A lie travels halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its boots. Everyone has heard that chestnut, but Sinan Aral has actually proved it. He was one of the first to warn about the corrosive effects of social media with a celebrated Science Magazine cover story, a seminal book, The Hype Machine, and a vast study showing that fake news spreads faster and farther than the truth. Sinan is a marketing, IT, and data science professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, so he sees disinformation through the lens of marketing. In this episode, we will also discuss what Sinan calls “the end of reality” in political discourse, the role of professional media in its own demise, and the strategies democracies need to take to defend the truth.
Sinan Aral, scientist, investor, entrepreneur, and David Austin Professor of Management, Marketing and Data Science at MIT, discusses his book, The Hype Machine. We look “under the hood” at the neuro science powering “the social media industrial complex” to influence behaviour and the five communications strategies for our hyper-socialised world.Links: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sinan-aral-3964a7/https://www.sinanaral.io/books
Rob Bradford, of WEEI.com, joined Gresh and Keefe to defend his fashion choices, and to discuss last night's home run ball negotiations, the hype surrounding Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas, the contract extension for Kike Hernandez, the offseason of Xander Bogaerts, and the AL MVP race.

Eric Sharp on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 5/11/22 About Eric Sharp - Eric Sharp combines a conscientious mindset with unshakable musical passion. As a DJ, Eric has brought his own style of intelligent, sophisticated, somatic house music comfortably to intimate private parties, club nights, and massive festivals alike - most recently being tapped for a residency at LA's esteemed Sound Nightclub. With his personal productions, Eric has expanded his impact beyond simply a purveyor of taste and into a true creator. In 2013, Sharp signed to Win Music (home of Duke Dumont, Tiga, and more) and released his EP “Sharp Cuts.” Fronted by vocals from Anna Lunoe and others, the release of these songs cemented Eric as a true artist. He has continued to build upon this foundation with remixes for Atlantic Records' Melanie Martinez, Major Lazer's Jillionaire, and Grammy winners Jars Of Clay. 2018 saw Eric's music reach new heights, smashing previous plateaus with the release of his Eric Sharp & Friends EP via Little Assembly. His productions remain widely lauded in press, with Take This Time holding the #1 spot on Hype Machine for 3 days and Too Much also hitting the top 20. In 2019 Eric released Monday Blues via Sweden's House Music With Love imprint, again topping Hype Machine and amassing over 450k Spotify streams. Now emerging from COVID lockdowns with an arsenal of new work, expect an onslaught of emotive and driving dance music to come from this passionate soul while he continues to move crowds with his infectious energy. In this episode of Behind The Decks, we checked in with indie electronic and nu-disco production duo, Betablock3r. They began by making remixes for a host of successful artists including Ellie Goulding, RAC and Selena Gomez. They released their debut EP Monolith in 2018 and have put out a number of singles which have charted on Hype Machine and featured on tastemaker playlists for Spotify and Apple Music. In this episode we discuss Chris and Ryan's music journey and how Ryan originally started in a death-metal band. For Chris, we talk about the fakery that exists in the music industry and how young artists have a hard time understanding the value in what they do outside of monetary success. For Ryan we talk about the streaming wars and how independent artists can retain independency through alternative avenues of funding. For the duo's mental health journey, Chris talks about living with undiagnosed ADD and how that impacted his education and his adult life, the severe anxiety he lived with at the same time as a child, the positives he's found in physical exercise and a serious back injury he experienced from the gym. For Ryan we talk about his lived experience of depression, anxiety, people-pleasing and how he's learned how to manage his mental health as an adult. SNBRN on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 12/14/21 About SNBRN - Kevin Chapman's introduction to dance music was at age 12 when he stumbled upon music from the likes of Fatboy Slim and Moby. In 2008 he got his first copy of the digital production software, Reason, and started producing his own dance music. Slowly but surely, he began to immerse himself in the LA and San Diego club scenes. By 2013, Kevin had completed multiple professional degrees in audio engineering and production. Shortly thereafter the vision for the SNBRN brand emerged and Kevin embarked on a new creative path. Recognizing the increasing popularity of deep house, indie dance, and nu disco Kevin envisioned a brand that combined all the best elements of each sub-genre while remaining instantly accessible. In May of 2014 the SNBRN project was launched with a series of viral covers and remixes. He was quickly met with a series of career milestones including: multiple HypeMachine chart topping releases, garnering tens of millions of plays on SoundCloud and YouTube, and direct support from Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. South African Championship Tour star Jordy Smith talks about the pro surfing hype machine, surviving the spotlight put on him at a young age, never crumbling under the weight of expectations, and how the media drives sponsorships. He looks back at his eventful quarantine, in which he experienced the birth of his child, was home for a South African winter for the first time in years, and got deep into shaping surfboards. He discusses how other surfers have influenced his surfing, from working to match Dane Reynolds in video parts to pulling inspiration from Taj Burrow's airs and Joel Parkinson and Tom Curren's style. Finally, as he prepares for the upcoming Australian leg of the tour, Jordy breaks down the obsessive work and the intense (and secretive) training regimen that goes into his pursuit of a World Title. Sinan Aral has spent two decades studying how social media impacts our lives, from how we think about politics to how we find a romantic partner. He argues that we're now at the crossroads of a decade of techno-utopianism followed by a decade of techno-dystopianism. How to reconcile the promise and peril of social media is one of the biggest questions facing democracy today.Aral is the David Austin Professor of Management, Marketing, IT, and Data Science at MIT; director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy; and head of MIT's Social Analytics Lab. He is the author of The Hype Machine: How Social Media Disrupts Our Elections, Our Economy, and Our Health — And How We Must Adapt .In his book and in this conversation, Aral goes under the hood of the biggest, most powerful social networks to tackle the critical question of just how much social media actually shapes our choices, for better or worse.Additional InformationThe Hype MachineSinan Aral on TwitterRelated EpisodesFacebook is not a democracyFree speech from the Founding Fathers to Twitter

As pessimism hits a fevered pitch, Carol reveals powerful alternatives that drive differentiation and results for retail product, brand, and solution suppliers. In this episode you'll learn:• Why nega-hype is so pervasive• The best advice Carol received on staying in the game • How price presumptions play into nega-hype• One question that will always set you in the right direction
The hardest part is finding someone dedicated and ambitious enough to build it from scratch. If you can, the easiest way might be to allow them to put it together one piece at a time. If you remain dedicated, you'll look back one day and marvel at what has been created. Because when it's fully operational, it should start pulling people in automatically. That's what I talk to Dshanya Reese, of Watkins Insurance Group, about what she been building the last 10 years.
