Welcome to Greatheart's Table, the podcast for pastors and others who care about ministry. I'm Randy Greenwald, and, in the words of Firefly's Malcolm Reynolds, “I aim to misbehave.” Well, not much, really. I'm going to whine, and some may judge it to be in poor taste for a pastor to whine. But I disagree. […]

Back to the Pictures

Take our love, take our land, take us where we cannot stand. We don't care, we're still free, we review these flicks for thee...And this episode is no different with 2005's Sci-fi-Space-Opera-Action-Western film Serenity. One of the true first films our Terrific Trio viewed together way back in 2005. In this episode, they dive into a pre-established world of Serenity, a cinematic blockbuster that rose from the ashes of the short-lived, but perpetually-adored, Fox TV series Firefly. Listen in as the boys discuss the possibilities of Reaver Radio, the would-be casting of Nicholas Brendan as Malcolm Reynolds and who the fuck was Shepherd Book, anyway?

West Side Story meets the TV show Firefly. We're digging into fake gallantry, a duel with swords, and fighting back against those who feel the need to control others. It's all on Pub Songs & Stories #257. WELCOME TO PUB SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. This is the audio liner notes for the songs I record and play. The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. If you enjoy this podcast and my music, please join the Club. You'll get 2-4 podcasts per month. I'm not really surprised. But I'm really sad. This is my first pizza stone. I didn't know how to cook with it when I started, let alone take care of it. And to be completely honest, I'm also a bit negligent on a lot of things. As I took the broken stone out of the oven, I carefully cleaned off the burnt cornmeal that remains after making pizza. I learned through trial and error that if you have cornmeal on the stone, the pizza slides off it easier. A lot of that cornmeal falls onto the bottom of the oven. What do I usually do with that cornmeal? I leave it there. I don't finish the job. It's sort of like the twisty tie that came off the finished loaf of bread. I saw it lying by the back door on the floor. Usually, I leave it where it lies in my home. I don't clean it up. But I picked it up yesterday. I'm still learning about personal responsibility. It's been haunting me a lot more as time goes by and our world becomes more partisan. It's the first stepping stone for communal responsibility. Something just as important, yet just as ignored. I understand better now. Picking up that twisty or cleaning up the stove is essential for the health of our home. It also means I have less time doing things I WANT to do. However, it could mean that the pizza stone that I loved might not crack. I wouldn't have wasted good money and added waste to our environment. Hm… I just finished re-reading Shepherd's Tale, the story behind Shepherd Book of Firefly. I feel this whole thought process is relevant. I'll let you know more when we publish the new episode of In the ‘Verse. In the meantime, I have a new Firefly song to talk about in today's show. But first, let's talk about upcoming shows. 2:50 - UPCOMING SHOWS SEP 10: Middle Tennessee Highland Games & Celtic Festival, Hendersonville, TN SEP 14: Coffee with The Celtfather SEP 22: Hobbit Drinking Songs Livestream @ 8 PM ET SEP 28-OCT 2: ALEP in Shakertown, KY OCT 8: Ironshield Brewing in Lawrenceville, GA @ 7:00 – 10:00 PM. OCT 14-16: MultiVerse, Atlanta, GA 3:58 - STORY OF FAVOR OF A DANCE “Favor of a Dance” is a single I released at the end of June. It features the music of Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer, with backing vocals by Jamie Haeuser. I love the instrumentation that Vicki and Jonny added to the song. Jonny's guitar takes a big lead on it. And Vicki's flute playing adds a joyful, touch of brilliance. I liked the song before. But I love it so much more with those two playing along. The song is based on the episode Shindig, the 4th episode of Firefly. I originally wrote the song for the 4th episode of In the ‘Verse. That's a podcast I make with my friend Mikey Mason. I recommend you check out that TV and podcast episodes too, or at least the synopsis, if you want context for the song, but I'll share a shortened version for those who don't do that. I love the story of my song. “Favor of a Dance” is based on the episode “Shindig”. It's a love triangle about respect, rules, and kindness. In the episode, Malcolm Reynolds runs into Inara at a ball. She and her customer, Atherton Wing, are dancing. But despite his fake gallantry, Atherton proves himself to be the kind of man who believes in controlling women. Malcolm picks up on that and picks a fight with Atherton by asking Inara for a dance. This leads to a punch in the face and eventually a duel with swords. I feel like my story does a good job following the storyline of the episode. The first verse talks about the “social event of the season”. It talks about Mal's and Inara's joy of dancing, and ends with the hostile, controlling nature of Atherton. Verse two digs into that hostility. “His hand is tight around your arm”. I love that line. I have trouble coming up with good metaphors when I'm writing songs. Especially the initial drafts. I frequently add those in later, like I did here. I feel like this is a great line to show the mean nature of the antagonist. The last lines of the second verse dig into the rules aspect of the episode and how sometimes you have to break the rules to bring kindness to a situation. Each chorus has a slightly different phrase in it. “Give me the favor of a dance” was a line that Mal respectfully uses to ask if he can dance with Atherton's guest. And it's all done from the perspective of Mal. The third verse again continues the original story. Mal and Inara dance even though Mal is not a great dancer. But they have a nice time, at least until Atherton breaks up the dance and pulls Inara away from Mal. This is where the story for me takes a twist. The two main characters draw swords to fight. And thematically the song starts to remind me of West Side Story. If you haven't seen West Side Story, you're missing out. That musical was written as a modern version of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. There are some brilliant musical-based, choreographed fight songs. In one scene, there's this big dance off. Lots of posturing, back and forthing as they threaten each other. This culminates in a big Rumble with even more fantastic dancing to music and then the death of one of the main characters. “Favor of a Dance” makes me think of those dance scenes. Except my song is doing the same thing, lyrically. So the second chorus talks about the animosity of Atherton. But it also uses the idea of sword-fighting as dancing. Or fighting as dancing. What is that, a boxing phrase, “you wanna dance with me?” That's how the chorus ends. You can hear a little grumble in my voice as I sing that one asking for a fight. The final verse announces the defeat of the antagonist. It uses the idea of a puddle of blood. But instead, I changed the line to a “puddle of shame” because in the episode, Atherton isn't killed. He's stabbed, because “mercy is the mark of a great man,” says Mal. Then he stabs Atherton a few more times and says, “I guess I'm just a good one.” The dance and the verse conclude. Our hero has won. But he doesn't feel like it. It just feels like a different game that people play. Different rules. A different world. Some people feel the need to control others, to install their own values on someone else. That is the opposite of kindness. People should be in charge of their own bodies. Their own lives. They should make their own decisions as long it doesn't affect another living, thinking human being. And yes, I am referring also to the right of women to choose what happens to their bodies too. They should have that individual right.  