Note: Do you hate it when politics are discussed in places you go for sports? Then skip this episode entirely or skip to 36:19. Things Discussed after 36:19 Leak to Thamel says NCAA told Michigan they'll suspend Sherrone for CMU and Nebraska. Sam: Leak is overblown—it's part of the back and forth with Michigan, not something that's been accepted. Would we take it? Brian thinks it's harsh but if this ends it, fine—you kowtow to the power and move on. Thamel aside, let's go over what Sherrone did. Facts we are relatively certain of: Sherrone deleted all of his texts off his phone around the time the Stalions thing came out, knowing he still has a copy of them. He then went and retrieved the texts for the investigators, and there was nothing incriminating on them. Seth: The question I have is whether he deleted those texts because he regularly cleans his phone, or was that unusual behavior? If it happens regularly this is just trying to make an innocuous thing sound as bad as they can. If it was unusual, then yeah, considering he's the coach now (he wasn't then), and considering how important we value transparency from people in positions of power, a two-week suspension (week->not an Urban Meyer suspension where you just sit out the game) is appropriate. Craig: Is it? If he did nothing wrong, why should he deserve a punishment? It's not a crime to not cover up what's not a crime. [Hit the JUMP for the rest of the discussion, the player, and video and stuff] Things Discussed before 36:19: Santa Ono's departure and academic freedom (from start of the show): Turns out he was just another suit. Taking $3 million and taking his name of something he signed 2 weeks ago and go do what Ron DeSantis tells him tells you all you need to know. People are going to try to pretend this was taking a stand against the regents or because The Hammer is coming down or that this is about Warde's stance on NIL—whatever stupid narrative they want to believe in. People try to make everything fit the story they want to tell. You'd have to be a quisling to work at the University of Florida. Some empathy because becoming the face of something like that is a life-defining choice, and the nature of the job is you're going to have unreasonable people mad at you because, e.g., they think divesting Michigan from Intel will stop Netanyahu from killing Gazans to placate the far-right members of his coalition that are keeping him out of jail. Part of being the president of Michigan is you are going to have to take a stand for liberalism (as defined). Justice, knowledge, freedom of study: these liberal ideals are the foundational principles of our school, and our school is the best public university in the country. When those ideals are challenged, as they are now by an illiberal authoritarian administration in Washington, you have to tell them "No." And no, this isn't about their DEI policies either. The DEI Office was already was already the midst of being rearranged. And to be clear (Brian said, and I generally agree) we're in favor of that, because the expense of the university's bureaucracy (1 administrator to 5 students—don't quote us on that) is too much, and that money is better off being spent on housing, on improving the Go Blue Guarantee, and on more and better instructors. The most direct parts of the policy (e.g. student housing assistance) were also better off shifted, along with their funding, to parts of the administration that were already doing the same things, and the layers of forms and oversight were probably not the best way of accomplishing the admirable and necessary goal of taking responsibility for an equity of experience for students of certain minorities. Need to be clear: When the White House says "DEI" they aren't talking about Michigan's DEI office nor which books are in the library; they're talking about things like whether I can give a lecture to Dooley's class every semester on the history of integration in college athletics, or whether Women's Studies can be a subject matter. Next president, next on NIL (17 minutes) Next president: what do we want? Brian thinks it'll be another administrator off an expensive search. Seth thinks there are going to be big names calling the school because it's a prestigious job. We need someone who has values, someone who is going to stand up for the university, and (let's not forget) someone who is going to value athletics as an essential engine of the school's value. Brian's not concerned about that so much because the donors won't sit around long if we drop to 126th/134 teams in passing. It's not the donors worrying about that; it's the parts of the school that usually get lots of donations making that a concern. NIL: House settlement is going to include some sort of auditing process that is going to curtail the amount you can directly spend via NIL on players. Don't know how enforceable that is going to be. Congress is going to step in eventually to provide them an antitrust exemption or they're just going to keep getting sued. They might have done it by classifying the players as labor but that's unlikely if it happens now given the party in power who'd be crafting legislation right now is extremely anti-labor. We should say what we want in a president for Athletics: stand up for Michigan when the NCAA goes after them. Brian: Probably won't be facing any significant decisions since the big sports all have relatively new coaches (Why do you always say that?) What they need is someone who will have a spine. The Michigan community will support you. Seth: I'm not just looking for someone who'll rebel; I'm looking for someone who's going to win. Losing funding—which the government gave to the University not as a handout but because the People of the United States want, e.g., a cure for cancer and Michigan can put together the tools and best people to do that. Losing that funding would be devastating. It's not like they just stop doing the research—they already built the labs and financed it, so they'd be under water and lose capability to get it back. Brian: It's going to happen anyways. This is an administration of idiots making decisions based on wanting to hurt the people they don't like, and the University of Michigan is a bright blue beacon of every kind of value and kind of person they want to eradicate. Seth: So we don't just need a fighter; we need a uniter—someone who is going to get all the other institution's administrators (sorry, the faculty isn't the same thing), so when war comes they can win, or at least make it hurt. The towns that resisted the Danes got slaughtered and the towns that paid a danegeld just got more Danes; Alfred beat them by forming England. In the break: MGoBlog's readership, based on Google Analytics on how people voted for national offices, was about 55-45 Democrats to Republicans when I took over advertising in 2012. It's now close to 75-25, without shifting any other metrics about our readership, meaning we're still talking to (a lot more of) the same kind of (educated, hyper-curious) person, but that kind of person, if they ever were a Republican, is leaving the party now.

