“You're in acting class and you're studying Chekov or ‘Waiting for Godot' -- and then you end up doing 80s tits-and-a**… You caught on pretty quick what it was about and where the power lay.” -- Actress Heather ThomasWhat was it like to be an 80s poster icon and sex symbol? Susan and Sharon welcome The Fall Guy star and “80s Poster Lady” Heather Thomas. She's an actor, writer and activist -- but may be best known for her “Pink Bikini” poster, one of the best-selling pin-up posters of all time. Heather Thomas had leading roles in television shows like BJ and the Bear, The Love Boat and TJ Hooker -- as well as the movie Zapped! with Scott Baio, Willie Aames and Felice Schachter. But her most famous role was playing stuntwoman Jody Banks on the hit 80s television series The Fall Guy. Running for five seasons on ABC, The Fall Guy spawned board games, posters, a video game -- and just last year, a major feature film starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt -- and Heather Thomas! Since her days as a TV star and pin-up queen, Heather Thomas has gone on to an extraordinary career as a novelist, political activist, organizer and fund-raiser.  NOTE: This episode was recorded Dec. 2024, before the LA Fires. Our thoughts are with Heather and her family, and all those impacted by the fires. Stay safe. Be well. THE CONVERSATIONWORKING WITH MONKEYS: Clyde, the orangutan from Every Which Way But Loose, was her co-star once: “He thought it was funny to keep grabbing my boob. I thought he was gonna rip it off!” And a stint on BJ and the Bear led to producer Glen Larsen tapping her for the co-starring role in The Fall Guy. WORKING WITH TV PRODUCERS: “All of them are crazy. You're not gonna find any normal ones, not in those days. Everyone was nuts. And they still are.”"Smile more": Early on, the ABC network executives were afraid that Heather Thomas wasn't likable. So they put her in a bikini. “I guess that made up for me not smiling enough.” STUNT WORK: “Lee Majors almost broke my nose once.” "I was good on rollerskates!"In preparation for a Fall Guy episode, Heather trained with the Los Angeles Thunderbirds roller-derby team: “They showed me how to ‘break my back' on the rail -- it was really fun!”Ted Lange -- Isaac, the bartender on The Love Boat -- was one of Heather's favorite directors on the Fall Guy.A GOOD DIRECTOR: For Heather, it was someone who brought her into the filmmaking process. For Lee Majors -- it was anyone who got him home by 5:00pm! THE POSTER: Once the show was a hit, a poster was the next big step: “It outsold Farrah Fawcett. I bought a house. I was thrilled.”DIS-LIKENESS: Heather's image has been hi-jacked and used for everything from lighters, to puzzles, to notebook covers -- to a pillow!ON HAVING A FAMOUS BODY: “My body was my living. That's how I saw it.  So I had to feed it, exercise it -- I couldn't have an ounce of cellulite. It was part of the gig. But I didn't care, I was grateful. I was making more money than I ever had in my life. I was a kid.”ZAPPED! -- Teen sex comedy -- or sexual harassment?  “They tried to get me topless, but my contract said uh-uh!  So, they used a body double. There's a big disclaimer at the end of the movie saying that it's not my tits.”Activism: “Ever since they said, ‘You can't climb the tree, the boys can' -- I was a feminist.”So join Susan and Sharon -- and Heather -- as they talk fly-fishing, Star Wars, David Letterman,Teen Beat, Shaun Cassidy & Parker Stevenson, “Gabor-lore”, Cliff Robertson's toupeé, organizing your phone by decade, not complying in advance -- and canoeing with Henry Winkler!AUDIO-OGRAPHYFind Heather Thomas on Twitter at Twitter.com/HeatherThomasAF And find Heather Thomas on BlueSky at HeatherThomasAF.bsky.social Watch Heather Thomas in The Fall Guy on Peacock, Amazon Prime or Flixfling!Check DontGetPurged.org to make sure your name has not been purged from voter rolls!Find out more about CREW at CitizensForEthics.orgVITAL READINGGet Handbook for A Post-Roe America by Robin Marty at Bookshop.org.Check out Men In Dark Times by Hannah Ahrendt at Bookshop.org.Read Democracy Awakening by Heather Cox Richardson at Bookshop.org.You can also follow Richardson's substack.SUPPORT FOR THE LA FIRESOnline at DisasterAssistance.gov On the FEMA App for mobile devices or Call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362Calls are accepted every day from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. PST.More resources at Eaton Canyon Community Relief.Google List of LA County Resources. AIRBNB is offering temporary free housing for those displaced by the fires. Start here. PLACES TO VOLUNTEERGoogle Doc for Wednesday and ongoing.Volunteer with the Red Cross.TALK TO SOMEONEReach out to friends and family. Take care of yourself:Pro Bono Therapy for LA Wildfires - Google Doc. More mental health resources at LARevive.DONATINGMaster GoFundMe List for LA Fire Victims Google Doc.Displaced Black families in Altadena Google Doc. Gofundme pages for EATON CANYON COMMUNITY RELIEFCONNECTVisit 80sTVLadies.com for transcripts.Join the conversation at Facebook.com/80sTVLadies.Sign up for the 80s TV Ladies mailing list.Support us and get ad-free episodes on PATREON. In Honor of President Carter and to learn more about his presidency: Get Susan's new play about him and his Crisis of Confidence speech: Confidence (and the Speech) at Broadway Licensing.

