On Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield looked the part of a No. 1 overall draft pick. The 25-year-old completed 12 of his first 14 passes, including a 75-yard touchdown to rookie wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones. On a day where star running backs Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt had ordinary games, Mayfield's 334 passing yards and four touchdowns led the Browns to a 41-35 win. On this week's Three and Out, Steve Doerschuk, Marla Ridenour, George Thomas and Nate Ulrich break down the biggest takeaways form the game. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A Thursday update on the Browns on The Kenny & JT Show with Steve Doerschuk from The Repository. Are we over-doing it in thinking the game with the Titans Sunday is the biggest regular season Browns game in years? And can the Browns finally beat a “great team”? Which player does Steve think needs to step up on offense? Will the Browns defense be able to tackle Derrick Henry? What is the status of Sione Takitaki? What are Steve’s thoughts on the Browns calling up former McKinley Bulldog Jamal Davis?
Late last week the Browns found out they would be without superstar defensive end Myles Garrett against the Philadelphia Eagles. No matter. Cornerback Denzel Ward played like you might expect for a former No. 4 overall pick. Defensive end Olivier Vernon collected numerous sacks. The defense did enough to keep the Browns in the game while the running game on offense eventually broke the Eagles down. The Browns are now 7-3 and in second place in the AFC North. Steve Doerschuk, Marla Ridenour, George Thomas and Nate Ulrich break down Sunday's win in Cleveland and what it means for the Browns. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Browns running back Kareem Hunt wore down the Houston Texans before Nick Chubb finished them off. That is the condensed version of the Browns' 10-7 win against the Texans at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday. Of course there was more to the game. Guard Wyatt Teller and tight end Austin Hooper joined Chubb returning to the offense from injury. Myles Garrett and the defense limited Deshaun Watson. The weather played a factor. Baker Mayfield did just enough. But it was the running backs, both of whom topped 100 yards on the ground, who led the Browns to a win. Steve Doerschuk, Marla Ridenour, George Thomas and Nate Ulrich break down the Sunday's win and what it means for the Browns. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After losing to the Baltimore Ravens 31-15 on Sunday, the Cleveland Browns have been officially eliminated from playoff contention. In a season of great expectations, it didn't have to be this way. Nate Ulrich, Marla Ridenour and Steve Doerschuk check in from FirstEnergy Stadium after the game hit three topics on what went wrong for the Browns not only in this game, but in the entire season. That starts with quarterback Baker Mayfield, who's numbers have gone down in his second pro season. There are also more questions about head coach Freddie Kitchens and his play calling, and what it could mean for his future.
The Browns beat the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday to win their fourth game out of the last five. But all the intrigue is the pre-game things involving wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. were more interesting than the game itself. Nate Ulrich, Marla Ridenour and Steve Doerschuk check in with their thoughts on the game, Beckham and what came next.
Against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium, the Cleveland Browns finally looked like the team everyone expected to see this season. Sure, the Dolphins are one of the worst teams in the NFL, but Sunday was a standout day for an offense featuring multiple stars in Baker Mayfield, Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry and Nick Chubb. After the game, a 41-24 win by the Browns, Nate Ulrich, Marla Ridenour and Steve Doerschuk got together to talk about the game, and how Cleveland picked Miami apart. They also looked ahead to Week 13 when the Browns play the Steelers, in what should be a playoff atmosphere in Pittsburgh.
The Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on national television Thursday night 21-7 at FirstEnergy Stadium. It was the team's first win over their rivals since 2014. But no one is talking about it. Instead, the talk is about the violent brawl at the end of the game that saw Browns defensive end Myles Garrett hit Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph in the head with a helmet. Nate Ulrich, Marla Ridenour and Steve Doerschuk spoke about the incident that will be talked about for decades immediately after the game.
Steve Doerschuk, Marla Ridenour and Nate Ulrich check in after the Browns' 19-16 win over the Buffalo Bills at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday. In the game, the Browns got Kareem Hunt for the first time and finally won a game they normally lose despite some issues again in the red zone.