And not having legislators try to control and manipulate them through legislation. But that's a tangent. Ultimately, “Favor of a Dance” is about kindness and generosity. I took the idea of generosity from my friend Jamie Haeuser, who sings on the song. She has continually proven herself to be overflowing in generosity. She's one of the most generous and giving people I know. Whatever game we play, we should approach things through kindness and generosity. Whether that means not throwing trash on the ground or picking up a piece of trash someone else threw on the ground, so that our community is improved. That's one of the areas I'm still waking up to. We have some control. We can pick up stuff that we didn't toss, because it's the right thing to do to make our community better. Of course, it could be as simple as making time and taking better care of the things in our own homes, so that they last longer. They don't need to be tossed out like my pizza stone. We can take care of our world with kindness, generosity and respect for ourselves as well as for our community. 9:41 - “Favor of a Dance” by Marc Gunn with Vicky Swan & Jonny Dyer and Jamie Haeuser from Come Adventure With Me 12:37 - CLOSING I hope you enjoyed the song. “Favor of a Dance” will be on my next album, Come Adventure With Me. I released it on my last album. The song is about Malcolm Reynolds, played by Nathan Fillion, from the TV show Firefly. Throughout the 14 episodes of the show, he has this, let's call it a crush, on Inara Serra, the ship's companion, played by Morena Baccarin. But he has a lot of trouble telling her about how he feels. The sexual tension between the two is incredible. And of course it all comes to point in the episode “Heart of Gold” when we realize that Inara has just as many repressed feelings for Malcolm as he does for her. I for one have certainly suffered from an inability to adequately express my feelings. It's a common stereotype among men in particular. But I know there are a lot of people who have trouble expressing how they feel about someone. I still remember when I was in the second grade I had a crush on a girl. Someone recognized that crush. They vocally pointed it out on the school bus. I was so embarrassed. I pretty much stopped telling anyone when I was interested in anyone from that day forth. That's one of things I love about the song. It is relatable whether you enjoy Firefly or not. But the song makes so much more sense when you have seen the episodes. Throughout the lyrics, I relate a story of a guy who is interested in a woman. Each of the verses connect to episodes where Malcolm and Inara interact in the sexually tense scenes. The first verse talks about Inara's unknown past. It is often wondered what or if she was running from something. It alludes to Malcolm calling her a whore through a quickly changed rhyme scheme. The second verse was inspired by the episode “Shindig”. Malcolm attends a ball that Inara was hired to go to. He picks a fight with Inara‘s escort. With a little bit of luck, he wins the fight. The third verse talks about Inara, and how she relates to Malcolm. She teaches him how to use a sword. She gets angry at him when they don't go to “civilized” planets. And once again, the song alludes to her sexual career. It's the last verse though that makes me love this song so much. It's subtle. Again unless you really know Firefly you might not get the joke. The verse talks about finding her in a “down and out dirty place.” It revisits the idea that perhaps Inara is running from something. But then, in the final line, it's revealed that the whole song is actually about Malcolm‘s spaceship Serenity. Basically he is so sexually repressed that his great love, who is in fact Inara, is replaced with his other love, his spaceship. This song makes me so happy. I guess because it also gives me a little bit of hope. At least there are people who are even more oblivious than I am. 16:42 - “She's Shiny” from As Long As I'm Flyin' Pub Songs & Stories was produced by Marc Gunn. When times are tough, it’s easy to put aside what is good and what is right. It’s easy. But it’s also selfish. Far too often, we think about ourselves instead of what’s good for our community. I started the Celtic Music Magazine at the end of 2000. I was one of the few Celtic music marketers on the internet. I quickly built up a mailing list. Because I knew how to get subscribers. I created an incredible tool. And it was all mine. My goal was simple. I wanted to help my band the Brobdingnagian Bards be heard. I was focused. And I was selfish. It was all about me. We were not super successful. Then I started highlighting other bands that I enjoyed. The magazine exploded. The Bards fan base grew quicker too. It grew because I stopped thinking about myself. It grew because I realized my readers were not into just me. They were about Celtic music. They were about our Celtic community. I was just one of many fortunate people who helped the community flourish. But it wasn’t me. In 2005, I started the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I was frustrated that the Brobdingnagian Bards music wasn't being played on terrestrial radio programs, like Thistle & Shamrock. I wanted a radio show where MY music could be heard. I also learned my lesson from the Celtic Music Magazine. The podcast would not grow if it were just about me. Yeah. I had good music too. But this podcast was something more. It was about all of those Celtic musicians disenfranchised by terrestrial radio. On our podcast, I accepted all styles of Celtic music from the traditional to Celtic rock to every fusion in between. Again, it wasn’t about me. It still is not about me. It was about changing the way you hear Celtic music. It is about experiencing Celtic culture through music. What are the results? It’s the #1 podcast for Celtic music in the world. It gets more downloads than 95% of the podcasts in the world (That’s a stat from Libsyn). It’s won three Podcast Awards for Podsafe Music. And there’ve been over 21 million downloads of the show. 21 million!!! That’s not an exaggeration. One of the earliest marketing lessons I learned was if you help someone, if you do something outside of yourself, put yourself second or third or fourth, then you will see a return. So if I do something good for a community, like create a podcast or give away MP3s, I can expect that it will come back to me some way. I don’t know how it will happen. MYSTERY QUOTE FROM SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE And it’s really not important. That’s not what it’s about. What is important is that you do it. Trust that kindness will be rewarded with kindness. And it won’t always. But it is right. It is good to be kind and generous. Malcolm Reynolds knew that it would cost him dearly to return the medicine that they stole. But it was the right thing to do. Because good people needed it. Not everyone gets that. Trump covered up and then blamed others for the Covid-19 pandemic, instead of dealing with it. He thought only about himself. Now over 200,000 people have died. Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden saw Trump infected by the pandemic. He could’ve done what Trump did in 2016. He could’ve publicly laughed and humiliated him for his hypocrisy. Biden didn’t do that. He pulled all negative ads. He showed that he has class and a good character. He did what was good and right. He’s already bringing kindness back to the White House. He hasn’t even been elected yet. That is kindness and generosity. Times are tough. Friends and family are out of work, sick, and dying. So I want to dedicate my new single to all of those who are fighting with their conscience to do what is right. For me that includes voting for Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. 16:38 - SONG: “Tough Times” from Selcouth 20:32 - JOIN THE PUB CHAT (read and see videos at bottom of notes) Are you a Celtic Geek? While in the hospital with my mom last week (she had been there for 9 days)she was telling one of her nurses about this Little Guy my daughter listens to that sings those fun songs.” She was trying to tell her about the”Breathing” song. My mom (77) is struggling with stage 4 lung cancer. She is having a very difficult struggle with fluid building up around her lungs. I had to take her to the ER last Sunday and she was struggling to breath and her vitals were all over the place. She was scared and told me later she was singing the”Breathing” song in her head just to keep on breathing. She has claimed it for her motivation and you can find her humming it all the time."

