Today, my guest is Susan Ball. Susan discloses to us how leaving the relationship which nearly killed her was her starting point. Susan now can help you find your new beginning also. Breaking away from an abusive relationship is the beginning of a difficult journey. Making the changes to rebuild your life will hurt. Susan had to do it, and she's now supported others to make those changes too - when you're ready to build a new life, do it with support. Why Does a Woman Stay in an Abusive Relationship? Why Did Susan Stay? Even when it hurts, a known place can feel like security. Starting as a child where, over the years, Susan attended 26 schools, building relationships seemed impossible. She felt unsupported and unable to find her own voice. This place of insecurity and loneliness became the place she believed she belonged. Maybe you felt trapped, like myself and Susan, believing there was no way out. Some of the barriers Susan faced in moving forward were admittedly at her own making; imagining a different future felt almost as impossible as achieving it. Other obstacles were physical and terrifying. Eventually, desperation made Susan leave, and courage brought her opportunities. In those moments when you can't envision your change - know that you're not alone. More of us out here have to do the same work you are doing internally. Breaking the Cycle Means Finding REAL Recovery After Abuse. Susan has been a coach for many years, but establishing her approach to REAL recovery took a long time. She is now about 10 years in the making and still going, just like we all have to keep going. Susan was determined not to be defined by her past and tried to push it away - until realizing that healing those wounds was necessary to create the better future she truly believed in. Having been through counseling, she still relived the nightmare -- frustrated and confused, it felt like she couldn't move on. Maybe you're listening today because you've tried other paths to recovery. You're not alone. Susan and I tried a lot of different things as well. Breaking the cycle in our own lives -- truly healing -- allowed us to experience the joy of a new life; sharing this learning can become our new goal. You, too, can embrace the adventure of a future without pain -- more than that, a joyful future. Take control with courage and grace. Honor Your Past -- Stay Grounded in Your Present -- Be Focused on Your Future. Find the people who will support you through it all, and don't let them go! They want to be there for you. WE want to be there for you. WE are here for you! Together, we can genuinely do more! Find out more about Susan on her website, recoveryafterabuse.ca. He swept her off her feet, even bought her a house with a big back yard for her two lovely daughters.  She believed she had fallen deeply in love with an ideal partner. On the first day of their honeymoon, he grabbed her hand, squeezed it very hard and said “Now that you are my wife, you will do as you’re told, how you’re told and when you’re told.”  The relationship deteriorated quickly.  A few months later she literally ran for her life. Susan Ball used her traumatic domestic abuse experience as the impetus for her transformation into coaching women who have experienced, or are experiencing, domestic abuse.  Her company is called Empowered Her.  She believes every woman can heal from domestic abuse. We see how disease evolves and what it says about our collective character. That’s the world that my Dr. Susan Ball writes about in  Voices in the Band: A Doctor, Her Patients, and How the Outlook on AIDS Care Changed from Doomed to HopefulMy conversation with Dr. Susan Ball:
