I'll take unlikely pitchers to strike out Shohei Ohtani for 200 please. We let Sally Jenkins and Jake Mintz take the lead on the “permanent ends when you're dead” rant re Pete and the other formerly permanently ineligibles. Will Andy Pages be the player that gets Pottymouth to manage her fantasy team more closely? Maybe! Patti's team is again short a 3rd baseman but the math is working out. PCA's newest stats are rivaling those of the new Pope for Chicago-based excitement. We thought the BOS gag was going to be Who's On First but it turned out to be who is in the outfield because the new City Connects are Fenway camo for the guys near the wall. Kudos to the second place finisher in a Maine high school track event for calling out Rep. Laurel Libby as a bully for “maligning” the trans-identified athlete who won the event. And we crosstrain with ornithology because even after Brandon Hyde got fired only one kind of oriole is fun to watch right now.We say, “I wanna piggyback on the joy,” “who wouldn't want to swing a rainbow banner?” and “I hate it when drag queens make me cry.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Comedy Teams have a long history in the world of entertainment, beginning in British music halls, and then in vaudeville in America. They were also popular during the golden age of radio. Among the many comedy teams on the air at the start of commercial broadcasting were George Burns and his wife Gracie Allen. They got married in Cleveland, Ohio in 1926 and never looked back, performing in early talking movies, and getting a network radio show in 1930s, which would last until 1950 when the couple took their act to  television. We have a Burns & Allen radio show from 1938. Another one of the biggest double acts on radio were Abbott & Costello. Best known for their "Who's On First" baseball routine. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were popular burlesque theater comedians, and got their own radio show in 1940. They also made it big in movies. You will hear one of their radio shows from 1943. Abbott and Costello's popularity began to decline when nite club performers Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis were given a radio show in 1949. It wasn't exactly a hit, but the pair became superstars in movies, and on television. you will hear a Martin & Lewis radio show from 1949. More at KRobCollection.com

In the early days of Saber Guild, around 2010-12, what eventually became known as Saber Guild Temple Prime (local and founding chapter in southern California) used to have a pre-show before their regular performances, a STAR WARS version of the Abbot and Costello classic comedy routine "Who's On First." It's purpose was to get the audience laughing and settled in for the choreographed lightsaber performance that awaited them later on. That pre-show STAR WARS comedy routine was called "Who's on Tatooine." I do not know of any surving quality audio recordings of "Who's on Tatooine." However, Stephen (SG-008) and I (SG-016) recorded our own version of that routine at around that same time period, using the same script. The first half of this podcast is that recording, now a decade and a half old. I decided to publish that routine again here, as it is hilarious and nostalgic for those of us that were a part of those good old days in the STAR WARS fan community. Following "Who's on Tatooine" is a replay of "Who's the First Ensign," which as you might guess is our STAR TREK version of that skit. We hope you enjoy it! - Commander Joe

