After a challenging 2024, Lemon Perfect knew it was time for a bold reset. Founder Yanni Hufnagel led the charge with a reengineered bottle and improved formula, but the brand's comeback wouldn't be complete without a new look. Enter Paula Grant and creative studio Suite9C, tasked with developing a daring visual identity refresh. This is the story of how a brand turned setback into spotlight. Also in this episode: the hosts unpack Guayaki's unprecedented rebrand to Yerba Madre and what it means for the category-defining brand. They also dive into Gopuff's new GoXL product and whether “value” is shaping up to be a defining theme of 2025. Show notes: 0:45: All Rain, All Rain, All Rain. A Dead Rabbit, A Great Thing. Madre Musing. XLerated Delivery. – Where's that Texas heat? The hosts encounter a rainy, gloomy Austin, but at least The Dead Rabbit delivers on every front. Prior to Taste Radio's meetup later in the day, they discuss Guayaki's rebrand to Yerba Madre and why they're excited to hear from Ghost co-founder Dan Lourenco at BevNET Live. John professes his love for Gopuff, but is he excited about the prospect of buying 12 rolls of toilet paper from the delivery platform? Ray feels left out of a meeting with an Austin-based founder of chai drinks. 12:55: Paula Grant, Founder, Suite9C & Yanni Hufnagel, Founder, Lemon Perfect – Paula chats about Taste Radio's NYC meetup and stealthy afterparty, before Yanni talks about how Lemon's Perfect's product quality issues spurred the company's refreshed formulation and decision to pursue a brand refresh. Paula Paula explains why she rejects the traditional “agency vs. founder” model, instead favoring deeply collaborative, in-the-room design processes. Yanni, a self-described detail obsessive, talks about their intensely collaborative design process, from aligning on visual simplicity to debating tiny but crucial details, like color balance, label hierarchy, and shelf visibility. Paula emphasizes the importance of powerful design that is about aesthetics, storytelling, brand trust, and commercial performance. These days, keeping it simple is one way to be different. At a time when brands are packing their products with processed ingredients and novel sweeteners, some companies are taking a stripped down approach… and getting noticed. This episode, which features an interview with Stephanie McGregor, a veteran food and beverage executive and founder of plant-based drink brand Ringa, explores that dynamic. Show notes: 0:25: Mussel-ed Out. RSVP & See You In S.B. Real Corn Flakes. Live Slice. Miso & Pita. Kartik FTW. – Ray shares some important advice about dining out based on recent experience. He may be nicknamed “The Beverage Whisperer,” but when Ken Sadowsky speaks he's heard loud and clear.  A longtime industry advisor and investor, Ken is one of the most respected and influential voices in the beverage business. Ken is currently the executive director of The Northeastern Independent Distributors Association, known as NIDA, a group of wholesalers that operate in states from Maine to Pennsylvania. He's also a senior advisor with Verlivest, the Belgium-based investment holding company founded by the owners of Anheuser-Busch InBev, which holds stakes in Oatly, Vita Coco and Hint Water. Ken is personally invested in and an advisor to several beverage companies including LifeAid, Icelandic Glacial, Recess and Dyla Brands.  This episode is the third of a trilogy with Ken, who also joined us for conversations in 2016 and 2019. Ken and Taste Radio editor Ray Latif sample drinks representing fast-growing, bleeding-edge and established categories, including better-for-you sodas, cannabis libations, nonalcoholic cocktails, and shots of the juice variety. As they sip their way through a mish-mash of beverages, Ken shares his perspective on trendy concepts, package design, formulation his investment thesis, and successful retail strategies. Show notes: 0:35: Ken Sadowsky, The Beverage Whisperer – Ken and Ray engage in some Sox talk before they dive into a mass of beverages, foreign and domestic. Ken talks about cutting his teeth back in 1983 and his ability to understand what brands have what it takes to go from “the core consumer to the more consumer” and why he's not bullish on non-nutritive sugar alternatives. They sip on some Chamberlain Coffee and chat about how the cold brew coffee category has morphed and whether non-alcoholic cocktails are – at this point – more sizzle than steak. Ken also explains why he's a fan of entrepreneurs with industry experience and why it's important to be nice to your distributors, before sipping on Olipop's limited-edition Barbie collaboration and sharing his take on the future of better-for-you sodas. He also admits to being an “illegal cannabis consumer” (not really), why you should sample beverages warm, getting retailers to merchandise your brand in two locations