Billy Preston [03:58] "Get Back" Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band RSO RS-2-4100 1978 So yeah. A soundtrack to a movie that is very much of it's time. Not only tdo we have The Bee Gees and Peter Framption as the titular band, we have Earth Wind & Fire doing "Got to Get You into My Life", George Burns doing "Fixing a Hole", Alice Cooper doing "Because", Aerosmith handling "Come Together", and my second favorite track: Steve Martin doing a wild and crazy version of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" (https://youtu.be/F__uGshlbOo?si=qn4U4_ZIGttfns5E). This version of Get Back by the one and only Billy Preston still seals the deal for me. If you are inclined to check out this film, I can only say that it is very much of its time (https://youtu.be/oioCI1p6Y30?si=34PQo_XspuXmnRPc). Lord only knows how much white powder was used in the production. Love and Rockets [07:01] "Haunted when the Minutes Drag" Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven Beggars Banquet BEGA66 1985 The debut outing from 3/4 of Bauhaus. Daniel Ash, David J, and Kevin Haskins do an excellent job of building an atmospheric experience to transition away from the darkness of their previous efforts. The Moody Blues [16:29] "You and Me" Seventh Soujourn Threshold THS 7 1972 Maybe it's me, but it seems like the intro could have been 8 bars or so shorter. True story: the first pair of concert tickets that I ever won from listening to the radio was for The Moody Blues on their Long Distance Voyager tour. For some reason my parents didn't think it would be appropriate for a 13 year old to go, so I got to keep the record (long since lost) and gave my tickets to the high school kids across the street. The Cars [20:46] "Since You're Gone" Shake It Up Elektra 5E-567 1981 Classic side one, track one. Dig the Frippian guitar solo. In every way imaginable, this "Naked Lunch" is a moving feast -- and a hilarious one, too. Teen sensation turned successful TV writer/producer Shaun Cassidy gets caught in traffic, and so thus this fun and freewheeling conversation begins with Shaun on the road. Phil, David and Shaun retrace Cassidy's remarkable life and career thus far, from growing up a Hollywood "nepo baby," the son of Oscar-winning legend Shirley Jones and actor Jack Cassidy, as well as the half-brother of David Cassidy, to becoming a stadium-packing "Teen Dream" with big pop hits like "Da Doo Ron Ron," "That's Rock 'n' Roll" and "Hey Deanie," to creating TV shows like "American Gothic," "Roar" and writing in recent years on the popular medical drama, "New Amsterdam." All this, plus Shaun tells a hugely funny story about Andy Warhol and how Oprah Winfrey and his wife Tracey helped set the stage for Shaun to return to the road after three decades for his acclaimed current touring show "The Magic of the Midnight Sky." Shaun also answers a star question sent by Kim Williams Paisley who helped set up this "Lunch," as well as taking a fan call from Monica's younger sister Jennifer Horan. Once again, we're arrived at the season finale. Will Ilan take his second crown, or will Keegan or Abhi upset the returning champion? To answer that, we'll need to start at the beginning, so it makes sense that we start round one with a game all about TV and movie prequels, put through the lens of a certain iconic butler. Then, it's the big game in round two where we'll identify not only some TV theme songs, but the other works of the iconic musicians responsible for them. And course, a lightning round! In this episode we welcome Sounds legends Sandy Robertson and Edwin (Savage Pencil) Pouncey into our Hammersmith lair and ask them about their careers and shared fascination with the occult. After describing their routes into writing and their days at Sounds, Sandy and Edwin reflect on the dark history of occult rock from Black Widow to Norway's Black Metal scene, via Jimmy Page, Kenneth Anger and Aleister "the Beast" Crowley. Clips from the late Andy Gill's 1990 audio interview with Liberty/United Artists executive Andrew Lauder give us an opportunity to honour the Hartlepool-born facilitator of musical freakiness and discuss the many acts he signed and/or A&R'd over the course of 50 years, from Hawkwind and the Groundhogs to the Stranglers and the Stone Roses. After saying our goodbyes to reggae sound-system operator Jah Shaka and small-trio jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, Mark and Jasper run through their highlights among recent additions to the RBP library, including pieces about Nancy Sinatra (1967), the Eagles (1972) and Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly (1993)... and a 2011 tribute to hip hop star Dwight "Heavy D" Myers. Many thanks to special guests Edwin Pouncey and Sandy Robertson. In fact, this famous actor from Hollywood's golden age will be your babysitter. From the spooky car ride up a narrow driveway in Benedict Canyon to the creaky opening of the front door that reveals an elderly James Cagney, you are captivated! The star of The Public Enemy, Yankee Doodle Dandy, White Heat, Mister Roberts, and many other Hollywood classics is nothing like you'd expect. He's not brash; he's not a killer; he isn't loud and he doesn't sing and dance. He is quiet and gentle and full of imagination. In one afternoon away from the pressures of a perfectionist father, you relax and fall under the spell of a wonderful babysitter who makes you feel special and encourages you to enter an imaginary world where leprechauns come to life and owls speak to you from the trees. Hours later, you leave James Cagney's house changed from a timid child into an enthusiastic young man who's infused with self-confidence and ready for life's next adventure. Ryan Cassidy is the youngest of the Cassidy brothers and is often placed into context with brothers David Cassidy (half-brother), Shaun Cassidy and Patrick Cassidy or parents Shirley Jones and the late Jack Cassidy. At first, Ryan was unswayed by the lure of show business and considered a career in law enforcement. Johnny Ray Miller, a native of Canton, Ohio, has been an aficionado of the Partridge Family television program and their recorded music from the show's beginnings. Miller is a concert and theatre producer, actor and director.

Today on part one of the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking actor/musician/SAG-AFTRA VP David Jolliffe about growing up in Hollywood. You might remember David from his early work on the show Room 222 as Bernie (yes, the guy with the mass of red hair). You also might know David from one of his hundred plus commercials he's been in. Or perhaps you know his from his voice over/looping work on shows like Devlin. Well, maybe not Devlin, David didn't even remember that one. Regardless, David give us the lowdown on growing up the son of actress Glorya Lord who starred in shows like Mannix & The Doris Day Show and television executive Richard Jolliffe. Our conversation brings up the world he inhabited as a youth, a young adult and all the way through to now. David has fun and fascinating stories about everyone from Bruno Kirby and Michael Constantine to Sheryl Lee Ralph and Bruce Dern. We even get to talk about old school and long gone Sunset Strip restaurant Scandia where his dad frequented. It's a wild ride of SAG/AFTRA inner workings, his close friendship and musical partnerships with Billy Mumy and Shaun Cassidy, his time in and founding the infamous Hollywood Vampires as well as the kindness of Alice Cooper. Kathleen opens the show drinking a Warbeard Irish Red Ale from Walnut River Brewing. She's excited to tell the Termites about her recent show in Salina Kansas with her teen idol, Shaun Cassidy, who turned out to be a wonderful person. She reviews her breakfast “Screwdriver Slush” from Spangles restaurant and stopped at the Wizard of Oz Museum in Wamego, KS on her way back home to Missouri. Kathleen then describes the events of Father's Day weekend at Lake of the Ozarks, participating in the annual Father's Day golf tournament with her dad and sister. “GOOD BAD FOOD”: In her quest for new and delicious not-so-nutritious junk food AND in continuing her search for the best Ranch, Kathleen samples Wishbone Champagne Vinaigrette dressing, which she thinks is WAY too sweet and tangy. She moves on to sample Ranch Wheat Thins, which she doesn't think taste at ALL like Ranch. She finishes her tasting with Kansas's own Art's & Mary's Tater Chips, which she thinks have fantastic crunch and flavor. QUEEN'S COURT: Kathleen updates the Termites on the activities of the queens: Queen Dolly has given $1M to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital for pediatric infectious diseases research, Stevie Nicks closed out Bonnaroo Sunday night and finishing this leg of her tour, and Chaka Khan