Carol Ziske is an accomplished theatre director, choreographer, and actor with over five decades of professional experience in the industry. They have numerous acting credits on Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional theatre and national tours. She has starred alongside the likes of John Lithgow, Jerry Zaks, Bob Gunton, Beth Fowler, Robert Morse, Rudy Valee, Rita Rudner, Chip Zien, Ron Holgate, and F. Murray Abraham. Additionally, I have worked with notable directors including Jerome Robbins, Joseph Hardy, Patricia Birch, and John Bowab. Carol is a recipient of the Colgate Palmolive Achievement Award and the New Jersey Drama Critics Award. They are directing a production of One Touch of Ava this summer at Ivoryton Playhouse as well as a series of workshops for the musical, Hurricane Jimmy later in 2023. William Linster is a Connecticut native and New York-based pianist, composer, music director, and arranger. Having been playing since the age of two and performing professionally since the age of seven, William has an extensive background in classical training, as well as in jazz and other contemporary styles. A graduate of the world-renowned New School For Jazz And Contemporary Music, William has studied and worked with some of the greatest musicians in the world, including Grammy® nominees Bobby Sanabria, Dave Douglas, Charles Tolliver, Cecil Bridgewater, and Andy Mckee, as well as Grammy® winners Bill Kirchner, Robert Sadin, and Hank Schocklee (Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Inductee, Public Enemy). As an accompanist and session musician, he has worked with artists such as Katie Stevens (American Idol, The Bold Type), Coyle Girelli (Your Vegas, The Chevin), Ron McClure (Blood, Sweat & Tears), R&B hitmaker James "D-Train" Williams, and numerous other Broadway stars and opera singers. Upon first working with William, the late acclaimed librettist Roger O. Hirson (Tony Award®-nominee, Pippin) simply said, "He's a genius." He made his Carnegie Hall debut at age 16, and was featured on NBC Nightly News at 17 while at the Havana International Jazz Festival in Cuba. William is also a trained vocalist, in addition to having received training on violin, trumpet, clarinet, mallet percussion, concert percussion, drums and handbells. He recently served as the Music Director for the Off-Broadway production of Fringe Deaths (2019). William is currently in the process of developing four full-length musicals he wrote with late Hollywood screenwriter, Lawrence Alexander (Charlie's Angels, CHiPs, Barnaby Jones). He was recently named a 2022 Jonathan Larson Grant Finalist by American Theatre Wing. The musical centers around Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of Theodore Roosevelt, who embarks on a forbidden romance with Flora Payne Whitney, a wealthy heiress from a different social sphere. The Roosevelts, renowned for their political activism and their role in trust-busting (which significantly impacted the Whitney family's wealth), stand in stark contrast to the reserved Whitneys, who are determined to avoid scandal of any kind. The story follows Quentin as he navigates the pressures of familial expectations, personal ambition, and the looming shadow of war. Through a mix of historical events and artistic interpretation, the musical delves into themes of heroism, love, and the impact of war on individuals and their families. Quentin weaves together dramatic scenes, emotional soliloquies, and powerful musical numbers to create a moving portrait of a young man caught between personal desire and duty, love and loss, and the enduring question of how to make one's mark in the shadow of a powerful legacy.

