do you walk away from a passion that you've spent 15 years working on? The onset of a global pandemic gave her the opportunity to take a break - and to rethink what made her happy. Twenty five year old Selena might think her a nerd, but forty year old Selena is pretty happy with how things are going. Guest BioSelena Coppock is a standup comedian, writer, author, and storyteller based in NYC. She is the creator and voice of @NYTVows, the parody Twitter and Instagram accounts that lampoon the New York Times Wedding section, the wedding industrial complex, WASPs, and courtship rituals of the rich and insufferable. She is also the creator and host of TWO WICK MINIMUM, America's favorite and only podcast about candles. In December 2017 she released her debut standup album, SEEN BETTER DAYS (Little Lamb Recordings) which hit #1 on the iTunes comedy chart. Selena was a guest star on the sitcom RED OAKS (Amazon) and has been seen on Bravo, Lifetime, VH1, CollegeHumor.com, RooftopComedy.com, and elsewhere. Turning 40 in Lockdown in NYCSelena turned 40 in April 2020 as the pandemic turned the world upside down. In January, her plan had been to throw a big, dress-up party at a private room in a bar for “toasts and light roasts.” She wanted to wear sequins and get all the people she loves together and celebrate. She works in publishing in NYC and they were sent home on March 11, after a case of Covid was reported in their building. Shortly thereafter, all plans, birthday and otherwise, went out the window. At the time, she lived in a 4th floor walkup in Park Slope. Even going out to get mail was scary. She didn't have any private outdoor space, so the fire escape became her way to be outdoors. She envied friends with backyards. She snuck up onto her building's roof because she needed to be in fresh air, but not around people, and that was difficult to navigate in NYC. Getting into Stand UpSelena grew up in Weston, Massachusetts and lived in South Boston for a few years after college, “as you're legally required to do.” She lived in Boston 2004-2006 and then moved to NYC. In college, she began to study improv, calling it a great onramp to comedy. After college, she moved to Chicago to study with Improv Olympic. She fell into a crippling depression and moved home and back in with her parents. That's when she started doing improv in Boston. And then, a friend was running a stand-up show where you could get 5 minutes. She tried it and, in classic beginner's luck, she crushed it. She was hooked. She says Boston is a great place to start in comedy. The audiences are smart. There's a lot of college kids who want to go out for cheap events. And it's a smaller market, so it's not like starting in New York or LA, where you could be terrible, and people who matter in your career could see you when you're terrible. She did stand up in Boston for 2 years and thought she was really “doing it,” but she was only performing about once a month. If you're serious about it, you have to perform every night. A confluence of events in Boston helped her make the jump to New York. She got laid off from a job; she felt like she was spinning her wheels in stand up and her Uncle Jimmy offered her an apartment for her first year or two in the city while she got her feet under her. She dove into the New York comedy scene, learning the hustle, and the community and who books what, and what's worth doing and what's a waste of time. It was a master class in comedy. She studied sketch writing and sketch comedy at Upright Citizen's Brigade. At night, after UCB shuts...
