No Excuse For Bills Defense To Not Be Great

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to discuss several topics, including how with all the resources allocated to the Buffalo Bills defense through free agency and now the draft, it better be a unit that looks dramatically better in 2025.Since the 2024 season ended with an AFC title game loss at Arrowhead against Kansas City, the Bills notable offensive changes have consisted of signing Josh Palmer and Laviska Shenault while letting Mack Hollins and Amari Cooper walk. They failed to add a wide receiver until the seventh round of this latest NFL draft and did grab a primarily blocking tight end late in the fifth.  Meanwhile they signed Joey Bosa, Larry Ogunjobi, Michael Hoecht, Darrick Forrest, Tre White and and Dane Jackson in free agency. They then proceeded to use their first five picks and six of the first seven on defense in the draft. It's essentially an entire defensive makeover from last year. That's fine, but as the guys discuss it better lead to consistently positive changes because if it doesn't, especially come January it should be a direct indictment against Brandon Beane, Sean McDermott, Bobby Babich and other defensive coaches. They also spend some time talking Joe's trip to Western New York over the past week, including meeting up with Patrick at Resurgence Brewing last Thursday for a Bills draft party and live podcast afterwards. That plus another Mt. Flushmore, fan comments and much more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. We consider them THE most underrated spot for wings, pizza and other great food in Western New York plus it's a great place to drink and have a great time.♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's SubstackTwitter: @PatrickMoranTBBlue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.socialInstagram: @PatrickMoranTBFacebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast

The Buffalo Bills have made minimal moves through this offseason in addressing the defensive tackle position. Brandon Beane signed Larry Ogunjobi, however, Ogunjobi will be facing a 6 game suspension to start the season. DaQuan Jones, Ed Oliver, and second year player DeWayne Carter are currently expected to be meaningful contributors to the Bills interior defensive line in 2025. Fans, analysts, and media pundits are largely in agreement that the Bills must address defensive tackle early in the NFL Draft. D-Line Prospects Bills Fans Should Get Familiar With

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran discusses several of the top and second tier defensive lineman prospects that Buffalo Bills fans should definitely start familiarizing themselves with before the NFL Draft a handful of weeks from now. There's several reasons the Bills will be picking defensive line early and perhaps often in this draft. Between the looming six game suspensions of new free agent signees Michael Hoehct and Larry Ogunjobi, the expected ease with snaps early on with Joey Bosa and the fact several prominent lineman are in the final year of their deals (Bosa, Ogunjobi, Daquan Jones, AJ Epenesa) there's both immediate and long term needs there.Patrick goes over a lot of the top prospects at both edge and defensive tackle. James Pearce Jr. feels like a guy he thinks fans should keep an eye on at edge and wonders if Brandon Beane has the guts to take a chance with Mike Green while he'd be tickled pink to see Buffalo take Derrick Harmon or Kenneth Grant at defensive tackle with their first pick.He also shares his thoughts on Christian Benford's new contract, the incredible in-house offseason has put together and comments from the Bills GM that makes it sound like James Cook get a contract extension anytime soon is extremely far fetched. That plus show mixups and plenty more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. How Much Can Bills Still Add To D-Line, Plus Some Sabres Optimism?