and the Catch-22 of fundraising. It's no secret that Patrick Mahomes is one of the best players in the NFL. What is perhaps less known is his beverage of choice throughout the day: coffee. The three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback says he drinks at least five cups a day to stay energized. It's only fitting that Patrick is the lead investor in Throne Sport Coffee, a better-for-you iced coffee brand developed for athletes and active consumers. Founded by former BodyArmor marketing chief Michael Fedele, Throne is made with sustainably sourced arabica coffee and contains 150mg of natural caffeine per 11 oz. can. The products, which are sweetened with cane sugar and enhanced with B vitamins, electrolytes and BCAAs, come in four varieties: Mocha Java, Salted Caramel, French Vanilla and Black. Prior to Throne's launch on May 16, we sat down with Patrick and Michael who discussed the origins of the brand and their relationship, why the brand's target audience includes both health-minded athletes and blue-collar workers, the reason they don't describe the products as energy drinks, the company's initial focus on convenience stores and how Patrick is highlighting his consumption habits to build an authentic relationship with consumers. Show notes: 0:35: Michael Fedele, Founder/CEO & Patrick Mahomes, Lead Investor, Throne Sport Coffee — Taste Radio editor and Buffalo Bills fan Ray Latif clears the air with Patrick before Michael explains his interest in entrepreneurship and the opportunity he saw in the RTD coffee category. Tom Brady Merges TB12 With NOBULL | Can NOBULL Become a "Complete Wellness Lifestyle Company"?

the Joshua Schall Audio Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 1, 2024 12:47

Footwear, apparel, and now nutrition…does the Tom Brady-infused NOBULL have what it takes to build a “complete wellness company”? To be fully honest, it's been maybe four or five years since I've thought deeply about the TB12 brand. While the ideological foundation of the brand was (and still is) compelling, I became disinterested relatively quickly…as the level of execution required to bring that brand distinctiveness to life just wasn't initially apparent. But my TB12 interest was reinvigorated this week…along with a bolstered belief that it could potentially have an intriguing future, after I read trending news headline. Tom Brady has struck a deal to merge his wellness company, TB12, and his apparel line, Brady Brand, with the sportswear brand NOBULL. The combined company will retain the NOBULL name…and Tom Brady becomes its second-largest shareholder after Mike Repole, who bought a majority stake in the company in July of 2023 through his investment firm, Impact Capital. So, what would an astute businessman like Mike Repole (i.e. turned Vitaminwater and BodyArmor into household beverage names) want with TB12 that was rumored to be generating less than 8-figures in revenue (CPG segment) and was losing tons of money on the bottom line. Firstly (and most obviously), Mike Repole is acquihiring Tom Brady. This isn't Mike Repole's first rodeo with this “sports marketing” strategy…as he iterated Gatorade's playbook in the 2010s after noticing consumers spending more time on social media platforms and becoming more involved with “celebrity” parasocial relationships. So, that's at least partly why BodyArmor decided to have athlete investors over the typical athlete spokespeople…thus allowing them to leverage their growing authentic microphones and public interest in an athlete's life away from sports. But beyond the obvious interest in having one the greatest winners of all-time (Tom Brady) on his team, Mike Repole had the same “diamond in the rough” feeling that I got many years ago around the TB12 brand. And no, I'm not talking about the supplement product line…because those (great or not) are only the entry fee to compete in the market. With Tom Brady much more intentionally focused and engaged on business, the holistic wellness methodology of TB12 turns bolder and has more defensible distinctiveness. But then you also align it with the larger NOBULL strategic narrative…plus you can't forget the added benefit of the CPG industry savviness from Mike Repole, and there's a real possibility something extremely special could happen within this pursuit towards becoming a billion-dollar “complete wellness company.” From Nike to lululemon to even Alo (which is a brand I'll discuss further on my channel very soon), these activewear brands aren't just selling apparel…they're selling a lifestyle. Reorienting around wellness and adding Tom Brady's star power gives NOBULL a lot of strategic optionality throughout its ambitious build process…which is great and most likely directs them towards an IPO in the relatively near future. Running your own business is like a marathon at the speed of a sprintYour mental health is under constant