Marshall Goldsmith said it first and best, "what got you here won't get you there." This premise works virtually in every aspect of life, yet in business and sports, it is remarkably accurate. Competitors (and rivals) constantly look for weaknesses in our game to exploit, take advantage of, and outperform us. Even when we are winning, we must take a moment to reflect on what can be improved. So, what can we learn from the 49ers' comeback against the Lions last week? Today, on another NFL-related episode, I'm joined by Jason Patel and Geoff Berman to analyze the Lions' meltdown at the NFC Championship against the 49ers and what we can learn from it and incorporate it into our auto repair shop's strategy. Geoff and Jason are Performance Coaches at ATI, proud owners of innovative thinking, and two of the most inspiring and compelling thought leaders in the automotive industry. Throughout this episode, you'll hear about the importance of being adaptable and innovative as a leader, understanding the consequences of your actions, and working constantly to strengthen your auto shop's weaknesses just as much as you know your competitors' weaknesses. You'll also hear Jason and Geoff's thoughts on how to build positive leadership in rough times, why you must take a step forward and recognize your failures, how to motivate your technicians, and more.In This Episode, You Will Learn: What did the Lions' meltdown teach us about growth strategies (4:20)Why adaptability is essential (9:00)The importance of being aware of our auto shop's weaknesses (13:20)What can you do to fail less next time? 210 - Abbott and Costello Discussion with expert Ron Palumbo, plus special guest Beverly Washburn This is an interview episode, where Steven is joined by Ron Palumbo to discuss Abbott and Costello!  We are also extremely lucky to have a guest appearance by Beverly Washburn at the end of this episode to share her memories of working with Lou Costello on Wagon Train. Ron Palumbo is the foremost authority on the careers of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, and a valued consultant to the Abbott and Costello estates. With the encouragement and approval of the families, Ron founded the Official Abbott and Costello Fan Club in 1986 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bud and Lou teaming up in burlesque. The fan club is still active and publishes an online magazine.Palumbo co-authored (with Bob Furmanek) “Abbott and Costello in Hollywood,” the definitive guide to every one of the team's 36 films. Leonard Maltin said that it had “more details on the making of their films than any book I've ever seen.”He is also the author of “Buck Privates: The Original Screenplay” and “Hold That Ghost: The Original Screenplay,” which meticulously document the making of two of Abbott and Costello's best-loved films and include the shooting scripts. He has a third book in this series on “One Night in the Tropics,” the team's film debut, coming out early in 2024.The Library of Congress has called on Ron to write essays on the boys' signature routine, “Who's On First?” and their most popular film, “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.”He has also written the liner notes for the definitive boxed sets of the team's films and television series and provided acclaimed commentary tracks for their films and episodes of their classic TV series.Ron has appeared in “A&E Biography Meets Abbott and Costello” the “Today” show, the documentary “Abbott and Costello Meet the Monsters,” as well as countless radio shows and podcasts. He is an advertising creative director who has won every industry award...but regrets that he has never had the opportunity to use clips of Bud and Lou in a commercial. We hope that you enjoyed that episode!  We would like to thank Mr. Palumbo and Beverly Washburn again for joining us!  We again recommend both seasons of the Abbott and Costello TV show and their Jack and the Beanstalk movie!  We also suggest getting Ron's books too! Topics: (PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 33-minutes discussing the Christian-Marketed Movie Complex (CMMC, as coined by Melvin Benson) and positive ways in which it could be improved, rather than dogging on it as people are prone to do. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)The verdict of a Party Pleaser can be for any reason, but Melvin thought it would be interesting to think about whether Fireproof would be edifying to watch with friends or not. You know, because it's a Christian-Marketed film.Melanie and Melvin agree: the movie starts very poorly. It's not much of a tone-setter for the rest of the film, and they each propose alternative ways for the film to open.Fireproof doesn't have successful comedy, and it's drama is oddly voyeuristic which makes for a very awkward film.Fireproof is just shy of 2 hours. To make it more palatable, it could have easily been trimmed.Occasionally Fireproof has some semi-well constructed sequences. They're very much in the "almost there" category. The first half of Fireproof showcases the result of marital dysfunction in Caleb, and the second half labors to show that equal-yet-opposite result in Kathryn.Upon reflection, Fireproof seems structurally sound, but the execution leaves itself wanting.Recommendations: Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds by Jen Wilkin (Book)Abbott & Costello's Who's On First? After, Nick recommends a dark comedy written and directed by Alex Winter (“Bill” of Bill & Ted fame) called Freaked. The cast includes Randy Quaid as a freak show owner and Bobcat Goldthwaite as an anthropomorphic sock monster. __________ Taylor Zaccario…Host, Director, Producer, Writer Nick Zaccario…Host, Director, Producer, Editor

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

This week we serve up a "changeup" and focus on a legendary comedy routine instead of a comedian. And with the World Series going on, what better choice than Bud Abbott and Lou Costello's classic wordplay routine "Who's on First?" Bud and Lou borrowed the basic concept from a number of wordplay routines making the vaudeville circuit, but their all-American spin using a baseball team as the focus made it an instant hit. It also was a masterclass in slow burn comedy, with Lou becoming more and more frustrated until he explodes. As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Who's On First? Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy Bud and Lou first performed the routine to a wide audience on the Kate Smith Radio Hour in 1938. This clip is taken from a later appearance on the show, but it's a fun listen as the boys have fully inhabited their characters. https://youtu.be/Y91PmP9AXbI   There are a number of video versions of the routine available, but this version -- taken from their early 1950s tv show -- is among the very best. https://youtu.be/2ve20PVNZ18   All great comedy inspires great comedy homages and this one by the Credibility Gap is a gem. Instead of baseball we have a rock concert, but the bit translates perfectly. https://youtu.be/ludCVowT-DE
