After inventing the Hollywood blockbuster with Jaws, creating the world's most loveable alien with E.T., and resurrecting the classic adventure serial with the Indiana Jones franchise, of course the next logical step in Steven Spielberg's career was to…adapt Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize winning novel about the survival and strength of queer black women in the American south? Duh! Obviously! Comedian Kenice Mobley joins us to talk about 1985's truly baffling and seismically important The Color Purple in our latest episode. She talks about how she launched her full time comedy career right during February 2020. She talks about how there are many pitfalls with comedians where a lot of them can be chasing the viral clips. And how the going viral skill is not the same as the entertaining skill. She talks about how doing comedy well comes from having lots of experience, and you don't need to just be born into it.IN < TWO WEEKS!!Check out her show: "Don't Kill Yourself Yet" @ Caveat [BLACK WOMEN IN COMEDY FESTIVAL]Thursday, February 27, 20257:00 PM 8:30 PMhttps://caveat.nyc/events/kenice-mobley-dont-kill-yourself-yet-2-27-2025Follow her here:Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/kenicemobley/?hl=enFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/kenicemobleycomedy/Her website:https://kenicemobley.com/Check out her upcoming Stand Up Shows:https://kenicemobley.com/stand-up-shows?view=calendar&month=02-2025
In this raw, hilarious, and deeply honest episode of "We're Done Here", comedian Kenice Mobley sits down with Meka Mo to unpack her journey from dark EMO dreams of joining the 27 Club to surviving a stroke at 36 and finding clarity on the other side. Together, they delve into the intersection of comedy and personal pain, how Kenice turned her struggles into a laugh-out-loud performance, and what it really takes to rewrite your story when life doesn't go as planned. It's a conversation about death, survival, and the punchlines that keep us going. Are you ready to be done here? Grab your headphones, hit play, and get ready to laugh, cry, and learn. It's a heavy week as we bury another Black person murdered by law enforcement. Say it with us, “It's not bad apples, it's a system of oppression.” So this week, the Feminist Buzzkills are breaking down how justice is also NOT being served for violence committed against abortion providers and patients. From a 72-year-old clinic escort being assaulted by an anti-abortion, misogynistic henchman who was found NOT GUILTY (shocker!) to toxic trans vaginal probes and vending machines with morning-after pills, we're spilling ALL THE ABOBO TEA. As always, we're joined by fellow badasses who are tearing the patriarchy apart and protecting uteruses around the world on the daily! Diana Parker Kafka, executive director of Midwest Access Coalition (and Marie's boss, shhh don't tell her, this is her annual performance review!). Since the Dobbs decision has decimated abortion access, we will hear how one Midwest abortion fund has had to become a resource for abortion patients nationwide. Diana's here to drop all these facts and chat about how they are navigating their work in this critical time. PLUS! Hi-larious comedian, Kenice Mobley, is supplying the laughs. Fresh from her appearance on “The Tonight Show,” she's blabbing it up with us about her new comedy album “Follow Up Question,” how she really feels about the stank, steaming hot BULLSH*T that's been going down in the world, cumming in jars, why we should all take up baking bread, and the life and death experience that changed her forever. The world is heavy. So, take a deep breath and fill your ear holes with the ONLY weekly podcast hosted and produced by activists who work in the abortion movement!
