Palantir, Clearview A.I., NSO Group, maker of the infamous Pegasus spyware, Anomaly 6 and Zignal are a few examples of private companies that offer to spy on anyone for a price. Anomaly 6, a mobile phone spyware solution set up by 2 former NSA military intelligence officers, can track roughly 3 billion devices in real time, equivalent to a fifth of the world's population. Zignal Labs, a social media monitoring firm that leverages its access to Twitter's rarely granted “firehose” data stream to sift through hundreds of millions of tweets per day without restriction. With their powers combined, A6 proposed, Zignal's corporate and governmental clients could not only surveil global social media activity, but also determine who exactly sent certain tweets, where they sent them from, who they were with, where they'd been previously, and where they went next. This enormously augmented capability would be an obvious boon to both regimes keeping tabs on their global adversaries and companies keeping tabs on their employees. These firms represent a burgeoning new private military-grade surveillance industry and it is targeted at us!Is this the beginning of surveillance on demand? What can we do to prevent this type of surveillance from happening? Join the Decentralists this week and find out why hacking tools are available to the highest bidder and how anyone can hire their own Private Spy...for a price.

Smartphone apps constantly harvest your location data. That information is shared with advertisers, typically without your knowledge or informed consent. There are no laws in the U.S. prohibiting the sale or resale of that private data. And companies like phone-tracking firm Anomaly Six exploit that. So do government agencies. This week on Intercepted, Intercept reporter Sam Biddle and Tech Inquiry's Jack Poulson discuss their reporting on Anomaly Six and the company's pitch to a social media monitoring company, Zignal Labs. Anomaly Six proposed that their joint efforts would permit the U.S. government to effortlessly spy on its adversaries. To show off its vast surveillance capabilities, Anomaly Six demo'd its software by spying on the CIA and NSA. Biddle and Poulson talk about the Wild West of personal data brokers, how the advertising industry feeds the surveillance industry, and just why the apps on your phone made it easy for Anomaly Six to build a tool it claims can spy on billions of devices. join.theintercept.com/donate/now See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. Our wide-ranging conversation touches upon helping decision-makers visualize the information environment, cloud computing, nurturing an innovation culture, and in-demand near-term future capabilities. John and Alex discuss how measuring IO effectiveness includes several sub-components such as horizonal and vertical contextual understanding of the whole information environment, establishing agnostic baselines, filtering and searching, target audience definition, and measuring based upon area targets instead of point targets. The national security and commercial marketplaces seem to be blending and asking for predictive and prescriptive analytics, narrative intelligence, sandbox information environments, geospatial, and meme analysis. Today's episode of “The Convergence” podcast features our conversation with Mr. Doowan Lee, CEO, VAST-OSINT and Board Advisor, Zignal Labs, originally published last October. Mr. Lee is a National Security expert in influence intelligence, disinformation analysis, data analytics, network visualization, and great power competition. Before joining Zignal Labs, Mr. Lee served as a professor and principal investigator at the Naval Postgraduate School, where he executed federally funded projects on collaborative information systems, network analysis, and disinformation analysis. His article entitled The United States Isn't Doomed to Lose the Information Wars explores Russian and Chinese disinformation campaigns and was featured in Foreign Policy last fall. The following bullet points highlight key insights from our interview with Mr. Lee: Our adversaries see disinformation as just an effective tool that provides strategic and global reach. We see it as irregular warfare when it is anything but irregular. Disinformation, or the historical term propaganda, has been around forever. COVID-19 has accentuated this threat vector or surface. The Chinese government outlined their national information operations policy in "The Communiqué on the Current State of the Ideological Sphere” (also known as Document #9): - Nations talking about the spread of open societies are attempting to undermine the CCP. - The CCP will maintain positive control of all media. - The CCP will professionalize information operations. This policy resulted in the development of the “Great Firewall,” the “Golden Shield" project, and the PLA's Strategic Support Forces. The CCP and the Kremlin are increasing their coordination on national security activities and, in some cases, are increasing their collaboration. This resulted in a joint statement that stated the two governments would
Social media outlets banned President Trump and several of his supporters for spreading misinformation, calling for violence, among other things. Correspondingly, research company Zignal Labs found social media mentions of election fraud dropped by 73%. The Washington Post Technology Reporter Craig Timberg breaks down the research results and discusses the future of social media going forward.
