Known for her bold creative voice and deep cultural fluency, Bre unpacks her unconventional journey from law school dropout to creative leader, touching on everything from the importance of representation in branding to how comedy fuels her storytelling. With firsthand experience in both multicultural and general market advertising, Bre offers a refreshing and unfiltered perspective on navigating the “brovertising” world, the evolution of DEI, and why authenticity, nuance, and research are non-negotiable in successful campaigns today.Whether you're a small business owner, marketer, or creative looking to make work that actually resonates, this conversation is packed with insight—and laughs.Key Topics Discussed:1. From Law School to Ad WorldBre's Cuban upbringing and traditional career expectationsDiscovering creative advertising through Miami Ad SchoolCracking into a legacy-driven, network-dependent industry2. The Cultural Layer of BrandingWhy DEI and multicultural advertising are not interchangeableHow diverse internal teams lead to stronger external messagingDissecting tone-deaf campaigns (hello, Kendall Jenner/Pepsi)3. DEI in Advertising: Beyond BuzzwordsWhy diversity must go beyond optics to real decision-making powerThe role of DEI post-2020 and how it's being politicized todayRepresentation vs. inclusion: who's in the room vs. who's heard4. Human-Centered Creativity in an AI WorldWhy AI is a tool, not a replacement for nuanced storytellingThe risk of creative atrophy when we rely too heavily on techTeaching students to balance innovation with critical thinking5. Brand Authenticity & Speaking to Real AudiencesWhy research matters more than assumptionsWhy brands need to know their primary, secondary, and tertiary audiencesCase studies of brands that got it right (Dove, Nike) and wrong (Bud Light, Heineken)6. Send us a textThis is the first episode in a 3-part mini series about exploring creative education, both as a noun and a verb; new ways of thinking about assessments, grading and ungrading with 3 brilliant educators who work and teach in the spaces of communication, design, creativity, art and art therapy. First up is Dom Prevost, Group Creative Director at Resonance and also teaches at IDEA School of Design (Capilano University) and Miami Ad School. With a multi-disciplinary approach and years of international experience, Dom has created award-winning, fully-integrated campaigns for some of the world's most iconic brands including Nike, adidas, Benetton, lululemon, Foot Locker, Mercedes, Ford, Johnnie Walker, Red Bull, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Ministry of Sound, Playstation and Ubisoft. In this episode, you'll hear about a course Dom teaches that, at its core, is helping students succeed through embracing failure, by removing control and providing space for things to go wrong. Dom explains what he hopes to instil in his students about failure, iteration and pushing past the first ideas, as well as how he uses grades not as a means of control and power, but as a means of relinquishing control and power, handing it back to students to show up with good, bad and ugly ideas. Finally, Dom gives us a sneak peek at his upcoming new workshop at DesignThinkers Vancouver, May 13-14, 2025.I'm all about interesting projects with interesting people! Gane o no gane. 3.

Myan has been very aware of energy since she was a child. During a ten month trip to India in her early 20's, she got sick and needed to find alternative ways to heal herself. Through psychic meditation and healing, she was able to develop her abilities to be sensitive to the world around her in a way that was empowering. This journey lead her to heal her body and become a professional healer, clairvoyant, animal communicator, and psychic teacher. She has been doing this work for twenty years! Born and raised in Chicago, IL, she went to college at the University of Wisconsin where she studied painting. After traveling around the world, she became a teacher, working with adult refugees as an ESL instructor, teaching preschool, and working at a spiritual center teaching psychic development classes. She continued to do her healing work while she studied art direction at the Miami Ad School, and now works full time as a psychic reader, healer, and teacher. Through using her psychic abilities with people, she discovered that working with animals was equally as helpful and an important part of the healing ecosystem. She works with people and their pets to help pet owners gain clarity and be in better communication with their animal companions. Animals are a big part of our every day life and need help taking care of their energy too! Myan teaches classes on all things psychic, including how to take care of your energy, how to heal yourself and others, how to see/read energy, how to use your psychic abilities in your every day life as a compass and guide, and how to communicate and heal your pet and other animals. We do not always experience what is fully happening with just our basic five senses. There are aspects of life that exist in between the lines.Since we are not only working from a physical perspective, we need to be responsible for taking care of our energy and our pets energy in combination with tending to the body and mind. www.goddessofwildthings.com

Baiba's career is varied to say the least. Starting with a bachelor of visual arts at university where she was dissuaded from pursuing a career in this field, to later attempts at breaking the small glass ceiling of male advertising strategists in her native Latvia. After some account management experience at both Ogilvy and Grey group she landed a strategist role at an agency in the Czech Republic, later working at Kantar Millward Brown. During COVID she started a community dedicated to serving fellow strategists around the world - pushing the profession forward. Now she works mostly freelance in between guest lectures at Miami Ad School and a mix of other pursuits from her new base in Berlin. You couldn't get someone closer to the front line in the advertising agency world who also has a healthy cross functional chunk of experience. Sometimes referred to as The Mark Pollard of Europe. She specializes in brand strategy and creative strategy. In this episode you're going to get a good grounding in the history of strategists, formerly known as account planners. You'll learn where the role came from. Why it is needed. What the role looks like today (for better or for worse). Why you need access to one when working with an agency and all of the good, the bad and the ugly within the modern world of advertising. But what also leaks out are some very interesting comments about the modern state of the client agency relationship. The problems on both sides and how we can solve them together aligned in the pursuit of better work. You'll learn how to brief better. How to tell an experienced planner from a junior one (or influencer cult follower). You'll learn which strategy frameworks you can use and which ones are overrated. You'll also learn why insights are not essential for good strategy - and much more. As usual, many common myths will be debunked and if you don't learn something new, you haven't been listening. So what are you waiting for?