What’s more fun than taking an ethical system from one world, and trying to find how our favorite characters from other worlds fit into it. In this episode we start with the ethical color pie from Magic the Gathering, in which we look at ethics not in terms of actions, but motivations and mind sets. We explain the system and then focus on other characters- even if you know nothing about MtG, if you like talking about how Tony Stark, Malcolm Reynolds, and Han Solo, all have similar ethical frameworks, this episode is for you! Rob McKenzie is a science fiction and fantasy reader and Magic the Gathering judge from Minnesota. He is passionate about interesting books, running great gaming events, and helping other people have fun with their passions. Meg Baum is a Level 3 MTG Judge and all around irredeemable nerd who loves stories, cooking, and adventures. She is the Judge Manager for Pastimes and moonlights occasionally as a Decontamination Technician at nuclear power plants. You can find her on Twitch/Twitter/Facebook/basically everything @mbgeekgirl As part of our conversation about Magic the Gathering, and our ongoing discussions of justice and how we can help, we want to tell you about a great fundraiser. #MagicArtChallenge is a charity fundraiser for Black Lives Matter and Black causes. Shepherd Book and Simon discuss the writings of a sadistic warrior poet, River and Kaylee chase each other through the ship, we learn that Jayne has purchased a crate of apples for the crew, which is uncharacteristically generous of him, and Mal and Inara have a terse discussion about a client of hers, a politician looking for discretion and privacy, and is coming aboard while they are on a planet selling some of their stolen medical goods. Mikey - Elsewhere, crime lord Adelei Niska is having another betrayer tortured, also alluding to Xiang Yu. An underling interrupts him to announce a nearby Firefly-class ship that might belong to Malcolm Reynolds. Wash learns that Mal rejected his plan to sell their stolen medical goods directly to doctors, rather than through middlemen, and they argue. Meanwhile, Book, Kaylee and Jayne get a glimpse of  Inara's arriving client, who turns out to be a woman, against the crew's expectations. Jayne utters the famous phrase, “I’ll be in my bunk.” Marc - Mal and Zoe learn that Wash changed the launch sequence on the shuttle so he could go with Mal while they make the drop. The tension between Wash and Zoe is obvious, and Mal eventually allows Wash to accompany him to make the exchange. Mikey - While Inara pampers her client, Wash, Mal, and their buyers are ambushed by Niska’s men. The buyers are all killed, Mal and Wash taken. Later, when Mal and Wash are late getting back, Zoe, Book, and Jayne head out to investigate, finding the bodies of the buyers and the merchandise left abandoned, with evidence pointing to an abduction by Niska. Marc - Mal and Wash are tortured by Niska as Zoe launches a plan to take the money they earned from their last heist to try and pay Niska off. This ploy doesn’t completely work, but Niska lets her leave with Wash and part of Mal’s ear. After Zoe and Wash reach the shuttle, Wash is resolved to rescue Mal. Mikey - The entire crew joins in on the attack, and eventually saves Mal, killing many of Niska’s men, but leaving Niska still alive. Simon reattaches Mal’s ear, and things go on, almost as usual, aboard Serenity.   NEW SONGS Marc: I am ever so grateful for the kindness and generosity of Gunn Runners over on Patreon. In the 'Verse, Firefly Song Crafting

The first 40 minutes of “Ariel” make this seem like the most generically, palatable episode of Firefly. It’s a fun but simple heist episode. Then comes the twist. The ending gives us a deeper look at what motivates and drives the characters of Malcolm Reynolds and Jayne. We talk about keelhauling a crew member and a touching way of asking for forgiveness after betraying the crew. Following an incident in which River attacks him, Jayne demands that she and Simon be left on Ariel. Mal quashes any talk of leaving people behind, but privately warns Simon that River has to be kept under control. Simon acknowledges that his sister is getting worse. Mikey - Simon approaches the crew with a job: he wants to get into the hospital in Ariel's capital city in order to scan River's brain with an advanced piece of medical equipment, and he needs the crew to get him inside. As payment, he will tell the crew how to steal valuable medical supplies undetected (they will be replaced automatically by hospital machines). Marc - Simon drugs himself and River so they appear dead, allowing the crew to enter Ariel city's hospital using a scrapped medical shuttle they refurbish and fake EMT IDs. The group then split up, with Jayne guarding Simon as he analyses River's condition while Mal and Zoe steal drugs from the hospital. However, Jayne betrays the Tams, placing a call to an Alliance officer who agrees to pay their bounty. Mikey - Once awakened, Simon dresses as a doctor and takes River to the diagnostic ward with Jayne. There, Simon discovers that River's brain has been surgically operated on many times, disabling her ability to suppress emotions. With the analysis complete, Jayne leads them to a rear entrance, where they are arrested by Federal marshals, Jayne included, the Alliance officer deciding to keep the reward money for himself. Meanwhile, Mal and Zoe return to the medical shuttle with the loot, but realize that Jayne and the Tams are late so head back into the hospital to find them. Marc - The three prisoners are moved to a holding area where Jayne and Simon overpower their escorts and escape. Shortly afterwards, two blue-gloved men arrive to take custody of the Tams, using a mysterious sonic device to kill all the marshals when the pair learn that some of them talked to the Tams. Meanwhile, a terrified River leads Jayne and Simon to a locked door, which is opened from the other side by Mal and Zoe, enabling the group to escape. Mikey - Inara returns to Serenity just as the medical shuttle arrives. Once everyone else has left the cargo area, Mal knocks Jayne out. Jayne awakens to find himself in an open airlock as the ship begins to leave the atmosphere. Jayne eventually confesses that he betrayed Simon and River, but denies double crossing Mal. Mal tells him that what he did was the same as betraying him. As Mal turns to leave, Jayne asks him not to tell his shipmates about the betrayal. Mal closes the outer door, sparing Jayne's life. Technically Religious
S1E3 - Being a "Light Unto the Nations" during a Sev1 Call

Technically Religious

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2019 22:54

Many religious traditions embrace the idea of being an example, a "light unto the nations". On this episode, Leon, Josh, and Roddie explore this idea for those of us who work in IT, when it's a highly stressful situation such as a system outage - the dreaded "sev1 call"? . Transcript: Josh:                                      00:00                     Welcome to technically religious where we talk about the interesting, frustrating and inspiring experiences we have as people with strongly held religious views working in corporate it. We're not here to preach or teach you our religion. We're here to explore ways we make our career as IT professionals mesh, or at least not conflict, with our religious life. This is technically religious. Leon:                                     00:24                     Look, we all know that working in it isn't all rainbows and ice cream and unicorns. There are frustrations, there are disappointments, and even times when the work is downright stressful Josh:                                      00:33                     and perhaps no time is more of that then during an outage when there's a lot of unwanted attention and tempers are running high. Roddie:                                00:41                     Today we want to explore the ways that we navigate those high stress moments as an IT pro with a strong ethical, moral, or religious perspective. Leon:                                     00:49                     To put it in scriptural terms. How might we use our perspective to be a light unto the nations in those moments? Um, this week we have a couple of new voices. So let's just do some quick introductions. I'm Leon Adato, Josh:                                      01:01                     I'm Josh Biggley Roddie:                                01:03                     and I'm Roddie Hasan. So diving right in. Leon, why don't you tell us where the quote comes from and kind of give us some context here. Okay. For those people who aren't familiar with it, um, it actually comes from one of the books of prophets, Isaiah, for those people who are quickly flipping through, it's chapter 42, verse six. Uh, and it, the whole context of the sentence is, "I am the Lord. I called you with righteousness and it will strengthen your hand and I formed you and I made you for a people's covenant for a light to the nations." So that's, that's what we're talking about. Um, but what does that mean, right? Roddie:                                01:39                     Like, yes, what, Leon:                                     01:41                     What, what's that supposed to be? Actually, before we dive into that, um, just, you know who, who among us has obviously, you know, prophets or Navi, uh, is