Robert McKee is a world-renowned screenwriting lecturer, story consultant, and the author of the book "Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting". He has taught his storytelling principles to thousands of screenwriters, novelists, playwrights, and industry professionals around the world. McKee is considered a master storyteller, and his seminars are highly respected for their rigor, insight, and practical advice. McKee's approach to storytelling emphasizes the importance of substance, structure, and style. He believes that great stories are grounded in universal human experiences and that they must be structured in a way that engages the audience emotionally and intellectually. His teachings have been influential in the film industry, with many of his students going on to write successful screenplays, including the writers of the films "The Social Network" and "Black Swan". Despite being best known for his work in the film industry, McKee has also written extensively about storytelling in other mediums. He has published a book on novel writing, "Storynomics", and has worked with corporate executives and leaders to help them craft compelling narratives that resonate with their audiences. His teachings on the art of storytelling have helped countless writers and creators to connect with their audiences and to bring their visions to life. In this conversation we talk about what makes a great story, is it language? Is it the story itself? We also talked about how he knew what he wanted to do in life at age 8 and how can you become a great storyteller.   Discover Robert Mckee's Books and Courses…  https://mckeestory.com/ Subscribe to Robert Mckee's Channel on YouTube…  http://youtube.com/ robertmckeestory

Learn the methodology behind brand stories, why the marketing world has been turned upside down, how the brain uses storytelling to make decisions, and the myths that get absolutely obliterated! Takeaways Human discovery has changed; search & social have altered how people learn, act, & interact with brands & their relationships with them Customers ignore & distrust marketing; what worked 5 years ago does not work anymore The future = original storytelling that creates unique & valuable experiences for customers The brain stores moments of change & whether the outcome was painful or pleasurable; decisions are made from emotionally referencing those moments Stories are unique in their ability to affect how people think & behave; be responsible with that power   Life goes out of balance & in order for marketing to be authentic, brands need to address that shit happens Links Twitter: @tomgerace LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomgerace/ Skyword: https://www.skyword.com/ Forward 2018: https://www.skyword.com/forward/ Storynomics Boston: https://www.skyword.com/forward/storynomics/ Storynomics: https://storynomics.com/

Imagine what would be possible if you could talk in a way that connects with people's emotions and mobilizes them to action.  Or craft stories that give meaning and illustrate what your team or your organization is truly about. Imagine what it would feel like to pitch your products or services at a 100% win rate... In this episode of CultureLab, we host an award-winning communication expert and speechwriter, Richard Newman who shares incredibly useful tips on how to do all of the above - and more! Communication and storytelling play a huge role in shaping cultures. In his book, “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind”, Yuval Noah Harrari makes a compelling case for storytelling and myths being the key factors for homo sapiens dominating our planet. He argues that stories and myths were the main enablers of civilisation as we know it. Without them, we would still live the life of our early ancestors, hunters and gatherers, struggling for survival in the world where homo sapiens was just a marginal creature.  Organisational myths and stories are no different. They serve as the collective memory and are one of the main tools to shape organisational culture. So, do we really know how to use this powerful tool and make the desired impact on our co-workers and our work environment?  Richard Newman and I talk about how to improve the impact of our words and our stories.    About the guest Richard Newman is an award-winning expert in communication, storytelling and influence.  He recently won the most coveted award in speech-writing, the Cicero Grand Prize Award for being the Best International Speechwriter, selected by a committee in Washington DC. His team has given coaching to 50,000 people, across 45 countries, including CEOS and leadership teams.  His clients include Expedia, EE, AXA, Capgemini, Microsoft and 3M. He is regularly featured on BBC London Radio and TV, discussing the communication styles of leaders.  Richard is a guest speaker at London Business School, where he teaches the MBA students. Last year his team helped one client win over £1.2 billion in new business by improving the way they communicate, winning 100% of the work they bid for.  You can learn more about Richard at: http://www.ukbodytalk.com/   Books mentioned on the show: Daniel Kahneman, “Thinking, Fast and Slow “ Simon Sinek, “Start with Why” Robert McKee, “Storynomics”   Quotes from this episode: “Many great ideas fail simply because they are poorly communicated” - Richard Newman Tweet this quote: https://ctt.ec/35aM4 “When leaders are thinking of changing culture, it’s got to be on the emotional side of things.