Moran-Alytics Podcast

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Chris Ostrander (Two in the Box) to discuss how much more the Buffalo Bills can still add to their defensive line given their unique situation as well as some actual reasons for optimism for the Buffalo Sabres.Brandon Beane and his Bills find themselves in a bit of a bind. New additions Michael Hoehct and Larry Ogunjobi are both suspended for the first six games but when they return for Week seven, if the unit stays healthy they could find themselves as part of at least nine defensive lineman already on the active roster. Of course, that's before next month's NFL draft, where Beane's almost certain to add more talent via rookie picks. The guys discuss how much may end up being too much and if there's going to be two rookies as high picks on the roster, who can end up being the odd man out, again muddled up by the suspension of two guys who'll miss a third of the season.Sticking with the Bills the guys also discuss how they're feeling about a month out from the draft in terms of what Beane may (or may not) have up his sleeve. Do Patrick or Chris sense a big Beane move coming? They also spend a few talking about the offense including who's more important to their 2025 success— Dalton Kincaid or Keon Coleman.Turning over to the Sabres, they continue to be bottom feeders in the NHL but for today at least, the guys are discussing some of the reasons for optimism beyond Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin. Chris talks about what he's seen and liked from players such as JJ Peterka, Ryan McLeod, Jason Zucker and Alex Tuch. That and plenty more!Be sure to follow Chris on X at @2ITB_Buffalo and check out the Two in the Box blog in addition to the Instigator Podcast.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On their weekly podcast, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey react to the Steelers' offseason moves so far. How do moves for names like DK Metcalf, Kenneth Gainwell, Darius Slay and -- potentially -- Aaron Rodgers compare to GM Omar Khan's action in his first two seasons? Does this group compare well with the 2023 NFL free agency class that included Elandon Roberts, Larry Ogunjobi and Isaac Seumalo? Or the 2024 group that included Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Patrick Queen and DeShon Elliott? Will a lack of NFL draft picks naturally lead to a less bountiful offseason? And how should the stockpiling of compensatory picks for 2026 factor into this conversations? Later, the guys get into some college talk with Pitt, Penn State and West Virginia all stating spring practice. Are eyes on Drew Allar in Happy Valley as he looks to shake off a College Football Playoff loss to Notre Dame? Can he get the most out of a loaded roster that includes returnees such as Nick Singleton, Kaytron Allen and more? And are receiver transfers Devonte Ross and Kyron Hudson enough to help the passing game as it loses Tyler Warren to the NFL? In Morgantown, what kind of difference can the return of coach Rich Rodriguez make? And can Eli Holstein, Desmond Reid and the Panthers emerge from mediocrity? Our duo tackles those questions. Then in the third segment, airing on the PG Pirates YouTube channel, Adam and Jason get into predictions for the Pirates and the MLB season. How many wins will manager Derek Shelton's club rack up? Can Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller and the pitching staff push them over the .500 mark? Or will the lineup led by Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds and Ke'Bryan Hayes continue to struggle like it has in years past? What should we make of Carmen Mlodzinski earning a rotation spot? How will the catching situation play out with Endy Rodriguez making the Opening Day roster and Henry Davis starting in Class AAA? And why haven't we hear from owner Bob Nutting this spring?

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran dives into what the Buffalo Bills have done at cornerback so far this offseason and perhaps more importantly, what they will do at cornerback before the 2025 regular season begins.Brandon Beane has been busy adding to the defense so far during this free agency period, but those biggest additions have come on the defensive line where they've signed Joey Bosa, Michael Hoehct and Larry Ogunjobi. The safety position has also seen Damar Hamlin re-sign as well as the addition of Darrick Forrest. The cornerback position is starting to stick out as a need at this point, perhaps the team's biggest. The Bills did bring back Dane Jackson after letting him walk a year ago, but Rasul Douglas remains in free agent limbo and former first-round pick/bust Kaiir Elam was traded to Dallas. Whether Jackson ends up starting alongside Christian Benford, cornerback is in need of talent influx. Patrick talks about Benford, his thoughts on Jackson returning and three veteran free agent possibilities that could still happen, including Douglas.More than likely however, the Bills long term and perhaps immediate starting solution come come through the draft at the end of April. Patrick breaks down three prospects that could be very enticing to the Bills in the first round as well as three others who could be solid day two picks and contribute right away. That plus some NFL rule change proposals and more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. Props to anyone who had the Bills signing a Bosa in free agency and multiple defenders who will be suspended to start the season on their bingo cards, but here we are. Matt has plenty of thoughts on the Bills “swinging big” with Joey Bosa while Brandon Beane, rightfully so caught heat for inking Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi to deals despite pending suspensions, the former a situation Beane knew about. That's just a part of an eventful offseason. The Bills also extended three key young core players in addition to the big Josh Allen contract. That's discussed and evaluated as are a few re-signings including Ty Johnson and Damar Hamlin as well as a few more low key adds like Laviska Shenault, Dane Jackson and Darrick Forrest. The guys also evaluate and discuss how the rest of the AFC east has done during this period in addition to the Bengals ponying up for both their star receivers, the Chiefs having a very interesting offseason and plenty more.♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Substack: Patrick Moran's SubstackTwitter: @PatrickMoranTBBlue Sky: @PatrickMoranTB.bsky.socialInstagram: @PatrickMoranTBFacebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast

That's led to many fans turning on him of sorts, and often suggesting the Bills should trade him since they're almost certainly not going to pay him the kind of money he's looking for. Patrick absolutely disagrees with pretty much any trade theory short of a team being stupid enough to overpay to the extent Brandon Beane can't refuse. While agreeing that Cook's snap percentage and a shortcoming or two of his leads to him not being deserving of the same type of money guys like Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry can command, he explains multiple reasons why he considers trading Cook completely foolish, even if this is his last year on the team. Also Patrick has thoughts on a listener calling the Bills signing of Joey Bosa the Baltimore equivalent of adding DeAndre Hopkins and worries that the Bosa move has Shawn Merriman vibes from more than a decade ago. That plus Keon Coleman being counted on to step up, Damar Hamlin returning to the Bills, Shaun Dolac showing on during his UB Pro Day and plenty more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium. On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Joe From Queens to discuss and react to all of the Buffalo Bills additions so far in free agency as well as the suspensions to Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi. It's been hard to put a finger on exactly how free agency has been for the Bills to this point. Weird is the term Patrick comes up with. Brandon Beane clearly had a few things in mind with his approach, most notably a receiver with a specific skill set and essentially an overhaul on the defensive line. It was shocking news to learn on Friday both Hoecht and Ogunjobi would be suspended six games each for PED violations, especially shocking to hear Beane admit he didn't know about Ogunjobi but did ahead of time with Hoecht. The guys have plenty of reactions to that news and the way a lot of fans are handling it.Also, the Bills may be relying on rookies more than they like in 2025 early on after the suspensions. Day Three Bills Free Agent Reactions - Roster Taking Shape

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Matt Warren of SB Nation to discuss the first three days of free agency for the Buffalo Bills and specifically what's become an overhaul of their defensive line following three significant additions. It wasn't exactly a secret that the Bills were going to look to improve a defensive line that was good at times in 2024 but also floundered too often as well, none more than last year's AFC championship game loss in Kansas City. Bills general manager Brandon Beane took some pretty big steps to try and improve the unit this week, signing Michael Hoecht on Monday before the big one, Joey Bosa on Tuesday and following it up with a third addition on Wednesday morning, Larry Ogunjobi. The guys break down all three moves and discuss what they like and don't like about them, and there's plenty of both on Bosa and Ogunjobi.Beane also addressed safety on Wednesday, bringing back Damar Hamlin on a one-year deal and also signing Darrick Forrest. Patrick thinks Hamlin being back is a reflection of an open market that rejected him, something Matt definitely disagrees with. With these moves plus the signing of Josh Palmer and re-signing of Ty Johnson earlier, it certainly appears the meat and potatoes of the Bills roster is set heading into NFL draft season next. That's with the exception of cornerback. Both guys have thoughts on where this roster stands as well as some reaction to happenings around the NFL and plenty more.Major props to Talking Buffalo sponsor, Sonny Red's at 1841 Abbott Road in Lackawanna, just minutes from Highmark Stadium.

