In this week's episode of 'God on the Move', Nouh Ag Infa Yattara shares his incredible journey from a nomadic Tuareg upbringing in Mali to becoming a Christian pastor. Nouh recounts his early years, the allure of a simple ballpen that led him to explore Christianity, and the persecution he faced from his family and community after his conversion. As pastor of the Evangelical Baptist Church of Timbuktu and General Delegate for the Evangelical Protestants in Mali, he highlights a ‘Macedonian Call' for help, revealing the critical challenges faced by Christians in Mali due to lack of financial and missionary support. This episode emphasizes the power of faith, the importance of prayer, and the ongoing need for support in the spread of the Gospel in one of the toughest regions for Christianity.   Links from the interview Voice of the Martyrs She is Safe Compassion   Nouh Ag Infa Yattara Nouh Ag Infa Yattara, born December 1, 1953, is a Malian pastor and evangelist serving as the Pastor of the Evangelical Baptist Church in Timbuktu and General Delegate for Evangelical Protestants in Mali. Born into a nomadic Islamic family, he converted to Christianity in 1967 and has since dedicated his life to ministry, despite significant persecution. Yattara has played a key role in growing the Christian community in Timbuktu and translating the Bible into Tamasheq. He partners with organizations like Voice of the Martyrs to distribute Christian literature and leads evangelistic efforts through direct outreach, social projects, and the Jesus Film. Voyage sans frontières entre l'Afrique et son grand désert le Sahara, le Japon et la France, en compagnie d'une voyageuse des sables tenace, qui a su trouver parmi les Touaregs sa place dans le monde.   Française par son père, Japonaise par sa mère et Saharienne par élan et par choix, Alissa Descotes-Toyosaki a tutoyé le désert en 1997 pour la première fois. Ce fut une révélation, son épiphanie. Après quoi pendant des années, elle va parcourir à pied, à dos de chameau ou en 4x4 le Ténéré, le désert malien, mauritanien ou le désert algérien parmi les hauts plateaux du Tassili ou du Hoggar.Seule femme au milieu d'une quarantaine de Touaregs, elle va embarquer en 1998 sur une caravane de sel, pendant quarante jours, dans le désert du Ténéré jusqu'à l'oasis de Bilma. Puis quelques années après, Alissa décide de pousser le voyage jusqu'au Nigeria, sur 3 000 km à dos de chameau, livrée au vent, au sable et au soleil ; une caravane qu'elle va vivre et documenter patiemment, pendant quatre mois, caméra à l'épaule.  Depuis l'Algérie, elle va fonder ensuite une association pour dynamiser l'élevage nomade et diffuser cette culture touarègue qui désormais la traverse, la constitue.Sahara, 8,5 millions de kilomètres carrés : vaste terrain pour écrire les plus belles pages de sa vie, avec l'humilité qu'exige le désert, à une époque aussi où il était encore possible pour une Occidentale de circuler librement dans ces contrées. According to their bio, in the Tamasheq language, Tamikrest means “connection.”  The group members come from Mali, Niger, Algeria and France.  Their music takes root in Ishumar “rebel music” Rock, or Tuareg Blues….and it flowers - expanding as they explore and include their ever widening set of influences. Their singer Ousman Ag Mosa lives, as he says, “everywhere in the desert” - because he is a nomad. Generally he walks somewhere south of Algeria and north of Mali.  The Tamasheq people want to preserve their culture, their way of life, and their land.  He sings in Tamasheq, to keep their poems, history and the music alive.  Their latest album “Tamotäit” is available on Glitterbeat Records. Regardless of what language you speak, music transcends geographies and Bombino's epic guitar shredding is a language I think all of us can appreciate. This week's podcast is the first ever bilingual episode with The Sultan of Shred: Bombino (born Goumour Almoctar, also known as Oumara Moctar) came of age during a time of significant political upheaval and fled with his family to Algeria after living in the nomadic Tuareg encampment Tidene, just outside Agadez, Niger. Bombino taught himself guitar by watching videos of his heroes like Jimi Hendrix. After years of honing his skills back home and spending time as a shepherd in Libya, he first left Africa and traveled to California in 2006 as lead soloist on tour with Tidawt. During his trip to California, he had the chance to record a desert blues version of the Rolling Stones classic “Hey Negrita” alongside Stones' members Keith Richards and Charlie Watts.  