Connor Stalions sat down for an interview with On3 Sports that was published on Friday afternoon. Stalions made headlines by talking about his goal to become a head coach for Michigan football in the future and alleging Ohio State football knew the defensive plays for Michigan in 2018 and 2019. Let's unpack the latest updates in the Connor Stalions saga. In terms of college sports, Ohio is home to several renowned universities that have successful athletic programs. The Ohio State University Buckeyes, in particular, are widely recognized for their football team, which consistently ranks among the top contenders in the NCAA. Additionally, the University of Cincinnati Bearcats and the Xavier University Musketeers have established themselves as competitive forces in basketball. In terms of professional sports, Ohio boasts teams in all major sports leagues. The Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals represent the state in the NFL, while the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cincinnati Reds are iconic franchises in the NBA and MLB respectively. Ohio also has a beloved NHL team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, who have gained a loyal fan base. The state's passion for sports is evident through its dedicated fan bases, enthusiastic crowds, and the many talented athletes who have emerged from Ohio. From notable figures like LeBron James and Urban Meyer to the successful high school sports scene, Ohio truly embraces the spirit of competition and sportsmanship.
Things Discussed: Mostly we discussed the Dellinger Leak and Michigan's response to the NCAA re: Signgate. I'll have a UV later today on it. Michigan has a very—extremely—strong case that they did very little wrong. Most of the in-person scouting was for teams not on their schedule, all of the evidence for a coverup is flimsy: Sherrone deleted texts: Only off his phone, because he knew they had imaging, those were provided to the NCAA, and they were completely innocuous. Mike Hart was told that Stalions was "extra" which: yeah. That's it! That's all the evidence! Most of the report is just a glimpse into how sign operations worked—Stalions was sharing signs with Rutgers and Nebraska, who just used wristbands when they played Michigan. It also showed just how marginal sign-decoding was: Sherrone was told to change his signs before Ohio State and said he'll "think about it," Partridge yelled at Stalions about trying to use a team manager, etc. It has a name! Signal organization stupid thing, or S.O.S.T. NCAA's position is basically "We know we broke our bylaws and this isn't remotely just, but we need to humiliate you because look how mad all the Bielemas are." Michigan has requested a prehearing because the NCAA has at least one in-house source that refused to be identified, which we've just now learned is apparently against NCAA bylaws. No idea if the COI has to grant that prehearing The process is meant to be collaborative; it completely breaks down when the two sides have entirely different realities and goals. That's a big problem for Michigan because the NCAA's purpose here isn't to be reasonable or just. The fear here is NCAA's main motivation is relevance; they can't do anything about paying players, which has been their raison d'être, so this is the one field where they can demonstrate any kind of power. Legal challenge? Seems they'll go that route if things proceed as they seem to be. Guessing that's what the NCAA wants so they can placate the Bielemas by saying "it was the courts, not us." Seth: don't underestimate the difficulty of winning this case in court. Like the Tony Petitti thing, when it's not about constitutionality or the law, courts often default to whatever the agreement between parties is, and Michigan's agreed to be under NCAA judgment whether it's fair or not. With Tennessee: 1) It was their attorney general flexing power on behalf of the only thing his state cares about, which isn't who Dana Nessel is or how Michigan politics work, and 2) that was about paying players, which got into a constitutionality issue of denying the free trade of services. Guess how it plays out: NCAA goes overboard, Michigan takes them to court, court takes a long time, and when it's settled nobody cares because it's been too long and we all have more important things going on. Story Time: Just like 1928! Non-S.O.S.T. thing: Jim Knowles off to PSU for a lot of money! What does it mean? It means anyone who can is getting away from Ohio State fans.