Tonight's special guest is Victoria Valentino from California. Ms. Valentino was an acting student in New York's American Theatre Wing. Born in Hollywood during WWII, she was raised in Connecticut. When she became Playboy's Miss September 1963, it radically redirected her life and career. She was a multi-rape, child, and domestic abuse and sex trafficking survivor by the age of 21. As a struggling single mother to a racially mixed son, she became an actress, a Go-Go dancer, folksinger- songwriter to make ends meet. She opened the first Playboy Club on the Sunset Strip on New Year's Eve 1964. In 1969 on the day she was celebrating her recording contract with Capitol Records, her six-year-old son drowned in her music attorney's swimming pool in the Hollywood Hills. Several weeks later, she was drugged, kidnapped, and raped by Bill Cosby. Victoria became a Registered Nurse and specialized in Home Hospice; Ms. Valentino has been in many magazines and news articles. Today she lives in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains with her dogs and a big orange cat. She's a keynote speaker, sexual assault activist, and mentor to survivors of rape and sexual assault. My guest this week is Ted Chapin whose captivating 2003 book Everything Was Possible: The Birth of the Musical “Follies,” has recently been reissued in a revised and updated edition.  As you may know, this book is based on Ted's first-hand experience as the production assistant on the original Broadway production of the Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, & James Goldman landmark musical Follies. Of course, the expression, “I just couldn't put that book down” is a cliché – but in this case, it has been absolutely true – twice! -- both when I read this book when it was originally released, and again just a few weeks ago when I had the great pleasure of diving into it all over again. On last week's episode, Peter Filichia, talked about wanting to be able to go back in time and be a “fly on the wall” to witness the inner workings of legendary musicals as they were being put together. Ted's book allows all of us to do exactly that. This book makes you feel as it you are right there in the thick of it during Follies' rehearsal period in New York, and in Boston during its out-of-town tryout's many trials and tribulations. For 40 years Ted served as the President of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization a role that he was personally chosen by the Rodgers and Hammerstein families to take on. On his watch, there were eight Tony Award-winning Best Revivals of musicals in the R&H catalog -- On Your Toes, Carousel, Show Boat, Annie Get Your Gun, South Pacific, The King And I – twice! – and Oklahoma! He also supervised major R&H productions In London, on television, and around the world. And Ted is the co-founder of the acclaimed City Center Encores! series, and he currently serves on the boards of City Center, The Kurt Weil Foundation, and the American Theatre Wing. It is always a delight to speak with him – especially regarding his one-of-a-kind experience of being in the rooms where Follies happened. Become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! Howard Sherman, "Another Day's Begun: Thornton Wilder's Our Town in the 21st Century"

Madison BookBeat

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 15, 2021 53:13

Stu Levitan welcomes Howard Sherman, author of Another Day's Begun: Thornton Wilder's Our Town in the 21st Century as we add a new category – books about plays by Madison playwrights. That's right, Thornton Wilder – the only person to receive Pulitzer Prizes for both Drama and the Novel – was born right here in Madison in 1897, when his father Amos was the progressive editor/publisher of the Wisconsin State Journal for 12 years before moving to Hong Kong as US Consul General in 1906. Our Town is an odd play, with neither conventional plot nor even linear narrative, just snapshots of some of the 2,642 residents of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, especially Emily Webb, George Gibbs, and their families. Their growing up, their marrying, their living, their dying. By Wilder's stage direction, the play is to be performed with no curtain, no scenery, and no props, save for a table, some chairs, and two ladders. The lead character doesn't even have a name, but is just called the Stage Manager, speaking directly to the audience and rarely interacting with the rest of the cast. It was a piece of meta-theatre 25 years before that term even existed. Despite what he had the Stage Manager say, it was not, Wilder later wrote, meant to be understood as a picture of life in a New Hampshire village; or as an updated interpretation of Dante's Purgatory. Rather, he explained, it was “an attempt to find a value above all price for the smallest events in our daily life.” This seemingly small play has found great and lasting value ever since it opened on Broadway on February 4, 1938 and won that year's Pulitzer Prize for Drama – the first of two such awards Wilder would win, along with an earlier Pulitzer for the novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey. Decade after decade, it has been the most-produced play in America, from high schools to major professional productions on both stage and screen, featuring some of the biggest stars of their day. It's been translated into 80 languages, and produced around the world; just this month, it became the first