POPULARITY
One of the more underrated - some might say virtually lost - bands of the early rock era is Delaney & Bonnie. This singer-songwriter duo is made of session guitarist/vocalist Delaney Bramlett and his wife and former Ikette Bonnie Bramlett. Just as important as this founding couple is the number of talented musicians they brought into their recordings, with albums often being referenced as recorded by "Delaney & Bonnie and friends." These "friends" included luminaries such as Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duane Allman, Greg Allman, Steve Howe, and Rita Coolidge. D&B Together is the sixth and final album from Delaney & Bonnie. Originally entitled "Country Life," the album was delivered to Atco/Atlantic Records behind schedule and rushed into distribution. Although Atlantic executive Jerry Wexler was a friend of the duo, he didn't think the quality was where it needed to be and withdrew it from the market. He later sold the contract and the album's master tapes to CBS, who reordered the running sequence and re-released it in March 1972. In addition to frequent collaborators Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, and Duane Allman, this album also contains the work of "friends" like Dave Mason, Billy Preston, and Tina Turner. Despite the title, Delaney and Bonnie would divorce shortly after the album came out. Drugs were taking their toll on the couple and their relationship could not survive it. However, they did have a daughter named Bekka Bramlett, who was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1993-1995 and had a long career as a backing vocalist in the music industry.Bruce presents this underrated rock/soul album for this week's podcast.Comin' HomeThis song was released in December 1969 by Atco Records (US) and Atlantic Records (international). It was co-written by Bonnie Bramlett and Eric Clapton, and features Eric Clapton. It went to number 84 on the US pop charts. The lyrics are about being on the road and getting ready to come home to the one the singer loves. Only You Know and I KnowDave Mason originally wrote and recorded this song in 1970, and it became his first charting single, going to number 42 on the Billboard Hot 100. Delaney & Bonnie re-recorded it and took it to number 20 on the same chart. This single was released in 1971, another single that came out before the album. I Know Something Good About YouThis is a deeper cut on the album with an upbeat, funky sound. It was written by Delaney Bramlett and Joe Hicks. Groupie (Superstar)Most people recognize this as a hit from the Carpenters, but this is the original. Rita Coolidge came up with the idea after observing female groupies with rock starts in the late 60's, and the song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. It was the B-side to "Comin' Home." Richard Carpenter picked it up for the Carpenters, and changed some of the lyrics to be less risqué. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series The RookiesThis police action series debuted in October 1972. STAFF PICKS:And You and I by YesWayne leads off the staff picks with an excerpt of the 10+ minute work written by Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, and Chris Squire. The entire song consists of four parts, but the first two were released as a single edit which hovered just outside the top 40 on the Billboard charts. You Wear It Well by Rod StewartRob brings us the first single from Stewart's fourth studio album, "Never a Dull Moment." It went to number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 1 on the UK singles chart. Many consider this an arrangement of Stewarts hit "Maggie May." As with his previous album, members of the Faces join in as musicians on "Never a Dull Moment."Lean On Me by Bill WithersLynch features a song written and performed by Withers. It was inspired by his experience growing up in a mining town in West Virginia. The community ethic of that town was something Withers missed when he moved to Los Angeles. It was the first single from Withers' second album, "Still Bill." Turn to Stone by BarnstormBruce brings us a song inspired by frustration over the Vietnam War, the Nixon Administration, and the protesting that was going on at the time. Joe Walsh left the James Gang and formed a group called Barnstorm. The group put out three albums including one with the wonderful title "The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get." This song is off the group's self-titled debut album. COMEDY TRACK:My Ding-a-Ling by Chuck BerryWe close out this week's podcast with Berry's double entendre masterpiece, on the charts in this month.

In this bonus episode we meet Stewart and his mum Lesley. Stewart was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 8 followed by a subsequent diagnosis of a skull tumour when he was 22. He is now 34. Stewart and Lesley talk openly for the first time about the impact of cancer on them both as individuals and as a family. Lesley recalls being labelled as an overanxious mother prior to Stewarts diagnosis, and the challenges of juggling day to day life and work after his diagnosis whilst dealing with the fear and uncertainty which accompanies having a child with cancer. Stewart reflects on how different it felt for him having a serious health condition as a young adult in contrast to his childhood experience, and feeling he had 'more to lose' as an adult. Stewart and Lesley explain that they have never talked about the impact the cancer had had on them before now and, on reflection, they wish they had. In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with Kelli Stewart. Kelli Stewart was born in Atlanta and raised most of her life in Oglethorpe County, a rural community just outside of Athens, Georgia. Although both parents were not a consistent fixture in her life, Kelli's Grandmother, Ms. Amy Lou Faust, provided a stable and nurturing home environment where she raised Kelli to have an old soul that has served her well in life. Kelli is a graduate from Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, GA and credits her participation in ROTC as keeping her on the mostly straight and mostly narrow. Through the watchful care and guidance of her ROTC Instructor, Sgt. Fincher along with Ms. Sue Lee (English Teacher) and Shirley Daniel (Guidance Counselor) Kelli graduated from Cedar Shoals in 1996 and went on to study at Georgia State University. She completed her undergraduate studies at Kennesaw State University in 2011 where she earned a bachelor's degree from the Coles College of Business with honors. In addition to her degree, Kelli holds a wealth of knowledge regarding sports-based youth development as a resource for racial, social and economic justice and the impact sports have on the social-emotional development of youth. Today, Kelli, and her husband, C.J. Stewart, oversee two business ventures that they started together. Through Diamond Directors, they train and develop some of the country's top amateur and professional baseball athletes; Jason Heyward (Los Angeles Dodgers), Dexter Fowler (Chicago Cubs, World Series Champion), Andruw Jones (former Atlanta Brave), Peter Alonso (NY Mets), Kyle Lewis (Arizona Diamondbacks), and Andrew McCutchen (Pittsburgh Pirates) are a few notable professional clients. Through L.E.A.D., they train and develop some of Atlanta's hidden treasures in Atlanta Public Schools. L.E.A.D. provides inner city boys with the same opportunities to excel in life through baseball as the Stewarts' Diamond Directors clients with the focus being accessing higher education and community leadership. To date, L.E.A.D. Ambassadors have achieved a 100% high school graduation rate and a 91% college enrollment and scholarship rate (academic and athletic). Kelli and CJ have two beautiful daughters, Mackenzi (Southern University) and Mackenna (The Lovett School). To find out more about Kelli and the work that is being done at the L.E.A.D. With a message of brotherhood, sisterhood and faith — gospel delivered at high speed in a joyful fusion of pop, funk, R&B, Motown and dance — The Stewarts, brothers Del and Garry K., are back with “Stand.”Joy is a hallmark of all their music.“‘Stand' is a good-message song for the world, for brothers and sisters to come together, to show love to one another,” said Garry. “No more hatred. Show love. Pick up your brothers and sisters when they fall down. Pick them up.”“In my personal opinion,” said Del, “‘Stand' will generate hopefully more conversation about coming together, about treating people fairly, standing up for each other — brothers and sisters coming together.”“And stand up for your faith,” added Garry.Support the show