Michigan football assistant Connor Stalions had an uncanny knack for the art of sign stealing - the perfectly legal practice of deciphering opponents' signals to gain an on-field advantage. Stalions credited hard work and research for his success. But the NCAA believed he'd broken the rules by sending friends and family to other games to illegally scout teams in advance. The scandal rocked the sport, launched a thousand memes, forced Stalions out of football, and cast a cloud over Michigan's undefeated season. In UNTOLD: Sign Stealer, Stalions tells his story for the first time, showing his methodical preparation and answering questions about whether he went too far to give his team a leg up. It asks was Stalions the best who ever did it…or was he a cheater? It also probes why college football was willing to turn a blind eye to the practice until now. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews director Micah Brown. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched UNTOLD: Sign Stealer yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

What does Stalions admit to?
The Netflix documentary on the former Michigan football staffer, Connor Stalions, was released today, detailing his role in Michigan's sign stealing scandal that is currently under investigation by the NCAA. In the documentary, Stalions was seen lying to a board of NCAA directors claiming that he wasn't at the Central Michigan game... only to be proven that he lied 10 seconds later in the documentary by Barstool's Dave Portnoy. They react to Connor Stalions new job in the second hour before having a fierce debate on whether Dan Campbell should play the Lions' starters against the Chiefs tomorrow or not in the third. Then, the guys discuss some sporting events they'd like to go to in the future in the final hour.

We break down the Michigan investigation results by the NCAA, which the punishments came out today. (5:50) Connor Stalions, Sherrone Moore, and Jim Harbaugh at the center of these investigations. DraftKings becomes the first sportsbook to impose surcharge taxes on winnings. (28:50) In recent news DraftKings has announced that in certain states that impose high taxes on DraftKings, such as Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, and Vermont, they will be imposing surcharges on bettors' winnings. Sunday a draft of the NCAA Notice of Allegations against the Michigan football program for the Connor Stalions scandal leaked to ESPN. According to the report, a number of former Michigan staffers, including former head coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter could be facing Level 1 violations, and current Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore deleted more than 50 text messages with Stalions and could be facing a suspension or show-cause penalty.Tony Gerdeman of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to discuss the latest developments in the story, and what they could mean for Moore and the Michigan program moving forward.
-A draft of the NCAA's notice of allegations shows that Moore is accused of deleting more than 50 text messages between himself and Stalions; right now this is at a Level 2 violation-Investigators allege that multiple team interns and at least one full-time employee knew about the scheme and participated in it, after Stalions had told them it was not against the rules (!!!)Show sponsored by 1890 NEBRASKAOur Sponsors:* Check out BetterHelp: betterhelp.com/EARLYBREAKAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Things Discussed: Storytime with Craig: some of the criticism of Dotman has gotten weird. Also weird: people still trying to talk about a bowl ban. Sam asked people in Athletics and they've heard nothing about Stalions on the CMU sideline: CMU fired a coach who was most connected to Stalions, which if you put 1 and 1 together means they figured out how Stalions got on the Chips' sideline. It also proves signs don't matter much because CMU couldn't beat a crap MSU team; in fact at no point did you think they knew what was coming. Sam: Helps Michigan prove to the NCAA that Stalions was a rogue actor. Phonebooks: Enow Etta is a tackle, a lot of young tackles are now big enough to be viable inside, Sam pumps breaks on whether the freshmen can help. Barham was 230 as a recruit and 230 at Maryland, now 245. Reading tea leaves that suggests he got serious about weights at Michigan, versus when he was a near 5-star recruit in College Park they just said you go out there and do you. Better defense this year? Question isn't up front, it's who's going to give them the play diagnoses that they got from Mike Sainristil and Rod Moore. Sam says Will Johnson and Makari Paige can do it. Zeke Berry: players are seeing the athlete we saw as a recruit, but if they want to go with more blitzing they can get away with leaving Jyaire in man like they couldn't as much with Wallace. Berry is a blitzer in ways that Sainristil wasn't. Dax-like? Not pure speed but athleticism yeah. Craig's hot take: 13th scholarship for basketball should go to Jamal Crawford.

