We're celebrating the 105th anniversary of the birth of Jack Webb - one of the faces on the Mt. Rushmore of old time radio drama. Best known for Dragnet, Webb logged many an hour solving crimes on the air as cops, private eyes, and amateur sleuths. We'll hear him as Jeff Regan, Investigator in "The Guy from Gower Gulch" (originally aired on CBS on November 13, 1948) and as Pat Novak For Hire in "Wendy Morris" (originally aired on ABC on May 8, 1948). He solves a Prohibition-era mystery in Pete Kelly's Blues (AFRS rebroadcast of an episode known as "Little Jake" from May 22, 1951), and we wrap up with Webb in his element as Sgt. Joe Friday in "The Big Want" (originally aired on NBC on March 1, 1953).

For the third and final week of our mini-tribute to the early work of Jack Webb, who was most famous for "Dragnet," we are going back to one of his first radio acting performances on the exceptional CBS series "Escape." This is an emotionally dramatic role for Webb, who usually played it cold, as a tightly-wound individual such as Pat Novak or Pete Kelly. This is a "Mummy"-esque fantastical story of ancient Egypt and life-sustaining magic by Arthur Conan Doyle. Moving along from last week's grimy waterfront detective Pat Novak, we look at TV and radio actor Jack Webb in a similar role, Pete Kelly, a musician who travelled amongst the seedy world of jazz musicians and crime lords. Learn on this episode how authentic this show was, and how "Pete Kelly's Blues" really had very little to do with "the blues" at all. One of my favorite old time radio shows is Pete Kelly's Blues, a 1951 series starring Jack Webb as a hardboiled cornet player in a Dixieland jazz band who solves mysteries in 1920s Kansas City. Only six episodes are thought to survive.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Kelly%27s_Blues_(radio_series)2. Eccentric Houseboat Detective was inspired by John D. MacDonald's character Travis McGee in The Deep Blue Good-by. Not inspired by eccentric sailboat detectives Sonny Crocket or Quincy or Adam West's character in The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1969).3. Anachronism: the Knights Templar were arrested for heresy by order of King Phillip IV on October 12th, 1307, but you can tell this episode is set in summer because no one is described as wearing coats as they would be in Parabellum City in October.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trials_of_the_Knights_TemplarCredits:The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950); the ad music for Eccentric Houseboat Detective was from D.O.A. A 335-year-long ‘war' (in which not a single shot was fired) officially ended on 17th April, 1986, when the UK's Dutch ambassador landed on the Isles of Scilly and declared an end to hostilities between the Netherlands and this tiny archipelago off the coast of Cornwall. The origins of this eccentric conflict date back to 1651, during the English Civil War, where the Dutch found themselves indirectly involved due to their support for the parliamentarians. Angered by Dutch assistance to their enemies, the Royalists (based in Scilly) began robbing Dutch shipping lanes in the English Channel, prompting a declaration of war from the Dutch side... In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how local historian Roy Duncan's curiosity led him to investigate a long-standing rumour of his homeland's "war" with the Dutch - and unearth one of the craziest conflicts on record! Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Singing Legend Peggy Lee's Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells About Harvey's guest: One of the most popular features of our show is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, celebrating the careers and legacies of the greatest stars who are no longer with us. Today's guest, Holly Foster Wells, is descended from show business royalty. She's the granddaughter of one of the most popular and beloved music artists of all time: the fabulous Peggy Lee, whose contributions to the world of popular music and jazz were monumental. Over her 7-decade career, she recorded over 1100 songs and released over 50 albums, with over a hundred top 100 hit singles, including “Somebody Else is Taking My Place”, “Why Don't You Do Right”, “Golden Earings”, “Riders in the Sky”, “Is That All There Is”, “Lover”, and of course, everybody's favourite, “Fever”, for which SHE came up with that distinctive arrangement, AND she wrote new lyrics. As a matter of fact, Peggy Lee was an extraordinary songwriter, who wrote or co-wrote over 270 songs, including her hits “Little Fool”, “What More Can a Woman Do”, “I Don't Know Enough About You”, “It's a Good Day”, and “Manana”. For the Disney movie “Lady and the Tramp”, she