Welcome to episode 47 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Kiran Handa Gaudioso, CEO, United Way of Northern New Jersey and President of United for ALICE. ALICE means asset, limited, income, constrained, employed. We start off the interview talking about boxes to check when it comes to ethnicity as Kiran was born to a Dad who is from India and a Mom who is Irish and grew up in NJ. She shares more on what it is like to be born into a mixed family. Kiran has served as Chief Operating Officer since 2017, following four years as the organization's Senior Vice President of Community Impact and Community Relations. She has overseen strategic planning for how the organization fulfills its mission of improving life for ALICE and those in poverty at the local, state, and national level including, United for ALICE. This research-based initiative with United Ways in 24 states provides a comprehensive study of households that earn above the poverty level, but less than a basic cost of living. At the United Way, Kiran oversees an annual budget of $8.2M and a staff team of 50.  Over the past year, she led the establishment of the ALICE Recovery Fund and the creation of an innovative childcare pilot, United in Care.  She was asked by Governor Murphy to co-chair the Third Sector Advisory Council to work with public sector leaders across the state to develop relief, recovery, and re-imagination strategies to support ALICE.  Prior to joining United Way, Kiran served as interim CEO and Vice President of Program Operations at New Jersey After 3, the public-private partnership that worked to provide safe, quality after-school and expanded learning time programs for 15,000 public school students in New Jersey. During her nine years with New Jersey After 3, Kiran created and managed a professional development system for 6,000 after-school program directors, site managers, and staff. She also oversaw the organization's annual grant application process involving more than 100 after-school programs. Kiran developed programmatic and operational management expertise while serving as director of Mentoring, Volunteerism & Enrichment Programs at Sponsor For Educational Opportunity. There, she led the development of a mentoring program designed to help New York City teens reach their academic, personal, and career potential. Early in her career, as a policy adviser under former Governor James Florio in the New Jersey Governor's Office of Volunteerism, Kiran was instrumental in establishing AmeriCorps in New Jersey. During this episode Kiran and I talk about many different topics including the evolution of her career, the continued passion she has for the incredible work she is doing to help the underserved in NJ, current events, the stress of being a working parent, and the importance of focusing on grace. This was a great conversation about fulfillment and finding balance when it comes to making a difference in the work that you do every day.  Next week my guest is Perry Tuttle. Over the last 5 years, SPI has been piloting programming to help businesses determine and implement their social purpose, in an effort to create a movement of businesses for good.      While it's more often that businesses support charities, Mary Ellen explains how it makes sense for United Way to support the business sector in having a societal purpose– social and/or environmental – at its core to best benefit the community, in fact, to create the thriving community that United Ways often aspire to.  It's also an opportunity for United Way to shift, changing not only its approach for impacting the community but how it engages corporations.  This work has gained the attention of funders, interested in seeing this innovative model adopted across the country.  We suggest it's worth your attention too, whether as a funder, nonprofit or for profit organization.  Have a listen.      Resources  Social Purpose Institute: https://socialpurpose.ca   Social Purpose Innovators program:  https://socialpurpose.ca/services/innovators/   Social Purpose Implementers program: https://socialpurpose.ca/services/implementers/   Mary Ellen Shaafsma:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/maryellen-schaafsma   Coro Strandberg: https://www.linkedin.com/in/corostrandberg   Hemlock Printers:  https://www.hemlock.com   GLOBE Events: https://www.globeseries.com/events/   Propelling Purpose Summit:  Road to Purposeful Economy (discount code PAN-21):  https://propellingpurpose.ca       Thank you for listening to Impact Conversations with Lynn Fergusson & Sally Fazal . Jeffrey Mosher chats with Mike Larson, President and CEO, Michigan Association of United Ways, Lansing MI. New data points reveal disproportionate financial hardship in Black households across Michigan. The Michigan Association of United Ways released new ALICE data, which shows 63% of Black households statewide are unable to make ends meet, clearly illustrating the inequities that are deeply rooted in our national, state, and local systems and institutions. The ALICE data indicates that 40 percent of all Michigan households did not earn enough to cover basic expenses in 2018, including housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and a basic smartphone plan. The 63 percent of Black households falling below the ALICE Threshold was almost double that of white households—just 36 percent. The percentage of Black households unable to make ends meet is also almost three times higher than the antiquated Federal Poverty Level. Through the release of this data, the Michigan Association of United Ways hopes to support the many efforts underway to dismantle racism, raise awareness, shift attitudes, and change outcomes as local United Ways across Michigan are reinforcing their commitment to race and equity, both in policy and in action. » Visit MBN website: https://www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN’s YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqNX… » Like MBN: https://www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: https://twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/