a Jewish, you know, is part of the Jewish canon. So it's part of our context, but I do want to clarify that from a Jewish perspective, the prophets is not considered what we might call gospel. You know, thou shalt it's really considered a timeless political commentary. So, uh, you can derive life lessons from it, but it isn't a binding in the way that a commandment might be. So how about for you guys? Josh:                                      02:19                     It's interesting. So in Mormonism, um, and as we talked about last week, Mormonism being my, uh, my previous religious belief now identifying as post-Mormon and although, you know, having spent 40 years in the religion, I know a fair bit about it. Um, in Mormonism, Isaiah is feared, uh, only because, hey, it's Isaiah and he, you know, he uses some really complex imagery in order to extract his true meetings. Um, however this particular idea is also reflected in the New Testament. Um, so certainly I think Mormons and Mormons identifying as Christians this idea that we should stand up and use our correctness are... And certainly in context of Mormonism, are our absolute belief that they're, um, that that it is the true religion. Um, we use, you know, this idea of being a light unto the nations as, Hey, we've got, we've got all the truth. Everyone else has parts of it and they should look to, uh, you know, to Mormonism to fill in the blanks. Leon:                                     03:19                     Okay. We're going to leave that whole truth thing aside because it can get to be a very linux-y conversation. Um, but spinning right around it. Roddie, how about Islam? Roddie:                                03:27                     Um, so, so as you know, a couple of themes probably see come up in the podcasts as we go episode to episode: there, there are a lot of similarities between Islam and Judaism. So, um, you, you know, without pulling direct quotes out of the Koran, the Muslims do believe in the Old Testament. So, so a lot of the things that are in prophets would also apply to Islam. So, you know, they, they might be taught in different language obviously because it was written in a different language or read in a different language. But um, being the word of God, it's, it's kind of taken the same way. Leon:                                     03:57                     Okay. Josh:                                      03:58                     All right. Leon, that fast then, have you ever quoted scripture in a Sev 1? Speaker 2:                           04:05                     I uh, under my breath I might have used words that did include the word God. Roddie:                                04:10                     Yeah. But, um, I certainly take taking the Lord's name in vain many times. Leon:                                     04:16                     Yeah. Yeah. don't.. I don't think so. Now see, now I have an achievement unlocked thing to try to pursue, I guess. I don't know. Um, no, I, I'll, I'll go on record as saying I probably have never quoted Torah or any of the other, you know, other books during a Sev 1 as such, to say, well, as we see it, like, no, no, that's a bad idea. Um, I think it's worth putting on the table that, you know, do we think either for ourselves or for other people, they might take that, you know, being a light unto the nations means being better than, or, you know, quote unquote holier than thou during a Sev 1. Does that, is that what we're talking about? Roddie:                                04:56                     I kind of see it as a more positive message and maybe it's just kind of my worldview, right? So I don't see it necessarily as changing minds. It's improving or helping to improve the world. Not, not, I, it, again, that's just the context that I see it in. I don't see it as pushing or, or trying to make somebody something they're not, it's to brighten someone's Day. . Leon:                                     05:17                     Okay. Josh:                                      05:18                     Yeah. Yeah. And that's 100%, you know, regardless of what our religious backgrounds may or may not be perceived as by others, I don't think that anyone who is a good IT professional, a good team player is going to come into a Sev1 and look at chaos and say, all right, how can I Loki this? Uh, I just, I really want to drop in some, in some additional a chaos, right? Yeah. Leon:                                     05:44                     Okay. I wasn't sure. Loki was that l-o-w-k-e-y is that a function that didn't know about no, look. Do you mean Lok, Thor and Loki? Josh:                                      05:51                     Yeah, we're... Thor, of course. Right? We are, we are geeks. Leon:                                     05:55                     Yes. Roddie:                                05:55                     I was going to say it. There's the word Geek. We can get that in here now. Josh:                                      05:58                     Of course. Of course. Um, so I, you know, I, and I love that idea, Roddie. I'd love to that when we come into a Sev1 and there is chaos that, um, our light quote unquote, I that idea of coming in and saying, hey, whoa, whoa, Whoa, hold on everyone. Let's just slow down a little, you know, let's, let's divide this. We are engineer's after all. So let's split the problem in half and, you know, get down to the essence of it and then let's try to pull it apart. So often we get, we get pulled in different directions and we are looking for some, some central pill or some, some light to lead us to the right the right way. Leon:                                     06:32                     Okay. Um, I, I also see it as simply allowing our behavior to speak for itself, but not being a proscriptive, but rather just exemplary and saying, you know, in, in the middle of this very stressful situation, I'm simply going to continue to behave in a particular way. And hopefully by being calm, everyone else can remain and focused. Other people will find it easier to be calm and remain focused also. Not to even say to say to anybody, this is what we should be doing right now. Just to like, be it. Right? Josh:                                      07:09                     So, uh, so I'm, I'm curious then, do either of you, um, do you crack jokes are or make wise cracks during Sev1s? Roddie:                                07:16                     All the time. Josh:                                      07:17                     Okay, perfect. I will, I was afraid that I was the only one who made wise cracks during a Sev1 Roddie:                                07:22                     All the time. Leon:                                     07:22                     Yeah, so I will say my problem is that because humor is one of my main go tos for uh, De de escalating a situation that it can be too much. Right? You can and some people do not appreciate that when they feel the pressure is on, they want to focus. And again, like reading people, being aware of their moods and not trampling on it. Um, because I need a particular modality is also I think informed, uh, in a little bit, in some way by it. I don't know about you guys, Roddie:                                07:59                     so I just, again, it's, it's real easy to, and it's been a few years since I've been on a Sev1, they get very stressful and um, different groups tend to blame other groups and, and I just find that kind of bringing, bringing a little bit of humor and levity into the, in the conversation really kind of calms everybody down. And, and the, the benefit of that is when they're calm or, or at least when they're not angry, they're not, they're able to focus more and figure out what's going on. Right? It's not necessarily a matter of being the peacemaker, right? It's, it's we got to get this through and the only way we're going to get it through as if everybody's focused versus trying to blame everybody else. Right? Leon:                                     08:37                     Right. So I think, again, being an it pro in and using my religious view in a Sev1 situation at, one of the things that I particularly love about Judaism is that the focus is often not, did it happen? Did that dude build a big boat and try to put all the animals on it? Did the water really part? Like that's not really the focus. The focus is what did everybody do about what happened? So how did people react around it? And I, I think that the, the lesson that can be derived is that things happen. The system crashed. And if you are, uh, focused on what, but did it really happen? Like, if that's your mindset, looking and, and learning, uh, religious texts help you to say, but it, it doesn't matter if the world really flooded or the water is really parted or whatever. What did people do? A guy figured out that it was happening and he did everything he could to try to save as many people as he could. Like that's the focus. What did he do about it? And I think in a Sev1, it's like there are people who are in that Kubler Ross moment, like, you know, denial, anger, whatever. And instead say, look, the system is down. It is down. We don't need to, to get stuck on that. What are we going to do about this? And later on, what can we learn from it? I think that for me, at least, that's what it, how