We talk with James Burroughs about his reign as hollywood's greatest sitcom director, being the son of the Abe Burrows In the genetics of comedy, his book “directed by James Burrows”, “Cheers”, “Will & Grace”, “Mary Tyler Moore”, “Taxi”, “Friends”, the scripps that make him want to direct, the ones that don't, his amazing memory, his humble beginnings, the decade it took him to learn how to direct, working with geniuses like James L. Brooks, Chuck Lori, and Kohan & Mutchnick, Andy Kaufman. And Jimmy explains how his two best friends are Al Michaels and Bruce Springsteen.Bio: James Burrows is one of television's most respected and honored creative talents. Over his distinguished career, Burrows has been the recipient of ten Emmys, five Directors Guild of America Awards, the 1996 American Comedy Awards' Creative Achievement Award, and in 2014 the Television Critics Association's Career Achievement Award in 2006 he was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Science's Hall of Fame and was honored by the US Comedy Arts Festival with their Career Tribute award. He has been the recipient of 22 nominations for the Director's Guild of America Award, thus bestowing him the honor of being the most nominated director in the history of television at the Guild. He was recently honored by the DGA with the Inaugural 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award in Television. In November of 2015 he directed his 1000 th episode which was recognized by a TV Special on NBC in January of 2016. Burrows' success as the director of television pilots is legendary. He just finished the first two episodes of Frasier re-boot season 2, and has wrapped up the pilot “Mid Century Modern” for Fox. He will be at the helm of “Mid Century Modern” this Fall as the show goes to series. The current primetime television schedule features one show “Neighborhood,”- whose pilot episode Burrows directed and one streaming show, the “Frasier Re-boot” which will begin airing Season 2 on Paramount + in mid-September 2024. In January of 2020, he received his fifth DGA Award for directing the Emmy award winning show “Live in Front of a Studio Audience #1: Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons.” He was also asked back to direct “Live in Front of a Studio Audience #3: Different Strokes and The Facts of Life” in December of 2021. In June of2022, he embarked into a new market when he published his autobiography, “Directed by James Burrows.” It has received quite a bit of attention and praise from the industry. Burrows is probably best known as co-creator, executive producer and director of the critically acclaimed series, “Cheers.” The hit show, which aired for 11 seasons, is tied for the most nominated Comedy series in the Television Academy's history and is in third place for most Emmys received by a Comedy Series. Burrows has also received numerous awards for his work on “Will & Grace,” “Frasier,” “Friends,” “Wings,” “Night Court,” “Taxi,” and “Dear John.” For the first time in 25 years, he returned to the stage in the spring of 1998 to direct the highly acclaimed “Man Who Came to Dinner” at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, starring John Mahoney. Burrows learned his trade from the very best, the legendary writer/director Abe Burrows, whose noted career included such classics as “Guys and Dolls,” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” and “Cactus Flower.” Born in Los Angeles and raised in New York, Burrows graduated from Oberlin College and continued his education at Yale, where he earned a master's degree in fine arts. Burrows relocated to Hollywood to work as a dialogue coach for “O.K. Crackerby!,” a short-lived television series starring Burl Ives. When the show ended, he returned to New York and initially worked as a stage manager before directing several off-Broadway shows, such as “The Castro Complex,” and stock productions of “The Odd Couple” and “Never Too Late.” In 1974, Burrows moved back to the West Coast when he was invited to visit MTM Productions in Los Angeles and offered a job directing an episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Mr. Burrows and his wife, Debbie, reside in Los Angeles and between them they have a quartet of daughters.