I've worked in marketing for years, and I rarely say this: this young man is one of the most talented marketers I've come across in a long time. Shlomo Genchin possesses similar intuitive brilliance that drew me to Seth Godin many years ago. Listen to my intimate conversation and the evolution of a talented marketer. Get to know him; you won't regret it. Copywriters are entrepreneurs, too. On this episode of The Entrepreneur Next Door podcast, you'll meet an amazingly talented young copywriter with an equally impressive entrepreneurial journey. Join me for a refreshing and intimate conversation with a talented young man from Israel. We speak about his entrepreneurial journey to becoming a sought-after copywriter and what he attributes to the key to his success (spoiler alert, it's not about tech).Shlomo's career aspiration as a creative young man growing up in Israel was to become a military officer or an actor. He becomes an 'accidental copywriter' after taking a get-rich-quick sketchy course. Contrary to what one may expect, Shlomo can express his creative talent and freedom during his military service (in a K-9 unit as a dog handler). His journey takes him to Berlin, where he studies copywriting at the Miami Ad School (this is not a typo; it was in Germany). After creating an award-winning campaign, he gets an amazing offer to join one of the leading international ad agencies. Watch the rest of his journey and find out:➡️ Does working for an ad agency prepare you for a successful career as a Copywriter? ➡️ Did Shlomo accept a once-in-a-lifetime job offer?➡️ "Creativity is about freedom." How does Shlomo put his belief into practice? ➡️ Did Shlomo exercise this option, "If it didn't work, I could always crash on my parents' couch." ➡️ Why is Shlomo Genchin excited about AI, and what does he think is the biggest mistake people make while using it? ➡️ What key ingredient do you need to generate brilliant copy? Shar Biggers is the creative director and founder of Provoke Design, a branding studio. A native of Atlanta, by way of St. Louis, she holds an MBA in business management and is a graduate of Miami Ad School's Portfolio Center of Design. In her extensive experience, she has worked with Fortune 500 companies, led design for Amazon rebrands like Amazon Fashion and Amazon Diversity, and helped more than 10 million Americans say "I'm with her" for Hillary Clinton. Here's what we covered on the episode: Underrepresented Populations + Provoke Design How we originally met Shar on Episode 170 of The design Business Show and why I invited her back on to discuss how a lack of investment in banding can create limitations for underrepresented populations Shar's created her agency, Provoke Design, to provide branding for all different types of businesses – specifically, businesses led by color, businesses led by women, and businesses led by people who may come from backgrounds who may not have the funds necessary to succeed in their business Just because you come from one of these three groups doesn't mean you don't have a good business concept, idea, product or service, or leadership Shar expresses how much of a struggle it can be to see these businesses come in but not have the resources or funding available to get them to where they need to go, and not have the awareness needed to have a strong brand and marketing presence that they need to succeed Too often throughout Shar's experiences, she would see those businesses not be able to approach the agencies she knew of or were so well known, which created a massive gap that Shar saw needed to be filled because she could see how it affected the economy and diversity in business How there are so many examples of where representation for these 3 groups does not exist Many people who do not fall into these groups usually get money from friends and family for their first investments when starting a business, which is the first stumbling block when it comes to underrepresented people because they don't usually have people they can turn to When you come from an underrepresented group and are starting a business, Shar says you are probably the breadwinner - the reason they are trying to launch a business is to try to help the family and leave a legacy Shar says she is thankful to have gone to school for an MBA because being educated in psychology and business first and design second has helped shape the type of way she wants to do business Once Shar sees those businesses that have a need, she tends to consult them on business overall - product design, product name, digital presence and asks questions like, what's customer service like, do people like your company, is your product/service actually strong and solving a problem, or do you need to pivot Sometimes when people come to Provoke, they don't have an idea at all, or they have a failing idea and need help figuring out an idea that will do better – they are coming at different phases, Shar says, some need a rebrand, and some need help with their overall brand to make it stronger Using Design to Help Solve World Problems Shar explains there are some things in place that make it really hard for these underrepresented groups to qualify or get approved; that's why she created a business where some of their biggest blocks can be solved through the branding and design work they do Why Shar believes design thinking is the way of the future and the way businesses should be led - she believes if the world's biggest problems were in the hands of designers, they would be solved Shar's advice for designers is to think about the things you are passionate about and would like to see solved and think about how you can