religion informs the Sev1 experience. Josh:                                      10:01                     Yeah. And that's, that's interesting because I come from a more academic approach to religion in a part of the dogma of Mormonism is a very structured, uh, religious, uh, study experience on it. I believe that that's the same for Judaism. But you know, correct me if I'm wrong, uh, and Roddie, you'll, you'll have to clue me in on, on, uh, you know, Muslims and their studies. You know, I remember from a very young age, you know, you get into high school and you go through four years of, of seminar, either early morning or, uh, you know, take home seminary. And then if you follow the traditional path, you end up as a, as a missionary for between 18 months and two years. And then when you go to college or university, there's four years of institute. And then there's structured learning every Sunday. Um, and then, you know, now there's a prescriptive guide. On what you should study. We are, uh, as a, as a face, we are pushed to ask why and everything is based on our, in our history, you know. Well, why did the, why did the early saints have to move from Missouri to Salt Lake? You know, why did Joseph Smith, why was he asking you a question about, you know, um, what's religions should I join? You know, why did he go into the grove to pray? And you know, why is it an important that he saw God and Jesus Christ and his vision, those things are, are very, uh, uh, very much a part of who Mormons are and how we view the world. And so I, I have to fight constantly with myself to not ask peopl, "well, tell me why that happened?" And it's sometimes it's not even in the context of a Sev1, but they always, I always feel the need to pull things apart. Uh, almost like I'm not destructive little child who looks at a, you know, something mechanical and goes, Oh, goody. Yeah. You know, I'm going to pull that apart just to see how all the parts, you know, where it fit together. And then sometimes I forget that if I'm going to pull it apart, I also have to be prepared to reconstruct it. Leon:                                     11:47                     To put it back together. Yes. Roddie:                                11:49                     So, so Josh, Josh and Leon, let me, let me ask this question to both y'all. So, so, uh, do you feel an, I'll put my atheist hat on for a second. Do you feel that you would still approach things? Sev1 calls in the same manner, even if you hadn't been, uh, I don't really know that the history of it or even if he hadn't been born into the religion are raised with a religion or like, do you feel like this is just part of who you are and your personality versus how you were raised? Josh:                                      12:21                     Well, first let me compliment you on the propeller on the top of your atheist hat it is very becoming, Leon:                                     12:28                     It's delightful. NERD! Yes. And proud of it. Roddie:                                12:32                     Word 2. We got the, that's our second word that we had to throw in there. Leon:                                     12:36                     We got it for, for people listening, we actually have a game of, um, you know, of Buzzword Bingo. We see if we can work these words in, in the thing. So that was 2, um, so, uh, so Josh, go ahead. Josh:                                      12:50                     I was going to say, I, you know, I don't know, uh, you know, part of my, my faith transition. So again, if you haven't listened to episode 2 go listen to it, I talk about a little bit about my faith transition. Oh, I'm having left the Mormon church in the past 12 months. I have no idea. I don't know who I would be without that construct. That's a great question Roddie. Leon:                                     13:10                     I can definitely tell you that this is nurture, not nature for me. I am extremely reactive, highly overly dramatic and emotional and uh, in a Sev1, in a, in a stress situation, my, I would be all over the map. I would be, you know, both frenetic and frantic and, uh, relatively ignorant of other people's emotional states. And I would just be running rough shod over everything and having, you know, having done some of the study work and some of the, you know, but wait, what's the question of the question and why was that the question and why, you know, look at analyzing it more has helped me to foster that more analytical approach and that more other-focused approach so that hopefully, and, uh, folks who've been on a Sev1 with me are welcome to write in, in the comments and say, yes, no, whatever. But I, hopefully I'm a better partner, a better team mate because of it. How about you Roddy? Roddie:                                14:11                     So, uh, I fall more on or on the, uh, on the nature side of that, that question. Right. So again, just looking at experiences in IT and the number of Sev1 calls I've been on, I've been on Sev1 calls with many other Muslims, right? I work in it. It's, you know, it's a global, global profession. Um, not everybody, uh, that I would say identify as Muslim just based on their name or where they're from, kinda approaches things the same way. I would, I think, again, this is just kind of a result of 15, 20 years of introspection. I think a lot for me at least, a lot of his nature is just how I am. Um, I, I do approach things analytically now. I wasn't so, so Islamism as structured as say, Mormonism is with the seminary in the higher education and, and uh, and the missions and all that kind of stuff. Right? So, so while I was raised Muslim, I don't know that it's shaped how I would approach a Sev1. Again, that's just speaking for myself. Leon:                                     15:08                     Interesting. All right. So I want to put a question out there because you, Roddie, you brought something up, which is that, you know, IT is a global profession. We, we interact with people all over the place. So there's an IT community, clearly an it culture that's out there and there's obviously a culture and a community with any faith-based, uh, ethically moral-based, a community also. So how does being part of, or having been part of a community of faith inform the way that you interact with the community in IT? Because I think that some people in it come at it without that sense of community. They're just like IT is where I work and it's a thing and that always causes me. "But wait, wait, wait. We're, we're more than just people who work together, aren't we?" You know, I keep on trying to build or, or tap into that thing. And for those people who aren't aware, I work at a company called SolarWinds. I'm not promoting the company at all. SolarWinds, however, has a forum. This is like 150,000 members. I'm called THWACK.com and that's a community. I mean, yes, we talk about, "hey, I can't install your software" or "Blah-blah was broken", but we also have people who jump on there and say, "I've never configured a router before. Can someone help me out?" Um, and SolarWinds doesn't sell routers. So it's, it's just a conversation. And we also have, you know, strong, passionate debates about religious things like "who is the greatest star ship captain of all time?", which is Mal of course if you were wondering, I mean, there is no other truth, I will claim that as the single truth. Is it Malcolm Reynolds is the greatest star ship captain. But um, so how about you folks? How do you approach community having been part of this, you know, faith based community? Josh:                                      16:54                     Then I think I, I follow in that same line, uh, Leon, I, I don't understand how you could approach IT as a profession without trying to build community. Um, you know, I get the idea of, you know, putting your headphones on and doing your solo work. I, I work from home. I've been doing it for five years now, but I am a social creature. I need to interact with people. I need to have. Um, I need to have others around me to not only emboldened me, but also sometimes to tether me a little because I, I can be a little, uh, I'll use the word frivolous. I'm a little flippant about my approach to things. So, you know, the, the idea that you could be a, an island in an ocean of IT is just obscure to me. Certainly a in foreign by the, the whole idea of, of a, of Mormonism. You know, the concepts within Mormonism is it, you not only go to church every Sunday, but there youth groups for the youth and the men get together. Um, the, you know, the women gets together, um, you know, there's Temple to go to there's all sorts of things that are intended to, to draw together. Um, the body of saints and in fact we're encouraged to, you know, meet together often. I think that IT, I just, I have no other way to approach it other than what's been informed by my religious upbringing. Leon:                                     18:13                     Okay. So Roddie is the, is the morning call to worship anything like that? Morning standup meeting? New Speaker:                    18:21                     So (pause, laughter)... Oh Leon... so we, uh, you know, I, it just kind of listening to what Josh just said, Eh, I'm wondering, and I'm coming back to nature and I'm going to keep coming back to it because I think