From the very beginning of the series, this event happens. We believe that it was perpetrated by Iran. Fairly quickly, we learn through the relationships that have been built over time between our heroes, Kate and Hal, and people in other countries that they've negotiated with that the assumptions we're making are completely incorrect. In fact, the people we assume have some sort of malintent toward us are being falsely accused. Someone else is playing on the stereotypes we have of those people in order to send us off in the wrong direction.I feel very fortunate that the medium I'm in is television, which is a very long form of storytelling. You're not telling a single story; you're telling a world. You're inviting people into a world and asking them to live there with you and these characters for a period of time. The best I can do is build a world where people grapple with these important questions and try their best. All I can expect from people and from myself is that we're trying to do something larger than ourselves.”www.creativeprocess.infoIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastimage credit: Netflix

I'm excited today because I get the opportunity to chat with my good friend, Claire Chandler. Team, for your information Claire's sitting in New York City, and she's often referred to as the leadership therapist. Claire's also the founder of the company Talent Boost, and I'm pretty sure we'll get into that more as we get into the conversation. I've been following Claire's work for a number of years, and probably around, we were just talking before we went live somewhere close to 12 months back now. We managed to secure Claire as a guest on the ET project, which was fantastic. We spoke about Claire, a topic, I don't know if you remember, How to Build a Bridge Between HR and Operations. I mean, heck, it's one of my favorite topics. I love the divergence that occurs in that topic alone. Today we're back at it. This time we have the chance to fulfill another one of my passions, which is chatting with authors about their latest book release. And just before we get into that, there's a side note that I had in mind was to mention that I don't know the exact date, Claire, but somewhere this year, I believe, or the end of last year Talent Boost and yourself were recognized by the Best of America Awards for Small Business as Best Entrepreneur for 2023 for the category, I think of business consultant. Matt Goldich! Comedian! Writer! Friend! Delight! Guy with a new special out now! We have a fun chat! You can have a fun listen! AND this is only the first half of our chat! For the second half (which is an even longer half, you know how sometimes one half is longer than another half), subscribe via Apple Podcasts OR head on over to Patreon by clicking right here right now! More official information about the special? From his press release and bio? You got it! MATT GOLDICH - NO QUESTIONS ASKED In his debut stand-up special out February 13, "No Questions Asked", Matt Goldich hilariously tackles all the problems he faces in life, from to the everyday (raising kids in New York City, trying not to appear creepy online) to the societal (book bans, climate change) to the completely unimportant (the awkwardness of buying a coconut.) As one reviewer said about Matt's comedy, "You might not remember the punchlines as much as you recall the life hack about checking a pineapple's freshness, but you'll have had a good time." (Still not sure if that's a compliment). Matt Goldich is a longtime writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers. He has also performed stand-up on Late Night, and appeared in numerous sketches on the show as well. Women Talking is a 2022 drama film written and directed by Sarah Polley. It is based on the Canadian 2018 novel of the same name by Miriam Toews, and inspired by the gas-facilitated rapes that occurred at the Manitoba Colony, a remote and isolated Mennonite community in Bolivia. It features an ensemble cast that includes Oscar-Winning actresses, Rooney Mara , Claire Foy (young “Queen Elizabeth” in Seasons 1 & 2 of Netflix's The Crown), Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Ben Whishaw, and Frances McDormand, who also served as a producer on the film. Women Talking premiered at the 49th Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2022, and was released in the United States via select theaters on December 23, 2022, before a wide release on January 27, 2023, by United Artists Releasing. The film received positive reviews from critics, who lauded Polley's screenplay and direction, the performances of the cast (particularly of Foy, Buckley, and Whishaw) and score. It was named one of the top ten films of 2022 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, won Best Adapted Screenplay at the 28th Critics' Choice Awards, 75th Writers Guild of America Awards, and the 95th Academy Awards, where it was also nominated for Best Picture. In this episode, I take you behind-the-scenes at Tiff (Toronto International Film Festival) 2022 to share with you more about the film, the various ways the women in the film deal with rape & their Mennonite culture in a riveting Q & Q with Polley and the cast minus Frances McDormand who was not in attendance.