The Cleveland Browns lost again on Sunday, falling 27-13 to the New England Patriots. In the game, the Browns amassed several turnovers and a load of penalties. Does that put first-year head coach Freddie Kitchens on the hot seat after just seven games? On today's Cover 2 podcast, Steve Doerschuk and Dan Kadar recap Sunday's game and what the future could hold for Kitchens. It's an interesting talking point, especially when you consider the other potential coaching options available for the Browns. The Browns on Sunday also changed their left tackle from Greg Robinson to Justin McCray and rotated at right guard between Eric Kush and Wyatt Teller. Steve has some thoughts on how that went. Finally, they cover what the Browns could do at the NFL trade deadline. Notably, the Browns have been linked with Washington left tackle Trent Williams. The cost could at least be a first-round pick. Steve specifies a Browns player would could be included in a trade.

Kenny goes behind the scenes during the Browns loss to Seattle with the Browns beat writer. Steve deciphers Freddie Kitchen's postgame words. What did he see that shocked him after Baker's final interception? Is health a reason for Baker's accuracy issues?
It was a game the Cleveland Browns should have won against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at First Energy Stadium. Instead, Cleveland drops to 2-4 on the season following a game in which Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield had three more interceptions. Steve Doerschuk, Marla Ridenour and Nate Ulrich are here to recap the game in the latest Three and Out podcast from the stadium.
The Cleveland Browns had their most impressive win of the season on Sunday, beating division rival Baltimore 40-25. Canton Repository Browns beat writer Steve Doerschuk and Dan Kadar from Ohio.com recap the game, and what went right for the Browns. Namely, the offense ran through second-year running back Nick Chubb, who had 165 rushing yards on 20 attempts. Is the Browns' best offense one that is running with Chubb first and passing from Baker Mayfield second? Next they discuss the team's defense, particularly over the last two games. The Browns have more than been getting by with Terrance Mitchell and T.J. Carrie at cornerback while Denzel Ward and Greedy Williams have been injured. And linebacker Joe Schobert is proving why he's worthy of being re-signed by the Browns. Last, we're at the quarter point of the season with the Browns sitting 2-2 on the year. Is this what we expected for the Browns at this point? Steve and Dan also have some interesting picks on MVP. One is a defensive player who is not Myles Garrett and the other is an offensive lineman.
The Cleveland Browns got their first win of the season, topping the New York Jets 23-3 on "Monday Night Football." On this Cover 2 podcast, Steve Doerschuk and Dan Kadar recap the game going through three topics: Thoughts on the offense, the play of Myles Garrett and something the team needs to work on going forward. Specifically, these topics are touched on: - How the offense and Baker Mayfield looked disjointed at times on Monday night. - What Mayfield's issues can be attributed to. - Speculating on what Mayfield's issue may be and whether or not the Browns are risking things by keeping him in games that are clearly decided. - Garrett's "controlled violence" play this season, and how he's expressing the type of talent you'd expect from a No. 1 overall pick. - How Garrett is dominating despite playing less snaps than last season. - Going into a tough stretch of five games, where every team is currently 2-0, what the Browns need to work on.
Steve takes Kenny & JT backstage at the Browns loss yesterday. Why was Steve not that shocked at the outcome? How terrible was Coach Kitchens' debut? Why "Baker didn't look like Baker"? Should Freddie be calling the plays? Steve updates us on Baker's wrist and more...
The Browns had a disastrous start to the season in a 43-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday. What was to blame? The offensive line had to be restructured on the fly after left tackle Greg Robinson was ejected. The team racked up numerous penalties on offense and defense. Nate Ulrich, Marla Ridenour and Steve Doerschuk from GateHouse Media Ohio look back on the game in this week's 3 and Out.
The preseason has concluded for the Cleveland Browns, and all that's left is for the roster to be cut down to 53 players on Saturday. Following Cleveland's 20-16 win over Detroit on Thursday night, Steve Doerschuk, Marla Ridenour and Nate Ulrich talk about the Browns players who helped and hurt themselves in preseason. One player who helped himself might not even make the Browns, while a veteran on offense could be on his way out in Cleveland.
Kenny & JT review the Browns/Bucs pre-season game and just how bad was the offense? Will that first unit respond in two weeks at the opener? Why should we be so concerned about the O-line? Was the D-line as good as we'll see? And Steve tells us who he's hearing won the kicker job?