Things Discussed: Lost Herbert: Recruiting against Jim is tough. DC: Zach Orr has a couple of NFL opportunities now so figuring that out will be the most important thing. Concerned that this administration is going to Bennie Oosterbaan Sherrone Moore's program. Needs to not just support but lead the transition to a new version of the college football landscape. Beefing up recruiting department: can criticize Jim Harbaugh here because he spent recruiting jobs on hires like Stalions and Shemy. Sherrone going hard for ND's Chad Bowden. Fended off Harbaugh for Grant Newsome, fighting for Elston. Warde: His "transformational not transactional" interview was the end for us; he's not the guy for the future. Transactional means fair; when you say you don't want that you're saying you don't want the players getting a fair deal. Michigan's culture doesn't have to be these 1930s ideas. Hunter Dickinson would be here if we had this working right. There's more in the tank: Michigan's Athletics department doesn't need to be taking money for naming buildings. NCAA dysfunction has to be part of this. We should be leading the way towards fixing the system, not pretending the old system still works. Players don't benefit from everyone being a free agent because it makes them all replaceable. That system sucks for everybody because there's no investment in the players, there's less time to get to know your system, and nobody's getting an education. Right now we're hanging onto a system that's already dead, falling into a terrible oligarchic system. System should be one that forces the universities to be stuck with the players they get, because it makes them responsible for the player's education and development. Right now the NCAA is antithetical to the higher ideal the NCAA was set up. Seth: communist economies—that's what the NCAA model is—require a black market. The cheating is part of the system. What we're seeing is the fall of that system, and what Michigan should be doing is leading the way to a new system. How? Pay our players to be in a Super Bowl commercial advocating for a player's union, which we start here. Seth & Brian argue whether the history of Oosterbaan/1950s is relevant today.
Today on 2 Pros and a Cup of Joe, the Bowl season was ruined by opt-outs and the transfer portal, but was this season a one-off? Tarlin and Mike kick things off chatting about Tarlin's recent trip to Barbados, including some turbulent flights thanks to Tropical Storm Tammy. But we quickly segue into a step challenge Tarlin is participating in, where he's determined to beat his very competitive and fit coworkers. He's even wondering if there are any tricks to game the step counters. We're open to suggestions. We then dive into the main topic - cheating scandals in sports. We discuss famous examples like Spygate with the Patriots taping opponents' signals, the Astros' trash can sign-stealing scheme, and MLB's steroid era. An interesting debate emerges around whether cheating can ever be justified if you can pay the fines and it leads to success, especially with ultra-competitive coaches like Belichick and Harbaugh. The latest cheating drama in Michigan football takes center stage next. A rogue staffer named Connor Stalions had been illegally filming opponents' sidelines for years, but the heat is now on head coach Jim Harbaugh about how much he knew. Tarlin runs through Michigan's futility against rival Ohio State during Stallions' tenure to question whether the cheating even helped. We joke about the excuses around Stalions "acting alone" when several coaches were likely involved. We consider just how high up it goes as we think through how it relates to Uber, Air BnB, and even OpenAI. We touch on connections to our current political landscape along the way. In the end, we explore how rules in sports often have to catch up to new techniques for gaining an advantage. And many innovative companies follow a similar path - they're willing to break rules early on if it means gaining market share, and they'll pay the fine down the road if needed. An interesting perspective heading into the big Michigan vs. Ohio State grudge match in The Game. Subscribe to Running It Back wherever you listen to podcasts. Now also available on Youtube.

Featured Musician: Desmond Jones The Video: [After THE JUMP: The things said.] --------------------- 1. Signs, Stalions, and the Law, wsg Richard Hoeg starts at the top Partridge is out the door; the rest broke during or after the segment. We scheduled our lawyer friend Hoeg (YouTube Channel) because we thought we'd have a hearing right now instead of things breaking that we were just hearing about last night. Michigan's case was stronger than the Big Ten's but the hole in Michigan's case for a TRO was they had to prove irreparable harm, and considering the Vegas line didn't move for Harbaugh being out they had a tough case to prove there. It's always better to settle than litigate; it's not clear that this was a legal settlement. 2. Maryland Preview starts at 18:29 Hi Josh Gattis! Taulia Tagovailoa is the same player he's been for years. He doesn't ruin red zone drives by running backwards 30 yards *as often* but his accuracy still comes and goes because he's short and often throwing off-platform. OL looks like they can stop the pass rush but that's probably because the #1 way to contain Ta-Ta is to contain him. They also have just one really solid starter (LT Delmar Glaze) and a sub-FBS right side. Running game is awful. WRs aren't the dudes they used to be. Defensively they're kind of an MSU where everyone is meh. Some of the NFL prospects haven't matured into such, no real stars. Barham was supposed to break out but is having a Colsonesque sophomore year. Pass-rusher gets a lot of pressures but only on high volume. They will put five up and blitz. 