Building an all-time Giants coaching staff means stacking Parcells, Lombardi, Belichick, Landry, Coughlin, Spagnuolo, Steve Owen, Sean Payton, Mike Pope, and more — but the cost is brutal: real Giants legends get pushed into smaller roles or left out completely.Follow on Spotify and leave a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts if you enjoy no-BS Giants debate. The Big Question: Who belongs on the greatest New York Giants coaching staff ever? The answer depends on whether you value Giants-only impact, total NFL résumé, championships, innovation, or clean role fit.Drew and Rob start with Bill Parcells as head coach, but Steve Owen's Giants résumé keeps the conversation from being automatic. Parcells has the modern Super Bowl weight and the franchise-shaping presence, while Owen brings the longest Giants head-coaching résumé and pre-Super Bowl championship history. Jim Lee Howell also gets major credit as the CEO-style coach who had Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry on the same staff.Does total football immortality matter more than the exact Giants job a coach held? That question drives the offensive staff. Lombardi is the obvious offensive coordinator, Allie Sherman gets tied into the Giants coaching tree, Sean Payton lands at quarterback coach, Mike Pope is the tight ends lock, and Steve Owen's playing background gives him a place with the offensive line. The uncomfortable debate comes with names like Ray Handley and Tom Coughlin: one was a rough head coach but valuable assistant, while the other is too important to Giants history to leave out.The defensive side becomes even more stacked. Bill Belichick gets the defensive coordinator role, Tom Landry still has to be honored for his Giants impact and defensive innovation, and Steve Spagnuolo lands as defensive line/pass-rush coordinator because the staff is that overloaded. Romeo Crennel, Marty Schottenheimer, John Fox, Earl “Potty” Potteiger, Mike Nolan, and John Harbaugh all create different arguments about résumé, role fit, and how much Giants connection should matter.Who got punished by how loaded this list is?The episode closes on the real problem with building an all-time Giants staff: there are more qualified names than available jobs. Some fans will value Parcells and Belichick. Others will argue harder for Landry, Owen, Flaherty, Fassel, Reeves, or another old-school Giants figure. That is what makes this debate work — there is no painless version of the final staff.Merch: https://2giantgoofballs-shop.fourthwall.com/ Support: https://buymeacoffee.com/2giantgoofballs All episodes: https://2giantgoofballs.buzzsprout.com/Send us Fan MailSupport the show

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by Batavia Daily News sports editor Alex Brasky to go over several critical points one more time before the Buffalo Bills take on the Baltimore Ravens in elimination playoff football Sunday, including examining how much of a legacy game this is for Bills head coach Sean McDermott. Alex has been at One Bills Drive all week as the Bills prepare for Baltimore on Sunday and Patrick asks him to describe what the vibe's been like there, as Buffalo is in the unusual spot of being a home underdog despite not having a loss all season in Orchard Park. How much does that Week four game when Baltimore pounded Buffalo play a part on the betting line so many months later? It's certainly for health and injury reasons. The guys talk about how much heathier Buffalo is coming into this game compared to earlier this season against Baltimore and last year at this time in their three point AFC divisional playoff heartbreaking loss to Kansas City. Also, Alex has thoughts on how much of a legacy game this is for McDermott. The Bills head coach has a 6-6 playoff record but has often got stuck at this point of the postseason. He's often compared by Bills fans to Marty Schottenheimer, an unfair comparison and it's discussed how best-case we may be seeing with Sean what happened with Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy years ago. Regardless, the guys talk about how important a win would be to his legacy and how much another loss in this round may tarnish it. That plus the significance of Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones playing great for Buffalo on Sunday, who much the weather and home field should matter, a couple of Bills X-factors and plenty more. You can follow Alex on Twitter @AlexBrasky and check out his work at the Batavia Daily News. Send us a textIn this jam-packed live episode of "2 Giants Goofballs: New York Giants News & Updates," hosts Drew and Rob break down all the latest news surrounding the NY Giants as they gear up for their NFC East showdown against the Washington Commanders. They dive into the New York Giants' injury report for this week, highlighting key players like offensive lineman Ezeudu, WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette, and several defensive backs including Adoree' Jackson and Cor'Dale Flott. The Giants are dealing with a host of injuries across critical positions, affecting their lineup as they prepare to face a Commanders team battling their own injury setbacks, including players like linebacker Frankie Luvu and tackle