He has released a highly acclaimed studio album, Deran, including one rave reviews from in the form of a full page feature in the New York Times which dubbed Bombino ‘The Sultan of Shred'  Deran was nominated for Best World Music Album Grammy, the first-ever Grammy nomination for an artist from Niger. His latest album, 'Live In Amsterdam' was was released in November 2020.  Bombino held the center stage at Worldfest and it was an honor to sit down with him to discuss his life, travels and musical inspirations.  He is an advocate for teaching children the Tuareg language of Tamasheq, the local Haoussa language as well as French and Arabic, all of which he speaks fluently. On the coldest day of 2021, musician and writer Samira Dainan went to Poppodium Duycker in Hoofddorp to meet with Ousmane Ag Mossa, the bandleader of Tamikrest. Named the new legend of Tuareg music, Ousmane speaks on what it means to write music in the solitude of the Sahara desert. In this podcast, he speaks on the power and the meaning of his music, and how each song breaths a whole life-world and history. Founded in 2006, in Kidal in Mali, Tamikrest call themselves ‘the children of Ibrahim', after Ibrahim Ag al Habib, the founder of the leading Tuareg band Tinariwen. In spite of ongoing riots and regional conflicts, which have a gripping force on their lives since the independence of Mali, Tamikrest seeks to make music reflecting their Tamasheq poetry and culture: “A desert hosts us, a language unites us, a culture binds us.” About Samira Dainan: After finishing her degree in Law, Samira's love for music evoked a long-term research into her Arabic, Berber and African heritage. This brought her to Morocco and the Sahara, where she played and collaborated with local musicians¬, ranging from Amazigh, Trans Sahara to North African folk. Because of its powerful sound, message and healing rhythm, countless alternative bands in Morocco and North Africa such as Tuareg bands Tinariwen and Bombino are emerging in the music scene. Yet, in the Netherlands this genre of music is still in the margins. Au Mali, les autorités de transition et la Cour pénale internationale organisent mardi 30 mars une cérémonie de réparation symbolique dans l’affaire des mausolées de Tombouctou. Elle fait suite à la condamnation par la CPI, en 2016, d’Ahmad Al Faqi Al Mahdi, cadre d’Ansar Dine. Également connu sous le nom d’Abou Tourab, il avait commandé la destruction des mausolées de Tombouctou en 2012, pendant l’occupation du nord du pays par des groupes jihadistes liés à Aqmi. À cette occasion, l’envoyé spécial de RFI à Tombouctou David Baché a rencontré Aboubacrine Cissé, le maire de la ville. Il est question de cette cérémonie, des réparations prévues pour les habitants de Tombouctou mais également de la situation actuelle, sécuritaire et politique.  Rfi : Les mausolées de Tombouctou ont été détruits pendant l’occupation jihadiste en 2012, ils ont été reconstruits en 2015. Leur destructeur, Abou Tourab, a été condamné par la Cour Pénale internationale et aujourd’hui il y a cette cérémonie de réparation aux victimes de Tombouctou. En tant que maire de la ville, est-ce une satisfaction, un soulagement ? Aboubacrine Cissé : Effectivement, les mausolées ont été détruits, ce qui a fait beaucoup de mal aux Tombouctiens. Fort heureusement, les partenaires ont reconstruit ces mausolées, donc c’est une satisfaction. Satisfaction encore totale, lorsqu’il y a une cérémonie qui est consacrée à la réparation de tout ce mal à l’ensemble des populations de Tombouctou. Et c’est une fête. Il y a eu la destruction des mausolées, mais de nombreuses mosquées ont aussi été endommagées pendant l’occupation jihadiste. Des manuscrits ont été détruits. Ce patrimoine culturel, la ville le retrouve petit à petit ? Oui, le patrimoine culturel est en train de se reconstituer, si je parle de ces manuscrits qui ont été détruits. Ils ont commencé à être numérisés et préservés ? Oui, bien sûr. C’est ce qui est en train de se faire. Aujourd’hui, pendant cette cérémonie, il y a le versement d’un euro symbolique aux victimes de