We return this week to discuss all the latest happenings in the rock world with New Noize 8! The past couple weeks have been a roller coaster of emotions for many rock fans. We start things off on a somber note with a discussion on the recent passing of drum god Neil Peart. We share our thoughts on Rush, Neil's legacy, and some of our favorite songs from the legendary Canadian trio. David Lee Roth recently made news with a sad note about Eddie Van Halen as well as a controversial opening to his Las Vegas residency. We give our feelings on both of these stories and you might not like what we have to say. You've been warned. Ozzy recently released another song from his upcoming album Ordinary Man. This time he's joined by Elton John for the title track. What did we think of this tune? Listen and find out. Additionally, we cover stories involving Dee Snider, Glen Danzig, KK Downing, and Robin McAuley. It's all the news that's fit to spit with New Noize 8! I became a faithful listener about a year ago for several reasons. 1) The Music: I always get to listen to great music. The variety of tunes featured is top notch. Into some of the bands more than others, but the exposure to music I haven't heard before is always appreciated. 2) The Guests: Chris and Aaron have what it takes to make an interview worth listening to. The stars and guest that are on are always entertaining. The insight and humor is always appreciated. I learn something I didn't know almost every time. 3) The Variety: I love themed shows, Toddzilla, KISSmas in July, The featured shows (RUSH, AC/DC) and especially the Radio Sucks episodes. A huge shout out to the Y&T episode you had. They have always been a top 3 band for me and it was great for them to get the exposure they deserve. Thats about it. The music world lost a ton of talent; causing many to label it the "worst year ever." While those losses certainly stung the guys as well, they prove in this episode that there was a ton of great music released in 2016 including albums from legends such as Metallica, Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, and Testament. Best of 2016 Other great releases came from bands such as Volbeat, Tango Down, Crobot, The Dead Daisies, and many, many more. They have finally hit their stride! For those of you who don't know, these dudes have been at this podcasting thing for quite some time. They may have changed their names since their original podcasts, but I was able to figure out their ruse. ("Czynszak" - really,... that's the best you could come up with?) You see back in the day, Chirs Sinsack and Aaron Pinto hosted a great YES podcast called "Close to the Edge of Our Lonely Hearts". Unfortunately, it only lasted a couple of episodes, because the shows lasted for 12 hours due to the self-indulgent nature of prog rock. ITunes cyber police pulled it for breaking bandwidth rules and the guys were without a show. A few months later, I stumbled on to a Juice Newton fanatics podcast called "Juice Box" and recognized some familiar voices. However, that show didn't last long either since Aaron kept falling asleep during the taping and because of the fact that there were only 3 listeners (Chris apparently had multiple accounts). Then I heard this fantastic podcast called Decibel Geek that covered all things Hard Rock & Metal (and covered it really well!). Although the names had been changed to protect the innocent, it was definitely Chris & Aaron. These guys do a hell of a job bringing fresh perspectives to the genre and a lot of it's sub-genres in the metal world. On a weekly basis you can expect great interviews, amazing knowledge of the bands & eras and lots of laughs with guys that seem like your friends back home. 5 starz all the way! "Rare Hair" was killer. This week was just phenomenal as is every week. Even when they banter incessantly about KISS they are still entertaining and informative. Never seems to disappoint. Makes me look forward to every upcoming week to get the new episodes!! They constantly remind us that there are more to the bands we love beside "The Hits"! The Decimal Geeks turn math into a radio play with numbers. You are so absorbed by the comedy and soundscape that you subliminally learn all kinds of neat math tricks. Example: To quickly multiply by 5, dive the number in two and then multiply it by 10. The hosts Chris SynchMath and Aaron CosineMajor really make math fun… and ALMOST cool. All my friends at the University of Wisconsin—Madison listen but show is great for students at any level. And give the show a try, even if you don’t think you like math. Ace Stories with Crazy Joe Renda - Ep249

