‘Do not market a black character as important and then push them aside.’ - John Boyega, GQ Magazine https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/culture/article/john-boyega-interview-2020In a recent interview, John Boyega, the actor who played Finn expressed his frustration and anger at how the character was treated in the Star Wars postquels. Jared Sylva and Matthew Westfox use that interview as a jumping off point to discuss all the potential this character had and how they weren’t realized. Could we have had two jedi? What stories could you tell my digging deep into the mindset of a stormtrooper who goes rogue, and how does he inspire others? What happens when a soldier raised by the army from birth, has to shoot at his formers compatriots who are also former child soldiers?Jared Sylva is a life-long Star Wars fan and a professional geek as the Organized Play department manager for Star City Games. who loves sharing the movies and shows he loves with his two young children. Rob & Matthew’s excellent time travel episode! After months of ranting about the logical and ethical problems with time travel, Matthew invited OG Time Lord Rob McKenzie to explain it all. We look at different theories of time travel, and which movies and tv shows make the most sense. We look at moral questions such as human agency vs. a predetermined time line, who gets to decide what the timeline ‘should’ be, what is the responsibility of someone who can go back in time to make things ‘right,’ and will Matthew ever find a time travel story that doesn’t drive him up the damn wall. Particular focus on Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever, Umbrella Academy, and Bill & Ted. Support this podcast through our Patreon page! Comics History - The Golden Age, Part 1- WWIIWhen talking about superheroes, and the choices they make or how they do what they do, a favorite topic is to wonder where they started, and how they've evolved from writer to writer, and from page to screen and back again. Today we kick off a special series in which Matthew will be joined by superhero history whiz Jess Plummer, as we trace the history and development of these caped characters. Look for new episodes about once a month.Today in our inaugural episode we’re going back to the beginning, and looking at the start of the golden age, from Superman’s first appearance, to the end of World War II. We’re talking about the Jewish origins of Superman, the gender theories of the creator of Wonder Woman, what is the nature of a hero, and why do so many of these characters have so much fun punching Nazis/Jessica Plummer lives in New York and loves Superman very very much. I'm on vacation this week, and the internet is a lot worse than I had hoped up here, so I wasn't able to produce a new episode. Instead, here is an episode that went out on Superhero Ethics about the Ethics of the Clone Wars TV show, so it seemed deeply relevant to this 'cast as well. Enjoy, and we'll be back with new episodes soon! The Clone Wars TV show takes the well known stories of the fall of Anakin and the Jedi and gives them nuance, and moral complexity, and explores questions with relevance for our own world. What happens to peacekeepers when they become generals? What is the moral value of clones, and how were they treated? And what happens when people fight a war without asking why? Star Wars fans and former guests Paul Hoppe and Jonah Kellman join me to dive into these questions and more as we look at the ethical questions from The Clones Wars TV show. For our 100th episode we had FIVE guests, join us for a panel discussion of some of our favorite ethical questions. Who should a hero be accountable to? What makes a good villain? And, would it be ethical for someone with mind control to force everyone to wear masks until the pandemic ends? Our all star lineup included former co-hosts Paul Hoppe and Jacob Milicic, and frequent guests Jessica Plummer, Becky Allen, and Matthew Carroll. Ep: 98 - The RIghts of the Unpowered- Legend of Korra S1, and The Boys What happens to normal people, when others get powers? What rights do they have and are those rights respected? And when the people in power push the non powered around- what happens when the non powered push back? Paul and I talk about non powered people in powered worlds. We focus in particular on Avatar: Legend of Korra, season 1, and how it handles this question, but we broaden the topic, and cover a number of other stories. Whether you’re a hardcore Korra fan, or have never seen it, you’ll be able to follow the discussion. Want to continue the discussion with us? While Ozark is a bit outside our normal topic and doesn’t have many heroes- it certainly has a lot of villains with different ethical perspectives, all of whom are convinced they’re the good one! Stranded Panda extraordinaire Ashley Coffin joins me as we talk about each of the characters and difficult choices they have to make. Whether your love the show, or have no idea what’s going on, there is a lot here to dive into and enjoy. Ashley Coffin is a nerd girl hailing from Philadelphia, Pa who loves all things Marvel. She is very into horror movies, has probably seen whatever show you are watching, and can frequently be found on Stranded Panda hang outs, commenting on podcasts and kicking all of our asses at MCU trivia. She would also like you to tell your dog she said hi.Instagram: electrical_ashTwitter: @AshleyannCoffin Want to continue the discussion with us? What’s more fun than taking an ethical system from one world, and trying to find how our favorite characters from other worlds fit into it. In this episode we start with the ethical color pie from Magic the Gathering, in which we look at ethics not in terms of actions, but motivations and mind sets. We explain the system and then focus on other characters- even if you know nothing about MtG, if you like talking about how Tony Stark, Malcolm Reynolds, and Han Solo, all have similar ethical frameworks, this episode is for you! Rob McKenzie is a science fiction and fantasy reader and Magic the Gathering judge from Minnesota. He is passionate about interesting books, running great gaming events, and helping other people have fun with their passions. Meg Baum is a Level 3 MTG Judge and all around irredeemable nerd who loves stories, cooking, and adventures. She