Now there is speculation that the Steelers and Aaron Rodgers have a gap in their contract talks, which could be holding things up. Mike Florio guessed that the contract could be 2 years, $90M for Rodgers, but isn't sure if the Steelers are going to bend over for that. If the Steelers can get Russell Wilson for a much cheaper price, is he a better option? Does Rodgers think he is still an MVP caliber player? Cooper Kupp officially released. Should the Steelers have any interest after the DK Metcalf move? The Bills signed Larry Ogunjobi over $8M. Aaron Rodgers will officially be released by the Jets today at 4 pm. Mike Florio from Pro Football Talk joined the show. Are the Steelers and Aaron Rodgers at an impasse? Mike thinks the team could be preparing for that and use Russell Wilson as a fallback plan. Mike still thinks the Steelers are the best fit for Rodgers, but could also see the team telling Rodgers to get lost if he takes too long on his decision. Mike said the Steelers have never done anything like they did with the DK Metcalf deal, which means they need to have someone getting him the football. Mike isn't sure the Steelers realize what having Metcalf means and he's worried they are dragging their feet too much. Mike said the Vikings are not a team to rule out in all of this. Mike wondered if Rodgers is overplaying his hand right now. Mike thinks the Steelers had the expectation of retaining Justin Fields and when he walked, they panicked. How much do Rodgers and Mike Tomlin actually like each other? Mike doesn't think 2 years/$90M is the price because the deal would have been done already if it was.

On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Christopher Carter welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Christopher Carter to preview the NFL combine this week in Indianapolis from a Steelers perspective. Is defensive line the most important position group for coach Mike Tomlin to watch? Why are names including Walter Nolen, Kenneth Grant, Shemar Stewart, Derrick Harmon, Alfred Collins, Tyleik Williams, Shemar Turner and Deone Walker at the top of Ray's list as best first for the Steelers? And how would they mix into the team's group that already includes names like Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton and Larry Ogunjobi? Later, Ray and Chris ponder their biggest questions for Khan when he speaks this week. Will he give any insight on the QB situation and the decision on names including Justin Fields, Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers and others? Will Najee Harris return? Or will Khan try to take a younger player in the NFL draft? And how will they add to the receivers room around George Pickens, Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson? Then in the third segment, our duo breaks down the strengths and weaknesses of this draft class overall.

On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Christopher Carter welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to grade GM Omar Khan on his first two seasons of NFL draft picks and free agency signings. How much credit does he deserve for adding contributors including Joey Porter Jr., Zach Frazier, Keeanu Benton, Payton Wilson and Nick Herbig. Can first-round picks Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu still emerge as difference makers? And do the draft classes rely on them to be considered successes? On the free agency and trade front, how should we view moves for names including Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Patrick Queen, Donte Jackson, Larry Ogunjobi, Patrick Peterson, Elandon Roberts, Isaac Seumalo, DeShon Elliott, Van Jefferson and others? Did Khan hit on enough of those guys? Or did the additions end up leaving too much to be desired? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders how much help the offensive line may still need despite heavy investment in it the past couple of offseasons.

On the Monday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Christopher Carter welcomes Post-Gazette Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo to ponder GM Omar Khan's next moves to trim players from his roster to free up salary cap space ahead of NFL free agency next month. Who will join Preston Smith as a cap casualty as the pass rusher was cut late last week? Is Larry Ogunjobi making too much relative to his hefty salary? Did Cordarrelle Patterson do enough on special teams and in the offensive backfield to justify bringing him back? Especially with Najee Harris set to hit free agency? And how will the team handle the case of the injured Cole Holcomb? Could he be cut but brought back at a lower salary? Our duo tackles those questions and more on the defensive side. How can Khan and coach Mike Tomlin bolster defensive line depth beyond Keeanu Benton and Cam Heyward? Should they consider a pending free agent like Milton Williams, who was drafted by assistant GM Andy Weidl with the Super Bowl champion Eagles a few years back? Should they look to the draft with names like Michigan's Kenneth Grant? And how will new ILBs coach Scott McCurley be able to help key pieces of DC Teryl Austin's unit, including Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson?