help solve that thing in a beautiful way Another great suggestion Shar has for designers is to think about including a certain number of pro bono projects or discounted projects per year for underrepresented groups so they can have more accessibility Sometimes designers don't think their work is that serious when it comes to branding, but Shar explains that it can help determine how great of a legacy these underrepresented groups can leave their families, which impacts the nation and is why were need to be more thoughtful and empathetic towards finding a solution to this problem If you don't see anyone solving the issue that you feel needs to be solved, you should think about how you can solve it Even if you aren't an expert in something, that doesn't mean you can't make a difference in that area with the skillset and knowledge you do have How the majority of people don't realize how social, economic, or racial problems aren't just limited to health care or housing, but how it stretches into business Shar wants to make sure people are aware, so they can begin to think of solutions and little things they can do in their personal lives to help solve this problem in branding As designers and problem solvers, we can help figure out ways through what we're passionate about to help solve these world problems We hope this conversation ignites inspiration - make sure you check out Shar's agency website and connect with her on Instagram Links mentioned Provoke Design Website Episode 170 of The Design Business Show Connect with Shar on Instagram Like what you heard? Shar Biggers is the creative director and founder of Provoke Design, a branding studio. A native of Atlanta, by way of St. Louis, she holds an MBA in business management and is a graduate of Miami Ad School's Portfolio Center of Design. In her extensive experience, she has worked with Fortune 500 companies, led design for Amazon rebrands like Amazon Fashion and Amazon Diversity, and helped more than 10 million Americans say "I'm with her" for Hillary Clinton. Here's what we covered on the episode: Shar's Background + Design School How Shar initially reached out to me on Instagram and how we've stayed in contact ever since As a child, Shar was creative but ended up going to school for neuroscience, where she received her bachelor's degree in psychology - she started her PhD program but quickly realized it wasn't what she wanted to be doing even though the work itself was valuable. Shar explains that she changed paths to pursue an MBA instead and tried to get into marketing and advertising agencies for about a year with no success and says she felt very discouraged Finally, an agency that Shar had sent her resume to reached out and asked her to do an internship with them - she accepted and worked in SEO and SEM but says that she was fascinated with the graphic design department there and realized that's what she wanted to be doing Shar Shares that she went to Portfolio Center of Design and did a 2-year program and after moved to New York, where she began working in an ideation firm We talk about how in high school, we didn't know there was this creative world that you could be part of where you didn't have to be considered a starving artist and how our country has been more accepting of creativity Shar recommends a TED Talk called, Do schools kill creativity? given by Ken Robinson Getting Into the Design Industry How Shar found such strong differences between working in design houses vs. working in advertising and says she learned a lot from working in marketing and advertising but felt more comfortable working in design Shar explains that it took her a couple of years to figure out her design identity and says she tried working in print, advertising, branding, packaging, etc. How Shar was able to get into agencies to work in things like media buying, SEO, or social media but couldn't get into graphic design right away because she didn't have a portfolio even though the agencies agreed she had raw talent Shar shares why she thinks it's hard to break into graphic design work at agencies as a self-taught designer because they typically think that if this is your job, you should go to school to study your craft, and they want to rest assured that you have the training and knowledge needed to design because they take it seriously Why we need to bridge the gap between people who took the traditional design route and the people who are self-taught designers or who just graduated from school When thinking about building a portfolio, Shar says it's important to figure out what you love doing first because you want your portfolio to be relevant to the work you want to be doing How you should focus on specializing to a certain extent instead of being a jack of all trades because once you master a certain area, if you want to pivot, people will believe in it, and you because you showed them you mastered something already Shar thinks people should perfect the craft they want to be good at and think about what kind of designer they want to be because everything takes a different route and gives the example of her best friend who also went to school at the same time as her, but took a different route into advertising The story of how Shar worked very hard at school, which even meant sleeping there most nights because she lived an hour away - she shares that she was eating, sleeping, and breathing design to prove that her work was just as good as anyone else Shar's advice to those listening is to think about what you want, how badly you want it, and where you want to go - and if people are not seeing it, you have to take a step back and say, is everyone picking