Tombouctou. Mais dans son jugement, la Cour pénale internationale a aussi ordonné le versement de 2 millions 700 000 euros aux victimes de Tombouctou, qui sont débloqués par la CPI, elle-même. Cet argent a été versé aux personnes qui sont en lien direct avec les mausolées, mais il n’a pas servi à l’ensemble de la population de la ville. Est-ce qu’il n’aurait pas pu servir, par exemple, à la construction d’infrastructures, d’égouts, à la rénovation de bâtiments, pour que toute la ville en profite ? Oui, c’est l’idée, d’ailleurs. Parce que, quand il y a un versement d’une telle somme, ce qu’il aurait été bien de faire pour toute la ville, c’est la construction d’une mosquée. C’est, d’aller dans des actions de ce genre, qui vont servir toute la population. Est-ce qu’après la condamnation d’Al Faqi Al Mahdi, vous attendez d’autres condamnations ? À ce jour, il est le seul. Est-ce que ce n’est pas l’arbre qui cache la forêt ? Oui, parce que, ce qui est certain, c’est qu’il n’était pas seul, ici. Il y avait quand même d’autres gens qui étaient là. On doit continuer à pouvoir en identifier d’autres, aussi. Aujourd’hui, sur le plan sécuritaire, Tombouctou connaît moins d’attaques terroristes que par le passé. Ce sont surtout le centre du Mali, la région des Trois frontières, qui sont visés actuellement. Est-ce que, pour autant, vous diriez que la situation s’est apaisée dans la ville, dans la région ? Nous constatons avec beaucoup de satisfaction et de joie cette accalmie. Mais c’est une accalmie relative. Aujourd’hui, la présence des groupes radicaux jihadistes se fait quand même sentir ? Je ne parlerais même pas de jihadistes. Parce que c’est une insécurité qui est alimentée par d’autres gens. Parce que, nous assistons à des braquages sur les routes et ce ne sont pas les jihadistes qui le font. C’est le banditisme. Parce que, nous assistons à des braquages, nous assistons à des enlèvements… Nous assistons à beaucoup d’actions que je n’attribuerais pas au jihadisme, mais je les attribuerais tout simplement au banditisme. Justement, ce banditisme n’aide pas à la réconciliation intercommunautaire, qui était une priorité, après l’occupation jihadiste de 2012, entre les communautés songhai, arabes, tamasheq, peules… Aujourd’hui, par exemple, lorsqu’il y a des actes de banditisme, on voit des boutiques de commerçants arabes se faire prendre pour cible, en termes de représailles. Cela veut dire que cette réconciliation est toujours difficile à atteindre  Non, cette réconciliation n’est pas difficile à atteindre. Les populations ont compris qu’elles ont un ennemi commun : l’insécurité. Et pour cela, les populations se remettent petit à petit ensemble, pour combattre le mal qui se présente à elles. Il y a quand même eu des marches, organisées ces derniers mois par les peaux claires - Arables, Tamasheq - pour justement, demander la fin des discriminations à leur égard. Je ne parlerais pas de discriminations. Seulement de cette méfiance créée par l’insécurité. Les arabes, les touaregs, les songhai… Nous sommes tous les mêmes. Cette situation, qui va créer une division entre nous, on n’en veut pas. On veut vraiment être ensemble, parce nous avons toujours été ensemble. Une dernière question plus politique : depuis le coup d’État du mois d’août dernier, la mise en place des autorités de transition, est-ce qu’ici, à Tombouctou, cela a changé quelque chose ? Est-ce que vous avez des attentes ? Les seules attentes que nous avons - en tout cas la population de Tombouctou et du Nord du Mali, en général - c’est surtout le retour de la sécurité, de la paix et de la réconciliation. Le changement de régime, déjà, c’est un changement politique. Et nous avons les autorités de la transition qui ont passé un message, celui de ramener la paix dans tout le pays. Nous sommes en train de vivre ce calme, en tout cas pour le moment, à Tombouctou. Je suis optimiste, parce que les populations mêmes, à la base, n’entendent plus se laisser faire. S’il y a quelque chose qui ne va pas, elles sont prêtes à se révolter. C’est pourquoi, les autorités de la transition sont astreintes à faire en sorte qu’il y ait cette accalmie, qu’ils travaillent pour le bonheur de la population. C’est à ce sujet-là que je suis optimiste. Ce changement était attendu ? Il était attendu, je ne sais pas. Mais en tout cas il y a eu du changement, quand même.  