Cornelius Lucas. Drew and Rob dissect how these injuries could impact the Giants' performance, and whether the Giants can overcome these challenges to bring home a much-needed NFC East win.Next, the hosts focus on a hot topic involving Giants offensive tackle Eluemunor, who made waves with his recent comments on holding his ground against T.J. Watt. Eluemunor had boldly claimed he wanted to face Watt one-on-one, and post-game, he stood by his stance, asserting that Watt was limited to just a single impact play in the matchup. Drew and Rob analyze the stats behind the story, noting Watt's six pressures, two sacks, and forced fumble, which sparked plenty of debate on just how effective Eluemunor's efforts were. As they discuss the comments from both Eluemunor and Watt, the hosts examine what this means for Eluemunor's role on the Giants' offensive line moving forward. The show then takes a look at the latest news on former Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, who's moved one step closer to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. With Coughlin named as one of nine semifinalists by the Hall's Coach Blue-Ribbon Committee, Drew and Rob discuss his storied legacy with the Giants, where he led the team to two Super Bowl victories. The duo recounts key moments from Coughlin's tenure, reflecting on his impact not only in New York but across the NFL. As the conversation unfolds, they talk about Coughlin's competition for the Hall, including other former Giants coaches like Dan Reeves and Marty Schottenheimer, pondering Coughlin's chances of making the final cut.As they prepare for Week 9, Drew and Rob shift focus to their game picks for the upcoming matchups across the NFL, analyzing the latest odds and making predictions for each game. With the Cowboys facing the Falcons, the Ravens up against the Broncos, and the Dolphins squaring off against the Bills, the hosts give their insights on where the biggest upsets and surprise wins might unfold. Their predictions include everything from the Giants vs. Commanders matchup, where the Giants are slight underdogs at home, to high-stakes games like the Lions at Packers and Rams at Seahawks. Throughout the live show, Drew and Rob keep Giants fans updated with all the critical NY Giants news and analysis they need. [A summer vacation re-release of a fan favorite episode from January 2020!] It's a return to the gridiron, and a revealing behind-the-scenes look at the brash, but ultimately ill-fated United Football League of 2009-12 – with its only commissioner, Michael Huyghue (Behind the Line of Scrimmage: Inside the Front Office of the NFL). Formed in 2007 out of big-budget dreams to establish a national top-tier, Fall-season minor league pro football circuit by high-wattage investors like San Francisco investment banker Bill Hambrecht, Google executive Tim Armstrong and Dallas Mavericks owner/firebrand Mark Cuban (who later backed out, along with initially-rumored financier T. Boone Pickens) – the UFL was also conveniently timed to capitalize on fallout from any potential labor/owner strife prior to the 2011-12 NFL season, when the league's collective bargaining agreement with its players expired.  The bet backfired when a correctly-anticipated owner lockout of players quickly ended in July of 2011, ensuring no regular season disruption or drama. Over the course of its history, five teams played in the league: the Las Vegas Locomotives, Hartford Colonials (originally the New York Sentinels), Omaha Nighthawks, Sacramento Mountain Lions (née California Redwoods), and Virginia Destroyers (successors to the Florida Tuskers).  The Locomotives were historically the best of the franchises, winning two of the UFL's three championship games, and possessing an undefeated regular season record when the league suspended operations (ultimately for good) in mid-Fall 2012.  Big-name NFL coaches like Jim Haslett, Jay Gruden, Dennis Green, Marty Schottenheimer, and Jim Fassel were featured attractions, as were recognizable pro talent like Simeon Rice, Josh McCown, Daunte Culpepper, and Jeff Garcia – to name just a few. Huyghue walks host Tim Hanlon through the numerous ups, frequent downs and multiple sideways' of the UFL's brief lifespan, including: how early-career front office experiences in the NFL (Lions, Jaguars), WLAF (Birmingham Fire), and NFL Players' Association uniquely prepared him to the UFL commissioner's role; league ownership's original intention to play as a Spring league; the allure of then-untapped pro markets like Omaha, Las Vegas Sacramento; and lessons learned that could have helped last year's AAF and this year's soon-to-launch XFL. + + + Support the show with Dollar Shave Club's “Ultimate Shave Starter Set” for just $5! + + + BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: "Behind the Line of Scrimmage: Inside the Front Office of the NFL" (2018)   FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