a lot of how you approach it depends on your personality and we don't want to get into too big of an introvert versus extrovert personality discussion. But I think that's a lot of it, right? So, uh, in my case, I would call myself an extreme introvert. I can, I can get on a call with the two of you and be fine. If there were five or six people here, I probably wouldn't be saying a whole lot. Um, and I, it's the same when I'm on a call, when I'm in a meeting, when I'm, especially when I'm in person or presenting, right? There are things that have to do because it's what I get paid to do, but at the end of the day, I need to go shut, shut the door, sit in the dark for a few hours and kind of just to recharge. So, uh, I've always been that way. It doesn't matter whether it's work related or community related in inside of Islam or you know, at work. So, um, I, I get, uh, so I get the kind of need, uh, Leon or Josh that you have and Leon yourself as well. The, uh, the one, the one thing I appreciate about our industry uh, versus, um, so communities within our religions is the diversity, right? So I, and, and both you guys will probably recognize this when you are in your community, when you're in your religious community, you are kind of in a bubble, right? It's everybody's there for the same reason. Preaching the same things, preaching with a small P, um, talking about the same things, whether it's cultural, whether it's religious, uh, in IT, there's a lot more diversity, right? You're going to, it wouldn't have been hard for you to find four people with four religious backgrounds to do this podcast right there. It's a very diverse community. So not, you know, the primary, um, primary topic of every discussion isn't going to be around around religion. We kind of take it more towards, I know you mentioned starship, I haven't seen Lords of the Rings, so I don't really understand that reference, but it, you know, it's all, you're Leon:                                     20:30                     I hear a sudden disturbance in the force. It's thousands of Geeks are crying out in pain and agony. Roddie:                                20:36                     And what's something about her Maya or she's riding a broom to the Harry Potter land or something. I don't understand any of those references, Leon. Leon:                                     20:44                     Now you're just trolling the audience. Okay. Speaker 2:                           20:48                     I like it. Um, we're probably at about time, unfortunately. I think there's a lot more to talk about here. Um, but, uh, I think, you know, final, final thoughts. So, uh, religious, bringing your religious outlook to a Sev1. Are you pro or you con, are you neutral? Like how do you feel about it? Um, so this is lightening round, Josh, you go first Josh:                                      21:10                     100% a pro, you know, as much as I don't necessarily agree with the doctrines and dogmas of Mormonism anymore, I am extremely grateful for Mormonism teaching me how to not be an introvert. Uh, when you've got to knock on people's doors for two years and stop them on the side of the street and you know, talk to them on buses and streetcars and whatever about your religion, then that forces you to be a, to be more open. So I, you know, I think that taking my religious perspective, um, having that religious perspective put in check by those people around me and using it in a Sev1 to improve the situation 100%, I think it's made me a better person. Leon:                                     21:47                     Great. Roddie, how about you? Roddie:                                21:48                     So, uh, I would qualify, I would say a qualified pro, right? So using some of the more positive aspects of, of any of the teachings and the idea of peace and calm and bringing people together. 100%. Absolutely. Speaker 2:                           22:03                     So, and I'm, uh, I'm going to stay in the middle on this one personally, that I think that my, my religious outlook informs my behavior. So in one respect, I can't help but bring it because it's part of who I am. But in terms of purposely trying to think about leveraging something from my religious, uh, you know, tradition into a Sev1, I don't, I don't know that that comes naturally. It just informs who I am and therefore it's there. But I don't take it any further than that. Leon:                                     22:34                     Okay. So, uh, during a Sev one, regardless of your religion, Roddie:                                22:38                     It's never the network, Josh:                                      22:40                     uh, except when it is. I originally started playing music because I wanted to write songs that people loved. But finding inspiration or creating perspiration is tough! Welcome to Celtfather Music & Travel.  In the last podcast, I talked with Mikey Mason about our shared love of Firefly. I had a sort of secret agenda in talking with him. I thought it would be brilliant to create a Firefly podcast with Mikey as a means to promote our Blue Sun Holiday Spectacular Tour. Mikey is pretty practical though. I know I like to jump into projects pretty easy. But he needed a convincing reason. Mikey’s reason was, instead of just reviewing episodes like other podcasts have done, he came up with the idea of writing one new song for each episode of the series. I love this idea! It makes me think of my favorite song on my new Firefly CD, As Long As I’m Flyin’. That song is “She’s Shiny!” When I sing the song live, it has a great intro. It’s not just about Firefly. It’s a universal theme. It’s about men who have trouble talking to women. In this case, it’s about Malcolm Reynolds who has a crush on Inara but can’t or won't tell her. So much so that at the end of the song, Mal is saying the whole song is actually about his ship Serenity. What a great story idea! Yes. I throw in lots of references from the show. But when the average person listens, they hear a great rhythm and fun, easy-to-sing chorus. Yeah. They may miss the punchline at the end. But at live shows it has fairly universal appeal. I love it. This is what gets me excited about doing a Firefly podcast with Mikey. I want to write more songs like “She’s Shiny!” You see, the toughest thing about writing music is coming up with the song idea. That’s why I have long loved the nonsensical songs. They’re easy to write. But they're also not as an engaging. It’s fairly easy writing songs that have a story that actually happened to me. But to write an original song when you don’t have a thematic idea, it’s tough. Firefly is a great story. It has a great story arc. Each episode has its own story arc. Sometimes they have multiple themes. Just watching the first episode recently, I saw many, many different themes. The trick is to verbalize them. What about each episode or character or scene is so great. That’s why I want to chat with Mikey Mason about this. I want us to pinpoint those themes and write. And not just about Firefly either. Rather, I want the ideas. And I want to make them my own. I want to write powerful songs with universal themes, just like “She’s Shiny!”.  I think this experience will add to that. Someone recently recommended the podcast Harry Potter and the Sacred Text. I listened and loved it. It wasn’t just about Harry Potter. It was giving Harry Potter the religious text treatment. The idea is to look at Harry Potter and see how it could improve your life, looking at different themes. What a creative way to approach a book, or a tv show, or whatever! I think Firefly has a lot to offer today’s people. It’s about the average Joe struggling to make end’s meat. It’s not always smart. But it’s often right. As Shepherd Book used to say, “If you can’t do something’ smart, do something right.” The rich get richer. The rest of us are just trying to survive. To feed our families. To make it to the next paycheck so we can start all over. Maybe we’ll even move ahead. Now it’s possible I could do all of this on my own. I could sit down and start writing my own album without Mikey. But I admit what I love about this is having a songwriting workout partner like Mikey Mason. When Jayne is working out, he has Shepherd Book holding the weights for him, to push him to do more weights. It’s the same with me. Mikey is an inspiring partner. He’s writing a lot. He got an English degree in college. He’s the guy who looks for those underlying messages in shows. And admittedly, we brainstorm well together. That’s why I committed to the idea of doing this podcast and songwriting goal. But it’s not happening yet. We set another goal to get you involved...as patrons. I’m looking for 6 new people, who love my music, who want to see this succeed, and who won’t break their pocket books by pledging $10+ per month as my patron. In the Firefly episode Out of Gas, Malcolm Reynolds says, “No matter how far the long arm of the Alliance might get, we’ll just get ourselves a little further.”   This is The Celtfather, Marc Gunn. I’m going to share with you the story behind my song “The Long Arm”. It was the first single released for my new Firefly album, As Long As I’m Flyin’. The album came out on March 6, 2018. And the physical CD will no longer be available after March 31. So if you want that album, buy it in my Bandcamp store.   