He also shares new news about a new exciting project he's embarking on. Sean McNamara is an American director, writer and producer with a focus on family dramas, including the breakout hit feature Soul Surfer. McNamara recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of Brookwell McNamara Entertainment, which he co-founded with business partner David Brookwell. Together, they have produced 30 feature films for Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, TriStar Pictures, New Line Cinema, Lionsgate and Universal Studios. Currently, McNamara is wrapping up production on the film Reagan, a drama starring Dennis Quaid and Penelope Ann Miller. It follows the life of the former president from childhood through his years in Hollywood, his tenure as governor of California and ultimately his time in the Oval Office. The King's Daughter, a romantic fantasy set at Versailles, will debut in theaters in 2022. It features Pierce Brosnan and Kaya Scodelario. On a Wing and a Prayer, a true story starring Dennis Quaid as a plane passenger forced to make an emergency landing to save his family, is in pre-production for MGM produced by Roma Downey. McNamara produced the TV movie Moonrise for Sony Affirm Originals in July, 2022. McNamara also directed the pilot and multiple episodes of Shadrach on Sony's Pure Flix streaming service. Shadrach is a one-hour drama series that tells value-driven stories tackling the issues of financial and physical hardship, love, loss, family, friendship, and faith. Previously, McNamara has helmed the films Orphan Horse, with Jon Voight; The Miracle Season, starring Erin Moriarty, Danika Yarosh, Helen Hunt and William Hurt; Raise Your Voice, featuring Hilary Duff; Hoovey; Field of Lost Shoes; Race To Space and Spare Parts. The latter, which stars Marisa Tomei and George Lopez, was based on the Wired magazine article “La Vida Robot.” For television, McNamara has produced many series and movies, including more than 500 episodes for Hulu, Netflix, CBS, ABC, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. McNamara co-created the hit TV series Beyond the Break for MTV Networks and was executive producer on Disney Channel's Even Stevens and That's So Raven. McNamara's work for Disney Channel won him a BAFTA as well as five Emmy Award nominations. He is a four-time nominee for the Directors Guild of America Awards. Furthermore, he received a prestigious Best Director Imagen Award, for Spare Parts, and won Best Dramatic Feature at the GI Film Festival, for Field of Lost Shoes. Soul Surfer, Spare Parts, and The Miracle Season all earned an A+ on Cinemascore, among other accolades. McNamara is an actor's director, having worked with A-listers such as Pierce Brosnan and Dennis Quaid as well as numerous Academy Award winners and nominees: Helen Hunt, William Hurt, Jon Voight, Marisa Tomei, Mira Sorvino and James Woods. Jimmy Burrows has directed more than one thousand episodes of sitcom television and has earned eleven Emmy Awards and five Directors Guild of America Awards. In 1974 he began his television career directing episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, and Laverne and Shirley. He became the resident director on Taxi and co-created Cheers, directing 243 of the 273 episodes, as well as all 246 episodes of Will and Grace. He has directed the pilots of multiple episodes of Frasier, Friends, Mike & Molly, the pilots of Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory, and hundreds of other shows. His new book is titled: Directed by James Burrows: Five Decades of Stories from the Legendary Director of Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Will & Grace, and More. Some interesting insights from this episode: He operates with kindness. Everyone has to row together and pull equally with everyone else. He doesn't allow ego to get in the way. He has the perfect temperament for TV directing. He doesn't lose his temper, he's patient, he has low ego, and he knows how to encourage others. He feels as a director it's important to “die with your boots on”. That is, to try to do something to make a difference. To provide input to make the best show possible. When deciding whether to work on a show, he likes to meet with the writer and have him/her defend themselves but not be defensive. When asked about same-sex marriage, then Vice President Joe Biden said, “I think Will & Grace probably did more to educate the American public than almost anything anybody's ever done so far. People fear that which is different. Now they're beginning to understand.” His success is attributed to his ability to create a harmony on the set so everyone's involved in making the show better. On his sets, you have to check your ego at the door. “Excellence is to try to be the best you can be in your particular field.” Notes: Book: Directed by James Burrows: Five Decades of Stories from the Legendary Director of Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Friends, Will & Grace, and More