Footballguys staff writer Adam Harstad joins RSP Film and Data as Matt Waldman's cohost for the 2022 football season to discuss practices that will make you a better fantasy GM and NFL fan.   There are a lot of excellent writers and analysts in the fantasy industry. There are few that I hold in as high a regard as Adam. He's a forthright human being with a tremendous intellect whose approach to analysis in this space differs from most. He's also an excellent fantasy GM in re-draft and dynasty formats. Unlike Dwain McFarland, whose work delves into the statistical process, Adam spends a lot of time examining results and dealing with broad themes of decision-making that help us become better fantasy players and fantasy analysts. This week's topics: The Marty Schottenheimer Rant: Why he should be a Hall of Famer. A decent guideline for determining worthwhile football stats. The nerds' slow evolution toward valuing indirect data. The irony of task-oriented thinkers in analytics judging strategic thinking. Areas where Schottenheimer was a task-oriented and strategic thinker. Dented Cans in Dynasty formats: How to identify these players. Why value is often gained even before they see the field in an attempt to rebound from their value trough? Recent examples of dented cans that regained or added value. Current dented cans to leverage. Of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2022 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95.  Matt's new RSP Dynasty Rankings and Two-Year Projections Package is available for $24.95 If you're a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2020 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge.   If you're a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2020 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that's included at no additional charge.   Best yet, proceeds from sales are set aside for a year-end donation to Darkness to Light to combat the sexual abuse of children.

Today's guest on the Mushroom Society Series on the Coach and Coordinator Podcast is with retired NFL Coach Al Saunders. Coach Saunders began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at USC under John McKay from 1970–71 and served as receivers coach for the University of Missouri's Fiesta Bowl team in 1972. Saunders spent 1973 through 1975 as a play-caller and offensive backfield coach at Utah State. He then spent six seasons as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at the University of California. He guided the Golden Bears to set 32 NCAA, conference, and school records and finished each season ranked in the top ten in the nation in passing. His final collegiate stop was in 1982 as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach under Johnny Majors at the University of Tennessee where he built an explosive, record-setting offense. His first NFL head coaching position came with the San Diego Chargers as interim head coach in 1986 following the resignation of Don Coryell. He spent two full seasons as the Chargers' head coach after previously working as receivers coach in 1983-84 and assistant head coach in 1985-86 for what was one of the most prolific offenses in the history of modern football. In 1985, San Diego's "Air Coryell" led the NFL in passing and total offense for an unprecedented fifth time in six years. From 1989 until 1998, Saunders was with the Kansas City Chiefs. Saunders worked for 10 winning seasons under the highly respected head coach Marty Schottenheimer again as a part of a top-performing offense. Saunders joined the St. Louis Rams coaching staff under the legendary Dick Vermeil. Serving as associate head coach and receivers coach with the Rams (1999-2000), he helped create one of the most dynamic and explosive offenses that the NFL had ever seen, and eventually helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl XXXIV victory. Leading the NFL in virtually every significant offensive category, "The Greatest Show on Turf" established numerous NFL records for scoring and offensive production. When Vermeil came out of retirement in 2001, Saunders reunited with his old mentor and former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, as the assistant head coach/offensive coordinator until Vermeil's final retirement in 2006. Under Saunders' direction as coordinator, the Chiefs offense was the most productive unit in the entire NFL during that 5-year span. 46 franchise records for offense production were established and no team scored more points (2,175), gained more yards (30,470), or scored more touchdowns (262) during that time. Coach Saunders was ranked as the #1 Offensive Coordinator in the past 25 years in the NFL by ESPN and in 2005, and was named USA Today's Offensive Coach of the Year. Coach Saunders finished out his career as an assistant with Redskins, Rams, Ravens, Raiders, Dolphins, and retired after his stint with the Cleveland Browns Shownotes: -Start with John McKay -Being organized -Don't tell - Teach -Treat everyone as a number one draft choice -The job of a coach is to make all players the best they can be -You can't teach experience -Create an environment people enjoy being in -Take the positive environment and enthusiasm to the field -How the best approach the game -Dealing with your coaches -Developing a top offense -Don't ask players to do what they can't do -Protecting the QB Link to all Mushroom Society Episodes and COOL Clinic Speakers: https://soundcloud.com/user-804678956/sets/the-c-o-o-l-clinic-speakers Learn from COOL Clinic Coaches: https://coachtube.com/coolclinic
