There are not many people who have spent time in prison for their commitment to help animals, but Tom Harris is one of them. We spoke with Tom about his time in the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty campaign (SHAC), one of the most well-known animal rights campaigns of the last 20-30 years. We speak about why he thinks the campaign was so effective in applying pressure to companies, things he would do differently, common misconceptions about the SHAC campaign and the importance of grassroots advocacy in the animal rights movement. We also spend a bit of time talking about his future plans for rebuilding the grassroots advocacy scene in the UK so stick around to the end for some exciting plans.Resources: Your Neighbour Kills Puppies: Tom HarrisSHAC Justice Site - The campaign to have the convictions appealedContact InformationEmail Contact for SHAC Justice00:00:00:00 | Intro00:02:14:01 | A recent mistake others can learn from00:04:46:18 | SHAC (Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty)00:12:02:22 | Lord Sainsbury00:16:11:20 | Secondary Targeting00:19:19:18 | Misconceptions about SHAC00:24:55:18 | Losing local activist groups00:35:17:05 | Lessons learned from SHAC campaign00:38:18:09 | Prison sentence00:46:32:17 | Benefit of focusing on one target00:54:04:04 | Future work with local groups01:09:57:05 | The SHAC Justice Campaign01:19:28:21 | Closing questionsIf you enjoy the show, please leave a rating and review us - we would really appreciate it! In our latest episode, Scott talks with Josh Davidson (@certaindays) co-editor of "Rattling the Cages," about his new oral history of political prisoners in North America. Josh, along with co-editor Eric King, has put together over 35 interviews of political prisoners and former political prisoners. From members of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Front to whistle-blower Chelsea Manning to members of SHAC and the Earth Liberation Front, the book dives into life on the inside for people with radical politics. We hope to capture a bit of that in the interview. Bio// Josh Davidson is an abolitionist who is involved in numerous projects, including the Certain Days collective that publishes the annual Freedom for Political Prisoners calendar and the Children's Art Project with political prisoner Oso Blanco. Josh also works in communications with the Zinn Education Project, which promotes the teaching of radical people's history in classrooms and provides free lessons and resources for educators. Note to listeners: this episode was prerecorded in September 2022. The cost of living scandal could force 1.7 million households into homelessness this winter, according to the charity Crisis. In the UK, we can no longer rely on social housing to protect people from sleeping rough or sofa-surfing. If you were alive in 1979, you had a 40% chance of living in an affordable council home. Today, that figure is just under 8%. What happened to all our council houses? Did Thatcher's right to buy policy create the housing crisis we see today? And how would our lives be different if we could depend on warm, comfortable social homes? In the past ten years, we've also seen state repression of movements coming out of Occupy Wall Street, the Ferguson uprising, Standing Rock, Line 3 and various anti-Trump movements. Green and Red has had numerous episodes on radical movements and state repression of political movements from antifascists in Portland and Austin to water protectors at Line 3 to DAPL saboteur Jessica Reznicek. But, before that, we had the era known as the "Green Scare," where radical environmental and animal rights activists were targeted by the "state" (corporations, politicians, law enforcement) for its anti-capitalist politics and escalating tactics that included sabotage, animal liberation, property destruction and arson. The FBI called their operation to stop these radical movements “Operation Backfire.” After 911, they labeled people taking action "domestic terrorists." Congress passed corporate lobbyist written legislation, such as the Animal Enterprise Terror Act and the Patriot Act, to stop them. In our latest episode, we talk with Daniel McGowan (@thetinyraccoon), an anarchist organizer, Earth Liberation Front (ELF) member and partisan during the Green Scare era. He was part of two ELF actions in 2001. After another ELF member turned informant, he was arrested by the FBI and charged with arson, property destruction and conspiracy. In June, 2007, McGowan was sentenced to seven years in federal prison and given a "terror enhancement" for his actions. Most of his time in prison was spent in a secret prison unit called a Communication Management Unit. Daniel tells us about his journey as a radical environmentalist, actions with the ELF, time in federal prison and, now, supporter of political prisoners. Daniel McGowan is a former political prisoner and former member of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF). He spent 48 months in experimental Communication Management Units operated by the federal Bureau of Prisons during his seven year sentence. Daniel has been involved with political prisoner support and prison struggles for most of his activist life. He is currently a member of the Certain Days collective, NYC Books Through Bars and the Anarchist Black Cross Federation (ABCF). Daniel works on the campaign to defend and free anarchist political prisoner Eric King and is an advisory board member of the Civil Liberties Defense Center (CLDC) & the Coalition for Civil Freedoms. Daniel is a lifelong New Yorker and grew up in Far Rockaway, Queens, NYC. He works professionally as a paralegal and consults with people preparing to go to prison and their family & friends in setting up defense committees. --------------------------------------- Outro// Catharsis "Arsonist's Prayer" Links// Daniel's Linktree: https://linktr.ee/tinyraccoon G&R: Dakota Access Pipeline Saboteur Jessica Reznicek Sentenced to Prison (https://bit.ly/FreeJessRGandR) G&R: The Story of SHAC (https://bit.ly/StorySHACGandR) Follow Green and Red// https://linktr.ee/greenandredpodcast Check out our new website: https://greenandredpodcast.org/ Join our Discord Party: https://bit.ly/36hqx7X Donate to Green and Red Podcast// Become a recurring donor at https://www.patreon.com/greenredpodcast Or make