SHOW TIMES   0:30 Celtfather News 2:01 Intro toThe Long Arm  4:15 Verse One, Basic Human Rights 5:50 Verse Two, Environmentalism and Unification 8:22 Verse Three, Fake News, Lies, and Resistance 10:25 Chorus, Fighting Back Thru the Arts 12:05 Creating Change Through Politics 14:44 Congressional Dish Podcast Recommendation   NEWS   Before we get to that, I want to share some news.    My next CeltfatherLive internet concert is scheduled for Sunday, April 15, 2018. So I want to talk about it.    While it is set in the Firefly verse, it is a very political song. It is inspired by our current administration which I am not fond of. So if you are a fan of what’s happening in the White House, you probably don't want to listen to this episode.    Might I suggest instead that you check out the Canton Radio episode of Geek Pub Songs.    Alright, I'm hoping everyone who doesn't want to listen has logged off now.   ABOUT THE LONG ARM   When that line by Malcolm Reynolds is first spoken, it comes from a man who’s been beaten. Reynolds fought in one of the worst battles in the Unification War. The Battle of Serenity Valley saw some of the biggest loss of life of that war.    You can hear in his voice a man who had lost his faith in God, in justice and in humanity. He just wanted to hide away and avoid the encroaching “civilization” of the Alliance. He wanted to escape.    The Serenity movie turned that all around. He and the crew learned about one of the atrocities committed by the Alliance. He found faith in a cause bigger than himself. And once again he took up arms and won.    This song is about fighting for something bigger than oneself.    It was written at the very beginning of the Trump Administration. Trump was picking people to run various parts of the government with an obvious aim to dismantle the government. Most were corporate flunkies, people who wanted to decrease the size of the government and strengthen their own businesses. Liberals were up in arms and I believe rightfully so.    You see, one of the things Trump ran on was to run the government like a business. I used to be a fan of that idea. I remember watching the movie Dave. One of the lines that stuck with me is “if I ran my business like this, I would be out of business.”   I remember thinking, “right!”   Then I saw it in practice. A government cannot be run as a business. Because either you end up giving one business a monopoly or you stop thinking about what’s best for the people.    The for-profit business does what’s best for the business. That is not always what's best for its customers. The for-profit business focuses on what's best for its shareholders. Sometimes they coincide, but not always.   I am not a fan of big debts and deficits. America's is out of control. And the supposedly fiscally-conservative Congress is not doing anything to stop it. In fact, they're making it bigger, even while they attempt to dismantle the minuscule programs that actually help every day Americans like you and me.   It comes down to another lie by Trump. The Machiavellian idea of "the ends justify the means". He'll lie and support that lie even if he doesn't believe it, as long as he gets support for it.   I'm sort of jumping ahead of myself. So let's break down the lyrics.   The Long Arm is reaching for you Wants to wrest and take control It struck down your family   Now it's aimin' for your soul   The Long Arm is of course the Trump administration fighting to take away the basic human rights of Americans. It is trying to destroy everything that makes America beautiful and beloved by its people.   This might be an over-dramatization. But it makes the point.   It's grasp is filled with hate. It's fingers naught but fear White knuckled, it grips you Till your eyes fill with tears.   One of the things I've noticed most about the election of Trump is the hate. I'm not gonna point fingers at conservatives though. This is a universal thing. Conservatives are arguing that Liberals are hate-filled and Liberals are saying the same about Conservatives.   I think it's safe to say that this administration inspires hate. Trump is very polarizing. He bullies and belittles those who disagree with him. And he riles people up, both his supporters and those who despise him.   That's a narrative that liberals tried to warn about during the election. That's what all the claims of sexual misconduct were all about. Yes, Trump will never sue those women who claimed he abused them because he did, either physically or with emotional abuse. I have no doubt. He's the worst kind of person.   That's why I used the imagery of rape in this verse. I wanted the listener to get the feeling of being forced against your will to submit to Trump's will.   Alright, I'm gonna save the chorus for the last because admittedly, it takes a slightly different twist.   The Long Arm took our planet Down our throats, it done rammed The promise of unification But it left us all damned.   This second verse is mostly about environmentalism. However, it starts with another broken promise of Trump. Much like in Firefly, the Alliance promised unification. But that idea was only if it's under their rule.   Trump was the same. He promised to unite America and to work across the aisle. But he lied about that. Yes, Liberals were not willing to work with him. But he didn't even try. The great "negotiator" once again was not so great. Because all he cares about is himself and maybe his progeny. The rest of us are damned.   Laid waste to our landscape While its pockets grew fat Left us homeless and cold Now it's time we fight back   Now we get to the next prediction, that Trump would make it easier for corporations to destroy our environment for his own profit.   To that end, he removed a lot of bad regulations that Obama setup. And I say bad, because Obama did not get these passed as law. He used executive orders to protect our country because he couldn't get the Republican Congress to pass any laws to protect our country.   So let me talk a moment about regulations. I am not a fan of regulations. Or at least the idea of them. But this goes back to why for-profits should not run non-profit institutions.    Corporations are beholden to their shareholders. The most-important thing for investors is to make money. So if that means cutting costs or not doing stuff, like regulating your own company in the short-term so that your investors are happy, so be it.    Meaning, Corporations will not regulate themselves. And when it comes to convenience, consumers will not regulate corporations. That's one of the big pro-free market lies. The market will not regulate corporations if there's no immediate incentive.    So sure, when Conservatives finally see climate change as a real thing because our air quality, water quality and health diminish, THEN they will be fine with regulating corporations. But by then it's too late.   This goes back to Firefly too. "Earth's resources were all used up."   Why on Earth would any sensible person wait until THEN to protect our resources. It's stupid. Regulations are necessary to prevent profit over health.   Of course, who's making money while our environment goes to hell? Trump and his corporate cronies. Who's not? You and me.   The only way to protect true Americans is to defend the environment and to regulate corporations.   We're done running from the Long Arm Browncoats rise again We'll weaken your grip  And the stories you spin    As we start the final verse, I bring it back to the Independents. The Browncoats rising to fight for freedom and to fight against the "stories we spin" aka Fake News.    In the case of the Browncoats, it's the news spread over the Cortex by the Alliance. In our case, it's pretty much everything that Trump says and tweets. He is the #1 creator of Fake News in our country. Everything is Trump extremism.   I wish that "weaking your grip" was as easy as sharing the "facts". But as Ben Kenobi said in Empire Strikes Back.   Obi-Wan: "So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view." Luke: "A certain point of view?" Obi-Wan: "Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."   Yes. There are many facts that are easy to dispute. That's why Politifact has a scorecard for Trump that lists about 69% of his statements as Mostly False all the way down to Pants on Fire at 15%, higher than any other politician. Follow the link in the shownotes to see specific truths and lies.    Even though Trump is held accountable for every statement, if you're a true believer in him, you will blow off facts. That's a truth for any believer. Whether you're a fan of Trump or Obama or whatever you believe. If you are a believer, you will ignore facts.   This is especially true if he's keeping his big promises. And according to Politifact he's working on those. Even stupid ones like building a wall.   Like you done with all your lies That you packed in your fist But you ain't seen the truth yet Till you seen us resist   Of course, the final line calls for Browncoats and Americans to stand up and fight back, to Resist against tyranny.    We fight for freedom, freedom, For poetry and song We fight for actors and authors Painters and potters, Dancers and dreamers, Laborers and learners, It's them artists who make us strong.   