on me or am I missing something? The story of how Shar wasn't able to pay for her last year of school and had to move back home with her mom had no money to her name but launched an online store on Etsy store selling pop culture-focused phone cases that went viral and helped pay for her last year of school Creating Your Portfolio + Provoke Design If you want to build your portfolio, study your craft, and take on free projects if you need to - Shar shares that she took on some very low paying projects so she could master her craft Shar says as a new designer; you shouldn't be so eager for money because you still need to understand the industry and learn but says, if you master your craft, you can charge whatever you want When you're trying to learn, Shar recommends finding a small, local agency that puts out better work than your own and saying, hey, I want to learn, and if you have the capacity to teach me, great Another piece of advice Shar gives is, be willing to intern for free so you can learn the skills you need, especially if you are self-taught; that way, they can be your teacher, and they can help you master your craft Shar created Provoke Design because she saw an unmet need of the market - after working at a lot of different places, she noticed one consistent thing was that she was usually the only person of color and one of the only women, and also noticed the clients she worked with or the products they would put out lacked diversity When Shar worked for Hillary Clinton, Hillary was an advocate for change, and if you didn't see the change you wanted, she encouraged to do it yourself, so that's what Shar did - Shar didn't start Provoke Design because she wanted a design firm, she did it to start changing the design industry Shar says she works with all types of businesses but works to keep her business accessible to brands that can't afford to go to the best branding houses For the first couple of years, Shar was the only full-time person, and she worked with other partners from writers and strategists to art directors and producers based on project budgets Shar is currently working on the logistics of building an in-house team with the primary focus of staying accessible Shar wants to remind you that regardless of your situation or circumstances, you can make a path for yourself - do what it takes to get there and don't be afraid to do the things that may be seen as unconventional Connect with Shar through the Provoke website or follow them on Instagram Links mentioned: Provoke Design Website TED Talk - Do schools kill creativity? Do you notice the minutiae details in everyday life? For example, have you ever recognized the way that other people hold their cell phones? If you do, your mind works similar to that of Jeffrey Nicholson, the CEO, and Co-founder of Tracer. This level of attention to detail has helped him throughout his career, particularly when it comes to picking up some of the latest trends, which he told me about in this episode of Marketing Trends.“I start with natural curiosity. I still, to this day, will do my own research and Google brands, and go through their experiences, and understand what other people go through. When you look at the consumer research on people, they use eight apps or less; they [have] very specific behaviors. I used to look at people's phones and [could] tell very quickly just on their layout, how they operate with phone position and thumb position. You have to start with curiosity, no matter who you are, from analysts all the way to CEO. You've got to know what's going on.”Under the tutelage of media giant, Gary Vaynerchuk at VaynerMedia, Jeff and his co-founder Leighton Welch, built Tracer with the plan to launch separately once the development was complete. Leighton developed the structure of the software while Jeff was operating the customer-facing side, servicing Vayner clients and using the software. VaynerMedia is still a client of Tracer and more companies every day are realizing the value it offers in solving complex data equations. Excited for you to glean some real nuggets of wisdom from this marketing leader. Up next on Marketing Trends. Main Takeaways:Developing Good Talent on your Team is Exponentially Beneficial: As your team grows, the more people you have that are closely aligned with your business mission, vision, and execution expectations, the better that will help everyone stay on the same page. Scaling a team up in the right way might take a little extra time, but the investment upfront will pay dividends later. Curiosity Leads to Excellence in Business: As a CEO being curious is critical to keeping a good view of the big-picture. Developing a natural curiosity around your work can lead to you discovering some basic but important ways you can improve your business operations. As you go through the customer-facing experience of other brands and products, notice the sticking points, the areas you could improve upon, and learn some potentially hard lessons the easy way. Designing Teams around Individuals with Various Skill Sets: Every member of your team brings a vast array of talents and skills to share with the company. Think about who you already have on your team and what other roles you could use support for when hiring to build out the most complementary team. Key Quotes:“I start with natural curiosity. To this day, [I] will do my own research and Google brands, and go through their experiences, and understand what other people go through. You've got to know what's going on.”