We went back to the '70s.”The clavinet sound comes from Stevie Wonder, and others come from the Dayton, Ohio, group Slave from their song “Slide.”“We were listening to their production, and we incorporated that as well as the Stevie Wonder production into our song,” said Del.The Stewarts, who have been writing and performing since the '70s, were opening a new phase of their career back in 2020, getting ready to move out into the world with their music. That was when “Stand” was written, but they put it on hold because two other songs, “His Door Is Open” followed by “Faith,” took off, reaching the top of the Upcoming charts, Nos. 1 and 2 respectively.About the time they were ready to push out “Stand,” Covid hit. The virus took down Del and Garry at different times. It threw us behind,” said Garry.“But also we know that God is good, and once we started feeling better, we started putting things together,” said Del. “We said, ‘Hey, let's get back on our feet and rock and roll.'”“Sometimes, when you experience setbacks,” he said, “it also makes you stronger when you come back, because God is good all the time, and when you fall, you gotta get up and continue to try.”The brothers come from a musical family. Johnny Hodges, who played sax for Duke Ellington, was a cousin. Their mother, Corinne, sang gospel with Sam Cooke. Del and Garry were introduced to Motown's Howard Davis by another cousin, Luther Bond of Luther Bond and the Emeralds. Their faith infuses their music. R&B, rock, funk, pop and Motown help propel the gospel of The Stewarts. Joyous worship accompanies the messages in their songs, messages indicated in the titles: “Stand,” “His Door Is Open,” “The Truth,” “Walk With Me Jesus,” “Battle of Survival,” “Family Affair.”They are working on other songs, including an EP, but for now the focus is on promoting “Stand” because, said Del, “the world needs to see the video and listen to the lyrics, and, hopefully, we can captivate a different type of audience.”“This is a song for everyone, from the young to the old,” said Garry. “You can be 8 years old and get something from this song.”“We want the listener to enjoy the song. The beat hopefully would capture the attention, but the lyrics would also capture the attention as well, because we were writing the song so that it's uplifting,” said Del.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

On Making Peace Visible, we are always questioning the mantra, if it bleeds, it leads. Boston's Charles Stuart murder case is a classic example of what can go horribly wrong when you follow that mantra. Charles Stuart was a father-to-be from the suburbs of Boston. Shortly after attending a birthing class in the city with his wife, Carol, Charles Stuart placed a 911 call. The couple had both been shot in their car. Stuart said a Black man pulled the trigger. Carol died from her injuries the next day. She and Charles were white, and the reaction from authorities was worlds away from what usually happened when a Black person was shot in Boston. Mayor Ray Flynn asked the police commissioner to assign every available detective to the case. Police immediately began raiding the homes of Black residents and conducting strip searches of young Black men in the Mission Hill area. With TV news playing and replaying the 911 call and a photo of the Stewarts bleeding on the front page of the Boston Herald the next day, a media circus ensued. But two months later - when Charles Stuart died by jumping off a bridge – it quickly became clear he was in fact the killer. This episode, we're joined by Adrian Walker, an associate editor and columnist at the Boston Globe who was a rookie reporter there at the time of the Stuart case. Walker headed up a team of investigative reporters who recently revisited this story in a new and fascinating way. In the podcast Murder in Boston, and web series Nightmare in Mission Hill, investigative reporters at the Globe brought new evidence to light – like law enforcement officials who knew about Stuart's guilt, but kept quiet. The podcast and the report also give voice to the family of Willie Bennett, the Black man who was the Boston police's prime suspect. In this retelling, Walker – who hosts the podcast, – and other journalists discuss the media's shortcomings in covering the Charles Stuart story, and how the news reports often fanned the flames of racial tension around it. The project also offers a blueprint for how journalists can help bring about healing following community trauma.
