Besides warning our kids about the spiritual and legal issues related to underage drinking, we must also warn them about the damage that underage drinking does to their still not-fully-formed brains. In today's world, more and more kids are engaging in binge drinking. That is, consuming five or more drinks in a period of two hours. Researchers have now found conclusive evidence that drinking during adolescence can lead to structural damages in the brain that can easily result in memory and cognitive deficits that can persist into adulthood. In other words, drinking as a child or teen can effect the brain even if the person stops drinking as they go through life. Parents, talk to your kids about the dangers of drinking, and encourage them to be good stewards who care for their God-given bodies. Warn them about the dangers of exposure to high doses of alcohol during their adolescent years. What they choose to do now can and will affect them for the rest of their lives.
The thought of your teen making a life-altering mistake because of alcohol is terrifying. We know that underage drinking can lead to devastating consequences, from impaired driving accidents to the dangerous combination of alcohol with other drugs. But here's the thing—these tragedies are entirely preventable. To help us navigate this tough topic, I'm joined by Stacey D. Stewart, CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Stacey is going to share how we, as parents, can address this fear, take action, and keep our teens safe from the dangers of drinking. Key Takeaways ➡️ Underage drinking and impaired driving are still major issues with devastating consequences. ➡️ Parents play a crucial role in preventing underage drinking and impaired driving by having open and ongoing conversations with their children. ➡️ Providing information and resources to children helps them make informed decisions and understand the dangers of alcohol and substance use. ➡️ Parents should model responsible behavior and seek help if their child is struggling with substance use. Meet Today's Guest: Stacey D. Stewart Stacey D. Stewart is the CEO of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). For more than 25 years, Stacey has served in purpose-driven roles including President and CEO of the Fannie Mae Foundation, U.S. President and Executive Vice President for Community Impact Leadership and Learning at United Way Worldwide (UWW), and most recently the President and CEO of March of Dimes. Stewart is a graduate of the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan where she earned an MBA in Finance and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Georgetown University and holds numerous honorary degrees. She has been a director on more than 40 non-profit boards, nationally, and in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Stewart also serves on the boards of Hologic, Inc., a medical technology company focused on women's health and PennyMac Mortgage Investment Trust, a residential real estate investment trust. Sadly, alcohol use and abuse has been seen as a normal rite of passage for kids over the course of several generations. But do you know that aside from the moral and spiritual reasons to be concerned, there are a host of other reasons to be concerned about kids using alcohol? The folks at drugfree.org list the following reasons for concern. First, alcohol does damage to a teenager's developing brain. Second, alcohol use leads to risky behaviors. Third, teens run the risk of drinking and driving while impaired, a habit that can end lives and change families forever. Fourth, alcohol use contributes to poor mental health and is a significant factor in youth suicide. Fifth, alcohol use can lead to chronic health problems. Sixth, there is the danger of alcohol poisoning, which can be fatal. And finally, there is always the risk of addiction. Parents, you have the greatest influence on your kids beliefs and the resulting behaviors. Warn them about the dangers of alcohol use, and set up clear boundaries.
Jack reflects on his experience with alcohol addiction, beginning with a seemingly innocent encounter with alcohol at a party with friends during high school. He recalls getting caught drinking for the first time by his parents, and then using alcohol to cope with the pandemic-induced lack of social connection and activities. As Jack's addiction progressed, he began to drink heavily and got into encounters with the police. Jack's parents (interviewed in last week's Recovery Matters Podcast) were by his side, offering support and help, which played a vital role in his recovery.
RECORDED VIA ZOOM.Zac and Jane Jones chat candidly on The Simone Feiler Podcast about their journey with their co-authored book Why the Fallen? How the real-life story came to be written and how, through extreme difficulties, including a prison sentence, it brought the mother and son closer together and on a quest to help other people. Here's the blurb on the story:This brutally honest true story of an everyday Aussie kid and his mother is a wake up call.Co-authored by mother and son, this cautionary tale shares how and why an educated, intelligent teenager from a loving family with the world at his feet, ended up falling so badly he found himself in prison. The honest, raw account of a young man's life spiraling so terribly out of control, the reality of the consequences, and the retrospect now in play, sheds a glaring light on how lives can be forever changed, or worst still lost, through binge-drinking, drug abuse and driving under the influence. Despite the sometimes-fractured relationship and the reality of the circumstances they found themselves in, this mother and son deliver a harrowing side by side account of how their lives went from top of the world to rock-bottom.Why The Fallen? gives us belief that even when all appears lost, 'Hope Springs Eternal', relationships can be mended and lives can be changed for the better. Every parent should put this book in the hands of their teenager, before they get their licence, experiment with drugs or succumb to the culture of binge-drinking. Every young person should put this book in the hands of their parents, to share the emotional rollercoaster and often misguided beliefs facing young people of today.Find out more about Zac and Jane Jones here.Get Why The Fallen audiobook here. What's your story?I'd love to chat!Contact me here. What's your story?I'd love to chat!Contact me here.
We all know what it's like to get caught in a negative cycle with our kids. They break the rules, we crack down, they retaliate, then the whole thing happens over and over again. All we want is to keep the peace, but it feels impossible when teens constantly test our boundaries and nerves! The truth is, it's not easy to implement discipline and still maintain a positive relationship with teens. We want to set rules, but we don't want teens to think we're suspicious of them. We want to maintain authority without being a tyrant. How can we keep our close bond with teens while enforcing the rules? To find out, we're talking to Darby Fox, author of Rethinking Your Teenager: Shifting from Control and Conflict to Structure and Nurture to Raise Accountable Young Adults. Darby is a child and adolescent family psychologist with a private practice in Connecticut. She has over 20 years of experience working with families, and is here to help us take a new approach to our communication with teens. In our interview, Darby and I are discussing why we need to understand our kids' mindsets, why parents should rethink the sex talk, and how we can enforce discipline without sacrificing our relationship with our kids.

