Book Vs. Movie: GypsyThe 1957 Memoir Vs. the 1962 Movie“Musicals in March!”The Margos celebrate another “Musicals in March” episode with Gypsy. Gypsy Rose Lee's 1957 memoir tells her real-life story of growing up in vaudeville and burlesque under the domineering influence of her mother, Rose Hovick. It paints a detailed picture of her childhood alongside her more naturally talented younger sister, June (later June Havoc), and how Gypsy (born Louise Hovick) eventually became the most famous burlesque performer of her time. The book is witty and self-deprecating and offers an unvarnished yet entertaining look at her complex relationship with her mother. The movie Gypsy is based on the successful 1959 Broadway musical by Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents, rather than directly on the memoir. It follows the same structure as the stage show, focusing on Rose Hovick's relentless push to make her daughters stars, culminating in Gypsy's rise to fame. However, because it was a Hollywood film, it softened some of the grittier aspects of Gypsy's story. So, which version did we prefer? Have a listen to find out!In this ep, the Margos discuss:A look at the career of Gypsy Rose Lee The different Broadway productions over the yearsThe cast includes Rosalind Russell (Rose Hovick,) Natalie Wood (Louise Hovick/Gypsy Rose Lee,) Karl Malden (Herbie Sommers,) Paul Wallace (Tulsa,) Ann Jillian (Dainty June,) Morgan Brittany (Baby June,) Parley Bear (Mr. Kringelein,) Harry Shannon (Grandpa,) Betty Bruce (Tessie Tura,) Faith Dane (Mazeppa,) Roxanne Arlen (Electra,) and Jean Willes as Betty Cratchitt. Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. We may not be fans of the person, we may never have heard of the person and we never know who we are going to find next...There are only 2 rules to this podcast. The book has to be found in a thrift shop and we are not allowed to talk about the book until we press record, which is sometimes agonising. We have lots of episodes coming up so if you find yourself enjoying our podcast, please be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear about each episode.
Sub to the PPM Patreon to access the entire 3 hour runtime of CULT OF CAGE PT. II: patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping (Full notes viewable via the link) An impromptu Halloween session w/ Orion St. Peter gave birth to this Nicolas Cage dbl feature—in which we discuss occult, cultic, & PTK themes in the loosely defined horror films "Longlegs" & "Mandy", tentpoles of the late Cage capitalism debt-induced “renaissance”. We dig deep into the interplay between the "Longlegs" narrative and director Oz Perkins's personal esoteric & intergenerational familial trauma history, sussing out the sources of inspiration in his own highly strange, quasi-aristocratic pedigree. For ex, his great-grandpa "Count" Wilhelm de Wendt de Kerlor, a psychic detective cum spy in the mold of PPM usual suspects Aleister Crowley or Erik Jan Hanussen who was a member of the Theosophical Society, an avid spiritualist, and supposedly the medium who prophesied tabloid journo & anti sex trafficking crusader W.T. Stead's death on the Titanic... We discuss his Italian great-gma, world-conquering designer (aka Chanel's rival) Elsa Schiaparelli & her affiliations with Dadaists & Surrealists like Dalí and Man Ray, not to mention the fact the de Gaulle government suspected her of collaborating with the 3rd Reich. We unpack how psychic detective de Kerlor appeared on the scene in New Hampshire to "investigate" a murder that two BOI agents linked to German espionage in the Northeast during WWI, and we discuss how de Kerlor & Schiaparelli would be surveilled & interviewed, Wilhelm seemingly under suspicion of serving as a foreign agent. These fascinating, little known histories re Oz Perkins's ancestors are an obvious touchpoint for the clairvoyant FBI agent Lee Harker in the glam Satanic serial-killing-by-sympathetic-magick-or-mind-control flick "Longlegs". We also talk about how it's conceivably 9/11 as Mass Ritual pilled, seeing as Oz's mom Berry Berenson died on Flight 11 on 9/11, which gives one a headrushing vertiginous feeling indeed... Seeing as she's descended from this Theosophist spy. Her BDay is repeatedly woven into the sigilistic & algorithmic subtext of the film. And we also discuss how, on the patrilineal side of Oz's family, his Dad Anthony Perkins's confessed childhood Oedipal complex, the early wished-for death of his father, his lifelong closeted life, and his ultimate succumbing to AIDs... How all of this informed the emotionally-charged, cathartic film & its unspoken traumatic seeds... As we go, our analysis of the film begins to force us to confront a theory where a kind of unstated CSA blackhole is the source of the the Longlegs mystery's gravitational pull. We talk: Mandy dir. Cosmatos's father George Pan Cosmatos's final film “The Shadow Conspiracy” which concerns a pres assassination by drone; both Panos & his Dad having Pan in their names; the Mansonian failed songwriter vibes of both villains Jeremiah Sands & Longlegs; the Mandy scene where a planned ritualized orgy lubricated with “the chemist's best batch” & hallucinogenic wasp injections derails when Mandy openly clowns on the cult leader; Longlegs's character obvs nodding at glam Satanism, Marc Bolan, & David Bowie's infamous “Station to Station”, Dion Fortune-informed exorcism of his possessed indoor pool in what was once stripper & burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee's LA manse; Longlegs's cinematic influences - Fincher fare like Se7en, Zodiac, etc; Silence of the Lambs; Don't Look Now; Altman; Twin Peaks; The Omen; New French Extreme; Gaspar Noe; & Phantasm Many thanks to Orion for jumping on for this spooky dbl feature at such short notice. For fans of musical theatre, Stephen Sondheim is one of the true titans – the genius who brought us Sweeney Todd and West Side Story, Into the Woods, and Company. With acclaimed revivals of his landmark