The Cleveland Browns opened preseason play beating the Washington Redskins 30-10 at FirstEnergy Stadium. Although they didn't play much, team stars Myles Garrett and Baker Mayfield stood out. On today's edition of Cover 2: A podcast on the Cleveland Browns, Steve Doerschuk of the Canton Repository and I go over Saturday's Browns/Broncos game and more. Here's what we cover today: - How the Browns managed to overcome what was arguably quarterback Baker Mayfield's worst half of the season. - How the Browns stopped the potent Denver running attack. - The ascending play of safety Jabrill Peppers. - Interim head coach Gregg Williams' daring play calling at the end of the game, and why it made us think of Marty Schottenheimer. - Whether or not Freddie Kitchens should get a look as head coach of the Browns. - What quarterback you might take instead of Mayfield.

Steve Doerschuk, Browns beat writer for The Canton Repository, joins Rep sports editor Chris Beaven a day after the Browns beat the Panthers 26-20. They talk about the team's 3-1 hot streak, the future of interim head coach Gregg Williams, Baker Mayfield's progress, the team's playoff outlook and they take a quick look ahead to Saturday night's game at Denver.

Call it a slap in the face by reality. Or a game where a good defensive coordinator took advantage of a rookie quarterback. Or a good team simply beating a not-as-good team. On Sunday, what it was for the Cleveland Browns was a 29-13 loss to the Houston Texans featuring a bad first half from rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield. On today's Cover 2: A podcast on the Cleveland Browns, Steve Doerschuk explains why the Texans gave Mayfield so many problems on Sunday. Has the book on how to defend Mayfield and the Browns been set? We also covered these topics this week: - The struggles of the defense, especially after Denzel Ward went down with an injury. - Questioning the playcalling on defense, and what it could mean for the future of Gregg Williams. - Any hints that Bruce Arians dropped during the broadcast about his possible future as the coach of the Browns. - Wondering about the health of Baker Mayfield.
Cleveland Browns beat writer at The Repository.
The Cleveland Browns are coming off arguably their most impressive win of the season on Sunday, knocking off the Cincinnati Bengals 35-20. On today's edition of Cover 2: A podcast on the Cleveland Browns, Steve Doerschuk of the Canton Repository breaks down how Baker Mayfield and Co. got the win. We also spend some time chatting about Bruce Arians and his overt interest in becoming the next head coach of the Browns.
Gregg Williams made his debut as interim head coach of the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. Against a high-powered Chiefs team, the Browns fell in Williams' first game as head coach 37-21. On today's Cover 2: A podcast on the Cleveland Browns, Steve Doerschuk gives his opinion on Williams' performance. The fiery Williams was surprisingly stoic throughout the game, but he was bold on it. The Browns went for it on several fourth-down attempts and tried to convert a two-point conversion after each touchdown. Is this the new normal for the Browns? Steve offers his insight on how Cleveland could be coached going forward. Steve also as a must-hear story about Bruce Arians, the former Arizona Cardinals head coach. Could he be a candidate for the Browns' job? If he's not, Arians has an idea who could coach in Cleveland. Also on the show, we chat about the play of Greg Robinson at left tackle, who was in place of Desmond Harrison. We also talk about Duke Johnson, who had nine catches in the game.
Looking back at the Browns/Chiefs game, and a look ahead as well.
The Cleveland Browns lost another overtime game Sunday, dropping them to 2-4-1 on the season. After the game, head coach Hue Jackson said he would take a greater roll in the offense. On today's edition of Cover 2: A podcast on the Cleveland Browns, Steve Doerschuk talks about Jackson's comments and why the third-year coach could be nearing the end of his career in Cleveland. There is a supporter of Jackson's in the front office, though, and Steve explains who it is. If Jackson is let go, the Browns have some options currently on the coaching staff.
After getting blown out by the Los Angeles Chargers 38-14 on Sunday, there are plenty of questions to ask about the Browns. A number of them get asked to Steve Doerschuk on this edition of Cover 2: A podcast on the Cleveland Browns. The most pressing question is about rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield. It's far too early in his career for doubt, but his play has been inconsistent. He's looked great at times, but Mayfield has now thrown five interceptions in his three starts. He's also only completing 52.6 percent of his passes in those games. He's not getting much help from his banged up group of wide receivers. That includes big money free agent Jarvis Landry, who may be pressing. Steve answers the tough question on if the Browns should go after a veteran receiver like Amari Cooper or even Dez Bryant. There's one receiver the Browns should absolutely avoid, and the name might surprise you. On today's podcast, we also covered Duke Johnson's limited usage, who is to blame on the defense for not stopping the run and more.
