I'm podcasting through silk... Dave is breaking all the rules as he takes 2023's Mr. Monk's Last Case off the "shelf". The first time we tackle a made for streamer movie and Phil is not pleased. Frustrated that it's the series finale and looks like a TV show is a challenge to get over as he watches it. Dave enjoys the character and performance of Tony Shaloub while he may end up going back to watch the show. Phil wishes a TV show never ended up on a movie podcast.
This week, we're checking in to the heartbreak hotel and taking the express checkout to Hell as Spooktober continues with a minor forgotbuster based on a story by Stephen King. It's 2007's 1408, directed by Mikael Håfström, and starring John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack, Jasmine Jessica Anthony, Tony Shaloub, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Len Cariou. The movie is not nearly scary enough to really leave a lasting impression, but it's not bad either, as its Swedish director injects a good amount of visual flair into a one-location concept, and Cusack is more than capable of carrying the load in what is largely a one-man show. Plus: We've got a mixed bag of theatrical field reports, as our intrepid hosts have combined to see The Wild Robot and Megalopolis! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 1408 is currently streaming on Hollywood Suite north of the border at the time this episode was released. You can probably also find it at your local library. Other works discussed in this episode include the Netflix Fear Street trilogy, Who Invited Them?, Late Night With The Devil, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, Cloverfield, The Blair Witch Project, [·REC], Quarantine, Searching, Paranormal Activity, The Mist, Scream, Talk To Me, Night of the Living Dead, Resident Evil, Dawn of the Dead (2004), 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, Friday the 13th Part 2, The Babadook, Malignant, Barbarian, Terrifier, Star Trek (2009), Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Mr. McMahon, Morbius, Poltergeist, The Shining, Room 104, Planet Terror, Death Proof, Halloween (2007), The Devil's Rejects, and Black Sheep. We'll be back next week as Spooktober continues with a well-regarded horror classic from one of the original masters of the genre, as we finally catch up with Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!

Host Meg Wolitzer presents three works about change. Yalcin Tosun's “Muzaffer and Bananas” explores the awkward rites of passage of two teenaged boys. It's performed by Arian Moayed. In Anya DeNiro's “Take Pills and Wait for Hips,” performed by Pooya Mohseni, a trans woman reflects on her life before and after the change. And a former couple rehearse the disintegration of their relationship—on a street corner—in A.M. Homes' “Goodbye to the Road Not Taken” performed by Jane Kaczmarek and Tony Shalhoub.

Did you know that each ghost in this movie has an intricate backstory? And that the director had exclusively directed commercials before someone handed him a $42mil budget to make this movie? And that Tony Shaloub was literally depressed while filming this (okay that one is speculation, but it makes sense)?

