I became a faithful listener about a year ago for several reasons. 1) The Music: I always get to listen to great music. The variety of tunes featured is top notch. Into some of the bands more than others, but the exposure to music I haven't heard before is always appreciated. 2) The Guests: Chris and Aaron have what it takes to make an interview worth listening to. The stars and guest that are on are always entertaining. The insight and humor is always appreciated. I learn something I didn't know almost every time. 3) The Variety: I love themed shows, Toddzilla, KISSmas in July, The featured shows (RUSH, AC/DC) and especially the Radio Sucks episodes. A huge shout out to the Y&T episode you had. They have always been a top 3 band for me and it was great for them to get the exposure they deserve. Thats about it. I will continue to make this podcast a weekly must listen. Great Job guys!! Y&T Discussion - Ep263

Decibel Geek Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 21, 2016 131:46

The guys are joined this week by DBG VIP The Rockin' Donkey for a Y&T Discussion. Formed in 1973 in Oakland, California, Y&T were originally known as Yesterday and Today. After two good, but poorly received, albums for London Records the band, featuring singer/guitarist Dave Meneketti, guitarist Joey Alves, bassist Phil Kennemore, and drummer Leonard Haze, were signed to A&M Records. 1981's Earthshaker would kick off the newly re-branded Y&T and launch a trilogy of albums that formed the backbone of their concert set list and solidified their fan base. Rounding out that trilogy were 1982's Black Tiger and 1983's Mean Streak. While these albums had moderate success, the higher positions of the Billboard charts continued to elude Y&T. That theme would continue with 1984's In Rock We Trust but the tide would change with the release of the song Summertime Girls. Originally appearing as the lone studio track on the live Open Fire album, the song would get added to 1985's Down for the Count and give Y&T some serious commercial attention. That attention would be fleeting however as Summertime Girls remains their biggest hit single and Y&T was subsequently dropped from A&M Records. Y&T   1987 saw the band re-emerge on the rock-heavy Geffen label. Original drummer Leonard Haze was out and new drummer Jimmy Degrasso was in. Contagious had every ingredient from the keyboard to the hooks to the hairspray that should've assured bigger success. Unfortunately, the guiding hand of John Kalodner couldn't pull Y&T to the success of which he had with Aerosmith. After releasing 1990's Ten album (featuring new guitarist Stef Burns replacing Alves), Y&T took a long break as the new wave of Grunge music started to take over. 1995 saw the band return with Musically Incorrect; an album that had solid material yet certainly was not flavor-of-the-week fare. That trend would continue with 1997's aptly titled Endangered Species. Y&T would go on an extended hiatus as guitarist/singer Dave Meneketti focused on a solo career. The band would come back to rave reviews in 2010 with Facemelter (featuring new drummer Mike Vanderhule); an album that showed a serious return to form for the band. Tragically, this would be the final album for bassist Phil Kennemore who succumbed to cancer during the touring cycle for the album. Y&T would soldier on with replacement bassist Brad Lang before being replaced in 2016 by Aaron Leigh. The band had two more tragic losses in 2016 as original drummer Leonard Haze and longtime sound man Tom Size both passed away. In this in-depth discussion your hosts and guest discuss the history of the band and go through each album in the studio discography. Favorite and least favorite tracks are discussed as well as album covers and lyrics. Underlining much of the conversation are theories of why this amazing band never achieved bigger success. It's a long, fun discussion about a band that continues to wow crowds 40 years after the release of their first album. We hope you enjoy Y&T Discussion - Ep263 and SHARE with a friend! Buy Music! "Rare Hair" was killer. This week was just phenomenal as is every week. Even when they banter incessantly about KISS they are still entertaining and informative. Never seems to disappoint. Makes me look forward to every upcoming week to get the new episodes!! They constantly remind us that there are more to the bands we love beside "The Hits"! The Decimal Geeks turn math into a radio play with numbers. You are so absorbed by the comedy and soundscape that you subliminally learn all kinds of neat math tricks. Example: To quickly multiply by 5, dive the number in two and then multiply it by 10. The hosts Chris SynchMath and Aaron CosineMajor really make math fun… and ALMOST cool. All my friends at the University of Wisconsin—Madison listen but show is great for students at any level. And give the show a try, even if you don’t think you like math. The guys are joined this week by filmmaker/guitarist Steve McClure to discuss the great new rock documentary Hair I Go Again; a film that follows the long journey of two middle aged guys attempting to put their 80's rock band back together, the twists and turns, highs and lows, and challenges they face. Along the way, the guys get an education in the form of advice from numerous 80's rock luminaries including The Killer Dwarfs, Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale), Warrant, Jason McMaster, Tesla, Jack Russell, Steve Blaze (Lillian Axe), and Ron Keel. They also get advice from media personalities such as Eddie Trunk and Luc Carl.             