Online misinformation about election fraud plunged 73 percent after Donald Trump was banned from Twitter, Facebook and several other social media sites. Some of his allies were also either suspended or banned. Research firm Zignal Labs, a San Francisco-based analytics firm, found that conversations about election fraud dropped from 2.5 million mentions to 688,000 mentions […]
On today's Quick News Daily Podcast, we cover a lot of smaller stories that are making headlines. These include stories about Vice President-elect Kamala Harris resigning her Senate position today, when Jon Ossoff and Reverend Warnock could be sworn in as U.S. Senators from Georgia, and what effect Twitter's ban on Trump is already having. Also, we'll cover the changes to the Inauguration, like a Tom Hanks-hosted TV program, and President-elect Biden's stimulus plan (The American Rescue Plan).----more----Find where to listen to Quick News Daily: https://www.podpage.com/quick-news/latestSources Transcript:SENATEKamala Harris is resigning from the Senate today so that she can prep for her role as Vice President, which is still so, so fun to say. This means that the current California Secretary of State will fill her seat. He said that he expects to be sworn in on Wednesday.Another thing I’ve been wondering is when exactly do Jon Ossoff and Reverend Warnock get sworn in in the Senate?Well, according to WXTL in Georgia, every country in Georgia was able to meet the deadline of certifying their results by midnight this past Friday. No precincts or counties reported any changes in the outcome, so again, no fraud there.Warnock and Ossoff have to bring their certification papers to DC, and once they do that, they’re usually sworn in the next day.Even though I’m sure they could head there today with their papers, everywhere I’ve looked says that Democrats will get control of the Senate on January 20th, so I guess everyone just kind of takes a break until then. BIDEN STIMULUS PLANI think it was Friday of last week, President Biden (I’m just going to start calling him that, if you don’t mind) introduced his plan for a $1.9 trillion emergency legislative package to fund a nationwide vaccination effort and provide direct economic relief to Americans. He’s calling the plan “The American Rescue Plan”."In this pandemic in America, we cannot let people go hungry. We cannot let people get evicted. We cannot let nurses, educators and others lose their jobs when we so badly need them. We must act now and act decisively," Biden said.Woah, is that our president saying that? Is our president actually getting involved in passing bills and doing actual work? I thought he was just supposed to tweet about what he’s watching on Fox & Friends. The American Rescue Plan will include more than $400 billion toward dealing with COVID, including $160 billion to execute a national vaccination program, expand testing and mobilize a public health jobs program. The proposal includes $1,400 stimulus checks for Americans and extends and expands unemployment benefits, including a $400 weekly unemployment insurance supplement, through September. The CNN article says “Biden's plan invests $50 billion to expand Covid-19 testing, providing funds to purchase rapid tests, expand lab capacity and help schools and local governments implement regular testing protocols. Biden will also ask for $30 billion to invest in the disaster relief fund to ensure sufficient supplies and protective gear, and to provide total federal reimbursement for critical emergency response resources.”The request includes $30 billion in rental, utility, energy, and water assistance for those hit hardest by the pandemic, as well as extending eviction and foreclosure moratoriums until September 30th.In terms of small business help, Biden is proposing $15 billion in flexible grants to more than 1 million of the hardest hit small businesses. He is proposing investing $35 billion in government funds into state, local, tribal, and nonprofit small business financing programs.Biden's plan would provide additional resources for high-quality, affordable childcare. He will request a $25 billion emergency stabilization fund to assist childcare providers in covering their costs to operate safely. It would also provide emergency paid leave to an additional 106 million Americans in order to help reduce the spread of the virus. There’s also a proposal for the child tax credit to be made refundable for the year, and that Congress increase the credit to $3,000 per child, or $3,600 for a child under the age of 6 and make 17-year-olds qualifying children for the year.Biden is asking f $350 billion in emergency funding for state, local and territorial governments in order to support front line workers, keeping them on the job and paid.I don’t know, I don’t want to get too optimistic because it is Congress, after all. Plus, they always say that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.To get this deal passed, they just need to make sure they keep moderate Democrats, like Joe Manchin, happy. The lives and futures of tens or hundreds of millions of Americans really should not come down to one or two people, especially old white dudes who are probably millionaires, but that’s our system right now, unfortunately. It is a very good step in the right direction though, because it’s about helping working Americans, not just tax breaks and straight up money for companies. I