The 80s gave us horror done right. They had the slashers, they had the thrillers, and they had an abundance of haunted house films. We chat about some of the great ghost tales that hit the big screen in the 80s and 90s, as well as some personal paranormal experiences. After a study in the ebbs and flows of the horror genre from the 80s through the 90s and into the 2000s we finally take a dive into one of our favorite haunted house movies, Th13teen Ghosts. As usual we get derailed several times along the way, but in the end we pay tribute to the film that we feel turned the horror genre around and kick started a new generation of ghost stories. For old school horror fans, there is a pretty deep dive into the films and shenanigans of William Castle that you won't want to miss. Revenge of the remakes continues as we look at a stylized remake of a William Castle film through the filter of 2001 as Tony Shaloub, Matthew Lillard & Shannon Elizabeth star in Thirteen Ghosts. We'll look at the cult following that has grown around the film, argue with Muji about the merits of that following, breakdown the origin story of each ghost, and much more on this highly requested edition of Seeking Human Victims.
"It's a right of passage to know that you're good at executing, but also challenge yourself to understand that at the very root of what we do as designers—whether our medium is physical, digital, websites, billboards or t-shirts—at the end of the day, design is a method of communication, and the design is a manifestation of that communication." riCardo Crespo is a world-class creative director and he is very secretive online. In fact, you won't find much on him at all and he prefers it that way. Referring to himself as a "creative ninja" (he is an MMA fighter), riCardo has worked at global agencies Saatchi & Saatchi, McCann Erickson, Chiat/Day; and he was the global chief creative for Mattel and 20th Century Fox before starting his own shop, Th13teen. riCardo enightens us in this episode with his incredible experience on the differences between branding, marketing & advertising and where they fit together as a part of a venn diagram; as well as why it all starts with brand & purpose. Crespo has an interesting take on portfolios and he doesn't put much weight in them as he touches on subjectivity, explaining & communicating your work. He also discusses being courageous as a creative and how sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone, making a decision on your environment and whether you can find a diplomatic, respectful voice with marketing execs or if you need to find a new environment to collaborate & thrive. Lastly, we discuss the democratic culture of design today, why change for change's sake is bad and why if change is a good strategy then the brands need to suffer through the online criticism. Truthfully, this episode is so jam-packed with value it's hard to find quotes for. Get out your notepad & pen. "We are in the business of cultural identity. We rally communities. We rally people around a movement." This week's episode is a bit different than our normal interview shows or Halftimes. Recently, I had the pleasure of attending Major Level Creative Connect to moderate a panel with the keynote speakers which inluded Todd Radom, Brad Bishop and Michael Thurman of Torch Creative, and RiCardo Crepo of th13teen. In the panel, we discuss battling design-by-committee, the importance of niche communities and portfolios, standing out in a saturated world full of creatives, cultural branding and creative entrepreneurship. The audience included designers and project managers from nearly every MLB organization, as well as a few MLB, MLS and NFL designers. On this week's show, EB and Mike discuss the pros and cons of he most recent "Super Fans" conference call with Six Flags CEO Mark Shapiro. There were some really amazing and candid moments during the call, but did Six Flags miss an opportunity to maximize the good PR? The guys also discuss the recently opened "Th13teen" at Alton Towers in England. Video has been released on the web and some enthusiasts are less than thrilled. Did the Alton Tower's hype machine over-do it this time? Plus, EB goes "Off-Topic" to talk about the rise of Twitter and Mike has information about a possible new direction for the podcast.