Hair I Go Again Hair I Go Again was a long time coming as the film was crowd funded a few years ago while the guys were on their journey to reunite the band. As you'll see in the film, getting 5 guys back together again is not an easy task. In this talk, Steve McClure shares his take on the making of the movie including quitting his day job to fully invest in this project, the tension between he and his partner on this journey Kyle Kruger, and what it was like to throw all caution to the wind in an effort to find out what might have been. I'm glad I did. I searched hard rock in iTunes and a breakdown of Warrant's Dog Eat Dog with producer Michael Wagener popped up. Being a huge fan of that perfect record I downloaded it to give it a shot. Wagener offered great insight and nuggets I had never known. The two hosts asked GREAT questions and they played most of an album I haven't heard in years. I went back and started picking off things that interested me. What I found was nothing less than brilliant. I had about 2800 CDs at the time. Having been re/introduced to things I'd never heard before or in years I went straight to the web and started buying music as if I had all the money in the world. I don't have all the money in the world. But I don't care as I have about a hundred more CDs as a direct result of this show. Who needs food? Music feeds my soul. These guys conduct great interviews and have been a great resource for hearing old forgotten classics. Just as important is they've introduced me to a lot of great new music. It's a great blend of memory lane and discovery street. Keep it up guys. You have a new subscriber and I will click through before purchasing anything on Amazon from now on. In what has become a yearly tradition in which regular weekly podcast hosts, Chris and Aaron take their Thanksgiving off and the Canadians host the episode, the duo from The Great White North present an episode jam-packed with music from Canadian artists. Hoser Heavy Metal Hour Vol4 Due to schedule alignment issues, mainly caused by a trip to Tokyo, the boys were unable to record with their planned guest host in time. As a solution, they reached out to some of their favorite Canadian bands and artists, some popular and some more underground, and had them choose the music for this hour-plus episode. This week we fulfill an interview wish that goes back to the beginning of the show; fitting for our 4 year anniversary. This week Aaron and Chris celebrate the 4 year anniversary of Decibel Geek with an in-depth conversation with Mark Slaughter. Currently promoting his new solo album produced by Michael Wagener, 'Reflections in a Rearview Mirror' Mark was kind enough to sit down in-person with Aaron, Chris, and Decibel Geek writer Billy Hardaway for a long-form talk on the new album, the history of Slaughter, and A LOT of discussion about his days working with Vinnie Vincent in the Invasion. Aaron and Chris put out a call a few weeks ago for listener questions for Mark and the listeners did not disappoint. Many of the questions made it into the interview including one that Mark deemed his favorite. The solicitor of that question wins an autographed print of Mark from the photoshoot for his new album. The photo was taken by friend of the show and past guest Chad Lee of Chad Lee Photography. Be sure to listen to the end because Mark gives you another opportunity to win a signed photo if you can be the first to submit an answer to feedback@decibelgeek.com. Starting with 1993's 'Sound of White Noise' and going all the way through 2013's 'Anthems' EP, there was a lot of change in the Anthrax camp. What started out as a new life with former Armored Saint front man John Bush would lead to an interesting game of musical chairs over the years and would ultimately result in the return of Joey Belladonna.   In part 2 of this Anthrax career discussion, your hosts share their thoughts on the musical and personnel choices made by the band in the past 10 years. Was 'Sound of White Noise' a stab at being a grunge band? Did 'Stomp 442' have no chance at equaling the success of 'White Noise'? Was Bush's more serious side pushing out the youthful and humorous spirit of the Belladonna-era?   