stress, what I realized early on is it's a very lonely space to do it, because there are very few people who do this.Quite frankly, you're dealing with more failures than successes than from the outside people see.I still remember sitting on my balcony with helicopters flying by, with soldiers and machine guns roads were blocked. You know buildings boarded up or you know it was, it was absolutely intense.20 YEARS IN PERSPECTIVE:We built the number one vitamin water brand in the UK and Ireland, it was bought by Pepsi several years later.I worked for Pepsi for 3 -4 years in the UK and then we had this second big adventure together with the same wonderful business partner where we moved to Los Angeles.I had immediately another and entrepreneurial bug, so I started the first low-cost gym chain in the UK, but I quickly realized how difficult it is to start a company when you don't have a business partner as incredibly fun and smart and nice to work with. So I decided to let that go.And eleven years later we're still here thriving and building the business. We just increased our distribution footprint with a massive deal in Target which is super exciting. On topic: vitamins, supplements, the supplements market opportunity in the USWe realized very quickly that the vitamin market was huge in America, yet it was extremely outdated, so this was ripe for disruption, which is why we settled here in LA, which is considered the centre of health and wellness. This is where the trends start they show up first on TV programs, or in movies and then they spread across the world. It's not a multivitamin that will fix your unhealthy diet, right? The basis has to be right, you should eat your vegetables, your fruit, ideally you got your fiber, etc., that is really an ideal foundation. And then I would recommend to supplement or, as we say, complement with those micronutrients that are hard to come by with a regular diet. Here in the United States there's a real shrinking of the gut microbiome, because the diets are not very well-balanced.As you age your digestive enzymes deplete actually and this helps you break down the foods and foods have become more and more complicated, especially processed foods. On topic: start-ups, entrepreneurial endeavors, INSEAD business partnersIf you think about that, we have spent at this point 5,000 days together, which is a long time. It's a very special relationship to have a business partner for many, many years. They know your real working life from a very unique perspective. It's not the same as having a report or having a boss is not the same as having a life partner, it is different. When you start something you can develop a bit of luck and you develop opportunities and things that you wouldn't have known were going to start when you began the businessAll things INSEAD and giving backI honestly think that we have profited from the INSEAD connections almost more than anybody else.We raised our seed money largely through INSEAD alums to get the V-water business off the off the ground. So a lot of our seed investors were INSEAD, 2 of our board members of V-water were also INSEAD. Several of our INSEAD original investors have continued to support us with the HUM nutrition business in Los Angeles.

Movement at the Still Point, An Ode to Dance In this episode of  “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey, join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest: Mark Mann, renowned Celebrity Photographer, who found himself, like all of us, silent and without a space to create during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. For an artist, not being able to create is lonely, for a dancer, not being able to move, is a daily death. Enter sister-in-law, Loni Landon, choreographer, dancer & movement director living in NYC who suggested to Mark to take some photographs of her community who were hurting as well. Together with Loni, Jacob Levy (Mark's producer) along with a host of other yes's, and over 140 dancers, a collaboration was born that transcends any photographic lens. Mark says it best: "In what had been my first moment of stillness, I discovered boundless humanity in their movement. This book is a testament to the power of their expression, in movement and stillness." MARK MANN is a renowned celebrity and advertising photographer who originally hails from the sun-soaked streets of Glasgow Scotland. The countless list of famous faces photographed in Mann's unique and recognizable style includes President Barack Obama, President Bill Clinton, Iggy Pop, Rihanna, Martin Scorcese, Jennifer Aniston, Stevie Wonder, Eartha Kitt, Robin Williams, Emma Stone, Bill Murray, Jessica Lange, Arthur Miller, Margot Robbie, Robert Redford, Queen Latifah, Michael Douglas, Gillian Anderson, Dave Chappelle, Olivia Wilde, Bradley Cooper, Willie Nelson, Sean Connery and many more. Mark's editorial work has appeared in Esquire, Men's Health, Vibe, Spin, Fortune, Billboard, Parade, and Complex, and his clients include Reebok, Adidas, Hennessy, Bombay Sapphire, Pepsi, Gillette, Vitamin Water, NHL, Zumba, Ford, Chrysler, and Svedka to name a few. Always hungry for new subjects and challenges Mark has spearheaded his own projects over the years, one of which was creating a collection of LUCHA LIBRE wrestlers.  