If Samuel L. Jackson offered you an easy out that included free booze would you take it? No? We prefer the hard way too. In this episode Sean and Dan talk about 2007's 1408, an adaptation of a Stephen King story that finds a skeptical writer trapped inside a sinister hotel room. With a powerful performance from John Cusak, this thriller explores grief, hubris, and will make you question your safety whenever you come across a generic, knock off painting. email: openmicmovies@latertaterfilms.comwebsite: openmicmovies.buzzsprout.cominstagram: @latertaterfilms
Join Dave and Wayne for genre television show news, a glimpse into what the hosts are currently watching, and commentary and analysis of the Netflix anthology series Black Mirror. This week on the SciFi TV Rewatch podcast we discuss the groundbreaking “choose your own adventure” episode “Bandersnatch.” While its thematic material revolves around the well explored fate vs free will motif, the technical aspects stand out. In our What We're Watching segment, Dave sheepishly admits to enjoying the Turkish Netflix series As the Crow Flies, and Wayne surprisingly praises the MCU film The Marvels. In Listener Feedback, Alan in England enjoys having the option to choose, and Fred from the Netherlands checks out Tony Shaloub in Monk.
Nun kehrt Tony Shaloub in seiner Paraderolle zurück. It seems that passengers are finding new ways to make air travel miserable and just nasty overall. That's where Steven Weber and Tim Daly come in! They share their idea for a new "Wings" series with Tony "I Won A Tony" Shahloub. It's a topical look at the trials and tribulations of small charter airline pilots with gastrointestinal distress. Coming to a streaming service soon (no pun intended)!
On today's episode, we're heading to our new glass house that we inherited, but we're also trying to fight for our lives while we revisit the absolutely cult classic horror film, Thir13n Ghosts (2001). This movie was written by Neal Marshall Stevens and Richard D'Ovidio and directed by Steve Beck. This movie stars Tony Shaloub, Shannon Elizabeth, F. Horror is an interesting genre that captures many stories in its web, as well as ghosts in a glass house. The campiest cult film we have done for Halloween Horror Month is here in the remake to the 1960 original. The film with enough energy, world building and Matthew Lillard to get us through the night. This is Thirteen Ghosts...or Thir13en Ghosts....or 13 Ghosts...its a movie with ghosts.
We continue our odyssey into Development Hell to wrap up our dissection of Tim Burton's unmade Superman Lives! Having covered the origins of Jon Peters and the beginnings of this project through Kevin Smith's role in this story, we now focus in on Burton's vision for Nick Cage as the Man of Steel in a story of the ultimate outsider. We cover the cavalcade of wildly talented artists involved, the utter pain in the ass that Jon Peters was for basically everyone involved, the panic spiral Warner Bros found themselves in, and just how the death of Superman Lives led to Superman Returns -- including as much as we could stomach of the absolutely buckwild idea J. J. Abrams had that cost us a Batman vs. Superman film written by the guy who wrote Se7en. We also touch on Warner Bros current woes following their merger with Discovery, as it seems like they've learned nothing from their mistakes. We hope that you enjoy the conclusion to this absurd story in which people are wildly in-character throughout, because sadly no one paid us $85 million not to do it. Settle in and wonder for yourselves whether Saved By The Bell's Zack Morris or Tony Shaloub would be your dream Superman. If video killed the radio star, then podcasts sparked a resurrection of audio storytelling. From the stage to your ears, we're taking a trip to the theatre this week and putting live performance podcasts in the limelight. Even in a pandemic, the show must go on. Social distancing temporarily put a pause on live events, but arts workers used the opportunity to get creative. We'll hear part of the play "Cast Iron," a co-production between Toronto's Factory Theatre and Obsidian Theatre Company. It follows the story of a Barbadian woman who is haunted by the ghosts of her past. This version was produced just for audio, with sound effects performed live by a Foley artist. Plus: you may know Tony Shaloub from his work in film and TV, but we'll hear his comedic turn as a clam in therapy to work up the courage to come out of his shell. In the tragic vein, we've got a snippet of playwright David Yee's "Carried Away on the Crest of a Wave." It weaves together nine different stories of the deadliest known tsunami in human history. Let's get this show on the road! Podcasts featured: Playing On Air, Cast Iron, Listen To This Presents The Wrong Bashir, PlayME, and Audiomoves. For more info and links to everything on this week's show, head to http://cbc.ca/podcastplaylist.

Today, based on two listeners' suggestions, Ali and Asif discuss ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' and Trichotillomania. Asif admits to only having watched the pilot of ‘Mrs Maisel' (2:26) and as such, Ali gives Asif a sales pitch on why the show should be watched. After a brief digression about TV shows that they were exposed to on airline flights, Ali compares ‘Mrs. Maisel' to Amy Sherman-Palladino's previous show ‘Gilmore Girls' as well as musicals. Then Ali gushes about the expert acting of all the principal characters in the show, particularly Alex Bornstein, Tony Shaloub, Marin Hinkle and especially Rachel Brosnahan. Then Ali asks Asif about trichotillomania (28:47). Asif talks about the definition, how often it is seen and how it is diagnosed. Asif then discusses how it is different from OCD and why we think it occurs. Asif then talks about the long term consequences of trichotillomania including compulsive hair eating (trichophagia) and the treatment of the disorder. Did you know that each ghost in this movie has an intricate backstory? And that the director had exclusively directed commercials before someone handed him a $42mil budget to make this movie? And that Tony Shaloub was literally depressed while filming this (okay that one is speculation, but it makes sense)?

We'll look at the cult following that has grown around the film, argue with Muji about the merits of that following, breakdown the origin story of each ghost, and much more on this highly requested edition of Seeking Human Victims.

