In this weeks episode, Han is joined by Bella Maki. Bella holds a weekly sibling support group, further to her sisters recovery from anorexia nervosa. Bella joins us today to discuss the impact of a sibling having an eating disorder, the support that is available, and how you as a sibling can help you loved one.We start by discussing the impact that her sister's diagnosis had on Bella, and how as the oldest child she took on the role of looking after her younger brother. We discuss the things that Bella's family did to ensure the eating disorder didn't become centralised in their family, how they made decisions so the eating disorder wasn't comfortable, and separated their loved one from the eating disorder. We also discuss how Bella found support for herself, what helped their family to remain as a unit, and the support that is now out there for siblings supporting a loved one. For more information, you can follow Bella at @bellamaki24 and you can contact her about joining her sibling support group if you are interested!Bella also suggested the following for sibling/family resources:https://www.feast-ed.orghttps://equip.healthBrave girl eating - Harriet Brown (book)

Harriet Brown's memoir Brave Girl Eating: A Family's Struggle With Anorexia is a must-read for anyone looking to better understand eating disorders after last week's episode “RINSE, REPEAT and Eating Disorders.” The book serves as a fitting companion to Domenica Feraud's Off-Broadway play Rinse, Repeat. Though the drama portrays a family's struggle with this disease, the main perspective is Rachel's. In our panel last episode, Domenica and expert Johanna Kandel shared personal experiences as people who have struggled with an eating disorder; Dr. Mae Lynn Reyes-Rodriguez offered the point of view of a researcher and clinician who specializes in eating disorders. In Brave Girl Eating, the perspective is that of a mother trying to help her daughter survive this mental illness. Hear more about the book and what you'll glean from reading it. In this episode, I am joined by Harriet Brown. Harriet has competed as a professional ironwoman for several years. Harriet talks about her start in lifesaving and all the other sports she participated in growing up. We delve into her incredible board race in Hawaii that is over 50km long! We also touch on experiences with injury and how it can challenge us mentally. Speaking to a sports psych really helped Harriet feel validated during those times. Harriet is also involved with one of my personal fav swimwear brands, Jolyn, and does Instagram live sessions. The topics that are covered in those are absolutely awesome so if you haven't checked those out yet, I highly recommend them! I had such a good chat with Harriet, and we explore some great topics and what she has learnt along the way. I hope you enjoy it! Bodies come in all shapes and sizes. But there are strong and powerful industries at work compelling us to believe we should all be working to achieve a narrow and arbitrary standard of smallness, thinly veiled by the banner of "health." Today we will talk about how genetics, rather than behavior, is the primary driver of body size and shape, about the forces that come together that make it so difficult to let go of trying to control our bodies, and about where to go from here. Beginning to unlearn the unhelpful things that disconnect us from our bodies doesn't magically result in us suddenly loving everything about our bodies, but it is a good first step. And even if our discomfort in our bodies persists, there are actions we can take to help us cultivate a posture and a practice of respecting our bodies.