co-wrote ALL of the original songs, and she supplied the singing and speaking voices of 4 characters. She also wrote songs for many other movies, including “Anatomy of a Murder”, “The Jazz Singer”, “The Rawhide Years”, “Johnny Guitar”, “Tom Thumb”, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”, “The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming”, “Walk, Don't Run”, and many more. She appeared in 10 movies including “Stage Door Canteen”, “The Powers Girl”, “Jazz Ball”, “Mr. Music”, “The Jazz Singer”, and my personal favourite, “Pete Kelly's Blues”, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the Audience Award for Most Promising Female Personality of 1955. Ms Lee received 13 Grammy Award nominations including 1 win, plus a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. She was the first female recipient of 2 awards from the Songwriters Guild of America: the Aggie Award, for her composing skills, and the President's Award, for her support of young, emerging songwriters. In 1990 she won the ASCAP Pied Piper Award, and 2 years later she was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame. She received 2 honorary doctorates, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2020 the ASCAP Foundation established the Annual Peggy Lee Songwriter Award. Peggy Lee was a creative powerhouse, who directed her life and career on her own terms. But for her millions of fans, it's all about her quietly captivating voice, that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages. Thoughts on Record: Podcast of the Ottawa Institute of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Effective coping almost always hinges on an accurate appraisal of the stressful event that is being navigated, particularly with respect to what can be controlled versus not. In this 3rd annual Fireside Chat, the host of Thoughts on Record, Dr. Pete Kelly, C.Psych, shares some observations on the relationship between truth, control & coping and why it is often so hard to see things as they are (and not as we wish them to be) and how this can at times sabotage our efforts at managing situations that come up in our lives. In this discussion we cover:a practical and workable definition of "truth" within psychotherapy common reasons why it is difficult for us to embrace the truth of what is going on in our livesthe unintended consequences of emotional avoidance on the coping strategies selectedthe two main categories of coping - problem-focused & emotion-focused coping and when they are best deployedan overview of the likely emotional outcomes when there is a mismatch between the demands of the situation and the category of coping used and how to use your emotional reaction to tell if you are on the right track or notComments or feedback? Thoughts on Record: Podcast of the Ottawa Institute of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Owing to a rapidly changing world, many clinicians understandably feel it is increasingly difficult to keep track of (let alone integrate) considerations around systems level challenges (e.g., social media, political polarization, housing shortage, monetary policy etc.) that may be germane to their day-to-day work with clients. In this conversation, Dr. Pete Kelly, C.Psych and Dr. Jeff Perron. C.Psych, MBA, share some of their thoughts on what they have been observing going on in the world based on their respective lens, as well as through the lens of clinical psychologists who are trying to help clients in an ever increasingly complex and distressing environment. In this conversation (recorded January, 2022) they place a particular focus on how current monetary policy could promote inequity and division in society as well as discuss how innovations like Bitcoin (perhaps surprisingly to many) could reflect a new way forward as per the issues raised in the discussion. Topics covered include:reflections on noted shifts in macroeconomic patterns, political polarization and the "accelerant" influence of social media in this respectthe potential benefits of mental health clinicians having awareness of systems level challenges faced by their clients the challenge of science vs. advocacy driven narratives around important policy issuesthe role that current monetary policy could play in accelerating political polarization and economic disparity the definition of "money" and types of moneythe challenges associated with fiat currencies related to inflation and how this drives division and inequityconcerns around sustainability of current financial paradigmsa very brief primer on Bitcoin and the role this emergent currency platform could play in addressing some of the challenges related to division and inequity of Fiat currencyIMPORTANT: Neither Drs.