Stark Raving Mad WAS a show. Starring comedic powerhouses Neil Patrick Harris and Tony Shaloub, this odd-couple type sitcom was about a fast-rising Junior Editor (Harris) paired with an eccentric bestselling horror novelist (Shaloub) to finish his latest hit. This oddball series made its way to NBC’s famous Must See Thursday lineup nestled between Fraiser and ER, but didn’t make it past the first season. Overlooked slapstick gem of the nineties. Directed by Stanley Tucci. Starring Oliver Platt, Stanley Tucci, Alfred Molina, Lili Taylor, Tony Shalhoub, Steve Buscemi, Allison Janney, Richard Jenkins, Isabella Rossellini, Campbell Scott, Billy Connolly, Dana Ivey, Hope Davis & Woody Allen How is the world wrong about this film? From Bryan: Critics were so won over by Stanley Tucci’s previous effort Big Night (1996) and couldn’t wait to see what was next. Some weren’t ready for a Laurel and Hardy-esque homage to classic Hollywood comedies. Why isn’t this movie talked about as one of the great comedies of the late 20th Century? Tucci is an amazing, underrated filmmaker. Let’s champion him and this hilarious film. Today Dustin & Cameron are revisiting the 2001 horror film "Thir13en Ghosts", starring Tony Shaloub, Shannon Elizabeth, F. Murray Abraham, & featuring an unbelievable heater of a performance from Matthew Lillard. While the movie may not be very good, they're breaking down all the things that make it such a guilty pleasure for both of them. They also talk about how they think they would fare in a fight against any of the ghosts, go into a few of the ghosts' backstories, and after lamenting the lack of sequels/spin-offs, start pitching their own ideas for how to continue the franchise. This one is currently in the last chance section of HBO Max so check it out and get the week started with an absolutely insane B-movie. Growing up in Queens, NY, at the age of 13, David Krumholtz, stumbled into the world of acting when he followed friends to an open audition on a lark, landed the role, then found himself on a Broadway stage alongside Judd Hirsh and Tony Shaloub. That launched a decades-long career in acting and eventually writing in TV and film, with credits that include a five-year run on the TV show Numbers, The Good Wife, Law & Order, HBO’s The Deuce and movies like Addams Family Values, The Santa Clause series, Slums of Beverly Hills, and now in his newest role, he plays a police officer in the deeply-provocative movie, Crown Vic.In today’s conversation, we dive into his journey as an actor, but also quickly zoom the lens out to explore his love of music, culture, family, feelings about the acting life and the role of work in his bigger mix, what makes him come alive, the importance of humility and kindness, his experience with depression and cancer, and then we dive into the gritty and provocative story behind his new film, Crown Vic, and the tough questions it asks viewers to consider, while leaving no pat answers.Check out our offerings & partners: Stitch Fix Kids: Get started today at StitchFix.com/kids/goodlife to try Stitch Fix and get an extra 25% off when you keep everything in your box! Hop on your spaceship for this week's edition of Force Fed Sci-Fi and The Force Fed Sci-Fi Movie Podcast as we laugh out loud with the film Galaxy Quest as we cover the Galaxy Quest characters and aliens, mention some of our favorite Galaxy Quest quotes, discover just what exactly happened to a Galaxy Quest sequel and more. Strap in as we go on a Star Trek film spoof journey! Make sure to listen to our podcast episode and subscribe so you never miss an episode! Galaxy Quest Movie Cast Tim Allen as Jason Nesmeth The Home Improvement star was not the first choice as the actor who plays the actor who plays Commander Peter Quincy Taggart (I think that made sense?). In fact, some of the others who were offered / considered for the main role included Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin, and Kevin Klein. We really thought Tim Allen fit the role perfectly. He sort of has that cheesy humor that fit well with this character as well as just the general idea of making comedic spoof of Star Trek. Sigourney Weaver as Gwen DeMarco Sci-fi star Sigourney Weaver didn't take on the role of someone opposite of aliens or ghosts in this film, but instead did a great job delivering humor to audiences as Gwen DeMarco, an actress who played Tawny Madison, a character that just repeated and posed questions to the spaceship's computer for the rest of the crew. While it sounds like one of the lamest jokes a Star Trek spoof could come up with, she delivers a performance that will make you laugh out loud. Alan Rickman as Alexander Dane We definitely argued whether or not Alan Rickman sort of stole the show a bit from Tim Allen. With his character being fed-up and negatively sarcastic about himself being a former star on a space exploration show mixed in with some brilliant acting (I love his facial expressions in this film), the comedic lines from the character are hard not to crack up about. Honestly, Alan Rickman was a vital part of this cast and without him, the quality of this movie would have been downgraded. Sam Rockwell as Guy Fleegman While Chris and Sean did have a Force Fed Sci-Fi redshirt pick for this movie (listen to the podcast episode to find out who ... rather what it was), Rockwell's character literally played a redshirt on the television show within the movie. Oh those poor Star Trek redshirts. Luckily, Rockwell's character gets to tag along for the movie's adventure, and kind of represents the character theme of "being able to grow." While Rockwell isn't the one you concentrate on a ton in this film, it's nice to watch one of his earlier roles where he still delivers a solid and funny performance. Tony Shaloub as Fred Kwan The Monk star actually and originally tried to obtain the role of Rockwell's character, but the filmmakers thought he was better suited for the role of Fred. Like Rockwell's character, Shaloub as Fred isn't focused on too much in this movie. Although, there is the awkward, but hilarious romance between he and Missi Pyle's character Laliari. Galaxy Quest Aliens The Thermians Mathesar, the leader of the Thermians - portrayed by Enrico Colantoni Quellek, a Thermian who admires Alan Rickman's character - portrayed by Patrick Breen Laliari (mentioned above already), a Thermian who plays the love interest of Tony Shaloub's character - portrayed by Missi Pyle Teb, the second-in-command for the Thermians - played by Jed Rees The Reptilian Humanoids General Roth'h'ar Sarris, the main protagonist in this film who seeks the destruction of the Thermians - played by Robin Sachs Lathe, Sarris' second-in-command - played by Wayne Péré Force Fed Sci-Fi's Favorite Galaxy Quest Quotes The humor holds up after twenty years of being released, especially for those of us who are Star Trek fans. A lot of one-liners that we love from this film: Before going out on stage at a convention, Rickman's character humorously and depressingly states, "I played Richard III ...

