Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Singing Legend Peggy Lee's Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells About Harvey's guest: One of the most popular features of our show is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, celebrating the careers and legacies of the greatest stars who are no longer with us.   Today's guest, Holly Foster Wells, is descended from show business royalty.  She's the granddaughter of one of the most popular and beloved music artists of all time: the fabulous Peggy Lee, whose contributions to the world of popular music and jazz were monumental.   Over her 7-decade career, she recorded over 1100 songs and released over 50 albums, with over a hundred top 100 hit singles, including “Somebody Else is Taking My Place”, “Why Don't You Do Right”, “Golden Earings”, “Riders in the Sky”, “Is That All There Is”, “Lover”, and of course, everybody's favourite, “Fever”, for which SHE came up with that distinctive arrangement, AND she wrote new lyrics.    As a matter of fact, Peggy Lee was an extraordinary songwriter, who wrote or co-wrote over 270 songs, including her hits “Little Fool”, “What More Can a Woman Do”, “I Don't Know Enough About You”, “It's a Good Day”, and “Manana”.  For the Disney movie “Lady and the Tramp”, she co-wrote ALL of the original songs, and she supplied the singing and speaking voices of 4 characters.  She also wrote songs for many other movies, including “Anatomy of a Murder”, “The Jazz Singer”, “The Rawhide Years”, “Johnny Guitar”, “Tom Thumb”, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”, “The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming”, “Walk, Don't Run”, and many more.  She appeared in 10 movies including “Stage Door Canteen”, “The Powers Girl”, “Jazz Ball”, “Mr. Music”, “The Jazz Singer”, and my personal favourite, “Pete Kelly's Blues”, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the Audience Award for Most Promising Female Personality of 1955.   Ms Lee received 13 Grammy Award nominations including 1 win, plus a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.  She was the first female recipient of 2 awards from the Songwriters Guild of America: the Aggie Award, for her composing skills, and the President's Award, for her support of young, emerging songwriters. In 1990 she won the ASCAP Pied Piper Award, and 2 years later she was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame.  She received 2 honorary doctorates, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2020 the ASCAP Foundation established the Annual Peggy Lee Songwriter Award.   Peggy Lee was a creative powerhouse, who directed her life and career on her own terms.  But for her millions of fans, it's all about her quietly captivating voice, that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Peggy Lee and Holly Foster Wells, go to:https://www.peggylee.com/https://www.facebook.com/misspeggylee/https://www.instagram.com/peggyleeofficial/https://twitter.com/peggyleemusichttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWfdzpDGBCOOWxWVR0fLVNw #PeggyLee   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

1943... the world's at war, and the film world is reacting, but in ways good and bad. For you see, inside all of us are two wolves: Rick's Café American, and the Stage Door Canteen. And the Academy and Audience fed very different wolves. The Oscars hand the top trophy to Casablanca, about as correct a choice as can be made, while the audience turned out for army fundraiser This is the Army with Ronald Reagan, which our returning guest Munsi Parker-Munroe likens to the US funding Al Qaeda in the 80s: not one of the ten worst things Reagan did, but still not great. It's a best of times, worst of times situation for film, but a best of all worlds scenario for you, the listener, as we get to appreciate something beautiful, then tear down something distinctly not. According to this website Roger (1954 - 1982) was an American gay porn star who appeared in pornographic movies in the 1970s. After an early career as a model and go-go boy from age 17, he appeared as a "Discovery" centerfold in "Blueboy" magazine, Roger appeared in many film loops of the pre-condom era, co-starring with other notable porn stars of the time, including Al Parker, Jack Wrangler, Chuck Samson, and Bruno. Roger was also a popular stage performer in gay nightclubs and theaters. Roger left the adult film industry in 1980 and in 1982, en route to Las Vegas, perished in a car accident. In 2000, an imposter posing as Roger appeared on a number of Yahoo! groups, but was soon exposed as a fraud. He told stories of having attended Al Parker's memorial service in 1992, remaining in touch with co-star Jack Wrangler, and maintaining a monogamous relationship since the late 1980s while living in a suburb of Chicago. This is another of our salutes to the music and service that the Stage Door Canteens provided to military personnel during World War II. The Stage Door Canteen refers to the famous World War II-era Times Square social club for soldiers temporarily stationed in New York City awaiting deployment, usually to the war in Europe. It opened March 2, 1942, in a space underneath the 44th Street Theatre. The canteen was open seven nights a week and offered servicemen dancing, entertainment, food and nonalcoholic drinks, and even opportunities to rub shoulders with celebrities. And it all was FREE. The New York acting community did everything. They would perform songs, comedy, and short versions of the plays and musicals that were playing on Broadway. Actresses also served as hostesses and dancing partners. The New York Stage Door Canteen was immediately popular. The space was 40-by-80 feet and could accommodate 500 people, but it was filled to capacity from the start. Seven other canteens were later located in Boston, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Francisco and Newark and Los Angeles. In 1943 the success of New York’s Stage Door Canteen prompted a movie about the popular service men's center and featured stars of the big screen and popular Big Bands. One of the many praiseworthy qualities of the canteens was their credo. They were open to all servicemen of every Allied nation, and without any form of segregation. As the war dragged on, the popularity of the canteens never wavered. By November 1945, Stage Door Canteens were operating in eight US cities and London and Paris. Together, they entertained and fed 11 million Allied servicemen. The only canteen to rival the original’s fame was the Hollywood Canteen in Los Angeles, thanks to its proximity to the country’s biggest stars. Instead of theater people, movie stars and crew members did the work. Hollywood Canteen, the movie, was the fourth highest grossing film of 1944. Watch both movies. You’ll be entertained and hear some great music. If you ever visit the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, you’ll see a replica of the Stage Door Canteen. We hope you enjoy this music of the Stage Door Canteens. Please accept this as a tribute to the Greatest Generation. To all our service members past and present, thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your service.