Onze pays européens ont annoncé le vendredi 27 mars 2020 le lancement officiel de la future force "Takuba" (qui signifie "sabre", en langue Tamasheq). Il s'agit d’un groupement de forces spéciales européennes destiné à accompagner les soldats maliens au combat face aux jihadistes qui écument le nord du pays.

El programa de hoy para mi es especial. Estoy diciendo adiós a una gente, muy próxima a mi desde la distancia, que me han acompañado los últimos 40 años. todos nos hemos hecho mayores, muy mayores. Estoy hablando de Oskorri, el grupo de música de origen vasco de mis amores. El pack “Hauxe da despedidia” que apareció en 2016 consta de 19 temas en CD y 25 en el DVD.Conviene resaltar también el contenido visual del lanzamiento, con fotografías juveniles del grupo y de la larga treintena de miembros que han pasado o colaborado con él. Además, ayudan a contextualizar el viaje, las imágenes de las cintas rescatadas con los temas inéditos, la del carné de Natxo del Sindicato Nacional de Espectáculos de la época franquista y hasta de una denuncia del Gobierno Civil de Navarra, en 1976 y que acabó en multa, por “pronunciar frases de matiz tendencioso” en un concierto relativas a los patronos, las fábricas, la opresión, la falta de libertad y la persecución de trabajadores y patriotas. Con Oskorri, y a través del grupo, se puede contar y cantar la historia de Euskal Herria. Nos acompaña también “Kidal” el CD publicado por Tamikrest este mismo año. Tamikrest es una banda maliana de músicos que pertenecen al pueblo tuareg. La banda fue fundada en el año 2006.Se mezclan la música africana tradicional con influencias de rock y pop occidentales y cantar en Tamasheq. Principal compositor y líder de la banda es Ousmane Ag Mossa. Tamikrest aparece en un momento de auge para la cultura rock/pop africana con proyección internacional siendo pioneros junto a otras bandas que ya tienen renombre internacional, y se caracterizan por mantener parte de la cultura africana en su música (principalmente percusión) y sus letras, cargadas con la problemática típica de sus ciudades, además de mezclarla con dialectos africanos actuales, todo esto fusionado con ritmos de moda mundialmente reconocidos (rock y pop). Mucha emoción personal, mucha buena música.

La cérémonie du Turban par Khaira Arby A vrai dire, c'est une musique touarègue Trois ans après en avoir été chassée, elle a fini par revenir à Tombouctou, au nord du Mali. Les djihadistes lui avaient interdit de chanter, détruit ses instruments, menacé sa famille et sa vie… Contrainte à l’exil, Khaira Arby, légendaire griotte à la carrière internationale, n’a jamais cessé de chanter pour son peuple et de se battre pour son droit à la musique. Dans cet enregistrement réalisé à Bamako en 2016, elle nous présente l’une des coutumes festives que les fous de Dieu avaient prohibé : le "Tabaikar", la cérémonie du turban. Ce rituel est pratiqué pour les hommes Tamasheq et Sonrhaï lors du mariage religieux ou pendant les fêtes de Maouloud (anniversaire de la naissance du Prophète). Il marque le passage de l’enfance à l’âge à adulte, l’acquisition du turban symbolisant la prise de responsabilité de l’homme au sein de sa communauté, et de l’époux dans sa famille. Guitares électriques, chants, tindés et percussions variées, cette cérémonie est surtout l’occasion de (re)découvrir ici l’une des plus fabuleuses voix d’Afrique de l’ouest.Le titre interprété est « Mali » de Khaira Arby. Our album of the week comes from The Hut People and extraordinary combo of Percussion and Piano Accordian. Ever since we saw them at Musicport two years ago we've been waiting in anticipation for their debut album and we haven't been disappointed.