3. Basketball starts at 36:30 Might want to pump the breaks on the 3-0 start if you're basing it on St. John's because we don't really know what Theseus's Pitino Team really is. Dug's the headliner—MEEP MEEP—and his speed was devastating to a defense that doesn't know each others' names. Shooting is due for a mean regression, probably, but they keep having someone go off every game. Defensively it's night and day from last year, and some of the breakdowns are because they're not yet used to the fact that they don't need to help each other. T-Will has slimmed down, and contextually he's a much better defender when he's not put on a court with a bunch of non-athletes. 4. Penn State After Review starts at 52:46 Blocking had a lot more mishaps than usual, probably because of the crowd noise and their difficulty snapping it. Barnhart's troubles weren't necessarily his fault because those DEs were timing the snaps perfectly. RPS was +10 despite not passing for 36 minutes because PSU was incapable of stopping themselves from flying upfield. Defensively Michigan played their OSU defense on 1st downs which bled 5 yards before they tightened up. Paige had a good day flying down to stop that. Grant broke out. Will Johnson is the prince that was promised. Colson reverted to his Janus ways. Michigan could close the door when they needed to. Featured Musician: Chirp The Video: [After THE JUMP: The things said.] --------------------- 1. Sign-Gate and Penn State Preview: Defense starts at the top No news unless the Big Ten hands down a suspension to a coach who's already in Happy Valley, which would on its owns be grounds for a judge to issue an immediate injunction. We infer from Michigan's letter that the B10's case right now is as substantial as your average Ohio State twitterer, and that putting this in the realm of courts where facts matter more than what amoral hypocrites want to believe dramatically alters the parameters. Local sports radio probably isn't where you should be going for investigative news—the thing about Michigan having other schools for Stalions operations feels bogus on the surface. The Penn State defense is very good. The engine is the ends—even if Chop Robinson isn't full-go they have three more very good ones. DTs aren't bad; there's one whom Alex likes but Seth thinks he's exploitable. They blitz a lot, play a lot of man, got beat by Ohio State because Kalen King really isn't the star he's made out to be. Manny Diaz effect. The way Michigan loses this game is turnover. 2. Penn State Preview: Offense starts at 26:39 They torch bad defenses who can't pressure Drew Allar, who's 39% accurate when off-platform and 78% accurate when his feet are set. We saw the same thing last year. Only have one receiver. RBs are having Donovan Edwards-like years—Allen can do RB things but Singleton is kind of a gadget guy. OL cannot run block; they can pass protect okay. Theo Johnson is having to be their 2nd receiver. Why pick Michigan over the spread on this one: PSU is bult to blow up a UMass but fall off a cliff when you can match up to them athletically. Stunts are a big problem for them. Wild that they can't develop OL; Seth notes he talked to recruit's dad who said his kid's already more developed than Fashanu. 3. Basketball starts at 45:27 They're scoring! Dug is seeing the court well, though he won't be shooting 60 percent with a 40 percent assist rate. Nkamhua has been a revelation—immediately a captain, exactly what we want for a one-and-done. Imagine Tray Jackson instead of Caleb Houstan or Jett Howard. Quantum leap defensively. Having athletic defenders out there means you can use a T-Will or a Tschetter because they're not so athletically exposed. Need a backup PG—gonna be a nervous few months waiting until Llewellen gets healthy. 4. Purdue After Review starts at 57:36 Our Michigan homerism apparently extends to defending JJ McCarthy's performance as REALLY GOOD YOU GUYS, except this is a defensible position (and PFF agreed). His marginal throws are still very catchable, and when they're caught nobody notices. YMMV on 4 or 5 of them but even if then it was a excellent day from him. Not a good day from the OL; Seth thinks these guys are all guards recruited for a run-first offense and this is kind of what happens against an opponent who makes you pass-first and has two great edge rushers. Defensively it's really hard to beat Michigan because they can put five guys against your five guys and someone will win a block to get your back. It was the Will Johnson Show otherwise—he was doing things away from the ball as well as coming to it. About the Featured Musician: CHIRP This year we are partnering with The Blind Pig for bumper music, since that's where I've seen most of the bands I've been pushing anyways. This is the week we're featuring the four-piece Ann Arbor band Chirp, which has a funky rock/jazz fusion thing going on. Their live shows are the main thing; they have a dedicated fanbase who remind me of Deadheads of a generation earlier even if the musical style isn't any more jam band than anything else. The music is bright and catchy and keeps you on your toes; they're at their best when just getting lost in the music because there's some real musicians with proggy ideas under all the good times. They've been touring since 2015 and return to the Pig next week. Song choices: Solo By the Book Move Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken now now, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat
Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI's Pat Forde pick this weekend's biggest college football games against the spread & provide their thoughts on Michigan's response to the Big Ten as rumors of a suspension for Jim Harbaugh circulate through the sports world. After being notified of a Big Ten investigation, Michigan was given the opportunity to respond with any claims or information that may exonerate them in the Connor Stalions sign-stealing saga. Michigan is attempting to put the pressure on Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti with their aggressive statements. A few central questions remain with the developments: how will a judge handle this case from a legal perspective & did Jim Harbaugh know the extent to which Stalions went to in order to get the signs? In on-the-field news, NC State quarterback MJ Morris is opting to redshirt this season after playing four games for the Wolfpack. With Morris at QB, NC State has won 3 out of their last 4 games, but the signal caller is looking to preserve another year of eligibility instead of closing out the season.Meanwhile, Quinn Ewers has been upgraded to day-to-day status as Texas is looking to finish the year strong with upcoming games against TCU, Iowa State & Texas Tech. The Longhorns' win over Alabama will prove to be very useful if they can win out, as they hold all tiebreakers against the Crimson Tide. Before making their picks for Race for the Case, the guys share their most interesting games of the week, which includes a hot Arizona team, some Mountain West action and the always-interesting Miami Hurricanes. To close out the podcast, the guys give their picks against the spread for the #3 ranked Michigan Wolverines at the #10 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, the #18 ranked Utah Utes visiting the #5 ranked Washington Huskies, the #13 ranked Tennessee Volunteers at the #14 ranked Missouri Tigers, the #9 ranked Ole Miss Rebels taking on the #2 ranked Georgia Bulldogs, the USC Trojans at the #6 ranked Oregon Ducks and as always, Dan, Ross & Pat give their locks of the week.1:00 - Michigan responds to the Big Ten34:37 - NC State quarterback MJ Morris is redshirting41:34 - Quinn Ewers is now day-to-day46:29 - Most interesting games of the weekend54:39 - #3 Michigan @ #10 Penn State57:45 - #18 Utah @ #5 Washington59:34 - #13 Tennessee @ #14 Missouri1:01:09 - #9 Ole Miss @ #2 Georgia1:03:16 - USC @ #6 Oregon1:04:31 - Locks of the weekFollow Dan @DanWetzelFollow Pat @ByPatFordeFollow Ross @RossDellenger

After we found out Stalions started a vacuum cleaner business, we asked our listeners to get creative
From 'The Daily Ticket' (subscribe here): Another day and more reports have come to light in the Michigan Sign Stealing Scandal. Not only did Michigan give evidence to the Big Ten claiming that Ohio State and Rutgers used Wolverines stolen signs to help Purdue against the Wolverines in the Big Ten Title game, but former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions was also found out to have a LLC with star Michigan running back Blake Corum. Corum, however, denies having a business partnership with Stalions. The talking heads at ESPN are also calling for Michigan to be left out of the CFP and today could be the day the Big Ten finally decides to suspend Jim Harbaugh. There's so much going on and Jeff Riger takes your through each and every detail on the latest episode of The Daily Ticket. Well, Connor Stalions is out, the NCAA found nothing linking Jim Harbaugh to Stalions and the Wolverines are easily 2-0 since the sign-stealing allegations became public knowledge. Mix all of that in a bowl, with different media people reporting on all parts of this scandal in very different ways, and you have quite a storm when it comes to Michigan Football. However, the Wolverines are still rolling at 9-0 and will be tested, really for the first time, this weekend in Happy Valley. Now it's time for things to really get interesting because the game on the field is finally going to be competitive and worth talking about like everything off the field has been. The Wolverines are going to face some legitimate competition for the first time in 2023. That's not Michigan's fault, but it is true. Penn State hasn't looked great this year, but probably looked their best just last week while throttling Maryland, 51-15. People are definitely excited to watch Michigan play another highly talented team so that way we can talk about football versus everything else.
Happy Wednesday! Buckeyes stay at #1, Blake Corum gets added to the Stalions drama, Adam Schefter joins at 12:33pm, Fool's Paradise at 12:48pm, ESPN CFB Writer Heather Dinich joins at 1:33pm, Jim Knowles on when he knew Jermaine Matthews would make an impact this season, Rodgers walks back his return to play comments, and Hockey & Hounds w/ John Davidson at 2:33pm!
M&BR discusses the latest breaking news and intel surrounding the Michigan sign stealing investigation including coordinated efforts by multiple Michigan programs to steal signs, and the NCAA finding no connection between Stalions actions and Jim Harbaugh.