Sitting down with one of the big names in this business this week was a really cool opportunity. I am honored to have on the show today, Academy Award-winning director, producer, and screenwriter, Taylor Hackford. Taylor's has directed films like An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), White Nights (1985), Proof of Life (2000), Dolores Claiborne (1995), Against All Odds (1984), Parker (2013), the iconic Ray Charles biopic, Ray of 2004, and The Comedian (2016) just to name a few. He also has served as president of the Directors Guild of America and is married to the incomparable acting legend Helen Mirren. Long before gaining popularity, Hackford had an interesting journey on his climb-up. Taylor served in the US Peace Corps in Bolivia after college. Before then, while pursuing his studies in law there was an odd turn of events. Inspired by mutual friends who were film students, Hackford, quit school and sought out an entry-level position with KCET TV in LA. There, he learned and grew. He did everything. From office assistance to investigative reporting, which earned him two Emmys and an Associated Press Award, to documentaries, short films, and directing. Hackford racked up his first hit directing and writing Teenage Father in 1978. The film won an Academy Award for Best Short Subject. It explores the life of a 17-year-old senior boy who is a soon-to-be father with his girlfriend, a 15-year-old sophomore. They evaluate the decisions about how they got here, and the decisions on what they will do next.He then went on to direct the very successful romantic drama film, Officer and a Gentleman in 1982. Recognized as the best film of the year and grossing $190 million from a $7 million budget. The film also made history at the Academy Awards where a black man, Louis Gossett Jr. won the Oscars for Best Supporting Actor for the first time in Academy history. The film tells the story of Zack Mayo (Gere), a United States Navy Aviation Officer Candidate who is beginning his training at Aviation Officer Candidate School. While Zack meets his first true girlfriend during his training, a young "townie" named Paula, he also comes into conflict with the hard-driving Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley training his class.Besides winning two Academy Awards, the film also won a BAFTA, two Golden Globes, one Grammy, one NAACP Image Awards, a Japan Academy Film Prize, National Board of Review 10 best films of the year awards, and a Writers Guild of America Awards. If this isn't every director's dream, I don't know what is. Of course, success like this sets the bar even higher for oneself and can make or break any filmmaker. Another of Taylor's classics is 1997 The Devil's Advocate starring Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron, Connie Nielsen, Craig T. Nelson, Judith IveyAn exceptionally adept Florida lawyer is offered a job to work in New York City for a high-end law firm with a high-end boss - the biggest opportunity of his career to date.Taylor Hackford delivered another outstanding film in 2004. Ray. The biographical musical film on the three decades journey of the legendary blues musician, Ray Charles---from his humble beginnings in the South, where he went blind at age seven, to his meteoric rise to stardom during the 1950s and 1960s. It starred triple threat actor, Jamie Foxx. Ray received riveting reviews from the critics and multiple awards including Best Actor at the Academy. Hackford's most recent work he produced or directed is The Comedian, starring Robert De Niro, Leslie Mann, Danny DeVito, and other big names. The film plot has Jackie (Robert De Niro) who is a comic icon, attempting to reinvent himself despite his audience only wanting to know him as a television character he played earlier in his career. It is a look at the life of an aging insult comic named Jack Burke. It was certainly incredible to sit back and chat with Taylor. His Ray Charles story alone is worth the process of admission, trust me. Enjoy my conversation with Taylor Hackford.