Decibel Geek Podcast

Producer and longtime friend of Ace Frehley, Crazy Joe Renda stops by to share Ace Stories about everyone's favorite spaceman. Joe first came to prominence in KISS fan circles with the novelty song, 'Eugene' released under the moniker of Crazy Joe & The Variable Speed Band. The song would go down in KISSTORY as Ace Frehley's first musical project outside of the band as he's a co-writer and co-producer of the song. Joe also founded and ran North Lake Sound studio in White Plains, NY along with fellow songwriter Chip Taylor (known for ' Wild Thing', 'Rock Soldiers' and 'Angel of the Morning'). Joe is also the producer for prank phone call legends The Jerky Boys. Ace Stories with Crazy Joe Renda In this long-form conversation, Joe shares some incredible stories of hanging out with Ace Frehley and being around the business of KISS. Stories of the interpersonal relationships between Ace and the other members of the band are shared including the dynamic between the "2 camps" of Simmons and Stanley vs Criss and Frehley. Also included are Joe's recollections of Ace's decision to quit KISS and how Gene Simmons pleaded with Joe to attempt to keep Ace on as a member of the band. Other stories involving a testy meeting between Peter Criss and Eric Carr, loads of stories of Ace truly being a rock  n' roll wild man and so much more including the story of how 'Eugene' was created and how it connects to KISS (not in the way you would expect). It's an hour-plus of jaw dropping stories about Jendell's favorite son. Accept drummer Christopher Williams stops by this week to discuss his lifelong love affair with the Hottest Band in the Land. In this long-form talk, Williams talks about his discovery of KISS via the MTV Unplugged appearance in 1995. He also talks about the MTV Video Music Awards performance that the reunited band gave under the Brooklyn Bridge as the clincher in his fandom. Christopher is no ordinary KISS fan. In this hour-plus discussion he describes the scenario which led him seek and acquire one of Peter Criss' reunion era drum sets. It's a great story that has many twists and turns. He also relives his first KISS concert and how he had interactions with each band member throughout the set. Christopher Williams Aside from playing with metal legends ACCEPT, Christopher works steadily in numerous other musical endeavors including performances with a local group of musicians known as Blonder Than Hell. This group features bassist ET Brown, Williams, and Thee Rock N' Roll Residency founders (and former guests on this show) Jeremy Asbrock and Phillip Shouse. This KISS tribute is absolutely incredible and is not afraid to deliver the rarities that the official product shies away from. This year, they are performing a KISSMAS in July gig in Nashville, TN at Exit/In. This special show will feature the band in full makeup and costume performing, in their entirety, the Hotter Than Hell and Destroyer albums. It's sure to be a great night so join Chris and Aaron if you can. More info can be found HERE. For the fourth consecutive year, the Canadian Decibel Geek team of Wallygator Norton and Rich "The Meister" Dillon, the Hoser Heavy Metal Twins, return to the Decibel Geek airwaves. In what has become a yearly tradition in which regular weekly podcast hosts, Chris and Aaron take their Thanksgiving off and the Canadians host the episode, the duo from The Great White North present an episode jam-packed with music from Canadian artists. Hoser Heavy Metal Hour Vol4 Due to schedule alignment issues, mainly caused by a trip to Tokyo, the boys were unable to record with their planned guest host in time. As a solution, they reached out to some of their favorite Canadian bands and artists, some popular and some more underground, and had them choose the music for this hour-plus episode. This week we fulfill an interview wish that goes back to the beginning of the show; fitting for our 4 year anniversary. This week Aaron and Chris celebrate the 4 year anniversary of Decibel Geek with an in-depth conversation with Mark Slaughter. Currently promoting his new solo album produced by Michael Wagener, 'Reflections in a Rearview Mirror' Mark was kind enough to sit down in-person with Aaron, Chris, and Decibel Geek writer Billy Hardaway for a long-form talk on the new album, the history of Slaughter, and A LOT of discussion about his days working with Vinnie Vincent in the Invasion. Aaron and Chris put out a call a few weeks ago for listener questions for Mark and the listeners did not disappoint. Many of the questions made it into the interview including one that Mark deemed his favorite. The solicitor of that question wins an autographed print of Mark from the photoshoot for his new album. The photo was taken by friend of the show and past guest Chad Lee of Chad Lee Photography. Be sure to listen to the end because Mark gives you another opportunity to win a signed photo if you can be the first to submit an answer to feedback@decibelgeek.com. Albums Unleashed Carnival of Souls with Toby Wright Pt2 - Ep180