a one time donation here: https://bit.ly/DonateGandR This is a Green and Red Podcast (@PodcastGreenRed) production. Shonali Bhowmik is a musician, actress, comedienne, filmmaker, writer with a law degree! Her bio is extensive, but here's a taste of what she's involved with mostly right now—she co-hosts her own live variety show podcast series called We Don't Even Know AND she is the leader of the indie rock band Tigers and Monkeys for which she is the songwriter, singer, and guitar player. I learned so much from this session with Shonali. She creates purely from the need to create and grow. I kicked the emotional tires and she honestly just seems like a naturally happy, yet driven creative person, self-motivated—with a key ingredient—HARD WORK! Oh and a great family, which she appreciates. Further Bio: She is a member of the popular comedy collective Variety Shac, with Chelsea Peretti, Heather Lawless and Andrea Rosen. Shonali was the host of the Shac's popular Upright Citizen's Brigade live show. She has also created television pilots for the Adult Swim and IFC networks. She wrote and directed the short film, Sardines Out Of A Can which was screened in 6 cities across the globe including Madrid, Spain; Bangalore, India and won best romantic comedy short at the Bare Bones International Film Fest 2014. She has her own independent music and comedy record label called Little Lamb Recordings. She was one of the leaders of Ultrababyfat who was featured in David Cross' tour DVD Let America Laugh. Shonali has released eight albums including her solo full length release 100 Oaks Revival and those with her rock n' roll outfits,Tigers and Monkeys and Ultrababyfat. Tigers and Monkeys' newest album Saturday Destroyer was released in September 2018. Shonali can be seen in the feature length romantic comedy, Isn't It Romantic which was released in February 2019. The Asheville art scene is on fire, and the city is well-known for its support of artists and creators of all kinds. Joining us today from the heart of the Southeast art world are Bob Ware and Louise Glickman, of Sand Hill Artists Collective (SHAC), a group that looks to support the art community on the far West side of Asheville. In this episode, we hear about the history of the city, and what drew Bob and Louise to live there. Having both worked as artists, Bob and Louise understand what it is like to struggle to put yourself out there, and, as such, they hope to create supportive communities where everyone can share knowledge and experiences. We talk about gentrification in the city, how it is relatively unaffected by climate change, and its deep relationship with storytelling. Bob and Louise also share the incredible work SHAC has managed to do in just over a year and how marrying the digital and art worlds spans boundaries and creates infinite connections. We are so grateful that SHAC holds the same values as us, here at Not Real Art, and this is the first of many collaborations. Tune in to hear it all! Key Points From This Episode: Where Louise and Bob are originally from and how they ended up in Asheville. The influence that Moog has had on the city. A brief history of Asheville and the role it has played in broader U.S history. So many of the Asheville population are not native to the city. The impetus for starting SHAC and what the collective hopes to achieve. Why the reluctance to create digital art experiences should be worked past. How Asheville is dealing with gentrification given that more people are moving there. Climate change in Asheville: how the city will fare compared to the rest of the country. Details about the gallery tour SHAC hosted and what it was about. The understanding that Bob and Louise bring, being artists themselves. Similar values that SHAC and Not Real Art share. Why Louise was drawn to Asheville, having grown up in New Orleans. The rich history of storytelling in the mountainous area of Asheville. The power of art in fostering connection and bridging divides. How the pandemic has affected different people's creative outputs. What moving to Asheville did for Bob and Louise's creative practice. Why asking photographers about the gear they use isn't a compliment, according to Bob. Hear more about ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. The parallels between Bob and Louise's work; their love for simplicity. Final words from Louise and Bob and where you can get hold of them. Texas law states that sex education is optional and gives local control to parents of each district through a SHAC. If the Texas School Board approves these sex education standards then sex education essentially becomes mandated via the education standards. This conflicts with State law and takes local control away from parents. In this episode, host Dave Fiore speaks with Shacafrica Simmons, better known as Chef Shac. Born in South Florida and the oldest of 11 total siblings, she is an entrepreneur at heart with multiple brands under her Chef Shac, LLC, umbrella. Before earning two degrees from culinary school, she tried her hand at barbering school and midwifery after a challenging pregnancy. But it was food and how to use it to lift spirits and create opportunity for others that turned out to be her true passion. And it didn't hurt that her unique blend of southern, soul and Bahamian influences has proven to be a winning recipe. In 2017, she defeated three other chefs on Food Network's popular show, Chopped. Even with that success, however, the mom of three still struggles to work out the best way to successfully monetize her talents, experience and heart for the community. Focused primarily on catering and events, her business has been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic and her professional future remains uncertain. But she has a smile that you can hear and faith that God still has big plans for her life.

Her first band Ultrababyfat toured with David Cross on the "Let America Laugh" tour, and is a member of the comedy group Variety SHAC with Andrea Rosen, Chelsea Peretti and Heather Lawless. Shonali's also the leader of the indie rock band Tigers and Monkeys and she has her own solo album out entitles 100 Oaks Revival. On top of that, she's the co-host of her own podcast We Don't Even Know. Also, she's an awesome person! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