and Queen Tanya Tucker are both having a blast out on tour. UPDATES: Kathleen gives updates on the stolen Hollywood chimp found in a Missouri basement, Russia's new McDonalds roll-out, Russian superyacht Amadea is confiscated in Fiji, McDonald's dumps the McPlant burger, Anna Delvey mints 2,000 NFT's to sell, and Kathleen digs further into Teal Swan's beginnings and marketing platform. “HOLY SHIT THEY FOUND IT”: Kathleen is amazed to read about the discovery of the “The Depiction of the Madonna and Child,” Renaissance-era painting in a 90-year-old woman's London bedroom, and the origin of the Black Death in northern Kyrgyzstan, and a woolly mammoth tusk was found off the banks of Alaska's Koyukuk River.FAKING JOAN OF ARC: Kathleen laughs while reading an article about a Medieval woman who made a living pretending to be Joan of Arc. Claude des Armoises's ploy lasted four years, earned her a great deal of cash—and almost ensnared the King of France himself.ARMADILLOS CONTINUE THEIR MARCH: Kathleen is fascinated to watch the migration of armadillos in the US, so much so that she talks about it in her act. She reads an article about the mystery behind this migration, as Armadillos have now been seen as north as Virginia. SAFEST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD: Kathleen reads the 2022 list of Safest Countries in the World, with Iceland taking the top spot this year. GAME STOP WALK-OUT: Kathleen is amused reading an article about mass walk-outs by GameStop employees, citing unhealthy work conditions. GEICO ORDERED TO PAY WHEN STD CONTRACTED IN A CAR: Kathleen shakes her head in disbelief when reading an article advising that a Missouri woman was awarded $5.2 million in a settlement from insurance company GEICO after contracting a sexually transmitted disease from her partner in his vehicle, which was insured by the company, court documents show.THE AMERICAN WHO INVENTED THE DONUT: Kathleen shares the story of Maine mariner Captain Hanson Gregory, who as a teenage galley boy, turned a poorly cooked blob of sailors' sustenance into the iconic, ring-shaped, and deep-fried delicacy we know and love today. Karen talks about her all-things Tiki obsession, which evolved into a Gilligan's Island obsession. Robbie-Ann asks, and Karen answers, the tough questions: how did they get years out of that radio battery? Why didn't they build a boat? Where did they get all those wardrobe changes from just a three-hour tour (a threeee hour tour...)? Amy talks about her after-school joy watching Gilligan's Island, and her love for the vibrant colors on the show. Karen and Robbie-Ann reminisce about getting off the kindergarten bus at Karen's house and spending the afternoon on the Island. Amy reveals the shocking world tragedy event that occurred on the day the cast were filming the pilot episode, and how you can see a reference to it in the original opening sequence. Amy goes on to describe Sherwood Schwartz' origins of the show, as something of a political statement. Shocker: when Schwartz first conceived the series, the seven characters originally represented the Seven Deadly Sins. Can you identify who was which? The Girls discuss. Karen reveals her favorite episode, featuring the fictional Beatle-esque band the Mosquitos. The Girls dissect the Honey Bees' (Ginger, Mary Ann and Mrs. Howell) song "You Need Us." Naturally this leads to discussing the iconic tv Gilligan's Island theme song, and Karen reveals a crazy fact about the Wellingtons, who sang it. Amy reveals that the original pilot's Calypso theme song was co-written by none other than Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones and E.T. composer John Williams. BUT - then Amy also reveals what Christmas classic was written by George Wyle, who co-wrote the historic "Just sit right back..." theme song that ended up in the show. Amy reports the five basic plot lines that covered almost all of the episodes. Gilligan's opera-radio reception in his teeth. The Dream Sequence episodes. Trivia: The Skipper's real name. The Professor's real name. Mrs. Howell's maiden name. Which cast member was the only one allowed by Sherwood Schwartz to improvise? The 1978  "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" tv movie. Casting Could-have-beens: could Jane Mansfield have been Ginger? Tina Louise, "method actor." The old Ginger vs. Mary Ann debate. Gilligan's first name: a controversy.