Where all the photographs were shot on a vintage Graflex camera using polaroid instant film. Most recently he was struck by the contrast of dancing bodies to his traditional portraits in a new body of work which culminated in a book titled Movement at The Still Point: an Ode to Dance published by Rizzoli International in March 2023.  Mark was born in Glasgow, where he lived until he was accepted to the prestigious photographic program at Manchester Polytechnic. Upon graduating Mark was immediately taken under the wing by innovative fashion photographers, Nick Knight and Miles Aldridge, where he learned the ropes and quickly built his own body of work. Three years later, Mark started shooting on his own and relocated to New York City where 26 years later he still lives with his wife and son, and their recently adopted Chihuahua, Shaq. https://movementatthestillpoint.com/ Follow @markmannphoto on Instagram Follow Joanne Carey on Instagram @westfieldschoolofdance And follow  “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey wherever you listen to your podcasts. I'm your host, Brett Gilliland, and today I've got Ryan Lewendon with me. Ryan, how you doing?  Ryan Lewendon: Great. I'm doing great, Brett. Thanks for having me. I'm excited to be here.  Brett Gilliland: Absolutely, man. You're coming to us from New York City today, is that correct?  Ryan Lewendon: That is right. I'm in, uh, Manhattan at my, uh, at my apartment, just, uh, Pump to pump to speak. Brett Gilliland: Awesome. Awesome, man. Well, I know you also have an office in California as well. Uh, Giannuzzi Lewendon Law Firm, uh, is a high growth food, beverage, and personal care industries is who you guys are serving. You guys founded it in 2011. Uh, you represent over a thousand consumer products. And here's the one that my kids were excited about. I told you before we started recording. It says, uh, most notably Ryan represented Body Armor in Coca-Cola's, largest ever brand acquisition with Coca-Cola, purchasing the remainder of Body Armor for 5.6 billion dollars at an enterprise value of 8 billion dollars man, talk about that a little bit, man. Cause that's, that doesn't just happen overnight. So that was a long journey, I'm sure, right?  Ryan Lewendon: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you know, my firm Giannuzzi Lewendon, we, we differentiate ourselves in really two ways. One, We're contextual experts in consumer, right? So we only work with consumer brands. We only work on the brand side, and it's all sort of everything topical or ingestible. So that's food, that's beverage, that's spirits, that's baby, that's pet, that's beauty, right? And um, I got into the industry through Vitamin Water. So my partner Nick, and I. We're the first lawyers for Vitamin Water and we get everything for Vitamin Water from every min, every round of financing, every distribution agreement, manufacturing agreement, every celebrity partnership, 50 cents deal with Vitamin Water. We had his, uh, own flavor and equity in the brand was one of my first deals at a law school and Jennifer Anniston's deal, which became, we went with Smartwater. That became one of the longest running CPG partnerships of all time. I think it went over 15 years after the sale to Coke, we did everything, uh, through the sale of Coke for 4.8 billion in 2007. Um, and from there we realized we had this great perspective on how to grow and scale a C P G business from the ground up. Right? Mo most lawyers kind of have this top down perspective on their clients. Like they know what the legal aspects are, but they don't really know how or why the business is built or why it grows, or why the people in the industry are important or how they interlock. And because of our experience of Vitamin Water, we realized we had this great viewpoint on it and we realized that these, these entrepreneurs who were growing these fast businesses, um, it was very valuable to them. So, uh, you know, Nick and I sort of, Put a little end cap on the career. Um, you know, last year with, uh, the Body Armor deal. Um, that's a company that I had worked with since, uh, 2011 when we started the firm. Um, you know, we left a bigger firm we were at and, and started this firm and, um, you know, it was, it was a great experience just from, you know, everything from, you know, the Kobe deal to the keurig Dr. Pepper deal to the Coke deal and, um, yeah, it, it, it was a, you know, it was a overnight success that, you know, happened over 10 years.