Other topics touched upon in this coversation are the behind the scenes power moves that have taken place, trouble with record companies, surviving an American tragedy, and unsung heroes in the Anthrax alumni.   It's a fun, thoughtful discussion and not everyone agrees with the choices made. Some of the most memorable KISS discussions we've had are the ones we've conducted with crew members. This week's guest should prove to continue that tradition.   Former KISS crew member Ken Barr joins Chris and Aaron this week for an in-depth discussion of a very transitional phase in the Hottest Band in the Land's career. Ken was a drum tech/guitar tech/carpenter for KISS from 1992 - 1996. His tenure included the Revenge tour, Alive III, the 1995 convention tour, MTV Unplugged, Reunion tour rehearsals, and the 1996 KROQ Weenie Roast. Lots of stories about the personalities behind the members of KISS, stories from the road, and Ken's thoughts on what the band is doing today.   Our talk with Ken today is just the tip of the iceberg of experiences that he's had throughout his career in the music industry. Chuck Garric is no stranger to large crowds and big tours. His bass duties for such rock and metal legends as Dio, LA Guns, and Alice Cooper have given him quite a resume. But one thing that stays the same after playing in front of millions of people over the years; Chuck Garric is still the same music fan he was as a kid.   When not on tour, Garric resides in Nashville, TN as part of the long line of rockers that have made their way to the Southeastern hotbed of music. On a random weeknight you can see Chuck, along with members/ex-members of Motley Crue, Thin Lizzy, Accept and many others jamming out to some of the songs that got them hooked on rock and roll in their early years.   Aaron and Chris were fortunate enough to grab a coffee with Chuck just before he left for Europe to hit some big festivals with Alice Cooper as well as gearing up to co-headline with Motley Crue on their final tour.   In this discussion, Chuck goes back to his Lake Tahoe, CA roots to describe his musical upbringing, the awesomeness of Ted Nugent, his thoughts on American vs. European audiences, and the likelihood of Alice breaking the drought of DaDa songs in the setlist among other things.   For all things Beasto Blanco (including how to purchase the album) go to: www.livefastdieloud.com   Follow Chuck on Twitter @BeastoBlanco   Buy Music!   Alice Cooper Beasto Blanco Ted Nugent   Contact Us!   Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunes Join the FacebookFan Page Follow on Twitter Follow onInstagram E-mail Us Call us on theHotline! What you’ll hear in the first half of this episode is Chris (and writer Billy Hardaway) hanging out on a patio with the Dwarfs and Luc Carl while chatting about an assortment of stuff including their mutual love for Alice Cooper, touring with Saxon in the 80’s, and what happened to that can of Cuddly Cola from the ‘We Stand Alone’ video.   The second half of the show features a one on one talk that Chris has with Darrell about his time with the band Laidlaw, his other band Automan, getting back together with the Dwarfs, sharing a studio with KISS in 1992 and what Dwarfs fans can expect on their current tour in support of their Start @ One album.   Geeks of the Week:   Twitter: DJ Novak, Jaime Tigertailz, Jay Arnold, Stuart Brown   Facebook:   Joe Lascon, Todd Cunningham, Lee Maslin (Audio Junkies), Robert De Pasqua, Andy Lafon, Billy Hardaway, Derik Novak, Dave Shirt, Brent Walter, Scott Yeager, JTB’s Groovy Record Room, Shane Hebert, Rodney Dickson   Become a Geek of the Week by sharing this link on Facebook or retweeting it on Twitter! If you're anywhere near America during this time of year, the term "March Madness" seems to permeate the air. The NCAA basketball tournament becomes the sports centerpiece for the entire month of March and sports and non-sports fans escape into office pools of their own brackets in an attempt to prove their sports knowledge. The musical equivalent of this takes place on (crappy) radio stations across the land; with stations assigning bands in the bracket spots and letting listeners vote on who should be crowned the champ.    This week Aaron and Chris take a rock band bracket list and go head-to-head in a discussion/argument over what happens when you pit these bands against each other. Some of these matchups and picks will anger you, make you laugh, question our sanity. Either way, it's a fun, laid-back talk between Aaron and Chris and more indisputable evidence that radio absolutely, positively sucks.   Geeks of the Week: Facebook: Matt Ashcraft, Todd Cunningham, Chris Karam, Rick Shaw, Derik Novak, Patrick Johnson, Brian N Shawna Evans, Rodney Dickson, Shane Hebert, Jason Thomas Broadrick   Twitter: Nick Rose (belated), Cassius Morris, Jason Wood, Nonsensicast Radio, Mojo Dave, The Pod Mafia,   BUY MUSIC!
