The Freddy Adu story is well known in the world of American soccer. It is one of promise and then unmet opportunity. But, in the end, one of the most important elements of the Freddy Adu story is how he brought so many people to the game of soccer in the United States. His youthful exuberance, his talent and his charisma were all the stuff of marketing fuel. And, as Adu's rose to prominence through the US Youth National Teams and then MLS, the marketing machine thrust him into the spotlight. Thomas Rongen, known for his stint coaching American Samoa that became the move "Next Goal Wins," coached Adu on the U20 National Team and saw his talent immediately. He also grew to care for Adu personally, and saw the challenges the young prodigy faced as he transitioned into the professional ranks. However, Rongen still witnessed first hand how big Adu's impact was on growing soccer in the US. He joined Founding Futbol to talk about it. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. On this episode, I spoke to cinematographer Lachlan Milne about his work on Lady in the Lake. Lachlan Milne is an award-winning director of photography, whose work ranges from Academy Award winning dramas to global smash TV series. Milne's work on the acclaimed 2021 film Minari saw him nominated for a Critics Choice Award, Online Film & Television Association Award, and CinEuphoria Award among others. He has twice been awarded by the New Zealand Cinematographers Society for Minari and Love And Monsters. Milne's other film credits include Hunt For The Wilderpeople and Next Goal Wins, both for Academy Award winner Taika Waititi. MORE ABOUT LADY IN THE LAKE: When the disappearance of a young girl grips the city of Baltimore on Thanksgiving 1966, the lives of two women converge on a fatal collision course. Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman) is a Jewish housewife seeking to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as a journalist, and Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram) is a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family. Their disparate lives seem parallel at first, but when Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo's mystifying death, a chasm opens that puts everyone around them in danger. From visionary director Alma Har'el, Lady in the Lake emerges as a feverish noir thriller and an unexpected tale of the price women pay for their dreams.

"Fa'afafine is such a part of our culture we don't feel the need to explain it. It's a coming of age story as opposed to a 'coming out' story others in the rainbow community have."These are the words of Jaiyah Saelua as she details what it means to be fa'afafine and the first ever transgender athlete to play in a World Cup Qualifying match back in 2011 for American Samoa. Though, Thomas Rongen received all the headlines when he lead that American Samoa team to their 2-1 WCQ victory over Tonga, there was another story developing at the same time. Though it was covered in the 2014 documentary 'Next Goal Wins', it's featured much more prominently in the 2023 film based on the documentary of the same name and it's brought Jaiyah back into the discussion. In this episode of the podcast, Jaiyah shares her perspective of that 2011 win, her fa'afafine identity, and how we can continue to unite people through football.Enjoy!*Humans United FC is proudly brought to you by Hayworth Athletic*Humans United FC is a multimedia storytelling brand committed to sharing the human experience through the lens of sport. This week on Nerd's Talking The Podcast, get ready for a thought-provoking episode! We kick things off with a review of "Next Goal Wins," directed by Taika Waititi, which tells the remarkable story of the American Samoa soccer team's journey to redemption after suffering the worst loss in World Cup history. With the 2014 World Cup on the horizon, the team recruits maverick coach Thomas Rongen, portrayed by Michael Fassbender, to help turn their fortunes around. ext, we delve into the highly anticipated Netflix series "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Set in a war-torn world inspired by Asian cultures, the series follows Aang, the Avatar and the only one capable of bending all four elements. Aang, along with his new friends Katara and Sokka, embarks on a quest to master the elements and bring peace to the world, all while being pursued by the exiled Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation, who seeks to capture him to regain his honor. Then, Lafayette gives us a quick review of "Mean Girls," a modern classic comedy from the creative mind of Tina Fey. The film follows new student Cady Heron as she navigates the treacherous social hierarchy of high school, particularly the elite group of popular girls known as "The Plastics," led by Regina George. As Cady becomes entangled in Regina's world, she must learn to stay true to herself with the help of her outcast friends Janis and Damian. This soccer comedy was written and directed by Taika Waititi, and is based on a true story of the American Samoa national team that lost 31-0 in a World Cup qualifying match. The final Empire Podcast of 2023 is here, folks, and it's a belter, with two incredible guests. First up, Michael Fassbender returns to the pod after an absence of a few years, and in an extended interview with Chris Hewitt, he talks about returning to the big screen with the double-whammy of David Fincher's The Killer and Taika Waititi's Next Goal Wins. Plus, he talks about going to Anfield, home of Liverpool Football Club, for that game against Barcelona in 2019, shares his love of The Streets Of San Francisco, and confesses that he may not actually be telling the truth in interviews. It's a very fun chat that starts at 20:11, and ends at 42:09. Then, Alex Godfrey has a nice natter with Adam Driver, star of Michael Mann's Ferrari, about driving, about whether he's happy, and about possibly taking on the De Niro role in Heat 2. That starts at 56:33, and ends at 1:13:08. Either side of those, Chris is joined in the virtual podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer and, despite the apparent absence of stuff to talk about in the Merryneum between Christmas and New Year's Day, they manage it, sharing their New Year's filmic resolutions, ranking The Hollywood Chrises (but in a most unexpected way), discussing the week's movie news including the shock omission of Wonka from the shortlist for Best Original Song at the Oscars, and review Next Goal Wins, Ferrari, and Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy And The Heron. Thanks so much to everyone who listened this year, whether it was to one pod or all we produced. We couldn't do it without you. Here's to a great 2024. Happy New Year, everyone, and enjoy.

We have just five shows left in 2023, counting this one. It's almost Thanksgiving. And it's almost crunch time. This week, we have two Netflix movies and a soccer comedy. First, it's Todd Haynes' psychological drama (among other things) "May December." Then it's the Obamas-produced historical biopic "Rustin." Those are the Netflix movies. Then we have Taiki Waititi's Michael Fassbender soccer comedy "Next Goal Wins." Getting close! Timestamps: 9:45: "May December" 38:55 "Rustin" 1:00:11 "Next Goal Wins" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@gmail.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast.

Leslie Jones asks New Yorkers to dig down deep and say nice things about Ron DeSantis, Putin, Marjorie Taylor Greene and more. And actor and Oscar-winning filmmaker, Taika Waititi, joins Leslie Jones to discuss the true story behind his new film “Next Goal Wins,” the inclusivity of the characters on his show “Our Flag Means Death,” and Taika confirms: he knows how good he looks.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