On the day Scott Sickles and I recorded his 'Tales of the 2SLGBTQ+' interview, he had just received news of yet another Writers Guild of America Awards nomination for his writing on 'General Hospital'. That day was also the 10 year anniversary of the last episode for 'One Life to Live' which was another show he had a hand in writing. In addition to accomplished writing on ABC Daytime television/Soap Operas, we meant to explore more of his own life being a gay, neurodivergent, mixed-race Korean writer, but the news of the day caused us to focus on One Life to Live/General Hospital most of all. Philip's brief is to spy on Larkin's greatest adversary Peter Champion. Words of Wisdom/What’s Coming Next - 1:11:25 It’s a major Writers Guild of America Awards nomination deep dive to start off the show, analyzing all of the potential Oscar crossovers for March 15th and the Original / Adapted Screenplay categories. We reference recent history, crossover nom/nom stats, how many winners have gone from guild to academy, and we put your brain in a pretzel because we love so many of these WGA nominations. There are indeed stats for & against their crossing over to the Oscars. But we also have quite a lot to talk about with all the snubs and more importantly, all the ineligible contenders in these screenplay categories. The MUAHS awards AKA the Make-Up & Hair Stylists guild awards have higher stakes than usual this year because how they whittle down their shortlist may enable a certain beloved someone to win her first Oscar. So we rant about this for the second time in 3 episodes. Then we needed to take the last half hour and revisit a contending film that we already reviewed back in the fall in Sound Of Metal. This Amazon Prime Original deserved a further study from us. So we dive into its awards resume and re-review all of its chances. We do about 15 minutes of non-spoilers followed by a breakdown of a few of the big scenes after a spoiler warning, and if you missed the outro, stay tuned for more revisits in future episodes. Nomadland is on our schedule for next week after we dive into our Golden Globes Preview Special, where we’ll discuss all kinds of gambling odds and glorious vices. After a victory at the Directors Guild of America Awards, Sam Mendes's '1917' seems poised for dominance on Oscar night. How did the most exciting race in years become so predictable so quickly? And if there are surprises on February 9, what will they be? Sean, Amanda, and Chris Ryan debate whether a '1917' Best Picture win would signal a return to unimaginative Academy tradition (1:17). Then they break down the weekend's box office winners and losers, including Guy Ritchie's tasteless but entertaining crime romp 'The Gentlemen' (22:32). Hosts: Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins Guest: Chris Ryan
The DGA Awards have spoken. We review the winners, & what it means for Oscar Sunday. Alma Ha’rel wins Best First Feature, and we end our opening segment by talking about all our snubs. American Factory won for Best Documentary, and we discuss how it stacks up next to other contenders like For Sama, which we review here as well. But we also breakdown the main event as Sam Mendes won his second DGA Award and what it means for 1917, Mike1’s predictions this awards season, and how predictive the DGA Awards are for the Oscars. After our snubs segment, we go into our traditional category overview format of why each nominee will win or lose before counting down how we’d rank the nominees. Will the technical achievements of 1917 win over the directors branch the way they did the DGA? Could Bong Joon Ho’s movie of the moment pull off an upset? Will a perfect storm erupt for Todd Phillips? Or could Scorsese or Tarantino defy the precursors and the stats to do the impossible? Well, here we come, waltzing down the street, getting hot and sweaty, with all this humidity. Hey hey we’re the Nerds yeah, and people say we look kind of funny, particularly Buck the big Boomer. Haha, admit it, you started to sing that in to the Monkey’s theme tune didn’t you, if not you just went back and tried it. We this week we bring you another awesome episode to listen to while you rest in the shade and enjoy a breeze on the long weekend.First up we are taking flight with Buck, Toyota, and Joby. No, Joby is not a new host, it is an aviation company that Toyota is investing in to increase its presence in the transport arena. Also this is the next step to having vehicles like in the Jetsons. Check out the drawings in the link, a tilt-engine vehicle that looks like a cross between a drone and a helicopter. This is seriously cool. Also while looking around at all the different transport tech news Buck also found some artists renderings of potential vehicles for space travel from Lexus. Wait till you hear what Buck and Professor think one of them looks like. Which is your favorite option?Next up DJ has a story about the Producers Guild Awards, in particular 1917. Want to know what movies won which awards, listen in. Also