Derf Backderf - Kent State ShootingDerf Backderf, is an American cartoonist. He is most famous for his graphic novels, especially My Friend Dahmer, the international bestseller which won an Angoulême Prize, and earlier for his comic strip The City, which appeared in a number of alternative newspapers from 1990 to 2014. In 2006 Derf won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for cartooning. Backderf has been based in Cleveland, Ohio, for much of his career. On May 4, 1970, the Ohio National Guard gunned down unarmed college students protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University. In a deadly barrage of 67 shots, four students were killed and nine shot and wounded. It was the day America turned guns on its own children—a shocking event burned into our national memory. The fatal shootings triggered immediate and massive outrage on campuses around the country. More than four million students participated in organized walkouts at hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools, the largest student strike in the history of the United States at that time. It was a day that shocked the nation and helped turn the tide of public opinion against America's war in Vietnam.A few days prior, 10-year-old Derf Backderf saw those same guardsmen patrolling his nearby hometown, sent in by the governor to crush a trucker strike.Using the journalism skills he employed on My Friend Dahmer and Trashed, Backderf has conducted extensive interviews and research to explore the lives of these four young people and the events of those four days in May, when the country seemed on the brink of tearing apart. In this award-winning and powerful graphic novel, Derf Backderf takes us back to the age of the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon, Woodstock, and the Cold War and explores, in words and images, a scene of tragedy: the campus of Kent State University, where National Guard Troops attacked unarmed protestors and killed four students (Allison Beth Krause, age 19, Jeffrey Glenn Miller, age 20, Sandra Lee Scheuer, age 20, and William Knox Schroeder, age 19).Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

The graphic novel that inspired the critically acclaimed, bone-chilling major motion picture starring Ross Lynch as Jeffrey DahmerNational bestseller! An ALA/YALSA Alex Award WinnerAngoulême Revelation Award WinnerNamed a “Book of the Year” by Time, The Village Voice, A.V. Club, comiXology, Boing Boing, Publishers Weekly, MTV Geek, and more! You only think you know this story. But the truth is more shocking and disturbing than any fiction. In 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer—the most notorious serial killer since Jack the Ripper—seared himself into the American consciousness. To the public, Dahmer was a monster who committed unthinkable atrocities. To Derf Backderf, “Jeff” was a much more complex figure: a high school friend with whom he had shared classrooms, hallways, and car rides. In My Friend Dahmer, a haunting and original graphic novel, writer-artist Backderf creates a surprisingly sympathetic portrait of a disturbed young man struggling against the morbid urges emanating from the deep recesses of his psyche—a shy kid, a teenage alcoholic, and a goofball who never quite fit in with his classmates.“To you Dahmer was a depraved fiend but to me he was a kid I sat next to in study hall and hung out with in the band room,” writes Backderf, whose text and images go on to show how Jeffrey Dahmer moved from fascination with roadkill and torture of animals to high-school alcoholism to mass murder. He also shows how he was shaken by his parents' stormy divorce, by his troubled mother's decision to move and leave her son alone, and by the encouragement of the Jeffrey Dahmer Fan Club (with the author as a member) to turn the outcast into a dangerous killer. With profound insight, what emerges is a Jeffrey Dahmer whom few ever really knew, and one whom readers will never forget. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

This week is a real treat, no tricks! We welcome back to the podcast director, Marc Meyers to discuss his horror film, "We Summon the Darkness" from 2019. This is horror imbued with humor - the best kind in our humble opinion. And with all sorts of movies and documentaries about Jeffrey Dahmer having a moment, we decided to also talk to Marc about his film, "My Friend Dahmer" which is the only film that can claim to have actually shot in Jeffrey Dahmer's childhood home. That is spooky in and of itself. This is a real peek behind the curtain of movie making. We've got questions and Marc is answering all of them. So if you've been sick of hearing just Anne and Crissy blather on for the last few months, then this is the episode for you. We only blather for half the time while Marc takes the spotlight. This is a good one! crissy & anne --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/crissy-shropshire/message

Working from home, Jamie Kirkpatrick edited a solid, tight Western script that was proposed to him as “a Wal-Mart movie,” only to realize from the dailies that it was actually turning into a great movie. Months later, after successful reviews from the Venice Film Festival, writer-director Potsy Ponciroli's Western is in theaters and one of the year's best movies. In particular, one of the influences for the movie discussed between editor and director was Kevin Costner's underrated, last directorial outing, Open Range, and in particular its messy gunfight finale. On this episode, joined by Ted Haycraft, we discuss:- The wide list of Westerns Kirkpatrick studied while editing, from Blazing Saddles to Pale Rider;- two editors shop talk, particularly about editing a film remotely frame-by-frame on software that lags significantly;- then they talk shop more, particularly about Kirkpatrick's short editing schedule for Old Henry;- and then, somehow, they talk more editorial shop.Also:- Kevin Costner's tiny directorial trilogy of lengthy, cinematically-informed films, which talk back to film history;- why certain perfectly-great film's Oscar success hurts them in posterity, when they won over other beloved films (Dances With Wolves v. GoodFellas);- how many bullets are actually in a movie six-shooter, at least from an editor's standpoint;- and also: more editors' shop talk.Jamie Kirkpatrick is a New York-based editor and filmmaker. His feature editing credits include Dave Chappelle's Block Party, Ed Burns' The Groomsmen, My Friend Dahmer, We Summon the Darkness, and Critical Thinking.Open Range is available digitally to rent or buy.Old Henry is currently playing in select theaters.

Cults have been portrayed many times in horror films as the final antagonist. These movies include the comedic SATANIC PANIC (2019) or darker films such as 1BR (2020) or THE INVITATION (2015). And many do follow similar themes and plot developments. Some change it up a bit such as THE SACREMENT (2013) using found footage, and the new horror film WE SUMMON THE DARKNESS (2020) actually even changes up the protagonists. It's 1988, and three girls head to a heavy metal concert. When they arrive in the parking lot, they meet up with three boys who seem to want to “party” with them after the show. Unfortunately, a string of kidnappings by Satanists have occurred around the area.
