#189 The Marvels, The Killer, When Evil Lurks What would happen to society if the very essence of Evil became contagious? When Evil Lurks hunts down this notion in small but important areas of the Argentinian landscape, where no one is safe. Especially children and animals. What happens when an assassin botches a hit? The Killer explores this question as a retaliation from this near-miss jumpstarts another series of retaliatory strikes. How can you bring power down an immortal hero? The Marvels answers this question with comedic timing and situations as the next chapter of this space-traveling trio of Marvels find answers and inspiration in each other. New Zealand's Taika Waititi is prolific if nothing else. As an actor, he's played roles from an endearing vampire in “What We Do in the Shadows,” to Adolf Hitler in his film “Jojo Rabbit.” Taika's new film, “Next Goal Wins,” takes you to American Samoa and the attempt to turn the worst team in soccer around. Tom talks to Taika about what drew him to this “underdog” story, why he finds humour in the mundane, and why he thinks New Zealand humour translates across the world. Plus, the Nova Scotia rapper Kayo tells the story behind a new song off his EP “Trip.”

Join us this week as our hosts J and Z take a trip back down teen dystopian fiction lane with the prequel film to the "The Hunger Games" series, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" (0:00:00). Other topics include a Trailer Trash/Trailer Cash for "Madam Web" (1:04:58), the latest Taika Waititi film "Next Goal Wins" (1:26:28), and the third episode of Amazon's "Invincible" (1:46:31).
While there have certainly been a litany of sports movies over the years, an alarmingly few of them have been focused on soccer. With some exceptions, Hollywood has largely ignored the beautiful game and world's most popular sport. However, 'Next Goal Wins,' directed by Taika Waititi, made its theatrical release last week, and that got us thinking, what are some of our favorite films centered around soccer? In addition, the UP Podcast crew discusses the footy-inspired NBA in-season tournament and what other elements from soccer the league can implement, a look ahead to the MLS Cup Playoffs, and more controversy surrounding Megan Rapinoe. Editor - Tom Eagles ACE NEXT GOAL WINS editor Tom Eagles ACE first made a name for himself with his ACE Eddie-winning work on JOJO RABBIT (2019). That film would also get Tom an Oscar® nomination for Best Film Editing. With NEXT GOAL WINS, Eagles once again is found in the cutting room of a Taika Waititi film. Tom joined editors Nat Sanders ACE, Nick Monsour and Yana Gorskaya ACE for the "sports comedy with a heart". Based on the 2014 documentary of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, NEXT GOAL WINS is about Dutch American coach, Thomas Rongen's efforts to lead the American Samoa national football team, considered one of the weakest football teams in the world, to qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The storyline also includes fa'afafine player Jaiyah Saelua, who was the first transgender player ever to compete in a World Cup game. TOM EAGLES ACE Back in his home country of New Zealand, Tom Eagles built his career on a foundation of work with director Taika Waititi; including films such as WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (2014), HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (2016), the TV series WELLINGTON PARANORMAL (2018) and their critically acclaimed film, JOJO RABBIT (2019). Looking to expand his career and broaden the scope of the work he could choose from, Tom moved his family from New Zealand to Los Angeles. Aside from his work with Waititi, Eagles has also worked with director Jeymes "The Bullitts" Samuel on his first feature, THEY HARDER THEY FALL (2022), and their upcoming effort, THE BOOK OF CLARENCE (2024). Chances are you've got a lot on your plate (metaphorically speaking) this week and you don't have time to figure out what to watch after the big meal is over. Luckily we've predigested all sorts of entertainment options for you. We start with a big one - "Napoleon" Ridley Scott's epic that details the checkered rise and fall of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine.Joaquin Phoenix has the title role. All three of us saw it and we all kind of agreed on it. Then there's "May December" which takes place twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, as a married couple buckles under pressure when an actress arrives to do research for a film about their past. It''s got Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in it. Bill McCuddy tells us what he thought of David Fincher's Netflix movie "The Killer" which stars Michael fassbender as an assassin. Neil Rosen fills us in on the new miniseiries "Lessons in Chemistry" starring Brie Larson, and he also talks about the documentary "Albert Brooks: Defending My Life" which is about, you guessed it, Albert Brooks. And Bill Bregoli gives us the skinny on Taika Waititi's sports comedy "Next Goal Wins." Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of November 17, 2023. The Trolls are back together as Justin Timberlake leads an N*Sync reunion in digital animated form in “Trolls Band Together.” But fighting for box office dominance is also the “Hunger Games” prequel movie, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." Also on the big screen is "Next Goal Wins," where Taika Waititi hilariously tells the story of the 2011 American Samoa national soccer team who just wanted to score a goal in a World Cup qualifier. And Horror fans have "Thanksgiving" from director Eli Roth, featuring some over-the-top gore from a guy dressed in a pilgrim costume as he terrorizes Plymouth, MA. Steaming has lots of choices this weekend, including an animated series on Netflix that is the sequel/reboot/continuation of the story started in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" called "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off," which brings back the entire voice cast from the 2010 movie. SNL fans may get a kick out of the Please Don't Destroy guys in their movie on Peacock TV, "The Treasure of Foggy Mountain." Disney Plus’s "Dashing Through The Snow" sees Ludacris and his 8-year-old daughter trying to help Lil Rel Howrey's Nick recover a lost iPad on Christmas Eve. And Netflix’s "Best. Christmas. EVER!" has Heather Graham and hubby Jason Biggs take their two children to college friend Brandy's house, partly to prove that Brandy's life can't be nearly as great as her yearly Christmas letter makes it seem. Extra fun: It was filmed and set here in Utah! Beyond Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Gaming, and Tech, the brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing the nerdy.