Decibel Geek Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 15, 2015 71:51

We're back this week to talk about the second half of a very polarizing album.   Chris and Aaron return this week with the second part of their discussion with producer Toby Wright for Albums Unleashed - Carnival of Souls. Covering the second half of this controversial KISS album, Toby shares his memories of the tracking and mixing of the songs including the Gene Simmons-sung 'In My Head,' which was written by Gene along with Scott Van Zen and Jaime St. James of Black n' Blue. In this section of the discussion, Wright remembers pushing Simmons and bandmate Paul Stanley to record harmony vocals in the vein of Alice in Chains members Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley; and how the attempt would fall short by comparison.   Another track discussed in this hour-plus special is 'I Confess.' Wright reflects on a tense recording session involving a string section that was brought in to add a dark feel to the songs and how he had to get the classically-trained musicians to break convention to pull off the sound he was after.   Other tracks covered in this Albums Unleashed special include the psychadelic-tinged 'In the Mirror,' the Black Sabbath-inspired track 'It Never Goes Away,' and one of the most unusual tracks in the KISS catalog; the Middle-Eastern sounding 'Seduction of the Innocent,'    Most notably, however, is the discussion of the debut (and lone) KISS vocal of guitarist Bruce Kulick. This track had quite a history as Wright explains the numerous permutations it would take on during the tracking process (including a lead vocal take from Simmons). This track's autobiographical nature would play out as life would later imitate art in the form of the KISS reunion and guitarist Kulick and drummer Eric Singer would wind up unemployed.   Toby Wright goes into great detail in this discussion of how Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley called a meeting during the overdub sessions for Carnival of Souls to break the news that they had been solicited with a multi-million dollar offer to put on the greasepaint and reunite with original KISS drummer and guitarist Peter Criss and Ace Frehley; respectively.   The effect of the reunion announcement would have a catastrophic effect on the album; as it was immediately shelved by Mercury Records, leaked on the internet, and then, with very little fanfare, released by the record label in October of 1997.    The Decibel Geek Podcast wants to thank Toby Wright for giving so much time in discussing a controversion, yet bittersweet, album in his massively successful discography. We hope you enjoy this 2 part Albums Unleashed special on KISS' Carnival of Souls.   More Toby Wright!   Official Website   More COS Info!   Bruce Kulick COS Retrospective     Geeks of the Week: Devin Fox, Rob Harris, David Alpizar, Craig Cohen, Warren Money, Marc Alden Taylor, Shane Hebert, Mark Lo, James Brendon Dunn, Robin Bennett ($20.00 donation), Allen Tate, Brad Kalmanson, Mike Blount, Derik Novak, Colin Francis, Justin Hayes, Joe Lascon, Corey Nowlin, PJ Brown, Brent Walter, Ian Wadley (Rock & Metal Combat Podcast), Dan Chaput, Jeff Hogland, Ryan Sessions, Wally Norton, Eddie Golatka, Brandt Cattell, Mike Stewart, Brian Knapp, RAW Magazine, Hot Metal Magazine, Loudmouth, Faces Rocks Magazine, Steve Cunningham, hoops, Jack Broad, Shawn Franklin, Stephen Atchison, Rockorama, Joel Hebensperger, Nick Rose, MusicMagsAndWax, Joel DeLorge, Toby Wright   Contact Us!   Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunes Join the Facebook Fan Page Follow on Twitter Follow on Instagram E-mail Us Call us on the Hotline! Ride for Dime - Ep166

This week marks an anniversary that is anything but something to celebrate. That said, we pay tribute to a true metal icon and, more importantly, an amazing human being.   Aaron and Chris return this week to pay tribute to the memory of Dimebag Darrell. The iconic guitarist was murdered onstage 10 years ago this week. Since then, a series of bike rides for charity have sprung up all over the United States. We had rock photographer and friend of Darrell's, Chad Lee, on the show as he was gearing up for the Nashville chapter event in September. Chris attended the ride and documented the process while later being joined by Aaron for the knockout metal concert.    In this Dimebag tribute special, you'll hear first-hand how the day unfolded for Nashville's Ride for Dime event; from the bar-b-que before the ride and party that includes chats with Chad Lee, Steve Bumpus of Bumpus Harley Davidson (hosts for the event), Nancy Sayle (Rock for MS), and guitarist Nick Bowcott (Grim Reaper). The episode moves into the evening and features backstage talks with Sirius/XM deejay Jose Mangin as well as a lengthy talk with former Black Label Society guitarist Nick Catanese. It's a fly-on-the-wall perspective of a day that saw thousands of people coming together to help out charities and remember a metal legend and amazing person. One of our favorite past guests and friend of the show returns this week for a more personal reason.   Todd Austin (aka Toddzilla) returns to the Decibel Geek Podcast this week and boy is he packing some great stories. If you don't remember, Toddzilla was Aaron and Chris' guest for Episode 113 - Roth-Era Van Halen Discussion. In that discussion, the guys picked favorite tunes from Eddie and co. but Toddzilla's stories were so memorable and entertaining, they elicited a lot of listeners asking for him to return.   In this conversation, Todd shares some of stories of his long career in and around the music industry. Entertaining tales involving Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Ace Frehley, Vinnie Vincent, and Gene Simmons highlight just a portion of the talk.   Other subjects touched upon include the growth of the Nashville rock music scene, a strange encounter with Johnny Cash, and details of a documentary in-production covering Toddzilla's life.   Geeks of the Week: Todd Cunningham, Matt Ashcraft, Howard Tate, Warren Money, Chris Karam, Kal Hinz, Derik Novak, Justin Ace Sixx, Dan Miles, Mike Blount, Shane Hebert, Matt Syverson, Scott Olinger, Brent Walter, Brian Knapp, Chad Pollock, MusicMagsAndWax, Hoops, Adam Cox, Raw Magazine, Hot Metal Magazine, Loudmouth Column, Faces Rocks Magazine, Viking Girl, Pep Pep, Jack Broad, Joel DeLorge, Snark at the Moon Billy Hardaway, Nick Rose, Robert, Collins, Singer International.