honestly don’t get how blue-collar workers think that Republicans are their friends and Democrats are their enemies. And, I hate to say it, but Manchin had a good point on CNN’s State of the Union yesterday. He said, “I'm on board by helping people that need help, people that really can't make it, people that don't have a job. Sending checks to people that basically already have a check and aren't going to be able to spend that or are not going to spend it -- usually are putting it in their savings account right now -- that's not who we are."So, you might be asking “when is the earliest the money could start flowing?” The answer, according to Kevin Kosar, a resident scholar at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute and co-editor of the book Congress Overwhelmed, might be mid- to late February. Another CNN article pointed out that in his speech Thursday night, Biden said he would like to work with members of both parties to enact his American Rescue Plan, indicating that he wants to go the traditional route, which would require the backing of at least 10 Republican senators. INAUGURATIONThe arrests for the insurrection at the Capitol just keep piling up.There won’t be an actual parade from the Capitol to the White House, just a virtual parade (whatever that is). There won’t be inaugural balls either, but it might actually be better this year. Instead of these, we’ll get a special TV program that’s hosted by Tom Hanks. This will run from 8:30 PM ET to 10:00 PM ET. It’ll be on the original networks, and also on cable on CNN and MSNBC.The program will include performances from Jon Bon Jovi, who campaigned with Biden in Pennsylvania, Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake, and Ant Clemons. As for President Sore Loser, Trump plans to leave the White House on Inauguration Day and have a departure ceremony at Joint Base Andrews. This means he’d be the first president in modern history to skip the inauguration of the next president. As for the departure ceremony, I don’t know about you, but that kind of seems like a misuse of military resources. I’m not sure if we care about those things all the time, or if it’s just when Democrats try to ask why we’re spending so much money on the military. Yeah, I am pretty salty about that topic…After the departure ceremony, Trump will use our hard-earned tax dollars one last time to use Air Force One to fly to Mar-a-Lago.Speaking of programming for the Inauguration, that reminds me: I won’t be having a show on Wednesday. It’ll be much more captivating to watch the swearing ins and speeches. MISINFORMATIONAccording to research by Zignal Labs, which the Washington Post reported on Saturday, online misinformation about election fraud decreased by 73 percent in the after Twitter banned Trump on January 8.Zignal found that the use of hashtags that were used by right-wing people about the Capitol riot also dipped considerablyMentions of the hashtag #FightforTrump, which was across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social media services in the week before the rally, dropped 95 percent. “#HoldTheLine” and the term “March for Trump” also decreased more than 95 percent.
Say it first, say it loud, say it often, and say it with others. This is key advice Doowan Lee shares with psychological operations professionals, and it's applicable to any innovator trying to gain traction in our digital age. “Short and distort” is a dangerous but effective strategy in digital communication. To combat this, Doowan and the intelligence team at Zignal Labs must both deliberate and try to answer the misinformation efficiently and succinctly. Timing is of the essence, and while Doowan acknowledges the importance of storytelling, framing, and motivation within innovation, there is the key factor of timing. There is nothing irregular about these operations and they are probably the most regular or everyday form of competition we face. Embrace our doctrine. Randle Communications recently released their third annual Digital Influencer Report, tracking digital advocacy trends in 2019. Sad to say that the Capitol Weekly Podcast didn't make the list, but we won't hold that against them. Randle worked with Zignal Labs, hotshots in the field of social media analysis, to produce data for the report. Short take: this year’s report found that digital advocacy is more essential to public affairs and the California Legislature than ever before. Nearly all 120 legislators, and all statewide elected officials are on Twitter; some, like Senator Lorena Gonzalez and Governor Newsom, are thriving in the new social media environment. John Howard and Tim Foster sat down with CEO Jeff Randle in his office at 500 Capitol Mall (with maybe the most spectacular view in Sacramento) to talk about the report and how Twitter has changed politics.
Fake news and misinformation are nothing new to business, and it seems every day there is a political headline that simply isn't true. The ubiquity of devices, internet access and media production software has created a new threat to business, perhaps to society: Deepfakes. In this episode, we are joined by Josh Ginsberg, CEO of Zignal Labs, to discuss how brands and politicians are held to different standards by the law, how the rising threat of deepfakes in the media poses challenges to everyone in business, and how to be prepared and ready to defend your brand from a deepfake attack.