Parenting teens can be tricky as their sons and daughters push for independence, and sometimes venture into potentially dangerous activities such as binge drinking. Sadly, their judgment does not quite match their courage or yearning to push limits. Today's guest, Barry Adkins, received the call no parent wants to receive after his son Kevin's untimely death one evening after drinking with friends. Barry is sounding the alarm for parents and teens to increase awareness of the dangers of binge drinking.Learn more about Barry at www.kevinslastwalk.com. Guest: Barry Adkins

The Partnership To End Addiction recently issued a warning regarding the growing number of sweet and inexpensive alcoholic beverages that have been hitting the market over the last several months. With the arrival of summer comes increased marketing for these drinks as people head out for vacations and visits to the beach. Many of these drinks have a high alcohol content that's masked by tasty fruit flavors and brightly colored packaging. This and fancy marketing campaigns makes them especially attractive to young drinkers, like our teenagers. Parents, you need to be aware of this trend and warn your kids about the dangers associated with alcohol consumption. The most recent data reports that by the time they reach the 12th grade, over fifty-five percent of students have consumed alcohol in the last year, and seventeen percent have had five or more drinks in a row within the last two weeks. Talk openly with your kids about the temptations they face, and remind them that God promises a way out.

Listen to this speech I wrote for the students at a large, racially and economically diverse high school after they experienced a series of brazen and dangerous incidents of alcohol abuse. We can't convince all adolescents to abstain from alcohol, but we can convince them to make drinking a choice with two acceptable answers. Let's reduce peer pressure and increase mutual respect. Maybe we should give our teens the chance to make the right choice when drinking alcohol isn't an expectation. If you would like to talk about speaking opportunites, please contact me at matt@SoberAndUnashamed.com, or visit my Outspoken website.

The first alcoholic drink is consumed at an average age of 12 in the USA. The earlier drinking begins, the greater risk of addiction and greater potential harm is to brain development. The human brain is not fully developed until around age 25. What can we do to protect our teens for binge drinking? It is estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition and about 24,000 people die every day of hunger. 5% of America's leftovers could feed 4 million people for a day. What else do we waste in America? Water, paper, everything. Santa had it right when his presents came in recycled newspaper. Cynthia Brian and Heather Brittany look at the enormous amount of waste in our country with ideas on what we can do about it. This week people who celebrate get busy making sure that their homes are festive and bright. Find out what the GoddessGals have planned that could spark your ideas.

Dr. Brown’s talk is part of the “Degrees of Freedom” public lecture series sponsored by the Division of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego.