shows regularly performed in London and New York, and new generations being introduced to the man who forever transformed musical theatre, Sondheim's legacy has only grown. What is it about such classic songs as ‘Being Alive' from Company, ‘No One Is Alone' from Into the Woods, or ‘Send in the Clowns' from A Little Night Music (to name but a few) that still resonates for so many? In How Sondheim Can Change Your Life (Atria Books (North America) Ebury (UK and Commonwealth), 2024), Dr. Richard Schoch shows how Sondheim's greatness (beyond the clever lyrics and adventurous music) lies in his ability to tell stories that speak to all of us. From Louise's desire for freedom as Gypsy Rose Lee to Sweeney Todd's thirst for revenge, the struggles we see in Sondheim's characters are ones we all have – and we can learn valuable lessons from how those struggles are resolved. Following the arc of Sondheim's extraordinary career, How Sondheim Can Change Your Life is rich with stories and insights into the master's creative process, and reveals the many ways that Sondheim's works can enrich the lives of all of us. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. EPISODE 1927: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Abbot Kahler, author of WHERE YOU END, about writing unnerving literature for unnerving timesAbbott Kahler (formerly Karen Abbott) is the author of four New York Times bestselling works of narrative nonfiction. A search for an ancestor who went missing in 1905 led her to write Sin in the Second City, which tells the true story of two sisters who ran the world's most famous brothel and the nationwide battle to shut them down. Her interest in Gypsy Rose Lee, the subject of American Rose, stems from stories her grandmother shared about the ecdysiast's performances in the 1930s and 40s. Liar Temptress Soldier Spy was inspired by a six-year stint in Atlanta, where the ghosts of the Civil War still seem omnipresent. The HBO show Boardwalk Empire introduced her to bootlegger George Remus, the subject of The Ghosts of Eden Park and a character much more fascinating than Al Capone. Then Came the Devil, her next nonfiction book, is by far the most outrageous story she's ever encountered. Her debut novel, Where You End, is inspired by a true story of identical twins and amnesia, and will be out next January. USA Today once named her “a pioneer of sizzle history.” Abbott's books have featured as Indie Next picks, Amazon's best books of the year, Library Journal's best books of the year, and Smithsonian Magazine's best history books of the year. She has also been a finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime, the Goodreads book award for history, and the Ohioana Book Awards, the second oldest state literary prize in the country. She has written for newyorker.com, New York Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Smithsonian Magazine, and other publications, and has appeared on the History Channel, CBS Sunday Morning, AMC's "Making of the Mob,” the Discovery Channel, and other media outlets. Her books have been optioned for television and film, and her podcast about George Remus, REMUS: THE MAD BOOTLEG KING, is forthcoming from iHeartRadio. bAbbott is a native of Philadelphia, where she spent six years as a journalist, covering crime, advocating for abused women, and hanging out with mafia bosses and baseball wives. She lives in New York City and in Greenport, New York, where she's convinced her little bungalow is haunted. She appreciates a good poker hand, an old bottle of wine, and the never-ending hunt for new stories to tell. Read the strange story behind her name change here. You can follow her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, or sign up for her (monthly or so) Wicked History newsletter.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.

Plus, we'll hear her opposite Howard Duff as Sam Spade's latest client in "The Hot Hundred Grand Caper" (originally aired on CBS on September 19, 1948).

According to this website Roger (1954 - 1982) was an American gay porn star who appeared in pornographic movies in the 1970s. After an early career as a model and go-go boy from age 17, he appeared as a "Discovery" centerfold in "Blueboy" magazine, Roger appeared in many film loops of the pre-condom era, co-starring with other notable porn stars of the time, including Al Parker, Jack Wrangler, Chuck Samson, and Bruno. Roger was also a popular stage performer in gay nightclubs and theaters. Roger left the adult film industry in 1980 and in 1982, en route to Las Vegas, perished in a car accident. In 2000, an imposter posing as Roger appeared on a number of Yahoo! groups, but was soon exposed as a fraud. He told stories of having attended Al Parker's memorial service in 1992, remaining in touch with co-star Jack Wrangler, and maintaining a monogamous relationship since the late 1980s while living in a suburb of Chicago. First of all Happy Late Mom's day! I was at family reunion so no computer. Was supposed to post this Sunday.. April and I do part 2 of Stage Moms. Today we talk about Ginger Rogers mom Lela. She would do anything to make her daughter a star, and she did. Ginger as we all know was amazingly talented, she trusted her Lela and Lela was not only her mom, she was her BFF. That wasn't too great for any of Gingers 5 hubby's. Studio execs loathed her, and it's alleged the movie The Hard Way was based on Lela and Ginger. Ida Lupino starred as Joan Leslies big sister that will do anything to make sis a star...and she did. The picture of Ginger and Lew Ayers in front of their wedding cake..I'll post.. RUN LEW, RUN. Their marriage lasted under two years. Lew thought three's a crowd and literally told her to back to Lela's home.. Again thanks to Deborah for the idea. Our final four are pretty rotten moms. Next up Betty Grable, then Shirley Temple, Natalie Wood, and Gypsy Rose Lee's mom, Rose Hovick.. Thanks to my partner in crime April. The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