you can hear about the movie 1917, with some of the various story plot points to look out for. For those unfamiliar with it 1917 is a movie set in World War One. It is the story of a soldier and his friend trying to save the lives of 1600 British troops. There are some funny parts, but it is a moving drama based on stories told by the Grand Father of the Director Sam Mendes. DJ has also asked for your predictions for the Oscars and who you think should be nominated and win, so let us know on either: Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.Next up we have Professor bringing us an update on the saga of Crytek and CIG (Star Citizen). Would you believe that so far CIG have spent over $900,000 on this legal matter? Yep, for the company started on kickstarter and now sells space fleets for $27000 they are really going hard. Want to know what has happened then listen in. As usual we have all the shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events of interest. Until next week, please remember to take care of yourselves, look out for each other, and stay hydrated.Toyota joins Joby Aviation - https://www.technology.org/2020/01/17/toyota-is-joining-forces-with-the-leader-of-commercial-evtol-technology-electric-air-taxis-are-coming/Lexus brings us drawing of Moon/space vehicles - https://www.engadget.com/2020/01/18/lexus-moon-space-vehicles/‘1917’ Becomes Oscar Front-Runner After Producers Guild Win - https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/19/movies/1917-producers-guild-america-award.htmlCrytek vs Star Citizen an update - https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/eqedb8/crytek_vs_star_citizens42_update_cigs_response_to/Does Google Stadia Stink like old socks? - https://www.businessinsider.com.au/google-stadia-early-adopters-giving-up-2020-1?utm_source=reddit.com&r=US&IR=TGames PlayedProfessor– Steamworld - http://imageform.se/game/steamworld-dig/Rating: 4/5Buck– Thunder Run: War of Clans - https://www.facebook.com/ThunderRunWarOfClans/?epa=SEARCH_BOXRating: 3/5DJ– Darwin Project - https://store.steampowered.com/app/544920/Darwin_Project/?fbclid=IwAR0Sp5FnKYv9vrxu9FdrXRH5PLWk4rooNt8vIqMEPAnx3GvOjU-Ob8cGZxcRating: 4/5Other topics discussedJoby Aviation (American venture-backed aerospace company and developer of VTOL personal air vehicles designed for air taxi services)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joby_AviationNine News Australia - Mates go fishing from drone towed deck chair- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LLx8JKCrhMFederal Aviation Administration (FAA) (governmental body of the United States with powers to regulate all aspects of civil aviation in that nation as well as over its surrounding international waters.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Aviation_AdministrationCivil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) (Australian national authority for the regulation of civil aviation.)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Aviation_Safety_AuthorityThe Verge: Uber’s air taxis will resemble nice helicopters on the inside-https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/11/18661129/uber-air-taxi-cabin-interior-elevate-helicopterWant to escape Sao Paulo's traffic? Plus, we kinda scream & yell like we’re still living in 2005 over Brad & Jennifer & that hug. We’re sorry that we’re not sorry. Our Best Picture discussion comes in two parts during this episode as we discuss the SAG Ensemble win from Parasite, and later on, we break down the PGA Award for 1917. How do we power rank the Best Picture nominees? What must Once Upon A Time In Hollywood do at the BAFTA’s? Or is 1917 gonna run away with the year? Do let us know your thoughts on this as well. The SAG’s also seemed to lock up all four of the acting categories. So...ummm… yeah, we’re gonna have to get creative with how we do our next 3 acting category overview pods. But we do discuss some crossover stats on all of the SAG & PGA wins throughout this episode to make our points, and they do seem pretty definitive here. We discuss all of the winners from the Producer Guild of America Awards, you get the rest of our Best Picture discussion, and then we also talk about Animated Feature amongst other wins. Finally, the ACE EDDIE’s editing awards were announced, and Parasite continued to surge with it’s big win there. To wrap things up, we review The Edge Of Democracy & After Maria on Netflix, Learning To Skateboard In A Warzone (If You’re A Girl) on A&E, and Nefta Football Club on youtube. Soul Dog: Investigative Journalist’s Poodle JourneyEmmy award-winning investigative journalist Elena Mannes shares her story of the journey on which she embarked with her first dog, a Standard Poodle. http://mannesproductions.com/soul-dog-a-journey-into-the-spiritual-life-of-animals-new-book-by-elena-mannes/ (Soul Dog – A Journey into the Spiritual Life of Animals) chronicles Mannes’ determined quest to harness her inner dog whisperer by learning to decipher the unspoken language present in every animal-human relationship. “I brought Brio home… and it wasn’t really going according to plan. I didn’t talk dog. I heard about animal communicators, but I was a real skeptic. I’m a TV journalist, I don’t like woowoo things. “(Brio) changed me in so many ways as the years went by and the connection became so deep and really life changing for me,” Mannes said. Mannes also addressed her decision to choose a purebred dog. “I respect people who rescue, but in my situation at the time I really didn’t know enough. I had a sense of Standard Poodles that they were so smart. I was scared to death (of adding a dog to my life),” Mannes said, adding that the predictability of a purebred dog helped provide some comfort in this decision.