The streak is over. Unless a new streak is just starting. In dramatic fashion, the Cleveland Browns ended their winless streak of more than 600 days on Thursday night. With first overall pick Baker Mayfield subbing in for an injured Tyrod Taylor, the Browns knocked off the New York Jets on national television 21-17 at FirstEnergy Stadium. That is cause of an emergency special edition of Cover 2: A podcast on the Cleveland Browns. Today I am joined by both Nate Ulrich and Steve Doerschuk to break down the game and Mayfield's play. In a fun story from Nate, we also learn the fate of the press room Bud Light that was seemingly gone moments after the game ended. Here are some of the specific topics hit on today: - How the tone of the game changed when Mayfield came into the game in the second quarter. - How Mayfield exceeded expectations in his first regular season action after not practicing with the first team offense. - Thoughts on Carlos Hyde's big day that featured two touchdowns and a newborn son. - What stood out about the defense and its ability to close out the game. - Thoughts on Hue Jackson wanting to wait to name a starting quarterback until he watches the tape. - If there's an overreaction to just one win. - How the Browns' defense got rewarded by the offense.
On today’s Cover 2: A Browns Podcast, Steve Doerschuk and I go over the good and bad from Cleveland's loss on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Before we get there, though, we close the book on wide receiver Josh Gordon. As we recorded the podcast the Browns were still seeking a trade partner for the troubled receiver. They were also still looking for a new kicker to replace Zane Gonzalez. His two missed field goals and two missed extra points resulted the Browns losing to the Saints 21-18 on Sunday. For Steve, the game was something of a haunting sequel to a Browns/Saints game from long ago. Here's what we covered from the game: - Why the Browns offense appears to be so conservative and offensive coordinator Todd Haley's level of trust in his players. - Whether or not the Browns should rely less on running back Carlos Hyde and utilize rookie Nick Chubb more. - The positives from the game, including the play of defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, the defense creating more turnovers and Antonio Callaway's big catch. - Why Browns fans should be encouraged despite the team starting the season 0-1-1.
Is a tie such a bad thing? Maybe not when it comes to the Cleveland Browns. On today's Cover 2: A Podcast on the Cleveland Browns, Steve Doerschuk of the Canton Repository breaks down Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The two teams tied 21-21, and for the Browns the game should be looked at as a positive. The tie came despite some questionable play and decisions. The oddest decision may have been starting undrafted rookie Desmond Harrison at left tackle. Steve goes deep on the play of the offensive line, including right tackle Chris Hubbard having trouble in pass protection. Offensive line woes weren't the only thing holding back the Browns. Starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor completed only 37.5 percent of his 40 pass attempts, and Josh Gordon was only targeted three times. All was not bad for the Browns though. Defensive end Myles Garrett somehow exceeded expectations and rookie cornerback Denzel Ward had two interceptions. We go over all of that and more on this week's Cover 2 podcast on the Cleveland Browns.

On this week's podcast, Nate Ulrich and I are joined by Canton Repository Browns writer Steve Doerschuk. He's with us to help give out awards following the team's 18 training camp practices. That includes offensive and defensive MVP, most improved holdover on the team from last season, the biggest disappointment of camp and the most pleasant surprise. Former first overall pick Myles Garrett is the choice in more than one category for Steve and Nate. Because it's the Browns, though, we spent the most time covering the biggest disappoints from camp. Before the camp awards are handed out, we go over the third episode of Hard Knocks. The episode was a little light on news items, but eccentric offensive line coach Bob Wylie stole the show. We close out this week looking ahead to Thursday night's game in Cleveland against the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. There are a few things to keep an eye on as the starters are expected to play the entire first half.
Every year, some NFL team surprises everyone. Every year, that team is not the Browns. Could that change this year after last year's 0-16 season? Canton Repository Browns beat writer Steve Doerschuk talks with sports editor Chris Beaven about why the Browns could be that team in 2018 and who are the players who would have to step forward and lead the way.