production when the Queensland Theatre of Australia reopened after the pandemic. But what is it like to live in Grover's Corners eight times a week? What happens when you think about the Mind of God every night, and bid farewell to the living at Wednesday and weekend matinees? How do you step back in time while keeping the play relevant to the audiences of today? These are the questions which occupy Howard Sherman in Another Day's Begun, questions he sought to answer by talking to more than 100 actors and directors responsible for 13 of the most interesting and innovative productions of the past 21 years. Some are award-winning household names, like Helen Hunt and Jane Kaczmarek; others are maximum-security inmates of Sing Sing prison. And he has done the seemingly impossible – written a book about Our Town that is almost as emotionally powerful and multi-faceted as the play itself. Howard Sherman comes well-equipped to this assignment. He grew up in New Haven not far from Wilder's long-time home in Hamden, CT and has held a series of executive, managerial and public relations positions with several theatres, including the Eugene O'Neill Theater, Hartford Stage, and Westport Playhouse. A work of startling originality when it debuted in 1938, Thornton Wilder's Our Town evolved to be seen by some as a vintage slice of early 20th Century Americana, rather than being fully appreciated for its complex and eternal themes and its deceptively simple form. Another day’s Begun: Thornton Wilder’s Our Town in the Twentieth Century is a new book that shines a light on the play's continued impact in the 21st century and makes a case for the healing powers of Wilder's text to a world confronting multiple crises. In this episode I am joined by the author, Howard Sherman.Howard is an arts administrator, advocate and writer based in New York City. He was executive director of the American Theatre Wing from 2003 to 2011 and during that time, his varied responsibilities included incorporating SpringboardNYC, the Theatre Intern Group and The Jonathan Larson Grants into ATW’s programming. Howard also conceived the book The Play That Changed My Life; and served on the Tony Awards Management and Administration Committees.During his tenure at the American Theatre Wing, he was executive producer of the company’s long running television program Working in the Theatre, hosting 30 panel conversations among the more than 80 shows he produced, and as creator of the audio program Downstage Centre, he interviewed 325 theatre luminaries in a seven-year span.Howard was the first General Manager of Goodspeed Musicals, working on 24 new and classic musicals, including the U.S. premieres of Alan Ayckbourn's work and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s By Jeeves. He has moderated artist conversations for public audiences for more than 30 years, having begun by leading post-performance discussions with such noted figures as Athol Fugard and JoAnne Akalaitis at the Annenberg Center in Philadelphia. He currently writes a weekly column on U.S. theatre for The Stage in London and writes monthly for Stage Directions magazine. In January 2021 he releases the book in which he appraises and celebrates Thornton Wilder’s classic of American drama; Our Town, through the eyes of the folk 'who have spent time in Grover's Corners'.Howard joined Stages from Manhattan in a fascinating conversation about this classic play, and to ponder the future challenge for the Broadway theatre and stages beyond. The Stages podcast is available from Apple podcasts, Spotify, Whooshkaa and where all good podcasts are found.

“The Fallout” premiered on February 5th, 2013, immediately after the premiere episode. (Aww, remember those two-hour premieres that networks used to do back in the day, Mo?) It was written by Julie Rottenberg & Elisa Zuritsky, whose previous work we saw in the season 1 episodes “Let’s Be Bad” and “The Movie Star,” and was directed by Craig Zisk. Now, here’s a weird thing: viewership for this episode was 4.45 million, down from 4.48 in the previous episode WHICH WAS AN HOUR AGO. I guess 30,000 people collectively turned off their TVs after hour 1? We had three featured songs in this episode: one cover of the Eurythmics’ “Would I Lie To You?” And two original songs by two different musical theatre composers: the first by then-up-and-comer duo team Pasek & Paul called “Caught in the Storm” sung by Katherine McPhee, and the second by our home team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman called “They Just Keep Moving the Line” sung by Megan Hilty. Eileen summons her bruised songwriting team to attend the American Theatre Wing gala, but Julia can barely get out the door let alone put on cocktail attire. But Julia heard from Mary Testa who heard from Jackie Hoffman who heard from Cheyenne Jackson who heard from Harvey Fierstein that she and Julia would be presenting at the gala (a lie that Tom made you on the street).  