Stop me if you've heard this before: There's cheating going on in college sports and no one knows what to do about it. Actually, the situation that has arisen with the University of Michigan's football program is still at the alleged status, as there have been no official findings and no admissions of guilt in a matter where there are accusations that the Wolverines, or people on their behalf, have been stealing signs from the opposition. For the record, the Michigan head coach, Jim Harbaugh, the brother of the Ravens' John Harbaugh, has explicitly denied knowledge or complicity in the matter. But, in a world that traffics in the credo that if you ain't cheatin,' you ain't tryin,' it's hard to take Jim Harbaugh or any college coach seriously. Numerous outlets are reporting that Connor Stalions, who is listed as a Michigan recruiting analyst, has developed a rather intricate system of pilfering opponents' signs. Allegedly, Stalions, a Navy grad and Marine Corps captain, was in charge of a network where people watched Michigan's opponents in advance of games and reported back what they saw. Or they recorded the signs and transmitted their findings to a central location. While you're allowed to decipher signs in the moment, NCAA rules do not permit you to do it using advance intelligence or by audio or video recordings. The NCAA, the college sports governing body, has launched a preliminary inquiry into the allegations. That could blossom into a full blown investigation especially if the interrogators find something on Stalions' computer. Now, to be clear, sign stealing is a way of life, not only in football, but in baseball and other sports where communications between the sidelines and the playing field can be intercepted. That sort of thing hardly seems, well, sporting, especially in a game like football that sells itself on honor and character and truth from man to man and among teams themselves. And this seems particularly noteworthy on the college level, where coaches sit in the living rooms of potential recruits and pledge to moms and dads that they will turn their callow boys into men of integrity. This current allegation finds Michigan and Harbaugh in a particularly precarious position. The coach, who led his alma mater to the Final Four of football last year and who is leading the No.2 ranked team in the nation this season, is already on a dangerous limb, ethically speaking. The NCAA believes that Harbaugh may have lied about meeting with recruits during a time when he wasn't supposed to. The university suspended the coach for the first three games of this season in an attempt to forestall further punishment, but that case and this case combined could be the end of the line for Harbaugh in Ann Arbor. Of course, there's been scuttlebutt that Jim Harbaugh was looking to rejoin his brother back in the pro ranks even before all this. You see, in the pros, what you might call cheating is known as gamesmanship. And gamesmanship just might suit Jim Harbaugh to a T. And that's how I see it for this week. College football has been hit by scandal after scandal recently, so I had to pull in my college football experts to help me break it all down! P.D. of the Gamecocks Football Captain's Log and Brett of Brett's Bets join me to talk about everything going on in the world of college football AND we get a special guest appearance from The Expert to pick some of this weekend's games! First, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney had a showdown with Tyler from Spartanburg about the Tigers' awful season. Who was right? Who was wrong? And why did Tyler's call remind me of one of rap's most famous diss tracks? We also talk about why Clemson's program has been on a downward trend and if we expect to see Dabo coaching somewhere else soon! Next up, Michigan is in hot water over a sign-stealing scandal. How big of a deal is it really though? And when does cheating cross the line? Also, we talk about whether we think Jim Harbaugh knew about it, if the College Football Playoff Committee should factor it into their rankings, and Connor Stalions' chances of becoming a head coach. Then, Deion Sanders has far exceeded expectations in his first year as Colorado's head coach, but his offensive linemen haven't and he decided to let them know about it. Is this different from how college football coaches typically handle poor play? Will it inspire his players to do better? And we discuss how the criticism Coach Prime has received so far sometimes misses the mark. Finally, Iowa has one of the worst offenses we've seen. As a result, they announced offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz won't return next season. Will this make Thanksgiving Dinner awkward since his dad, Kirk, is the head coach? Will Kirk leave too? How quickly would Brett fire his own son? And we laugh at some ridiculous stats from the Hawkeyes' season so far. As a bonus, we also give Brett the chance to rant about South Carolina football for a bit! Tap into this one and don't forget to check out the Gamecocks Football Captain's Log every Wednesday morning and Brett's Bets every Friday morning on the Beyond The Arc with Brandon Silvers YouTube Channel! Another day, another layer of weirdness surrounding the Michigan football program and the sign-stealing allegations. The latest — a gentleman resembling Connor Stalions on Central Michigan's sideline earlier this year as the Chippewas took on Michigan State. If it is Stalions, he's in full CMU coaching garb, with sunglasses on at a night game (and they might even record video), while rocking an uncharacteristic goatee and potentially a wig. As Michigan prepares to absolutely obliterate Purdue on Saturday, there is definitely a black cloud hanging over the program. Other coaches and athletic directors from the Big Ten are calling for Jim Harbaugh's head, even though nothing has been proven yet and no governing body has formally accused the Wolverines of breaking any rules. The Wolverines are easily 8-0 and No. 3 in the country in the first round of the College Football Playoff rankings, but no one is talking about that...and that's a shame.