Jacob's Hope is an organization here in Arizona, that seeks to provide care, support, and education for newborns who have been substance exposed. It started from the hearts of Jo and Brian Jones, who adopted their son, Jacob, who was substance exposed. This week we had the pleasure of interviewing Jo, the president and co-founder of Jacob's Hope, as well as Syria Watson, the community relations liaison. Syria also happens to be our aunt, and Jo is also a great friend of hers, and Chris' grandmother and Jo's mom have been best friends for over 40 years! Small world! As foster parents, we can have our substance exposed children receive care and treatment at Jacob's Hope. You can call 480-398-7373. But the best thing for you to do is to take your baby to the pediatrician, or the hospital, to receive a diagnosis for your child.  To learn more about Jacob's Hope and their amazing team, and what they do, check out their website. Though they are currently not in need of volunteers to hold the babies, they are always open to taking newborn sized diapers, as well as these items from their wish list, and financial donations as well! You can allocate your Amazon Smiles to Jacob's Hope, as well as your Fry's money. And if you search through United Ways list of organizations, you will find them there as well! It is just about tax season, and if you are getting ready to file your taxes, you can listen to this episode to help you with that! If you live in Arizona, there is a huge one-day conference going on called Kids Blitz. This is a great opportunity to get your education hours in to keep your foster care license up. This will be on Saturday, March 5th, 2020, and Jacob's Hope will be there! Good Word of the Day "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." Matthew 25:40 Thankful for the way that the Bible can convict us and move us to care for others the way Christ cares for us.  The random question of season 5 is 'Who would play you in the movie of your life?' Syria said Diane Keaton, cause it's the only correct answer. And Jo went with Emma Thompson, which is also a great answer because they are both prevailing, resilient, classic women. We hope you enjoyed this episode! Thank you for listening, and we hope that you will check out Jacob's Hope, and you can connect with them on Instagram . And you can connect with us as well! It’s been 10 years since United Way set an ambitious goal to make the invisible visible. Hidden within every community, every age group, and every ethnicity were a growing number of workers earning above the poverty line, but less than what’s needed to survive. In a state perceived as wealthy, United Way placed a spotlight on these workers, calling them ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed). Today with some 900,000 ALICE households in New Jersey – nearly triple the number in poverty – it’s a moral and economic imperative that we find innovative solutions that stem this growth in financial instability. NJ Spotlight and United Ways of New Jersey teamed up on October 29, 2018 to bring together our state’s top lawmakers and thought leaders to explore how New Jersey can be a national model for change in reversing this trend.

As many of my US listeners know tomorrow, November 6, 2018 is Election Day and Midterm elections, and we have the power to change and shift the paradigm of maternal and infant mortality in America with our vote.  In today's episode I sit down with March of Dimes President Stacey D. Stewart to discuss their Blanket Change Campaign launched on October 10th, and why our vote matters in this election, why the maternal death rate is getting worse as technology advances, and how working together with March of Dimes gives all new moms a better chance to be there for their babies. Stacey D. Stewart joined March of Dimes as its fifth President on January 1, 2017, and first African American President.  In this role, Stewart heads the organization leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies. She is responsible for all aspects of the organization's strategy, vision and operations. The maternal death rate in America has doubled in just twenty five years, and it’s only getting worse. More than 700 moms died due to pregnancy-related causes this year alone, making the United States the most dangerous developed nation to have a newborn baby. Women of color are most at risk of facing life-threatening complications, and black women are three times as likely as white women to die from pregnancy-related causes. Working together for #BlanketChange, we can give all new moms a better chance to be there for their babies.