*** Elena Mannes is a multi-award-winning independent documentary director/writer/producer as well as an author. Tina Neal is the esteemed Scientist-in-Charge of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. She and her team oversaw the response to last year's eruption of Mt. Kilaueau, which lasted more than 100 days, destroyed more than 700 homes, and displaced thousands, but did not result in a single human fatality. That herculean effort has earned Tina a spot as a finalist for the 2019 Service to America Awards. In this episode, we discuss what it took to pull off such a miraculous response, the appropriate relationship between scientist and policymaker, and how the US Geological Survey assists U.S. development efforts around the globe.

Aired Thursday, 7 February 2019, 7:00 PM ETThe Spiritual Life of Animals with Elena MannesFor eons, dogs have held the title of “man’s best friend, and stories abound of their loyalty, service, and their sometimes seemingly miraculous ability to both understand and communicate to others their human companions’ needs in emergency situations. And for as long as we humans have bonded with our canine companions, we have wondered whether our dogs have thoughts and feelings.Elena Mannes is an award-winning television journalist and producer. Looking for companionship after a near-fatal car crash, she decided to get her first dog. But what she found with her dog Brio shook the foundations of her physical and spiritual worlds, sending her on a quest to discover the nature of his spiritual origins and to contemplate and seek out the possibility of interspecies communication—even after death. Motivated by her experience with an animal psychic, Mannes produced a filmed segment with Diane Sawyer featuring the same psychic, who described Sawyer’s country house and her dog’s favorite spots in the yard.Elena Mannes joins Sandie in this week’s show to discuss her book, Soul Dog: A Journey into the Spiritual Life of Animals, in which she shares her investigations into the spiritual life of animals and her with animal communicators, psychics, and scientists specializing in animal intelligence such as Rupert Sheldrake.About the Guest:ELENA MANNES is an award-winning independent documentary director/writer/producer whose honors include six Emmy Awards, a George Foster Peabody Award, two Directors Guild of America Awards, and nine Cine Golden Eagles. Featuring great performances by Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen, "Green Book" is the unlikely potential frontrunner for the Best Motion Picture Academy Award after winning big at the Golden Globes and the Producers Guild of America Awards. But is it any good? Is it a charming tale of an inter-racial friendship forged under duress in the Deep South? Or is it a "white saviour" movie disguised as an odd-couple, road trip film? Who is the main character in the film, and what does that say about about its racial politics? And can or should this movie be judged without having regard to the context of our times? These questions, and more, are pondered in our most stimulating episode yet.

Today we explore two different approaches to reviving Modernist buildings: preserving them or building them from scratch! Michael Miner is a documentary filmmaker who since 2002 has devoted his career entirely to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, chronicling the master architect’s buildings in a series of films. Miner’s first Wright film, Sacred Spaces, was completed in 2005 followed by A Child of the Sun, the story of the West Campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland and Romanza, which was released in 2011. Miner's fourth film is called Masterpieces. But here what's really interesting - he's on a mission to actually build some of Wright's unbuilt buildings starting in Banff, Canada. Liz Waytkus is the Executive Director of Docomomo US, the leading preservation organization dedicated to the preservation of modern architecture, landscapes, and design. She has worked to increase the awareness of and appreciation for significant modern sites and developed annual Docomomo US National Symposium and the Modernism in America Awards. Her organization's most recent success was preserving the Ambassador Grill near the United Nations in NYC.

