Call it “dream logic”; call it a time-collapsing mind meld. It came to me in a dream: a snatch of nonsense lyric and melody, an ear-worm summoned up from 60 years in the past. I didn't know what it was, why it was teasing me, or precisely where it came from, but there it was… “and, so on, so on, so forth…” What was it? I googled just that much, and up it came: “The Hut-Song,” sung by the eponymous elephant in Horton Hatches an Egg, a cartoon that I had watched as a toddler. And, digging back a bit further, I discovered that preceding that animated Dr. Suess adaptation, The Hut-Sut Song was a monster pop hit, with several cover versions - the most popular being Freddy Martin's. Thereby, not only did I jump start my memory, but I made a new discovery, as well. So, here we are: A Sunny Song from the deep recesses of my sub-conscious. I'm including both versions because the pop hit has a whole backstory to explain the indecipherable lyrics.I think the genesis of this whole mission was that I recently became a grandfather, and had been thinking about what books I'd like to read to the child. I was trying to remember the ones I read to my kids, and the ones that were read to me. I loved all the Dr. Suess books, especially “If I Ran the Circus”, and later, cogitating about what to include in the next round of Sunny Songs, this ditty bubbled up from deep within my gooey grey matter, and would not be denied. So, my next question would be: Why was Horton the Elephant singing that song? It's a house of mirrors.

News: Bob Iger talked about the company and the parks during a question and answer session at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. He emphasized that reducing crowds in the parks was important to improving the guest experience. It sounds like part of the process to help with that would be to add new capacity and attractions to serve more guests. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/ceo-bob-iger-talks-disney-parks-guest-experience-rethinking-pricing-strategies-and-opportunities-to-add-more-attractions/ Spring Break season has descended upon the resort. This year, it has been very interesting to see the crowds because of the on again, off again weather changes. On the nice weather days, the parks feel like they are back to the pre-pandemic levels, then just a day later with rain, the parks seem deserted. Waits on the rainy days were mostly under 30 minutes – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Nightly fireworks have returned to the resort for the higher crowds and spring break. Usually, the fireworks are only part of the show from Friday through Sunday. Now, they are performed every night, which is a wonderful way to see Wondrous Journeys. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ Walt Disney Imagineering were at it again showing off some of the new technology that they have been working on at a Disney Parks presentation at South by Southwest. Some of the eye-catching things included a “life size” Tinker Bell. In addition, they demoed a small dynamic robot that could bring Judy Hopps to life, along with showing off the Hulk character that was in Avengers Campus in September. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/new-look-at-life-size-tinker-bell-for-disney-parks-meet-and-greet-may-still-debut/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/video-disney-parks-shares-closer-look-at-life-size-tiny-tinker-bell-technology/ The rest of Toontown opens this weekend, but another smaller part of the land has opened. EngineEar Souvenirs has opened as the attached gift shop to Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. The new shop is very themed to trains, including a train that travels around the store above guest's heads. The shop carries a lot of Toontown and Runaway Railway attraction merchandise. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2023/03/10/disney-opened-a-new-store-today-come-check-it-out/ and https://www.micechat.com/349905-disneyland-toontown-merchandise-engineear-souvenirs/ St. Patrick's Day is this Friday and of course, Disneyland has some treats to help celebrate! Guests can pick up some shamrock-shaped rice crispy treats, green stuff at Red Rose Tavern, a cupcake and donut at Craftsman Grill at the Grand Californian Hotel, and a cocktail at the Hearthstone Lounge though March 19th. The Mickey floral has been replaced by the Minnie floral for International Women's Day, which was on March 8th. We expect Minnie to stay in place for at least a few weeks. – https://www.micechat.com/350274-disneyland-update-the-one-two-punch/ We talk about synergy between the Disney brands that used to happen a lot in the parks, and there is some that has come back recently. Now through April 30th at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, a special Hulu-inspired Coca-Cola Freestyle flavor will be available. The new flavor is called Hulu Fanta Suprise and helps to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the streaming service.  – https://dlnewstoday.com/2023/03/limited-time-hulu-inspired-coca-cola-freestyle-flavor-coming-to-disneyland-resort-and-walt-disney-world/ We talked about Adventureland Day last week, but our past guest Freddy Martin, better known as “Skipper Freddy” has posted a wonderful article on this year's event and what it all entails. Transcript of this episode: Freddy (00:20): Welcome aboard the Themed Attraction Podcast, where we take you for a ride... through the wonderful world of theme park design that is. You've just set sail on an unmatched journey of discovery and discussion with theme park industry master of the craft. I'm your skipper, Freddy Martin, and riding the rippling river with me is theme park designer, master planner, and Chief Creative Officer for Storyland studios, Mel McGowan. Which way is the river taken us today, Mel? Mel (00:47): Freddy, we've got a unique episode on the horizon day. As we interview one of the Themed Entertainment Association's first ever Catalyst Award recipients, Sina Bahram. Sina is the founder of Prime Access Consulting. That's an inclusive design firm that helps attraction designers implement accessible solutions that make knowledge, culture, and technology available to the widest possible audience. And that we are so excited to have him as part of our extended team for a very special project, which I'm hoping you're allowed to talk about here. Freddy (01:16): Maybe a little bit. Sina is unique. I had the pleasure of hearing him speak at the TEA Summit and I knew his story would blow our audience away. So I had to ask him to be on the show. I immediately asked him to join us for an interview and he didn't disappoint. I'm telling you. His passion and enthusiasm for helping create experiences for everyone is infectious. I dare you to match his enthusiasm. All righty folks, keep your hands, arms feet and legs inside the boat, 'cause This episode is about to leave the dock. Hit it, Sam. Mel (02:04): You know, Freddy, when the ADA or Americans with disability act passed in 1990 that was a pretty groundbreaking deal for the certainly the architecture industry for the real estate development industry. You know, and actually we're excited to be working with one of the catalysts that really kind of worked to get hat passed. You know, and it has radically, of course changed the way new attractions are built, how old attractions are modified. I mean, some of the blatantly obvious examples, like the alternative experience with the Nemo sub ride, with the with the, the sleeping beauty castle walkthrough experience. Those are some, you know, kind of obvious examples, but quick question to you, as you've been able to go deep with this particular unique project and, really getting a broader understanding of the "specially abled" the disabilities of inclusive design. You know, my question is how should we approach attraction and experience design with the needs of our entire audience in mind? I mean, I'm asking that as a father of a deaf son and you know, we, you know, different kids with different types of dis learning disabilities you know, how do, how, how do we come across this if, if we're not experiencing some of this stuff ourselves. Freddy (03:26): Yeah. It's a, it's an amazing question to, to ponder and think about. And the you're hinting at a project that we're working on, which is really part of the mission of one of the biggest disability advocacy organizations in the world. And they've asked us to help create a space for them that tells ...

The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless, AFN programs were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them, and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programs available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The series began on NBC Radio as a summer replacement situation comedy in 1944, featuring vocalist Bea Wain. It then moved to ABC Radio with Jean Gillespie portraying Young's girlfriend Betty. The program was next broadcast by NBC for a 1946–47 run and was off in 1948. When it returned to NBC in 1949, Louise Erickson played Betty and Jim Backus was heard as wealthy and snobbish playboy Hubert Updike III, a character he later adapted as Thurston Howell III in Gilligan's Island. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

You're listening to Artie Wayne with Freddy Martin and His Orchestra and…   You're on the Sound Beat.   While Howard Hughes' aviation career is popularly associated with “The Spruce Goose”, the Hughes H-1 Racer set the landplane air-speed record in 1935, and it occupies a place in history that exists now, and may very well forever. Speaking of that, you're listening to Now and Forever, from Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony. It was used in the 1943 film, “The Outlaw”, which Hughes produced. As for  particular place in history: when the H1 broke the record by travelling at 352 mph, it was the last civilian plane to break it. As we know from Leonardo Dicaprio, and researchers, of course, Hughes was a man consumed with success. Upon crash-landing the H1 in its initial test run, he stepped from the downed plane and announced “We can fix her; she'll go faster”.