In addition to Bombshell being put on ice, Derek gets fired from The Wiz - not only because he shagged a couple of actresses but the five dancers are accusing him of sexual harassment. One of them, Daisy, serves Derek the T in front of Schnippers, saying “You don’t get it. You’re a big shot Director. You’re in a position of power from the mind you wake up in the morning and you don’t treat that power with respect.” Derek second guesses his serial seducing in a dream sequence set to the Eurythmics' “Would I Lie To You?” Ivy is considering leaving the business, as she’s going in for parts that she would have passed on two years ago. But running into a drunken Derek on a stoop, he leaves her with one nugget of wisdom: “You weren’t my Marilyn, but what do I know?” Karen Cartwright hunts down the young and unknown composing team. Half of the team, a twink named Kyle, is eager to collab with Karen. But while his songwriting partner Jimmy is cute enough to go to Greenpoint for, he is anything but agreeable. Even her attempts to wow Jimmy with an impromptu performance of one of his songs drives him away. Jimmy retorts that he doesn’t need help to make it big, but decides the next day that he’ll give it a go with Karen for Kyle’s sake.  The American Theatre Wing gala becomes an embarrassment for the Bombshell crew, when Tom gets caught in his lie about presenting and Eileen is asked to leave by the League president. But she decides to leave the industry with a parting shot to remember: an announcement that Bombshell is coming to Broadway this season followed by Ivy Lynn giving a stunning rendition of a never-before-heard tune called “They Just Keep Moving The Line.” Learn more about your ad choices. He received the National Press Foundation's 2017 Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. His new book THREE DAYS IN MOSCOW: RONALD REAGAN AND THE FALL OF THE SOVIET EMPIRE could not be more timely as tensions between the U.S. and Russia flare up…it's insightful to revisit the historic role Ronald Reagan contributed to his country – ending the Cold War without the firing of a single shot. The end of the Cold War is perhaps the defining historical moment of the past half century, and it must be understood if we are to make sense of America's place in the world today. Baier convincingly argues that Reagan's essential role in ending the Cold War is too little appreciated. RANDI ZUCKERBERG is a force to be reckoned with. She is a New York Times bestselling author, the founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media and host of “Dot Complicated” on SiriusXM, inspired by her book of the same name. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, known together as Pasek and Paul, are an American songwriting duo and composing team for musical theater, films, and television. Their works include A Christmas Story, Dogfight, Edges, and James and the Giant Peach. Their original songs have been featured on NBC's Smash. Most recently, they have created and written the score for the stage musical Dear Evan Hansen which premiered at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. in July 2015. Both artists are winners of the American Theatre Wing's 2007 Jonathan Larson Award, which honors achievement by composers, lyricists and librettists. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are not fresh off the boat by any means.  They’re Tony nominated and have a Broadway show to their credit, and a couple of high profile Off Broadway showings as well, including the upcoming Dear Evan Hansen.  But as Broadway’s next gen of musical theater composers, they’ve got a unique perspective on all things, including . . . How they got their music to the world through YouTube. What went wrong with the first musical they wrote after getting to New York and how they used that to their advantage. 20 years from now, how they’d know if they “made it.” Why all artists in the 21st century have to be great marketers. The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, Talk Radio for Fine Minds welcomes two legends of stage and screen, Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna as well as one of the most influential men in the New York theatre, Theodore “Ted” Chapin. Early in their 47-year marriage, Renee Taylor and Joe Bologna had a huge fight — a fight that ultimately led to a highly autobiographical, two-person show. “I told him to get out,” Taylor recently said in an interview. “So he started packing. But then I started packing, too. He asked me why and I said, ‘If you ever leave me, I'm going with you.'” Forty-seven years later Taylor and Bologna have established themselves as one of the major power marriages in entertainment. They both have distinguished careers as actors. Bologna has starred in movies such as “My Favorite Year and is probably best known for TV's “Married With Children.” Taylor has appeared in “The Producers” and “Alfie.” She is probably best known as Fran Drescher's mother, Sylvia Fine, on “The Nanny.” They have written and directed for the theater. Their first play together, “Lovers and Other Strangers,” was a Broadway hit that became a film, earning them an Oscar nomination. Their relationship is always at the heart of their creativity. The American Theatre Wing gave out its Tony Awards this past Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall and the big winner of the night was Best Musical Kinky Boots, which also brought home statuettes for Billy Porter as Best Performer by a Leading Actor in a Musical and Cyndi Lauper for Best Original Score.  Forty New York City theaters are considered Broadway houses and productions featured there are eligible to win Tonys. The 868-member electorate gave at least one award to 10 plays and musicals out of 38 that were nominated. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood tells us what the Tonys got right this year, both onstage and onscreen, and why there were a few surprises among the awards, too.