What happens when you pull together Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell and more? You get the 1999 Star Trek satire: Galaxy Quest, and the cast does not disappoint. Your hosts Dan and Tyler learned many lessons while watching this movie and share with you their top lessons that you should take to the grave. Well, maybe. But if there was one lesson you should take away from this is: never give up, never surrender. Your hosts also dive into how such a cast would come together to do such a movie, and why it was named the 7th best film in the Star Trek Universe (at a certain point in time). This is one great movie, so we suggest you watch it. Next up? A Ben Kingsley and Michael Madsen classic: Species. Now Playing Movie Reviews podcast hosted by Sarah Mason and Jake Essoe from The HMC. Review by Sarah Mason. Legendary filmmaker Walter Hill first heard the story for his latest revenge thriller THE ASSIGNMENT in 1978. But it would take almost 40 years and many projects in between (THE WARRIORS, ALIENS, Tales from the Crypt, Deadwood) to bring Denis Hamill's original story draft, Tomboy, to the big screen. Hit man Frank Kitchens (Michelle Rodriguez), double crossed by his client mob boss Honest John (Anthony LaPaglia) undergoes gender reassignment surgery against his will at the hands of a sadistic surgeon (Sigourney Weaver) who seeks revenge for the death of her brother. Aided by his nurse girlfriend, Kitchens sets out for revenge. THE ASSIGNMENT is not a great film but its consistent action and strong performances, keep you intrigued throughout it's relatively short run time (1h 35m). Editor Phil Norden uses comic book style stills to move the story along from act to act. It's a kitchy but effective technique giving the film a cult classic charm. Rodriguez performance is strong particularly in the second act when she loses the obvious and distracting male disguise. Weaver's scenes with Tony Shaloub, who plays a psychiatrist tasked with the doctor's diagnosis, are some of the best moments of the film and certainly the highlight of the script. One could argue that THE ASSIGNMENT is both timely, and suffering from horrific timing. Though I don't think Hill intended the film to serve as social statement or lacking empathy he perhaps, should have considered the consequences. What Hill does do, he does well, good ol' fashion action, THE GETAWAY, 48 HOURS, to name a few. And that is what this film is, a B action film with a A cast. HUMAN CENTIPEDE meets SIN CITY if you will. Loyal fans of action films and Hill will surely dig it. If you can overlook the bad PR, which you should, it's worth a watch. 6/10.