Things Discussed: Rundown of the ton of false reporting. NCAA is in town: False. WSJ says offer rescinded: False. Thamel says all the B10 coaches are repeating Ryan Day's talking points: False. It's one thing to sensationalize—ESPN sensationalizes all the time—but they're getting provable facts wrong. Getting it right means calling someone who could tell you your reporting is wrong. Craig Ross: Shares the time Sam had it from someone that Carr was against the Harbaugh hire and he checked on it with Carr who said he loves Jack Harbaugh and he'd be the biggest fan of the hiring of Jim Harbaugh. How much does it matter? Run-pass is the best you can tell; it matters, not as much as how the right tackle's foot is aligned, because the RT's half step is more important than hiding your intentions from the defense. James Franklin: Nobody needed your signs to know you were running a zone read on 4th & 2 vs OSU in 2018. Nobody said we need to start a federal investigation against Northwestern when they had Michigan's signs that day. Schiano's the biggest sign-stealer in the league, because nobody changes their signs. Sam: they're mad about Stalions though. That wasn't Schiano's halftime comment. Want to shut them up? Everyone turn in your sign-stealers and go to wristbands and microphones. Stalions on CMU's sideline? Possible that McElwain didn't know who Stalions was. Seth: Is it possible that CMU borrowed Michigan's sign-stealer to try to beat MSU? Would explain how he got a placard, how he knew how the coaches were dressing, etc. It wouldn't implicate Michigan, because they get no benefit from that, but would fit Stalions's profile. Brian: If Michigan's moving ahead with their contract for Harbaugh their internal investigation found no evidence that Balance of news is positive; now we're just down to coaches complaining. Do you think these guys are interested parties? The check? Ryan Day doesn't care about the check; the commissioner of the league is a TV guy, and a TV guy is not going to devalue the TV conference's most valuable property because they will get sued by Fox and NBC, and guarantee that Michigan will leave this conference for the SEC. Guy who said it's a three-touchdown advantage $1 it's Franklin. And you still lose. Ryan Day you still lose too. Why aren't OSU/PSU clamoring to play Michigan without their sign-stealer? Brian: "If you actually believe what you're saying you would be, but you don't because it's crazy." Maybe you guys need to get good; we're a TV product and you guys are unwatchable. This conference is Michigan and Ohio State and the four teams we're importing because the rest of you are unwatchable.
Dan Wetzel, Ross Dellenger & SI's Pat Forde reflect on the life and career of legendary men's college basketball coach Bob Knight on today's episode. The news of Bob Knight's passing broke on Wednesday night, leaving the sports world crushed at the loss of a legendary figure. The guys also recall Knight's volatility and unique character traits that made him truly one-of-one in the purest definition of the phrase.Central Michigan's lack of definitive comment regarding this week's reporting that a figure resembling Conor Stalions was spotted on their sideline has led the crew to decide that Stalions was indeed stealing signs from Michigan State early in the year. The investigation continues for Michigan and Stalions, but the more that Dan, Pat & Ross learn about it, the more they have to conclude that no college coach would ever be on board with Stalions' brash espionage tactics. The Big Ten held a coaches phone conference with commissioner Tony Petitti this week. Jim Harbaugh provided his statement, then left the call for other coaches to express their displeasure with the conference in reference to the sign-stealing scandal. Jared joined for his weekly hit talking Titans. What's the latest on Connor Stalions amid the investigation on him? Joe Rants on Stalions & all the details surrounding it.
Things Discussed: MSU: Credit to the team. Signgate: SI article is interesting because it's the only one not part of Ohio State's orchestrated PR campaign. How much does it matter? Coaches say very little: give me run or pass. How much was Stalions working on his own? Probably all of it. Brian: Not hard to figure out where the money's coming from: Mom & Dad. He's the kind of guy who'd write a manifesto about how he's going to take over the Michigan. Problem is because the NCAA holds coaches accountable even if they didn't know. Hopefully Michigan has processes in place that show they were actively discouraging this behavior. Real scrutiny: their vetting process for low-level staffers needs to improve. Ryan Day: Only way I can get beat is if someone cheats, because I'm that brilliant. OSU-PSU: Drew Allar isn't that good and you can't put the game on him.

Evidence is mounting in the Jim Harbaugh - Michigan Wolverines football SpyGate scandal. Michigan football analyst Connor Stalions, the biggest person of interest in the middle of this NCAA investigation about whether Michigan broke scouting rules, left a paper trail longer than the tail on Haley's Comet! We reportedly have receipts from purchased tickets at 11 Big 10 schools, credit card information, and video surveillance of surrogates in the seats of the aforementioned tickets video taping sideline signs on cell phones. We even have photos of Stalions standing next to Harbaugh on the sideline during games with a laminated card. For a coach that said he knew nothing about this, nor directed anybody to break NCAA rules, this looks bad for Harbaugh. So what's next? We will think this through, out loud, on Locked on Big 10. Will Harbaugh make it to the end of the season? Will Michigan have to forfeit wins down the road? Is the NCAA out to get Harbaugh? On the brighter side, we will announce the latest weekly football award winners of the week around the Big 10. Plus, we have movement on our weekly Big 10 Power Rankings!