Shep Hyken interviews Josh Ginsberg. They discuss crisis management and why brand integrity is important to customers. The Interview with Josh Ginsberg:When a problem or crisis occurs, it’s essential for customers to see the company take action. However, that action must come from a place of authenticity. If a company has already established a track record of integrity when there is no crisis, it will be much easier for customers to trust they will fix a problem. There are three main components of crisis management. You must act quickly, you must be authentic, and you must communicate consistently.66% of all consumers say that transparency is the most important quality for a brand. That means communicating even when you’re at fault or don’t have answers, being honest in your communication, and being authentic in yourself and your brand.A crisis can have positive outcomes. If a crisis is handled well, it can increase the visibility and reputation of your brand. This, in turn, can lead to customer loyalty.Social media has changed the landscape of brand identity and customer relationships. The many platforms allow anyone and everyone to be an influencer and to spread information quickly. There is a fairly new expectation of companies and brands to tackle issues that may or may not be related to their product. Customers like and trust companies more that publicly take a stand on hot-button issues.Employees have similar expectations of their company’s brand identity and integrity. When employees’ values line up with their companies’, it results in higher employee retention. It’s in companies’ best interests to consider the things their employees value. Employees can be a brand’s best advocates.Quote: “It’s important for customers to see companies take action in a crisis. But that action has to be authentic.” - Josh Ginsberg About: Josh Ginsberg is the founder and CEO of Zignal Labs, a media analytics platform. “Today brands need to surgically remove and filter insights.” How can we make sense of it all? This week on the On Brand podcast I was joined by two old friends, Tim Hayden and DJ Waldow. These two innovative marketers have joined forces as part of the team at Zignal Labs, a realtime digital story-tracking platform. I couldn’t wait to learn about the realtime branding possibilities, politics, and everything in between from Tim and DJ. About Tim Hayden and DJ Waldow With more than 20 years of marketing and business leadership experience, Tim Hayden has been a founder of new ventures such as NION Interactive, GamePlan, and 44Doors and a catalyst for innovative change within some of the world’s largest brands. Along with past guest Tom Webster, he’s the co-author of The Mobile Commerce Revolution. DJ Waldow is an alumnus of the University of Michigan, a knowledge craver, a sponge, and a lover of beer, coffee and people. He’s also a seasoned digital marketing pro with a career that’s taken him from Bronto to Blue Sky Factory to Marketo. With Jason Falls he’s also co-author of The Rebel’s Guide to Email Marketing. DJ was also my co-host on my first podcasting venture, The Work Talk Show. Tim and DJ have recently joined forces to lead marketing and brand building at Zignal Labs, serving as VP of Marketing and Director of Marketing respectively. Zignal Labs is a realtime, cross media story-tracking platform that enables brands to quickly spot trends, see relevant stories unfold, and take action. Brands who use the Zignal Labs platform include Bacardi, Citrix, and HP. On this week’s Social Sound Bite – recorded live at the KXIC studios in Iowa City – Jay and I discussed something of a throwback campaign. Hearkening back to the Navy’s World War II propaganda poster “loose lips sink ships,” the Air Force has repurposed this message for the social age, warning service men and women that “loose tweets destroy fleets.” Listen for the full sound bite and enjoy these useful links to the news, trends, and tips included in this week’s show. Beyond the Sound Bite Air Force ‘Loose Tweets’ slogan warns of social media dangers (Stars and Stripes). And here’s a bit of history and background on the original propaganda campaign “Loose lips sink ships”(Wikipedia). Remember, the Social Sound Bite is just the appetizer! Mobile marketing insights for travel and tourism Strategist and author Tim Hayden has worked with many brands we are familiar with such as Dell, Bacardi, Kraft and Hilton. He is currently VP of Marketing at Zignal Labs a real time cross media story-tracking platform. In 2014 Tim and friend Tom Webster wrote and published a book titled The Mobile Commerce Revolution: Business Success in a Wireless World (Que Biz-Tech) and it is this topic of mobile that we will chat to Tim about today. "It's the person not the device" we need to be thinking of when it comes to mobile marketing. We need to realise that people are no longer stuck at their desk - it is a behavioural shift that impacts how we access information. [Tweet ""Mobile is a behaviour not a technology" @TheTimHayden #tourismtweetup"] The right time right place, your message being there or the right deal being easily accessible the moment someone thinks about you. We can become dependent on our mobile life to find what we need and for it to be pretty much exactly what we are looking for anytime we want to do it. At about the 9.30 minute mark we talk about offline and online marketing in relation to mobile marketing as people have their device with them, can you compel someone to take action, to go to the device in their hand - it could even be a cocktail napkin. Listen for more. Social media and mobile has made it possible to capture the moment wherever we are. Listen from 12.30 minute mark for more. Fewer steps, fewer buttons, less text, larger fonts - can they quickly get to what they need - we have only very short moments to capture a person. From about the 16 minute mark we discuss if brands are too late to take advantage of mobile. "The more people get used to things like Amazon Prime, Starbucks mobile payment, ability to track your pizza...it's other industries that will influence all industries and create this expectation that I can find or I can get what I need with just a couple of clicks..." I ask Tim what he says when people ask him "do I need a mobile app" - listen around the 19 minute mark for the answer. "Responsive right now is the urgency" - we talk more about this at the 21 minute mark and why Google wants you to have a mobile responsive site. At the 24 minute mark Tim gives a couple of final marketing tips for the tourism and travel industry including taking advantage of the moment when your guests are in the moment to engage with them and learn about them and gain insights about them and why they choose you. Listen for more. https://twitter.com/TheTimHayden Click on the pic to learn more about the book! The post Mobile marketing insights for travel and tourism: Ep #30 appeared first on Holly G.