“I'm a big believer in talent and making sure that talent breeds talent and I think about it as a pyramid. Typically you're starting with your co-founders. The reality is that every level of that pyramid is imperative to the success of your business. I'm a big basketball guy. You need a power forward, you need a shooting guard, you need everybody to have different skill sets. That's going to be complementary to make you win. So you're a good communicating and functioning team… I've spent probably more time than most of the people I know in regards to just recruiting and retention because I do believe that, you know, people are the difference between winning and losing.”“I underestimate how difficult it is to be responsible for other human beings. As an early manager, I got some good advice and bad advice and you're just learning on the fly. I think now I feel a lot more comfort in being a leader in dealing with things.”“I spend a lot of time on [my work] because I care and I want to win. And honestly, I want to make sure I don't let anybody else down on the team. It's an easy motivation to keep yourself motivated, to make sure that we make the right decisions and spend as much time as I can researching and recruiting and, and doing the things.”Bio:Jeff Nicholson is the CEO and Co-founder of Tracer. Nicholson has been innovating in the media and tech space for 15 plus years. Before joining Tracer, he was the first Chief Media Officer at VaynerMedia, where he spent five years scaling the business globally. He has also served as the Head of Ads at SocialCode, which was the largest spending agency on Facebook in North America. Prior to that, he was VP of Ads at LeadKarma, which sold to BankRate for $30MM. Currently, he sits on the advisory boards of Roku, Pinterest, and NextDoor. On Episode 127 of Bouncing Back, I interviewed Aarti Thamma who was most recently an Art Directing intern at Saatchi and Saatchi. This is also my 85th episode in partnership with The Avail List.Aarti started her career by getting a bachelors degree in business and an MBA in marketing. After going door-to-door selling Mutual Funds she realized that her real passion was in creative, and figuring out the why behind people purchasing certain products. After that realization she setup a small creative business with her friends where she helped small businesses in her community grow. She continued working on her craft at the Miami Ad School, pays a lot of attention to detail, makes sure to do research on the brands she's working on, and loves to collaborate. She's a people person who loves thinking beyond just the brief deliverables, and credits the fact that she has lived in the Middle East, India and the US for having a larger understanding of the world.Reach out to Aarti if you're looking for young talent who is eager to make a difference at your agency. aartithamma.comvimeo.com/596098744#BouncingBack #Covid19 #JobSearch #Advertising

Yessenia (Yessy) Downs has always been a writer. But as an English major at the University of Florida, she was encouraged to pursue one of two options: to make money as a lawyer or to not make money in the world of film. She chose law, and poured everything into the path. It was only after being accepted to law school and meeting practicing lawyers that Yessy realized the future ahead was not for her. With the help of a friend and an introduction to the Miami Ad School, Yessy discovered a third option: copywriting. She dove in again, this time with full confidence in the creative experiences waiting for her on the other side. Yessy now works as full-time copywriter, with a breadth of experience from some of world's most respected brands and agencies. She has been awarded for her work in the industry and was named one of ADCOLOR's 2020 Futures. What I think makes Yessy a guest to remember is *both* her success in the industry and how she's using her craft for good. As a bilingual daughter of immigrants, Yessy recognized the lack of true inclusion in the advertising industry from day one and decided to take matters into her own hands. In addition to her full time career, Yessy is making waves in advertising and brand strategy as the founder of Oxford Comma Collective, a full-service writing studio that partners writers of color with entrepreneurs of color to help them find and establish their brand voice. Yessy and her team are on a mission to employ and empower members of BIPIC, Queer, female and disabled communities with the power of words. In today's episode, Chloe speaks with Yessy to unpack her pursuit of copywriting, creativity and true inclusion in the advertising industry. Yessy shares what Miami Ad School was really like, her experience and advice for aspiring writers, and the hard truth behind what sets good creatives apart from great ones. The two also discuss tokenism versus inclusivity in advertising and the vision driving the Oxford Comma Collective forward. If you're a writer, curious about the path of a professional in advertising, or passionate about amplifying every voice, this episode is for you. ———— Recommended in today's episode: Miami Ad School: https://miamiadschool.com/ Ogilvy: https://www.ogilvy.com/ Leo Burnett: https://leoburnett.com/ David the Agency: http://www.davidtheagency.com/ Know My Name: A Memoir, by Chanel Miller: https://www.amazon.com/Know-My-Name-Chanel-Miller/dp/073522370X ———— More about Oxford Comma Collective: https://www.oxfordcomma.co/ Oxford Comma on IG: https://www.instagram.com/oxfordcomma.co/ More about Yessy: http://www.yessydowns.com/ Yessy on IG: https://www.instagram.com/yessydeee/ More about The Passages Project: https://www.thepassagesproject.com/about The Passages Project on IG: https://www.instagram.com/thepassagesproject/ Chloe on IG: https://www.instagram.com/chloebelangia/