This is another of our salutes to the music and service that the Stage Door Canteens provided to military personnel during World War II. The Stage Door Canteen refers to the famous World War II-era Times Square social club for soldiers temporarily stationed in New York City awaiting deployment, usually to the war in Europe. It opened March 2, 1942, in a space underneath the 44th Street Theatre. The canteen was open seven nights a week and offered servicemen dancing, entertainment, food and nonalcoholic drinks, and even opportunities to rub shoulders with celebrities. And it all was FREE. The New York acting community did everything. They would perform songs, comedy, and short versions of the plays and musicals that were playing on Broadway. Actresses also served as hostesses and dancing partners. The New York Stage Door Canteen was immediately popular. The space was 40-by-80 feet and could accommodate 500 people, but it was filled to capacity from the start. Seven other canteens were later located in Boston, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Cleveland, San Francisco and Newark and Los Angeles. In 1943 the success of New York’s Stage Door Canteen prompted a movie about the popular service men's center and featured stars of the big screen and popular Big Bands. One of the many praiseworthy qualities of the canteens was their credo. They were open to all servicemen of every Allied nation, and without any form of segregation. As the war dragged on, the popularity of the canteens never wavered. By November 1945, Stage Door Canteens were operating in eight US cities and London and Paris. Together, they entertained and fed 11 million Allied servicemen. The only canteen to rival the original’s fame was the Hollywood Canteen in Los Angeles, thanks to its proximity to the country’s biggest stars. Instead of theater people, movie stars and crew members did the work. Hollywood Canteen, the movie, was the fourth highest grossing film of 1944. Watch both movies. You’ll be entertained and hear some great music. If you ever visit the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, you’ll see a replica of the Stage Door Canteen. We hope you enjoy this music of the Stage Door Canteens. Please accept this as a tribute to the Greatest Generation. To all our service members past and present, thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your service. Enjoy. - - - Join the conversation on Facebook at - - - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 or by email at - - - dannymemorylane@gmail.com - - - You’ll hear: 1) When Johnny Comes Marching Home by Glenn Miller & His Orchestra (with Marion Hutton, Tex Beneke & The Modernaires, vocals) 2) Comin' In On A Wing And A Prayer by The Song Spinners [The only song with a war connection to appear in the top twenty best-selling songs of 1943 in the US] 3) I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You) by Harry James & His Orchestra (with Dick Haymes, vocal) [Reached #1 on the Juke Box chart on 6/10/44 - Lasted 6 wks] 4) They're Either Too Young or Too Old by Bette Davis [From Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943), a film made as a World War II fundraiser, with the stars donated their salaries to the Hollywood Canteen, which was founded by John Garfield and Bette Davis] 5) Jingle, Jangle, Jingle by Kay Kyser & His Orchestra (with Julie Conway and Harry Babbitt & The Group, vocals) [A fan favorite from the Stage Door Canteen (1943) era] 6) Rosie The Riveter by Four Vagabonds [Rosie the Riveter was the star of a campaign aimed at recruiting female workers for defense industries during World War II] 7) She's a Bombshell from Brooklyn by Xavier Cugat [From the original film soundtrack of Stage Door Canteen (1943)] 8) Somebody Else Is Taking My Place by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra (with Peggy Lee, vocal) [Featured in the movie, Stage Door Canteen (1943)] 9) Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me) by Glenn Miller & His Orchestra (with Marion Hutton, Tex Beneke & The Modernaires, vocals) [Featured in the movie, Stage Door Canteen (1943)] 10) Till The End Of Time by Perry Como [Spent 19 weeks on the Best Seller chart, 9 weeks at #1 and a million seller] 11) V-Day Stomp by The Four Clefs (Johnny Green, Adam Cato, Melvin Chapman, Jack Martin) [A World War II classic] 12) Saturday Night (Is The Loneliest Night In The Week) by Frank Sinatra [Featured in the movie, Stage Door Canteen (1943)] 13) Mairzy Doats by The Merry Macs [Reached #1 on the Juke Box chart on 3/18/44 - Lasted 5 weeks] 14) Don't Worry Island by Freddy Martin & His Orchestra [From the original film soundtrack of Stage Door Canteen (1943)] 15) Why Don't You Do Right? by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra (with Peggy Lee, vocal) [Featured in the 1943 film, Stage Door Canteen and sold 1 million records] 16) Corns for My Country by The Andrews Sisters [From the original film soundtrack of The Hollywood Canteen (1944)] 17) Now Is The Hour (Maori Farewell Song) by Bing Crosby (with The Ken Darby Choir, vocals) [Became known as Po Atarau and was used as a farewell to Māori (the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand) soldiers going to off War] 18) Katharine Hepburn’ advice. Presented here as another bonus episode is one of the very earliest of the transcriptions. Time was not kind to the disk, and indeed it is a scratchy, tough listen (almost so tough we didn't release it). Brace yourself though, and listen past the poor quality to hear "The Bob Bain Trio" (!). It's Bob on guitar and vocals, with Sheldon Smith on piano and Jimmie Stutz on bass. We get to hear Bob's interpolation of "Lady Be Good" as an intro, and for the first and only time, the announcer tells us the title. Next up, Cole Porter's immortal "Night And Day". That's followed by a popular tune of the time, "Managua Nicaragua" which had been recorded by Freddy Martin, Guy Lombardo, and Kay Kaiser. "The Anniversary Song" follows, with yet another of Bob's clever arrangements. Then, "a hillbilly tune" with Bob singing "That's How Much I Love You". The trio brings it home and really shines on a bop blues tune, "Mop Mop". "Velvet melody" indeed, with apologies for the Oxnard grit...

Happy Halloween, party people! Join us on a strange and spooky journey to the Sixth Dimension as we discuss the soundtrack to FORBIDDEN ZONE! In the early 80s, Richard and Danny Elfman were straining to break free of the musical theatre circuit. Richard devised Forbidden Zone as a showcase for Danny's band, The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo, as well as a means of breaking into the film industry. The result is a wild pastiche of Vaudeville, stagecraft, animation and big band music produced completely outside the realms of studio filmmaking and any semblance of good taste. The soundtrack features tons of music from Oingo Boingo, as well as pieces cribbed from Cab Calloway, Freddy Martin and...er...The Three Stooges. It's a wicked blast of camp from start to finish, and we discuss it warts and all! These were the songs that our men in the service were listening to as they headed into battle. World War 2 changed the big bands. During this time there were recording bans and out of this the vocalists became very popular. Also, because of gas rationing the bands didn't get to tour as much. I hope you enjoy the selections on the show from the years of 1940 to 1945. Thank you for listening. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Freddy Martin was an American bandleader and tenor saxophonist. He led a band for many years in the 1930's but his real success came in 1941 with an arrangement from the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in Bb Minor. Martin recorded the piece instrumentally, but soon lyrics were put in and it was re-cut as "Tonight We Love" with Clyde Rogers' vocal – becoming his biggest hit. Russ Morgan was an American big band leader and arranger during the 1930s and 1940s. He was one of the composers of "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You" We will take a look at both of the bands and careers on this week's Big Band Bash. I hope you enjoy this look at two great bandleaders from the swing era. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com

Boston Symphony trumpeter Michael Martin joins Andrew & Lance to talk his career as a player, and composer. Michael joined the BSO in 2010 and has had great success there, building on the training which began with his dad (Freddy Martin). We discuss his days at Interlochen and Northwestern, touring with his brother (Chris Martin) and the Chicago Symphony and how his composing career got off the ground at an early age. He also discusses his favorite conductors, what it takes to be a good section player, how to listen and how to learn new repertoire really quickly. Oh, and he shares a hilarious rookie error story during a rehearsal of Mahler 2 under Michael Tilson Thomas. "20!" Frederick Alfred (Freddy) Martin (December 9, 1906 – September 30, 1983) was an American bandleader and tenor saxophonist.Orchestra leader Freddie Martin was not a jazz musician and never tried to be. Martin was, however, probably the most respected tenor saxophonist of the dance band era. The warmth and richness of his tone impressed even the most ardent of jazz performers and earned him the admiration of many. Martin's genius on his instrument also helped make his sweet orchestra one of the most musical of its time and propelled him on a bandleading career that spanned four decades.
