There is elegance, there is smarts, and there is athleticism...rarely do you find them in one person. Meet Florence Cathiard, half of the husband-wife team that owns and transformed both Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte in Bordeaux and Cahtiard Vineyards in Napa. The dynamic duo as established these two prime vineyards and places of history into thought provoking destinations. It takes about 20 seconds to realize you are conversing with an accomplished business woman and wine romanticist. Join me as I dive into the heart of Napa Valley with Florence Cathiard, co-founder of Cathiard Vineyards, in a captivating episode of "Wine Talks with Paul Kay!" Discover the essence of what makes a great wine: the perfect varietal, a dedicated team, and harmonious climatology gifted by Mother Nature. Florence shares her journey from professional skiing to becoming a wine industry icon, driven by a passion for purity and elegance in every bottle. Learn about her experiences in Bordeaux and Napa, and why organic and sustainable practices are at the core of their vineyard's success. Listen to how Florence and her husband, Daniel, have transformed their love for nature and wine into a thriving, globally recognized legacy. Listen in, feel the charm, and let your palate be the judge! Fun Facts: Florence Cathiard was a member of the French national ski team and met her husband, Daniel Cathiard, who was also a skier and the only student in the team, through skiing. The Cathiards initially dabbled in supermarkets and sports goods shops, including opening four large shops in California named "Gauche Port." Florence was involved with Rossignol Skis in Japan and ended up starting her own advertising agency, eventually joining McCann Erickson as a vice president. The Cathiards had a romantic notion to set up a small business without unions, leading them to buy and revive the derelict Smith Haut Lafitte vineyard in Bordeaux. Summary: In this engaging episode of Wine Talks, I sit down with the passionate Florence Cathiard, co-founder, and owner of Cathiard Vineyards. Florence shares captivating stories from her multifaceted journey, beginning with her skiing career in the French national team, where she met her husband, Daniel Cathiard. The couple eventually transitioned from sports to business, managing a chain of supermarkets and establishing "Gauche Port" sports shops, even expanding briefly into California. Their path took a remarkable turn when they purchased the neglected Smith Haut Lafitte vineyard in Bordeaux, driven by a passion for quality wine, a connection to nature, and a desire for a small-scale business. Florence highlights the essential elements for great winemaking - a dedicated team, the right varietals, and favorable climatology. The Cathiards' entrepreneurial spirit also led them to venture into Napa Valley, embracing organic practices and establishing their presence with a focus on elegant and harmonious wines. Florence's dedication to creating an unforgettable wine experience shines through as she discusses the family's ongoing impact on the wine industry and their shared love for winemaking as an expression of geography and history.

He sat down to talk to us before Thanksgiving about how media planning works, how brands and advertisers think about audiences, and how the stories we tell about youth cultures have been recycled and subtly upgraded since the invention of the teenager, to fulfill the hopes and dreams of not only the corporations who want them to buy stuff, but just as importantly, the people who make advertising and want to believe it is capable of doing something good in the world. This is our last episode of the year - we wish you a very happy and relaxing holiday season, and send our best wishes for the New Year.

