The thought of your teen making a life-altering mistake because of alcohol is terrifying. We know that underage drinking can lead to devastating consequences, from impaired driving accidents to the dangerous combination of alcohol with other drugs. But here's the thing—these tragedies are entirely preventable. To help us navigate this tough topic, I'm joined by Stacey D. Stewart, CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Stacey is going to share how we, as parents, can address this fear, take action, and keep our teens safe from the dangers of drinking.   Key Takeaways ➡️ Underage drinking and impaired driving are still major issues with devastating consequences. ➡️ Parents play a crucial role in preventing underage drinking and impaired driving by having open and ongoing conversations with their children. ➡️ Providing information and resources to children helps them make informed decisions and understand the dangers of alcohol and substance use. ➡️ Parents should model responsible behavior and seek help if their child is struggling with substance use. Meet Today's Guest: Stacey D. Stewart Stacey D. Stewart is the CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).  For more than 25 years, Stacey has served in purpose-driven roles including President and CEO of the Fannie Mae Foundation, U.S. President and Executive Vice President for Community Impact Leadership and Learning at United Way Worldwide (UWW), and most recently the President and CEO of March of Dimes. Stewart is a graduate of the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan where she earned an MBA in Finance and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Georgetown University and holds numerous honorary degrees. You are listening to a special episode of the Sisters in Loss Podcast.  As many of my US listeners know next Tuesday, November 7, 2023 is Election Day and Midterm elections, and we have the power to change and shift the paradigm of maternal and infant mortality in America with our vote.  In today's episode I sit down with March of Dimes President Stacey D. Stewart to discuss their Blanket Change Campaign launched on October 10, 2017, and why our vote matters in this election, why the maternal death rate is getting worse as technology advances, and how working together with March of Dimes gives all new moms a better chance to be there for their babies. Stacey D. Stewart joined March of Dimes as its fifth President on January 1, 2017, and first African American President.  In this role, Stewart heads the organization leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies. She is responsible for all aspects of the organization's strategy, vision and operations. She has moved on from this role but her impact still lives on to saving the lives of Black moms and babies. The maternal death rate in America has doubled in just twenty five years, and it's only getting worse. More than 700 moms died due to pregnancy-related causes this year alone, making the United States the most dangerous developed nation to have a newborn baby. Women of color are most at risk of facing life-threatening complications, and black women are three times as likely as white women to die from pregnancy-related causes. Stacey D. Stewart is the CEO of the March of Dimes. In my first podcast with Stacey back in May, I was surprised to learn that the U.S. is one of the most dangerous countries for women to be pregnant and give birth. I was also surprised to hear how doctors' implicit biases, make this even more true for women of color, even when accounting for income, education and other socio-economic factors.  Our first conversation happened before the murder of George Floyd and all that has followed since. Our national conversation around the BLM movement, implicit bias, systemic racism, white privilege and social justice is very polarized and heated. Many (white) people understandably recoil at the accusation that they are biased or "privileged" when they certainly don't feel that way. So, I wanted to reconnect with Stacey to see if she could help us better understand what implicit bias is, how it affects all of us, and what we can do about it.   Understanding how implicit and systemic bias affects even the most well-meaning doctors-- doctors who have dedicated their lives to serving pregnant women and bringing life into this world-- might make the topic a little less threatening to those of us who don't want to think of ourselves as biased. It can help us come to terms with the fact that we are all biased-- not for the sake of making any of us feel bad, but for the sake of recognizing and overcoming our biases. This is an important conversation. Big thanks to Stacey for sharing so much with us. #EveryMileMatters!

In honor of Mother's Day, I'm tremendously honored to share this podcast with Stacey Stewart, CEO of March of Dimes, one of our newest charity partners. When we started working with March of Dimes, I was very surprised to learn that the United States is one of the most dangerous countries to be pregnant and give birth. Which is why Stacey and March of Dimes are leading the charge in fighting for the health of all moms and babies. In this slightly rainy (and hilly) interview, Stacy and I talk about the March of Dimes' history, how they solved the problem of the polio virus, and how they're now fighting for maternal health, both scientifically and systemically. It's also worth noting that March of Dimes pioneered the idea of walking for charity. That's why they're called the March of Dimes... In other words, they're the original Charity Miles! Thanks to Stacey and her team for the opportunity to support their mission. Congrats to Stacey for earning her 101 Mile Club T-Shirt during this interview! And of course, Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there. Please do some Charity Miles for March of Dimes today! #EveryMileMatters #EveryMomMatters -Gene