I should point out that despite the resistance and calls for fighting for freedom, I am personally a pacifist. I believe in peaceful resistance. While this hearkens back to the Browncoats fighting for independence, I believe in fighting back through poetry and song, through the arts.   This actually makes a lot of sense, because the arts are often some of the first things attacked by conservative politicians as they rail on about fiscal responsibility while spending even more money elsewhere.   The arts are easy to overlook. But they are the best sign of a prosperous country. They're a sign of culture and humanity. The arts tell a story. Truth is revealed through that story. That's how humans grow. That's why we are no longer living in the dark ages. We live longer. We are more prosperous.    Even a small independent musician like me, I can make a living playing music thanks to the arts and the internet. I am able to tell this story.   And of course, I'm not alone. There's actors and authors, painters and potters, dancers and dreamers. Thank you Patty for coming up with the "dreamers". That line got new meaning because DACA, Differed Action for Child Arrivals, that was up in the air back in February.   And of course laborers and learners.   It's you who make us strong.   But it's not just the artists. It's each and every one of us who tries to make a living in this country. We're all struggling to be heard. We are all the heroes of our own Firefly episode. Each of us can make a difference. But we have to fight for a better world.   We can't just stand by idly and watch the world go to hell. We have to get to the polls and vote for people who stand for something better, people who will make a difference.    And I don't mean egotistical billionaires like Trump. I mean you or one of your friends.   Over the past year, I feel like I have finally learned how our government works. There's so much I didn't understand. But I read and learned.   Last December, Doug Jones won a senate seat here in Alabama. What I learned from that win and from everything last year is that our votes matter. Even a Democrat in Alabama can win a seat in a very Republican state if we vote, and if we find non-extremist people to run for office.   Republicans tried to brand Jones as an extremist liberal. But he's not. He's moderate who is now campaigning for bipartisanship, the very thing our Congress needs right now.   But how many others could step up and make a difference, in Congress or even at the state level. Or heck! How about the city level.   I saw a post on Facebook by a libertarian friend. He went to a school board meeting and was aghast. He ranted why couldn't the board do what was in the best interest of the students instead of trying to put money in their own pockets.   Of course, my friend Jamie and I rolled our eyes after reading that. Because the same could be said about your city hall, your state legislature, and definitely the Congress and Trump.    OpenSecrets.org publishes data on how each politician gets their money. Most are lobbied and owned by corporations. That's why the NRA has such a stranglehold on gun legislation. That's why Wall Street and banks were able to remove many of the regulations that were setup to prevent another recession like we had ten years ago. They own many of our politicians. And that's why the oil companies block the development of renewable energy resources.    But just imagine if you wanted to just do good for your city, state, or federal government. Just imagine if you weren't in it to get rich quick.    Well, the fact is you can do it. Anyone can get elected. Thanks to the internet, anyone can raise funding. All it takes is a passion and a willingness to make good change for our country.   That's ultimately what "The Long Arm" is about. It's about doing what's right for individuals. It's about standing against governments or corporations or anyone who tries to limit your freedoms. I pray to God that we never end up with a Unification War like on Firefly. "The Long Arm" is my small contribution to make sure that never happens.    Plus it’s just a gorgeous song inspired by an amazing tv show.    One final note. The president doesn’t make the laws. That job falls to Congress. But the news doesn’t report much about the laws that congress passes.    That’s why Jennifer Brinely started Congressional Dish. She reads the actual laws to see what’s in them and shares the facts. She also provides references in the shownotes. This is a great podcast if you want to find out what’s happening in our country beyond the headline.    I can’t say the show is unbiased. Brinely has very strong opinions. But I do think she does a good job at staying with the facts. She was very critical of Obama and is just as much of Trump. But more than anything she is critical of congress no matter what side they are on.    It’s an awesome show. You can subscribe for free at congressionaldish.com.    -   Thank you so much for listening. I know politics these days is very divisive. And I'm not gonna make a habit of doing political episodes. The Firefly episode "Jaynestown" is on my mind right now due to my long hours of podcast listening driving to and from GenCon. It has me thinking about how I can be a better musician and podcaster. As well as how to better reach my target audience.  It all stems from a quote at the end of "Jaynestown". Malcolm Reynolds tells the befuddled Jayne, "It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of him was one kind of a son of a b***h or another. Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need."  There's so much wisdom in that quote whether your a business trying to find your audience, a politician seeking re-election, or just someone wants to be a better person. I try my best to think about what you need and want. That's how I'm creating my newest Kickstarter. But it's also how I try to create everything I do, while still balancing it with my creative art.  It's not easy as you'll hear. -- You'll also hear my latest news: - Brobdingnagian Bards show scheduled is up at http://thebards.net/dragoncon/ - Friday, I have a Firefly Drinking Songs Show - Bards Hobbit Drinking Songs show on Sunday - Kilted Kings will have a Kickstarter for our new album online soon. - If you ordered Pirates vs. Dragons Deluxe Package, I will be mailing those out on Monday. - I was reviewed on Fandomania.com for Celtic Geek music. - New Celtfather podcast on Jaynestown - Voice actors wanted for Pirates vs. Dragons Podcast - Special guests at Johnnie MacCracken's this month is LandLock'd   If you enjoy this podcast, please LIKE and SHARE it. Even Mal Reynolds, captain of the Firefly-class transport ship Serenity and unrepentant atheist, and Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon and longtime Force-skeptic, would have to admit that this match was destined to happen eventually. Via a series of events that can most accurately be described as "wormholes for days," the two notorious smugglers-with-hearts-of-gold find themselves trapped in a strange galaxy that can be most accurately described as "far," and "possessing the qualities of a scape." Only one roguishly good-looking sci-fi sex icon can find the wormhole generator and escape, so Mal and Han are thrust into a space race that involves not just sailing through the black and/or navigating asteroid fields, but negotiating the criminal underworld and shooting anyone who gets in the way. Much like the characters they're representing, our advocates talk fast and bullshit faster, squeezing in as many lies per second as possible while desperately attempting to avoid the consequences of their actions in a contest that can be most accurately described as "fucking ridiculous." Between Colin's lecture on pitch, yaw, and roll, Miles' canon-maligning opening song, Kit's betrayal of R2-D2, Dan's obsession with Steve Miller, and returning special guest Brad Bultman's treatise on the concept of coolness...well, seems we got here just in the nick of time. The crew talked about Amazing Spider-man and the theories of the Mysterious Man in the credit scene. Naki and Trin discussed their love of Andrew Garfield's chocolate hair, and how Gwen Stacy is now an adorable kitten. Tell us what you thought of the flick! We then got into The Rumble Pit, Indiana Jones vs. Malcolm Reynolds. It was a long, tough discussion, bringing in some comments from our Facebook and Twitter pages...but you'll have to listen to see who won out in the end. Trin and Chris discussed the Mass Effect 3 DLC that was released, and if it was enough to pacify the enraged fans of the Mass Effect series. Adahy proved yet again that EA is a horrible company. We also announced some new segments we're adding into the show! The Vault will be classic gaming, both Tabletop and Console, and if you want to join Naki in one of her adventures with this and you're in the Chicagoland area let us know! We'll also be starting Question the Crew, where we take on your questions! Send them along, we love to hear from you! Our crew consists of Chris @RoundTableNews Naki @1nerdycupcake Adahy @TheAdahy Next week we have our first ever dual guest hosts of Jeremy Eden (@jeremyeden) and Dan Eden (@dan_eden) of EEK Theater Company! Our Rumble Pit will be a Battle of the Chosen Ones..Anakin Skywalker (before the suit) vs Harry Potter! Tell us what you think, and we'll see you next week! You can leave a message for the show by calling 304-806-ATGN.  Perfect place to leave your Rumble Pit feedback! The show notes for this week are available via Google Documents.