Today I'm Having a GAS™ with Rob Henderson, talking all things Don Draper, Mad Men and specifically what his character teaches us about masculinity throughout the twentieth century right up to 2023! Rob Henderson recently earned his PhD at Cambridge University specialising in human behaviour. If you're interested to hear more from Rob, follow him at https://robkhenderson.substack.com/ Having a GAS™ is the podcast that talks to the great and the good of the creative industries, and in particular finds out what makes great music for film, for TV, for advertising; for dancing to, for cooking to, f*cking to, and more...   GAS™ Music is a music production agency in Manchester, UK. We compose and produce original music, create awe inspiring sound design and have a fully integrated audio post-production studio. We also have a great record collection, and welcome any additions, recommendations or criticisms. http://www.gasismusic.co.uk   According to Wikipedia...   Donald Francis Draper, born Richard “Dick” Whitman, is a fictional character and the protagonist of the AMC television series Mad Men (2007–2015), portrayed by Jon Hamm. Up to the Season 3 finale, Draper was creative director of fictional Manhattan advertising firm Sterling Cooper. He then became a founding partner at a new firm, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, after he and his superiors left their previous agency in advance of an unwanted acquisition. The agency later merged with a rival firm, Cutler Gleason & Chaough, to become Sterling Cooper & Partners while pursuing a contract from Chevrolet. The character of Don Draper is partially inspired by Draper Daniels, a creative director at Leo Burnett advertising agency in Chicago in the 1950s, who worked on the Marlboro Man campaign; and by Bill Backer, an advertising executive at McCann Erickson who created the "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke" ad in 1971. Mad Men is an American period drama television series created by Matthew Weiner and produced by Lionsgate Television. It ran on the cable network AMC from July 19, 2007, to May 17, 2015, lasting for seven seasons and 92 episodes. Its fictional time frame runs from March 1960 to November 1970. Mad Men begins at the fictional Sterling Cooper advertising agency on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, New York City, and continues at the new firm of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (later named Sterling Cooper & Partners) near the Time-Life Building at 1271 Sixth Avenue. According to the pilot episode, the phrase "Mad men" was a slang term coined in the 1950s by advertisers working on Madison Avenue to refer to themselves, "Mad" being short for "Madison" (in reality, the only documented use of the phrase from that time may have been in the late-1950s writings of James Kelly, an advertising executive and writer). The series's main character is the charismatic advertising executive Don Draper (played by Jon Hamm), who is initially the talented creative director at Sterling Cooper. He is erratic and mysterious but is widely regarded throughout the advertising world as a genius; some of the most famous advertisement campaigns in history are shown to be his creations. Later, Don becomes a founding partner at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce but begins a struggle as his highly calculated identity falls into a period of decline. The plot of the show tracks the people in his personal and professional lives. As the series progresses, it depicts the changing moods and social mores of the United States throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. Mad Men received widespread critical acclaim for its writing, acting, directing, visual style and historical authenticity; it won many awards, including 16 Emmys and five Golden Globes. The show was also the first basic cable series to receive the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, winning the award each year of its first four seasons (2008–2011). It is widely regarded as one of the greatest television series of all time and as part of the early 21st century Golden Age of Television   © GAS™ Music 2022

And he said what? I said yeah, yeah, you know, so I didn't really like it. And it was any time I think he ever swore me. He said, I don't care that you don't like it. That's not the point."16:48 "That conversation has stuck in my head and was very formative because from that moment I was like, I'm going to show you I don't need to go to university. I am going to be way more successful than you ever dreamt of and it really drove me."24:41 "How I became successful is I just always said yes. I was open to anything. I didn't plan. I had friends that would have their 5 year plan for their career. I was like, why would you do that? You're just going to take the opportunities that come along."27:08 "I was never afraid to take a role that seemed outside of my abilities. From that regional, every one of the jobs I ever had, I didn't really have the qualifications to do it."48:00 "It's hard to stay still. You're either moving forward or you're going backwards so I just thought, no, I'm going to keep going, keep going as far as I can go. Until I stop enjoying what I'm doing, I'll keep trying to drive up."More about DanielDaniel began his professional career in a TV station selling TV airtime. While it was second to the smallest station at the time, it did introduce him to ad agencies which then led to a job offer from an agency as a media buyer. After a couple of years, he had the opportunity to join the international media department of McCann Erickson which he considers to be the turning point in his career. This would eventually be called the European media department and, filling a leadership gap, decided to move along with his office to Brussels to work directly under the CEO.He then had the opportunity to move to Bahrain as the Regional Media Director. Fearlessly, he said yes and jumped headfirst into the role. This trend would continue and it would take him to Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Johannesburg, and New York. Daniel would find himself as President at McCann Indonesia at the age of 29 and his successes would continue on from here. But after a storied 19 year career with McCann, Daniel decided to start his own focus with a nonprofit called Peace One Day as CEO.An ex-colleague invited Daniel to join Kimberly-Clark as a consultant to reposition their corporate brand and this gave birth to his consultancy firm, Left Field Consultancy. But after missing the business culture, he had the opportunity to join Interbrand, which he promptly took up. Interbrand would take in Daniel full-time as Executive Director, Global Brand Engineer working with Nissan. In a couple of years, he would gravitate back to management where he is now CEO of Interbrand NA. Find out more about Daniel and connect with him in the following links:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/danielbinnsLearn more about Jake Dunlap and Skaled by visiting the links below:Jake Dunlap:Personal Site - http://jakedunlap.com/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jakedunlap/Twitter - https://twitter.com/JakeTDunlapInstagram - http://instagram.com/jake_dunlap_Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/JakeTDunlap/Skaled:Website - https://skaled.com/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/skaledYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsw_03rSlbGQkeLGMGiDf4Q
