Join Maggie and Ian for the 78th winner, American crime drama Crash. Shallow characters, surface-level commentary, and several excruciatingly gratuitous scenes didn't impress either of our hosts.
For our Unique Best Picture Winner "Two-Shot" episode, Madeline and Julian finally see (and Emilio rewatches) two of the more upsetting upset winners of the Academy Award's last twenty years, Paul Haggis' passion project 'Crash' and Peter Farrelly's mismatched-buddy-road-trip picture 'Green Book'. They reflect on what social conditions existed that might have led to their ascension to Best Picture consideration, as well as what was internal (and in some cases endemic) within the Academy that put these films over the top. The trio is firmly in agreement that the racial themes of 'Crash', while important to consider, are handled so poorly and lazily rendered on screen. With very few exceptions, the redeeming qualities of 'Crash' are practically non-existent. And while Emilio agrees with the others that 'Green Book' is not Best Picture worthy, he makes a case for why this movie is a little better than its current reputation would have you think it is. It's Oscars season and so we're back with Matt Belenky to spar with a Best Picture winner: Million Dollar Baby. Starring and directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Paul Haggis a year before he penned yet another Best Picture Winner in Crash, this pugilistic take on euthanasia is a classic tearjerker. It is also a mixed punching bag: filled with melodramatic fetishization of the southern bumpkin archetype, brilliant cinematography, a florid narration by none other than Morgan Freeman (channeling strong Shawshank Redemption vibes), and a plucky Best Actress performance (earned or not) by the always endearing (if not a little cloying) Hilary Swank (to be fair, everyone in this is a maudlin caricature, to degrees). Though nowhere near as bad as we make it out to be (one might say it's more appropriately "between nowhere and goodbye"), Million Dollar Baby received a good old-fashioned beatdown on this episode. If you're in the mood for some Academy Award-adjacent schadenfreude, you've come to the right place. Enjoy!!!

In 2005 a beautiful film showcasing the lives of people who undergo a heartfelt change of how they view themselves and the world around them in an environment filled with a culture of hate and prejudice. We laughed, we cried and we fell in love with these people on screen. That movie of course... is Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger. Oh? What's that? Sorry folks but there appears to have been a mix up, the movie we are actually covering and ended up winning the 2006 Academy Award for Best Picture is Paul Haggis' film... Crash...
Today I'm joined by legendary character actor William Fichtner. I had him on the show to discuss his latest film 88. Having appeared in a wide range of films along with television and theater roles over the course of his career, William Fichtner continues to carve out a distinctive reputation as one of our most versatile and talented actors, whether in comedy or drama, action or character study. He is one of Hollywood's most distinct and familiar faces. He recurred on HBO's Entourage from 2009-2011 and played ‘FBI Agent Alexander Mahone' for three seasons on Fox's hit drama series, Prison Break. Director Paul Haggis is being accused of sexual assault in Italy and the start of his trial is going to be kicking off soon. According to Haggis, he made some errors in judgement but he didn't sexually assault anyone. Jack Twist? Jack NASTY! That's right, get ready to get into one of the most highly-esteemed gay films of our generation, Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain from 2005. In case you've somehow managed to miss this one in the last 18 years, this film follows the years-long illicit affair between two shepherds, Ennis (Heath Ledger) and Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal). What starts as a romantic fling while working together one summer soon becomes an emotional attachment that they just can't quit, even while building separate lives hundreds of miles apart. This movie continues to impress your hosts, from gorgeous cinematography, an impeccable supporting cast (including Oscar nominee Michelle Williams), and a touching screenplay that we think leaves just enough room for some ambiguity. This film also holds a reputation as being one of the biggest Oscar snubs of recent film history, losing Best Picture to Paul Haggis' Crash, a loss that continues to boggle minds. What would have kept audiences from connecting with these characters strong enough for that win? Does Ang Lee know how gay sex happens? Will Kevin stop bringing up Memoirs of a Geisha? This and more in this week's Cinema Very Gay! Speaking of more, the sun is soon setting on our queer-coded Disney villain mini-series, but we couldn't end without discussing the usurper king, Scar, voiced by Jeremy Irons in Disney's Lion King (1994). This sniveling and scheming lion all but tells the audience that he's more into lions than lionesses! Scar gives us some familiar coded tropes (the smaller stature, the sibilant sneer), but we still can't help but have fun with his dryness. Be prepared! It's a good episode.

It's hard to overstate the impact of the Shitty Media Men List on the media landscape back in October 2017. If you've never heard of it, good for you (not said sarcastically). If you have, you know it was a Google spreadsheet where 70 women, who remained anonymous, input names of media colleagues and acquaintances along with their alleged misbehavior, from creepy DMs to rape. This was a week after the Harvey Weinstein bombshell in The New Yorker, and men on the list lost jobs, friends, and reputations. As #MeToo was exploding, the idea of fighting back wasn't popular. Stephen Elliott did it anyway. The writer, filmmaker and founding editor of the literary site The Rumpus filed a defamation lawsuit against the woman behind the list, Moira Donegan. In this week's New York Magazine, journalist Lila Shapiro tackles the controversy and the personalities behind it as the legal battle heads toward court. Elliott, a friend of Nancy's, was afraid the story would be a hit job. It wasn't. Both Nancy and Sarah found it balanced, if favorable to the spirit of the list. Elliott agreed to come on the show to talk about his experience of being accused of rape, the personal and professional fallout, and whether these sorts of campaigns can ever (or eventually) have a positive impact. One detail not included in the story was Elliott's car being spray-painted with the word RAPIST and his garage marked with the letters S C U M. We're not sure why this was left out; Elliott says he sent the photos as well as the police report to the author. We share them with you here.We also discuss a current raft of #MeToo lawsuits, including cases against Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Paul Haggis, and Danny Masterson. The details aren't pretty. Finally, the girls talk about Sacheen Littlefeather, the Native activist best known for refusing Marlon Brando's Oscar for The Godfather on his behalf. A recent SF Chronicle piece exposed Littlefield as a “pretendian” who invented her Indian background, according to her sisters. (The family was Mexican.) Nancy, with her connections to the Native world, could potentially be exercised about this; she is not.No hotbox this episode, but we do reveal that Rachel Dolezal has an OnlyFans. Director Paul Haggis is being accused of sexual assault in Italy and the start of his trial is going to be kicking off soon. According to Haggis, he made some errors in judgement but he didn't sexually assault anyone. However, the records from the hospital, testimony from the accuser and police reports seem to tell a different tale.