is the Judge Manager for Pastimes and moonlights occasionally as a Decontamination Technician at nuclear power plants. You can find her on Twitch/Twitter/Facebook/basically everything @mbgeekgirl As part of our conversation about Magic the Gathering, and our ongoing discussions of justice and how we can help, we want to tell you about a great fundraiser. #MagicArtChallenge is a charity fundraiser for Black Lives Matter and Black causes. Community members are auctioning original Magic art, sketches, and more to raise money for charity. The challenge has raised $20,000 so far! https://magicartchallenge.scryfall.com/ Want to continue the discussion with us? Why does James Bond keep getting women killed, and can you be a spy without it? Paul Hoppe is back to talk about the ethics of espionage, with a particular focus on the TV show, Burn Notice! Whether you’re a long time fan of Burn Notice, or never seen it, we dig into questions that apply across the genre, such as the ethics of getting others to do your dirty work for you, fighting for a client or particular mission vs. what may be ‘right,’ and how far into a secret identity you can go, before you lose sense of yourself. Ep 94 - There is no Racism in Ba Sing Se The beloved Avatar:The Last Airbender is back on Netflix, and we’re talking about it, focusing on a story arc with incredible resonance with our own world; Ba Sing Se. What is it about denial, and closing your eyes to the problems of the world, that people find so appealing? How do you break through to someone who believes anything that contradicts what they’ve been taught, is a liar and a traitor? And how does this story line parallel the issues we face today, especially in the time since the killing of George Floyd. Want to continue the discussion with us? In partnership with the MCU Cast and all the great folks at the Stranded Panda Podcast Network, we are kicking off a review drive! Reviews are the best way to help this show grow- it moves us up the lists on Itunes and the other podcast services, gives more people a chance to find us, and join the conversation! We’ve got big goals, but we need your help! If you write a 5 star review of Superhero Ethics) between now and Sunday June 14th, you'll be entered into a raffle. At least one of the review writers for Superhero Ethics will win their choice of an MCUCast or Superhero Ethics T-shirt! Every review will also enter you into a drawing with review writers for other Standed Panda shows, with the winner getting a free copy of the Avengers video game, coming this fall. You only have to write a sentence or two, but make it a real one- simply writing “I want the shirt” sadly doesn’t help. The easiest way to write a review is to search for this podcast on Itunes, but you can write a review on any podcast host that uses them. Just be sure to let us know by emailing superheroethics@gmail.com if you do something other than Itunes. And remember, even if you don't think we don’t deserve 5 stars, we'd still love a review, so we can learn more about what we are doing well and how we can improve. Stan Lee was a great story teller, but he never hid his strong convictions, or his desire to use the stories he told to give people a new way to think about the issues of his time. Nor did the writers of Black Panther, Avatar the Last Airbender, Star Wars, or so many of the shows we love.Matt and Jeff are back, and we had a great episode on the ethics of Star Wars planned- but with all that has been happening in our world in the last week in terms of the killing of George Floyd, and all that has happened since, we just felt like it was important for us to address that. So today we’re talking about what it means to be a fan, and a content creator, in difficult times, and how the stories we are such fans of help shape our understandings of violence and authority and racism and cops and everything else. Here is the article on Black Panther and Allyship that Matthew mentioned - https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/how-black-panther-creates-a-model-for-good-allyship/ In partnership with the MCU Cast and all the great folks at the Stranded Panda Podcast Network, we are kicking off a review drive! Today’s episode is bittersweet as it marks Jacob’s last as co-host. To give him a proper send off, we’re diving into a topic he’s been eager to talk about- using mind control to make people stop doing bad things, in particular in the video game, Persona 5. Is altering, or even completely changing, someone’s brain, a morally appropriate way to stop people from hurting others? If so, what acts justify it, and who decides? What does mind reprogramming look like as punishment in Babylon 5 and for Prof. X?Jacob is stepping down as co-host, but he will remain a supporter and occasional guest of the show. He’s had a great run and brought so much to podcast that I’ll forever be grateful for. Please join me in paying tribute to Jacob by sharing a favorite memory of his time, or just thanking him for being a part of this.More info on the episode of Babylon 5 we discussed can be found here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passing_Through_GethsemaneYou can download the episode with a right click and clicking “save link as” or subscribe by searching for Superhero Ethics on Itunes or on StitcherWant to continue the discussion with us? Episode 83 - Who Watches the Watchers who Watch the Watchmen?Who are heroes accountable to, is a question we frequently explore on this show. In this episode, we dive into the movie and comic book* versions of The Watchmen and its interesting take on the question of accountability. What happens when so called heroes shrug and watch as their friends do terrible things? Would the threat of alien invasion bring peace to our planet? And is anyone in this story remotely heroic?*Jacob had not seen the TV show, so we stuck to the movie. We will be exploring ethical questions from the TV show in a future episode. We cheer when our heroes give an evil bad guy their much deserved fate. But what happens when our hero has to fight someone who isn’t evil, they are just in our hero’s way? Should more heroes be like Jessica Jones? Should it matter to our hero if the person they are fighting is being mind controlled, or lied to or it is otherwise not their fault? Should it matter to the audience?