He also teased Dig's friendship with Dinah Drake, the new Black Canary, as well as the looming threat of General Walker and Team Arrow's visit to Russia. About his role in the team, he said, “He's a serviceman. He's a soldier. He's the guy who lays on a grenade. So that's what he immediately gets to. He gets to helping Dinah. He gets back to helping the team. He sees that Felicity is compromised, and he calls her on it immediately. Before he gets back out on the field — which he does! — we'll see him kind of getting back to service, of being a help, which is in the best possible way I could say that… but the moral help, I should say. The moral compass. And the team needs it. When he comes back, the team needs it. Dinah needs it, and Felicity particularly needs it.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-david-ramsey-spartan-black-canary-dinah-drake-general-walker-russia-felicity-bratva-prometheus-interview/ GENERAL DC TV NEWS The JSA Returns In This Synopsis For LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Season 2 Episode 12: "Camelot/3000" (Date: 03 Feb 2017) ALL FOR ONE — The Legends continue their quest to hunt down the Spear of Destiny before the pieces fall into the hands of the Legion of Doom. Variety reports Greg Berlanti's “Black Lightning” just received an official pilot order from the network. According to the report, The CW will stagger their superhero programming throughout the year to avoid scheduling five straight nights of supehero series. “I don't think so,” Berlanti said at the time. “If we're lucky enough that that exists, that that show exists, I don't think those worlds will cross over.” However, seeing as the pilot has just shifted from Fox to The CW, it's hard to rule anything out. The set photos depict not only Criss but also Keiynan Lonsdale as Kid Flash, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter and Carlos Valdes as Vibe. Titled “Duet,” the crossover will kick off March 20 with a lead-in on “Supergirl,” similar to how the setup for last fall's “Invasion!” was handled, and then continue on the March 21 episode of “The Flash.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/flash-supergirl-music-meister-set-photos/ To Celebrate The Release Of THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE, DC TV Shows Get A LEGO Makeover (Date: 06 Feb 2017) The LEGO Batman Movie is receiving rave reviews, and it appears as if Warner Bros. is going all out this week to give it one final promotional push. That involves giving a LEGO makeover to many of their hit TV shows, and below you'll find Minifigure versions of characters from Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, and Supergirl. Disappointingly, the eclectic cast of Legends of Tomorrow hasn't been included here. Their meeting isn't so much epic as…well, confusing. That's because the gang learns that while Batman may be an unparalleled detective, he's apparently not the world's greatest speller. However, we didn't know that she would return in another future episode (or perhaps just stick around after the Grodd episode) and confront the god of speed. But thanks to some reworking of The CW's schedule, the finale episode will air the following Tuesday, April 4th. The most interesting thing about this is that Legends will air in The Flash's timeslot on April 4th, and will be followed by the third season premiere of iZombie. They call it Versus, where they pit one character against the other. But instead of something like Super Hero Beatdown where we see the actual fight, this is more giving the histories and strengths of the characters and letting the fans decide. For their first episode they've decided to pit the Emerald Archer versus the Scarlet Speedster. This indicates that Diamond expect a certain amount of returnability, but not that much. Well, it seems that DC Comics seems to have overdone it this time. They made the first six issues of all the DC Rebirth twice-monthly launch comics returnable, more than ever before. Ostensibly to allow retailers to find a ceiling limit on sales to customers, to not have to order conservatively, and to be confident in ordering big. Which has allowed certain titles that had slipped away in recent years, specifically Superman and Flash, to find an appreciative audience. However, there is a cost for that kind of thing. And while sales of DC Comics are also up, so is the returnability, at record high levels, and something DC and Diamond didn't anticipate. Which is why those pallet photos are meant to be quite a revelation. Could this be why the Diamond 2016 end-of-year statistics have been so delayed?
